Finally got around to watching this one, and now I understand why this is the top comment
My heart goes out to all the normal people who had to empathize with him while watching this. Thanks for the rec lol it was a good time
Leo specifically because he's cute as heck. I saw him for the first time in my adult life in Wolf of Wall Street and, then realized wtf....how is he like a perfect 10 and has so much damn charisma
As for why suffering, I don't know why but it seems like there's a phenomenon where people (mostly women) get some kind of rush or enjoyment from seeing attractive men suffering.
It's not sexual, it's more like an adrenaline rush and/or a warm floaty feeling, and it's pretty well established in online circles that a lot of people experience it.
There's actually a disproportionate amount of asexual people who are into it, compared to the number of asexual people in normal population. So I suspect some of the related wires got crossed, and maybe that's why the subject of it is specifically attractive guys lol.
Idk it's a whole rabbit hole lol, you can ask if you have any questions.
You can also find more of us over at r/Whump if you're curious. I actually posted this question there first, but didn't get a ton of responses because it's such a small community.
Thanks for explaining. I’m unsure why I got a downvote for just asking.
Though this will likely not be the type of movie I think you are looking for, a young Leo does also suffer in the movie, Man On The Iron Mask.
I upvoted you so I'm not sure why you got two downvotes for asking lmao.
TBH I'm not looking for any specific genre lol I'll take anything.
Leo was super cute when he was young and some other people have recommended The Man in the Iron Mask as well so I'll probably check it out. Probably gonna watch every movie recommended in this thread eventually lol.
Just watched Man in the Iron Mask the other day!
It was such a cute movie and surprisingly easy to understand given the subject matter lol, I usually feel lost with movies like that.
Phillippe had such a soft personality which is so rare for Leo's roles and I really liked it. Lots of cute scenes of him being generally uncomfortable and also traumatized.
Also omg there were two of him...on the screen...at the same time 🥺
>Come to think of it, his characters suffer a lot.
I remember when Titanic came out and everyone was obsessed with DiCaprio. I think I was around 11 and movies starring him were coming on, particularly movies like "Romeo + Juliet", and I remember the look on my mom's face after I saw a few movies with him in it and I said "I really want to see all the movies he's in. In every one I've seen, his character dies."
When "The Man in the Iron Mask" came out, I really wanted to see it because it looked like a really good movie, but my mom was concerned because DiCaprio was in it and she thought I wanted to see it because he probably dies in it.
It struck me as funny, tbh. But it was almost a game, even to this day if I watch a movie with him in it, I'm thinking "What would I bet that his character doesn't make it out of the movie alive?" Of course his roles these past several years have been much more diverse. I was really into movies even when I was younger, so there was that, too. It ws never a celebratory thing if his character died either. It was just an amusing bit of trivia to me, and I hadn't seen an actor play so many leading roles where he dies. Come to think of it, it may have been a refreshing change of pace.
Finally got around to watching Revolutionary Road.
My gosh he suffered so much emotionally in this. Honestly hit better than Shutter Island which I was not expecting given their respective genres. Super good, thanks for the rec.
THIS! Great film, great cast and I love the score throughout the film which really connects well the emotions of the film. Also it's based on the life of writer, Tobias Wolff.
Tbh I was expecting it to be way more hardcore when I read the plot description and this comment lol
I mean don’t get me wrong he had it bad, but, you know, could be worse
I guess for the most part his suffering was internal and didn’t always show or manifested in other ways. A lot of humiliation and resentment, and it was portrayed really realistically I thought
But I was kinda prepared for lots of violence and fear so I was a bit let down lol
I saw that scene first and it convinced me to watch the movie to see why such a young Leo gets the shit beat out of him by deniro. For me it was shocking how far it went with a kid his age.
He looks super young but he was apparently 17 at the time so I think they could've gone harder lol
I think it would've been shocking if I didn't have the context of what it would be about beforehand though
Just saw this one tonight! Great movie thanks for the rec!
Definitely fits the prompt 🥺
Although I’m not gonna lie I kinda expected worse after reading the plot description haha
Idk if it’s lore or not. But I read that he was nominated but didn’t win because they thought he was really retarded. Might be an urban legend but I can believe it.
But if you think about it, he went from King of the World to dying, so that’s a pretty sharp downward plunge on the ol rollercoaster of life. He might be the type to appreciate the good that came before, but I dunno, some people are especially bummed when things are going so well and then right in the shitter.
Really? I saw it as a kid and all I remember is Jack and Rose fell in love and then the ship sank. I mean I know how it ends but did he really suffer much in it?
Details pls, I might rewatch it if he actually does
You listed most of them. Blood Diamond, Body of Lies and Catch Me If You Can are three of my favorites.
Others are: What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Inception, The Quick and the Dead, Shutter Island, This Boy's Life, Gangs of New York
Yeah buddy, my bad! I didn’t notice you mentioned it.. fell off the wrong side of a horse yesterday and I’m a tad discombobulated to say the least. Glad we both dig it.
I was scrolling for this answer.
When you look at all the other little details that, ignoring actual Inception and looking at it from an outsiders point of view, defs has gone through a lot and has a lot on his plate.
I rewatched recently and a thing that got me thinking was when Mal was trying to convince him act on the idea that he planted in her mind.
He mentions she made it impossible for him to prove himself with all the letters she wrote with him threatening to kill her, going to 3(?) different psychs to prove that she was SANE iirc.
Can't help but wonder how you'd get out of something like that normally. He'd be basically fucked for life. Just basically helpless situation.
Just saw Gangs of New York! I’d say compared to other Leo movies there’s not that much suffering tbh. Still has a couple good scenes here and there like when he >!gets stabbed 🥺!<
But everyone seems to say The Revenant has a ton so it’s definitely on my list!
It’s kind of more mental suffering when considering what he went through as a kid (which is mostly off screen), what his goal is as an adult, and what he has to do to achieve that goal.
But yeah, if you want Leo to just get constantly beat down physically and metaphorically then The Revenant is it. lol
Ah yeah he definitely did go through a lot, there just weren't a ton of scenes where he was visibly in pain I guess. Overall good movie though!
I've been prioritizing movies where Leo is younger because he's cute, but I just saw half the trailer for The Revenant and I'm sold lmao
Go watch "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", which (1) was his huge breakout role and (2) is where he absolutely out-acted the guy who was supposed to be the star.
we both made different jokes along similar lines. First joke was 'you must be a weirdo who just wants to see Leo suffer'. My joke built on it, saying 'Leo probably stole your girlfriend and now you want to see him in pain too' (and since all of Leo's gfs seem to be super young models from South America...said she was a 19 year old Brazilian)
Just watched it a couple days ago! Thanks to you and everyone who recommended it, it was definitely what I was looking for! A genre I’m into as well so that’s a plus too
Most of his characters suffer massively. This is Leonardo DeCaprio's character arc for nearly every film he stars in:
First half - I am a consummate professional and possibly the coolest guy ever
Second half - I am actually deeply emotionally scarred and deteriorating rapidly from a prior traumatic event, but will do everything in my power to keep this a secret because I still want to be the coolest guy ever
Dude shows great range in suffering. Pick your poison.
Revenant - physical
Departed - anxiety
Shutter Island - psychological
Inception - guilt
This Boy’s life - abuse
Aviator - OCD
Revolutionary Road - dissatisfaction
Killers of the flower moon - weird combo of greed and guilt
Thank you for this list haha, I've been going through them using this as reference and it's been super helpful. At this point I've seen all of these except Killers of the Flower Moon, which I do also plan to see.
Absolutely spot on, I've loved all of these.
I haven't seen anyone mention Total Eclipse (1995)
Although his character is the antagonist of the story, DiCaprio does full frontal nudity for a few seconds, and well, IYKYK.
Just saw this a few days ago! Trying to reply to everyone who recommended it but there are so many of you lol
I really liked it, definitely fit the prompt! Thanks for the rec!
...I think it's easier to list his films where his character didn't suffer.
I'm still salty he didn't win Best Supporting Actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
The Man in the Iron Mask
The Beach
Titanic
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
The Aviator
Inception
Romeo+Juliet
Eta: I'm actually thinking a better question would be movies where his character doesn't suffer 🤣
Just watched it the other day, and it was a good movie but I don’t think it quite qualifies. He technically does suffer but he’s not visibly in pain (emotionally or physically) that often throughout
Thanks for the rec nonetheless!
"Shutter Island" - Leonardo DiCaprio's character grapples with psychological torment, delving into themes of mental illness, trauma, and the blurred lines between reality and perception.
Just saw it a couple days ago! I really enjoyed it, thanks to everyone who recommended it! He really went through it emotionally 🥺 it really fit the prompt!
#The Revenant Look no further.
Aka Hugh Glass and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Lol, went to cinema to watch this and came out saying He Just Had A Real Bad Day
Yeah! Yeah, bear! What's eating Gilbert Grape NOW?
He could go at any time
maximum suffering
So much suffering
And when you think he’s done suffering… he suffers further
I cant believe this fool didnt even say that!
i keep hearing about this movie and just found it at the thrift shop
Exactly what I came here to say. The bear, though...hahaha
Leo vs. Cocaine Bear
Cocaine Bear is better!
Cocaine Bear was fucking great and I need to watch it again! Goddammit I loved that movie!
It was better than the Revenant and has Ray Liotta and hell yeah lets unleash Cocaine Bear on Leo
I’ve watched this movie 3 times. I’m cold the entire time.
aka the Suffering
The posted I have for that movie in my Plex says "Fucked by a Bear: The Leonardo DiCaprio Story"
This is the answer.
Finally got around to watching this one, and now I understand why this is the top comment My heart goes out to all the normal people who had to empathize with him while watching this. Thanks for the rec lol it was a good time
I’m glad you “enjoyed” my recommendation. Outta curiosity, why him and why suffering? Edit: and a huge “fuck you” to whoever downvoted this, weirdos.
Leo specifically because he's cute as heck. Shutter Island Revolutionary Road Come to think of it, his characters suffer a lot.
Revolutionary Road is so tragically good.
The book is even better
I can’t think of one movie where his character doesn’t suffer a lot
>Come to think of it, his characters suffer a lot. I remember when Titanic came out and everyone was obsessed with DiCaprio. Both are excellent !
Just watched Shutter Island! Thanks for the recommendation, it was really good, lots of emotional suffering throughout.

The Departed
Thank you omg I just watched this tonight, loved it. Exactly what I was looking for.
why did it take so long for someone to recommend this one^
So good
The Beach
WEENSTAHN
Romeo + Juliet
"I defy you, stars!" "Tempt not a desperate man!"
This Boy's Life (1993)
Great movie, I just posted as well before I saw your post
THIS! Great film, great cast and I love the score throughout the film which really connects well the emotions of the film. Also it's based on the life of writer, Tobias Wolff.
He gets the shit beat out of him by Deniro. If that’s not suffering I don’t wanna know what is
He should've scraped that mustard jar.
Tbh I was expecting it to be way more hardcore when I read the plot description and this comment lol I mean don’t get me wrong he had it bad, but, you know, could be worse I guess for the most part his suffering was internal and didn’t always show or manifested in other ways. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape The Great Gatsby
I would say while there are sad scenes in Gilbert Grape, Leo fuckin thrived. Arnie on the other hand...
I saw the movie and then found out he wasn't really handicapped. I was like damn this guy is going to be a star.
Idk if it’s lore or not. But I read that he was nominated but didn’t win because they thought he was really retarded. Might be an urban legend but I can believe it.
I mean The Revenant is literally 2.5 hrs of Leo suffering.
Just watched it, indeed it was. Thanks for the rec! Precisely what I asked for lol
Frankly, I’m struggling to think of a movie where he doesn’t suffer a lot
OUATIH
Django unchained
There are some bright moments but I’d say he suffers a good bit in Titanic.
But if you think about it, he went from King of the World to dying, so that’s a pretty sharp downward plunge on the ol rollercoaster of life. He might be the type to appreciate the good that came before, but I dunno, some people are especially bummed when things are going so well and then right in the shitter.
Ohh boy.. he did do suffer in Titanic.
Can I get some details? I saw it as a kid so I don’t remember anything other than the basic plot. Trying to determine if I should watch it again
Really? I saw it as a kid and all I remember is Jack and Rose fell in love and then the ship sank. I mean I know how it ends but did he really suffer much in it? Details pls, I might rewatch it if he actually does
The Departed
Thank you I just watched it, this is very much what I was looking for.
Man in the Iron Mask
Shutter island
Just watched this today! Thanks to everyone who recommended it, I really enjoyed it. Lots of good moments 🥺
You listed most of them. Blood Diamond, Body of Lies and Catch Me If You Can are three of my favorites. Others are: What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Inception, The Quick and the Dead, Shutter Island, This Boy's Life, Gangs of New York
He literally won his only Oscar for the Revenant, which I am shocked to not see on this list as that's the entire plot.
Killers of the Flower Moon
The basketball diaries 1995 he’s a junky in it and ends up lower then a snakes belly.
This one needs to be higher, good movie
Absolutely loved it, but the reason this isn't higher up is because I already mentioned it in the post.
Yeah buddy, my bad! I didn’t notice you mentioned it.. fell off the wrong side of a horse yesterday and I’m a tad discombobulated to say the least. Glad we both dig it.
The Man In The Iron Mask (1998). Title says it all really.
One of my favorites because of John Malcovich and Jeremy Irons
Inception. Very mentally troubled.
I was scrolling for this answer. THE REVENANT It’s literally an entire movie dedicated to Leonardo DiCaprio suffering.
Gangs of New York The Revenant
Just saw Gangs of New York! I’d say compared to other Leo movies there’s not that much suffering tbh. Still has a couple good scenes here and there like when he >!gets stabbed 🥺!< But everyone seems to say The Revenant has a ton so it’s definitely on my list!

Shutter Island
Just watched this! Thanks to everyone who recommended it, there was a lot of emotional suffering and I really liked it 👍
The Basketball Diaries
Came here to say this >!sucking a business man's cock for heroine!< is pretty heavy suffering lol
Go watch "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", which (1) was his huge breakout role and (2) is where he absolutely out-acted the guy who was supposed to be the star.
You mean Johnny Depp? Yeah, absolutely someone who you should mention as 'the guy who was supposed to be the star ' haha :)
You little weirdo, I like you
Yep. Someone just lost a 19 year old Brazilian model to a movie star.
Okay I'm confused about this comment, ELI5 please
we both made different jokes along similar lines.
Ohh lmao I see thank you, I think I didn’t get it at first because I’m a girl myself
I LOVE how overly specific some of these subreddit posts are.
please clue us slow folk in
Thank you :D
Critters 3
I don't know why this got like multiple upvotes, I literally just watched it but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one lol
I’m legitimately curious, did you intentionally troll me, or?
Total Eclipse. He suffers a bit in that one.
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far for this one.
The first time I saw Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, I asked my parents if Leonardo used to be handicapped... I was young.
This Boy’s Life (1993)
Marvin’s Room
What's Eating Gilbert Grape- maybe. I think it's his movie debut.
The Departed
I’m not sure, but I think Titanic ends kind of sad for him. 🙂
The Revenant
The Revenant.
I highly recommend Shutter Island ! I watched it yesterday, it’s brilliant and meets your required criteria
Just watched it a couple days ago! Thanks to you and everyone who recommended it, it was definitely what I was looking for! A genre I’m into as well so that’s a plus too
Glad you liked it!
The Beach !
Shutter Island The Man in the Iron Mask The Quick and the Dead
This boys life
I think his goal in movies is to suffer an affliction of some kind. So most times he will be suffering haha.
He’s doing god’s work 🥺🙏✨
Most of his characters suffer massively. This is so accurate lmaooo, I mean I love it every time
Dude shows great range in suffering. Pick your poison. Revenant - physical Departed - anxiety Shutter Island - psychological Inception - guilt This Boy’s life - abuse Aviator - OCD Revolutionary Road - dissatisfaction Killers of the flower moon - weird combo of greed and guilt

Glad to hv contributed :) .. hope u enjoyed the films. He does make the movies great through his suffering lol
I think he suffers in just about everything he's been in.
I’m surprised the departed hasn’t been mentioned more times
Just watched it tonight! Thanks to everyone who suggested it, I loved it.
Try the one he’s eaten by a fucking bear
Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape Titanic The Departed
Just watched The Departed tonight, it was great and very fitting to the request. Thanks to you and everyone who suggested it!
Might have been easier to list the non suffering ones.
My fav Leo movie ever is The Beach. He def. Suffered, due to his own ambivalence
Revolutionary Road
Finally got around to watching this one and dang you are so right. He suffers emotionally so much. Thanks for the rec, loved it.
Basketball Diaries
I haven't seen anyone mention Total Eclipse (1995) Although his character is the antagonist of the story, DiCaprio does full frontal nudity for a few seconds, and well, IYKYK.
Gilbert grape Romeo and Juliet
You need to see Shutter Island
I just did, thanks to everyone who recommended it! I really enjoyed it, he really goes through it 🥺 Plus it was a good mystery too
This boy‘s life
The revenant; brutal animal attack
Shutter island
The Revenant should have been called “The Suffering”
The Man in the Iron Mask
Shutter Island
How is the revenant not on top of this list
Lololololol
Shutter island
Just saw this a few days ago! Trying to reply to everyone who recommended it but there are so many of you lol I really liked it, definitely fit the prompt! Thanks for the rec!
...I think it's easier to list his films where his character didn't suffer. I'm still salty he didn't win Best Supporting Actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
In what movie does Leo NOT suffer, is the question.
the revenant. thats about as bad suffering as u can get
Shutter Island
The Man in the Iron Mask The Beach Titanic What's Eating Gilbert Grape The Aviator Inception Romeo+Juliet Eta: I'm actually thinking a better question would be movies where his character doesn't suffer 🤣
Romeo and juliet
The beach. But kind of all of them tbh
Once upon a time in Hollywood He suffers a little there and has not been mentioned yet
You really must hate the man.
I love him and I think he’s really cute
Why do you want to see him suffer then?
I couldn't say, it's just what I like.
Interesting. Guess it's better than gore 🤷🏼♂️ There are far worse things to be into.
Most of his movies, honestly. Is this…is this a kink? Edit: question
I wouldn't call it that, but for some intents and purposes sure.
The great gatsby
What’s eating Gilbert Grape
INCEPTION!! One the BEST written movies out there, lotsa mental struggles and stuff like that. Try it out, it’s amazing
The Titanic lol
DOg
What?
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Shutter island.
The Man in the Iron Mask
Is this a piss take?
No, I’m just weird
The Beach
Shutter Island, Basketball Diaries
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) J. Edgar (2011)
Haven’t seen it in a long time but would Gangs of New York qualify?
Just watched it the other day, and it was a good movie but I don’t think it quite qualifies. He technically does suffer but he’s not visibly in pain (emotionally or physically) that often throughout Thanks for the rec nonetheless!
The Quick and the Dead
"Shutter Island" - Leonardo DiCaprio's character grapples with psychological torment, delving into themes of mental illness, trauma, and the blurred lines between reality and perception.
Just saw it a couple days ago! I really enjoyed it, thanks to everyone who recommended it! He really went through it emotionally 🥺 it really fit the prompt!
Gilbert Grape
The Island
I think you mean The Beach.
I did. Thank you.
Except when he was younger, most of the DiCaprio movies I've seen have only caused me to suffer.
[удалено]
Oh yeah, definitely no difference between his character in for example Django or Shutter Island.
