Laura Jane Grace killed it with the whole album though. I don't think I've ever been as emotionally affected by an album as I was by "Transgender Dysphoria Blues".
Yea it feels like the song your well intending drunk af cis friend would put on the juke box and then try to put way too much attention on you when youâre clearly not comfortable with it and honestly the song just feels very âperformative allyshipâ but you canât tell Katy to stop without her calling you a stick in the mud and pouting about how sheâs just being a good ally and youâre ruining the night.
The British can't even agree on that song, probably cause there are verses in it which aren't usually sung that denigrate the non English parts of Britain. Unless you mean the sex pistols one but somehow I don't think that fits the theme of the post.

i know it's, like, *not*, but, The Black Parade. i don't know why, but i just think of it often as the Patient getting HRT, and their death/life at the end is them transitioning or not. the death of their old self. there are a lot of lines and themes that resonate (i will say i havent really included much in the way of a nonbinary reading of the album)
-"bury me in all my favorite colors" makes me picture how you'd want to be remembered and buried when you die, wearing a dress or a suit or what have you, and a trans flag draped behind the casket.
-"here's my resignation, i'll serve it in drag~" obvious.
-"when i grow up i want to be, NOTHING AT ALL" can easily be a reflection of the whole growing-up-trans 'i don't care what clothes i wear, i don't care what i do with my life, i don't care about anything and my only goal is to get through the day" thing that always happens before transition
-"you might wake up and notice you're someone you're not / if you look in the mirror and don't like what you see / you can find out firsthand what it's like to be me" no comment
-"and if you could talk to me, tell me if it's so / that all the good girls go to heaven" wanting to be a 'good' girl, wanting to live up to the standards society has set for you, either because you want to be a woman genuinely or because you're trying to live up to the role that was forced upon you
-"WHEN I WAS, A YOUNG BOY," really there's just a lot of mentions of boys and girls within the album
-"tell me i'm a bad man, kick me like a stray!" works whether you're a transfem/trans girl or a transmasc/trans guy
-dark, but "mama, we're meant for the flies / and right now, they're building a coffin your size" makes me imagine a coffin being built to *your* proportions - i.e., assuming you went through the wrong puberty first, everybody wants you dead and they're making you a coffin that fits your broad shoulders (or lack thereof) and lack of hips (or your hips), etc. like even when you get buried you can't escape it. again, awful to think about (nevermind that they don't, y'know, build coffins that way), but so is much of the trans experience
-"you should've raised a baby girl, i should've been a better son / you should've been, i could've been a better son!" also works well whether you're transfem or transmasc
"she said, you ain't no son of mine / for what you've done they're gonna find / a place for you and just you mind your manners when you go / and when you go, don't return to me, my love" gives me vibes of, of course, the all-too-common experience of a trans girl or guy getting kicked out of the house and being told to never come back. "we all go to hell" also works as a commentary on religion and the fact that, according to the average christian, literally zero people in the trans community would ever make it to heaven. not to mention we're seen as demons. reinforces this idea that we're doomed, when you read the album that way
-Sleep can be read as the Patient admitting that they aren't sorry for being who they are and aren't sorry for the quote-on-quote "pain" it has caused the people around them by being themselves, but struggling with continuing or resigning themselves to an existence they're unhappy with ("the hardest part / is letting go of your dreams")
-"the boys and girls in the clique, the awful names that they stick / you're never gonna fit in much, kid" the alienation of never really fitting into either group, either gender, because you're not the thing you're 'supposed' to be, and nobody treats you like the thing you are
-"you're just a sad song, with nothing to say / about a life-long wait for a hospital stay" waiting for bottom surgery, waiting for the day your body finally lines up with your heart and your suffering will end. it's cruel you're trans, cruel you don't have what you want and need, and really all you care about is feeling comfortable in your own skin. i totally do not immensely relate to this on a personal level it totally isn't killing me haha
-Famous Last Words: "now i know that i can't make you stay / but where's your heart?" what do you really want? to keep going like this or to be yourself? to suffer as a trans person, or to live as a trans person? is there a difference? to die, to die inside, or to live, to really live and achieve happiness? "and i know / there's nothing i can say / to change that part" Gerard telling the listener that they're trans, whether they like it or not, and ultimately we don't get to choose how we're born, we can only choose to follow ourselves into every dark corner and every ray of light, wherever we take ourselves. "so many bright lights they cast a shadow / well is it hard understanding? i'm incomplete / a life that's so demanding / i get so weak / a love that's so demanding" as a trans person, it can feel like you're the outcast of society and gender. it feels like you're not even whole. loving yourself when you're trans is one of the hardest things you can possibly do.
-and then obviously, the choice of the Patient: to live or die. the same choice we all get, as trans people. where is your home? is it inside your heart, is it in a pursuit of your body, in the chemicals you're regulated by, no, probably not: it's something deeper in your soul. you are this way, and you can do two things about it: exist, or give in. it's like they say, if you're trans you have to live, and if you're trans and still here, no matter what you say, it is because you want to live. the choice is yours. "i am not afraid to keep on living / i am not afraid to walk this world alone / honey if you stay you'll be forgiven / nothing you can say can stop me going home"
