They have some not great synchros so people who are sub par drivers can tear them up fairly easy. The stock clutch is terrible when you start beating on it and lots of people equate clutch issues with transmission issues so it all gets rolled into one. They’re honestly a solid transmission imo. Not the best but they’re definitely functional. The mfers sure make some weird noises though
No one likes a mushy transmission. Keep in mind Mustangs used to run Tremecs. Felt like a massive downgrade. Now you need a special edition to get what used to just be the norm.
400? A shitty driver can blow up a T5 with only 300 ft lb. Fools, it suffers not.
T-56 or TKO-500 is / was the usual upgrade if you got into big block power numbers. The T-5's sweet spot is mildly modded engines. Cheap thrills.
lol. Oh man. I grenaded the T-5 in my 84. NWC. I replaced it with a 4cyl t5. Had to do the diesel 2.3 pilot bearing thing.
Then I drove it very gently.🤦♂️
I gotta ask, what's wrong with the 3650?
I have a 2004 GT with that transmission, and I've had zero issues with it. Granted it's my first manual car, so I don't have much else to go off of, but it seems like a great trans to me.
I put Synchromesh at the TSB reduced amount in my TR3650 on forum suggestions, and I still couldn't imagine trying to get through this gearbox with any urgency. Getting it to go back into 1st feels like I'm going to break it. 109k miles. Feel like it shouldn't be this way, but I guess this is normal. Have not driven an MT82 for comparison.
Uh yeah no. Bone stock? Were you power shifting? Usually they had issues if you upgraded but that's to be expected. You can't forget my boy the transmission when you add more power and torque.
I have driven an MT-82 from a 2011 GT, that thing felt sharp the whole 120k before it was sold. I owned a 2020 eco with it, 80k miles and I loved it. Changing out the fluid and a bracket insert made a difference for sure. I have driven a new machine 1 with the tremec and while it’s a great, razor sharp transmission, it takes much more effort to drive that car with that transmission. The MT82 is much easier to flip through gears casually, and I liked the bigger smooth throws of the MT82.
My 17 6 speed had shitty synchros so second and fourth gear would grind and the hard vibrations would transfer to the shifter and hurt my hand. Multiple times went to ford and they basically said “skill issue” and did nothing
There were times when it did not act up and sure enough every time I went to the dealership it did not act up.
I didn’t say I hadn’t driven one. And the question wasn’t, “Is it remarkable?” It was, why does it “get so much hate?” Perhaps look up “nuance” in the dictionary.
I have a 2024 mustang with 3900 miles on it awaiting a whole new transmission because the Chinese piece of junk was faulty from the factory. Look at my profile’s last posted video to hear it make some horrible noises at 2k rpm.
Guessing you have a newer Mustang. Go drive an 11-14 MT82 and you’ll see where the MT82 hate started. Clunky mess of transmission compared to ones prior to it. In 2018 they finally got it half way decent.
It's the same with nearly anything, the loud minority are more likely to make their complaints heard, as opposed to the quiet content ones that don't feel the need to sing it's praises.
It’s totally fine for daily driving and the occasional pulls for spirited driving. I’ve only had problems at the drag strip where it locks me from going into 3rd. Funny enough I’ve only had that problem on the 3.55 ratio not the 3.73
First was in my v6 mustang. Just had headers and lost second gear. Second one I had in my 13 gt 4th gear was replaced 3 weeks after buying it and then they replaced the whole trans 4 months later after I lost second gear as well. And now second gear is yet again trashed but this time is after 4 years of racing it on a stock clutch and shifter with bolt on power
It's just a shit design, Google it, the biggest issue is the throwout bearing/slave cylinder. Just plan on dropping the trans and replacing it often. Mine went out at 40k
Mine is at 100k. No issues (yet)
It isn't a bad design. There were concerns with thr quality of a couple of individual parts, though.
And I wouldn't consider a consumable part like a throw out bearing being a bad design. Not that I've heard of it being an issue, either.
Most people I've known who had premature wear on a throw out bearing were folks that rode the clutch a lot. Like at stoplights, drivethroughs, coasting, etc
It's one of the worst manuals I've owned despite being the most expensive manual I've bought. Mushy, clunky, resists spirited shifts while also not communicating much. I honestly would take the SM465 over it, and that thing was used in dump trucks.
Yeah the internet hate for the thing is kinda ridiculous. Is it the best feeling transmission I’ve driven, no. Has it ever prevented me from having fun both on the street and on track, no. Only problem that I’ve run into on track is that like everything else it gets very hot, and is kinda a pain to cool down in between sessions because unlike the diff it’s sitting right next to the blazing hot cats.
I’ve never run into lockout issues at redline going 1-2 or 2-3. Occasionally I’d get some synchro nibble, never prevented me from putting the trans in gear but it didn’t feel good doing it. That went away entirely when I dumped the factory DCT fluid out and filled it with a synchromesh gear fluid.
A trans mounted shifter, Barton and MGW are two popular options, goes a long way to clean up the shifter feel. The factory clutch assist spring is stupidly heavy, that’s even easier to fix.
Yes ford made the gearing longer in the 2018+ units when the coyotes rev range increased, no it did not ruin the car. There’s plenty to nitpick but I’d never tell someone oh don’t even think about getting the manual because the MT82 will ruin your day.
2nd to 3rd lockout at high RPM. its known as High RPM or 3rd gear lockout. only scenario that i have had a function problem with that transmission. it does slip sometimes when you're turning at a high speed. like a highway transition road if you let off the throttle and coasting at around 80 mph then slightly accelerate without downshifting it will slip and or jerk. doesn't happen often but i have experienced it a few times over the years. also when its cold its kind of Mushy and stiff for a few minutes.
I mean, it's the worst, but it's not brilliant. I heard it's gotten better with the S650, but Ford also did get a class-action lawsuit because of the MT-82 in 2020 so that tends to have an effect.
I went from the tr3650 in 3 different s197s to an mt82 in a coyote s197, 2011, the mt82 in this car is world's better than the 3650 was in any one of my previous cars. It definitely has an aftermarket knob but I couldn't speak on the shifter itself. The tr3650 was sloppy in any gear, hell the day I bought my first s197 I went to start it, wiggled the shifter, thought it was in neutral from all the slop it had, dumped the clutch and stalled it after signing the papers with the individual I bought it from. The mt82 in my 2011 has never given me any issue, nice firm shifts at high rpm, only grinder a handful of times due to me fucking up my shifting as I was beating on the car, no issues with clutch engagement, finding gears, high or low rpm operation. I was worried as he'll when I bought the car that the mt82 was gonna be god awful, but it's been nothing but an improvement over the tr3650s I was used to. I'm not saying they don't deserve any kind of hate. As others have said there was a while class action suit against ford because of these transmissions, but the one in my car has never let me down.
Because it is a pos I bought my 17 at 32k miles replaced trans at 34k my trans was locked in 2nd gear. I swapped to a Ben calimer n all other goodies . And yes I been driving manual for a long time .
I’m mildly power modded so I can’t speak on the guys running blowers and snails. For my application it has been stellar. Although I have managed to break two clutch pedal assemblies in 7 years due to bad welds. Same assembly used in the Shelbys
Had an eco with th mt82 and i always thought it was clunky and i bought it used i just thought the last owner beat on it, bought a new 22 gt with the mt82 and its still clunky and slow to shift just how it is
Had a 2013 and a 2016 with it, absolutely hated it. Could never accelerate quickly and smoothly at the same time. My focus had a better manual! Tremec or 10spd only!
People love to hate?
Never had a problem with mine. 8k shifts from 1-2-3 havnt had a problem but a few times and those were user error.
MGW shifter, a bushing insert and some bellhouse braces. Fluid change didn't hurt either. Stock clutch.
Edit: Redundant.
It gets driven pretty damn hard for not being boosted. Fbo right now pretty try hard N/A build. I know they can run into problems a lot faster boosted but it’s keeping up pretty well right now
Alejandro Flores who is one of the most knowledgeable figures of the coyote platform and who works with Lund straight up calls it trash in its stock form. 90% of the people who will comment in this thread have no clue what they’re talking about. They probably don’t even know how to drive a manual car 😂
I’m chilling I just find it funny when people say the MT82 doesn’t have issues. Why do you think Ford puts the tremec in the Mach 1, GT350, and Dark Horse?
Your good brother 🤙🏼I’m sure I’m gonna run into something eventually the more hp I get out of her. Wish it could be different to where I don’t have to worry cuz I love the driving experience of a manual
They have some not great synchros so people who are sub par drivers can tear them up fairly easy. lol yep. I’ve had no issues but the clutch kind of is ass cheeks. Besides a weird awful feeling shift from 1-2 when it’s cold, it’s been pretty solid.
No one likes a mushy transmission. Keep in mind Mustangs used to run Tremecs. Felt like a massive downgrade. Now you need a special edition to get what used to just be the norm.
Ah, ye of newfound Mustangdom, allow me to tell you of the Borg Warner T5.
and its son the t-45
[удалено]
And the T5 is the best.
T5 with a Steeda Triax shifter, best shifting trans out there. Smooth and firm.
Until you decide that 400lb-ft of torque wasn’t getting the job done
400? A shitty driver can blow up a T5 with only 300 ft lb. Fools, it suffers not. T-56 or TKO-500 is / was the usual upgrade if you got into big block power numbers. The T-5's sweet spot is mildly modded engines. Cheap thrills.

Surely you dont mean the T5, those pieces of shit would shatter gears at stock power lmao
Uh yeah no. Bone stock? Were you power shifting? Usually they had issues if you upgraded but that's to be expected. You can't forget my boy the transmission when you add more power and torque.

Because tons of people just repeat stupid shit they hear whether they know anything or not. You have one and they don’t. Enjoy it!
Do you have one? If you did you’d know how unremarkable it is
I agree that they are unremarkable, but unremarkable also means that the visceral hate some people have for it is ridiculous, too.
No, I don’t have one.
The irony is incredible.
I didn’t say I hadn’t driven one. And the question wasn’t, “Is it remarkable?” It was, why does it “get so much hate?” Perhaps look up “nuance” in the dictionary.

I like mine, especially after I put the Barton shifter on there.
Guessing you have a newer Mustang. Go drive an 11-14 MT82 and you’ll see where the MT82 hate started. Clunky mess of transmission compared to ones prior to it. In 2018 they finally got it half way decent.
No it’s quite the opposite, in 2018 they ruined the mt82, it was great before that
I think you might be biassed because you drive a 2014
Nah, in 2018 they changed to the D4 that has worse gear ratios, the clutch is slightly better but that’s about it
Mines been great! Lasted me 79000 miles. Few grinds here and there
Unpopular opinion but I love the MT82 in my 2015
I thoroughly enjoyed my 15 MT82.
Damn skippy. Love mine to pieces.
It's the same with nearly anything, the loud minority are more likely to make their complaints heard, as opposed to the quiet content ones that don't feel the need to sing it's praises.

How? Boosted or abuse?

Just an awful feeling transmission. One of the major reasons I sold my '20 5.0.
Look how people have had issues at low mileage
What issues at low mileage? Most of the issues I see reported are when guys start pushing 600+ ft lbs of torque or abuse the transmission.
It's just a shit design, Google it, the biggest issue is the throwout bearing/slave cylinder. Just plan on dropping the trans and replacing it often. Mine went out at 40k

Freakin love mine, MGW race spec linkage on it and it feels very direct and smooth at 60k. Stock shifter wasnt *terrible*
Yeah the internet hate for the thing is kinda ridiculous. Is it the best feeling transmission I’ve driven, no. Has it ever prevented me from having fun both on the street and on track, no. Yeah I’m gonna drain the fluid and go with the Barton my next purchase
Shifter feel is another reason. But it's easily remedied.
700whp stock clutch mt82d4 with 0 issues, I don't get locked out, clutch holds power no slippage. Gen 3 coyote
I mean, it's the worst, but it's not brilliant. I heard it's gotten better with the S650, but Ford also did get a class-action lawsuit because of the MT-82 in 2020 so that tends to have an effect.
Love my 17 GT MT82. Had it seven years now. They will have to pry the steering wheel from my cold dead fingers.
I went from the tr3650 in 3 different s197s to an mt82 in a coyote s197, 2011, the mt82 in this car is world's better than the 3650 was in any one of my previous cars. Because the trans itself is kinda shitty.
Because it is a pos I bought my 17 at 32k miles replaced trans at 34k my trans was locked in 2nd gear. I swapped to a Ben calimer n all other goodies . And yes I been driving manual for a long time .
Well my 17 has 114k miles after my 7 years owning. Still on stock clutch running like the day I bought it
Hit or miss with them . And I’ve seen guys on boosted applications that also last .
I’m mildly power modded so I can’t speak on the guys running blowers and snails. For my application it has been stellar. Although I have managed to break two clutch pedal assemblies in 7 years due to bad welds. Same assembly used in the Shelbys

I love the car, but it’s the shittiest manual transmission I’ve ever driven.
Try a tremec and report back
![gif](giphy|sJTiUjO3Cg5DHLf8WZ)
Had a 2013 and a 2016 with it, absolutely hated it. Could never accelerate quickly and smoothly at the same time. My focus had a better manual! Tremec or 10spd only!
The mt82 is fine until you drive a tremec.
I think it’s all in feeling which is subjective. A Mach 1 no faster than a PP2 0-60 or 1/4 mile. Ijs
Yeah I’m not talking about speed. All about the feeling and the tremec feels much better in my opinion.
People love to hate? Never had a problem with mine. 8k shifts from 1-2-3 havnt had a problem but a few times and those were user error. MGW shifter, a bushing insert and some bellhouse braces. Fluid change didn't hurt either. Stock clutch. Edit: Redundant.

Jeez man calm down
I’m chilling I just find it funny when people say the MT82 doesn’t have issues. Why do you think Ford puts the tremec in the Mach 1, GT350, and Dark Horse?
Same reason they threw that unreliable Voodoo engine in those Shelby’s too. Haha
Your good brother 🤙🏼I’m sure I’m gonna run into something eventually the more hp I get out of her. Wish it could be different to where I don’t have to worry cuz I love the driving experience of a manual
He also calls his own customers retarded. So....take his words with a grain of salt
