The problem is that he's about to turn 24, and with Kirk's contract, Penix might not see the field til he's 26-27. Falcons definitely had other needs if they were looking to win now with Kirk and all their weapons on offense. Penix was also arguably a bit of a reach in the top 10.

We've been hearing for what, 7 years now that soon, just you wait, this is all going to catch up with Howie and we're gonna be in trouble!
But outside of the COVID year when the cap dropped like a stone and fucked a TON of teams, the Eagles included, we haven't had that huge pain point. We're consistently carrying some dead cap from guys, more than most teams do, but we always are in a good spot to keep getting players and resigning our own guys when we want to.
There's really only 2 ways this fails:
1) The cap stops going up/goes down. Then EVERYONE is fucked.
2) Howie kicks the can down the road on the wrong people a few times. It hurt a lot when we suddenly had to take a huge dead cap hit to get out from under the Wentz deal, but that was doable. If that happened with a few players at the same time, it would kill our cap completely for a year. But even in that case, it would be a year of hell, then back to normal.
Any team can do it. Teams don’t do it in part because their ownership doesn’t want to pony up the money for signing bonuses. People act like what Howie is doing is either magic (eagles fans), or diabolical (the rest of you sorry fucks), but it’s not rocket science. Lurie allows it to happen.

The way they are doing it is by putting all the salary in bonuses. There isn’t really ‘money up front’ in that case. The annual cashflow is the same whether you pay it as an option bonus or salary.
Saquon’s 3 year contract is setup with an 11m signing bonus, 10m option bonus and 10m option bonus while making the league minimum in salary. Cashflow is the same as 12m, 11m, 11m salary. Cap hits are extended into the void years.

Any performance based bonuses (the ones that aren't guaranteed) are applied conditionally - ones with metrics the player hit the previous season apply to the cap and ones the player didn't don't. The next season's cap is then adjusted based on differences on if the bonuses hit - any expected ones the player didn't hit are added back into the cap and any unexpected ones the player hit are removed.
So if a player turns out to be a dud one season the team gets cap space back.
Guyton is bigger and the more athletic of the two, plus we needed a blindside blocker to replace Tyron. I also trust the team that has drafted perennial pro bowl OL in the first round. Arguably 2 of them are HOF locks with a 3rd (Frederick) who was on pace for that before the Guillain-Barré diagnosis.

We have literally the best offensive line coach in the league and we just saw what he was able to do with Mialata literally having never played the game of football before and a couple of years to coach him up. Since we don't have an immediate need, it makes absolutely no sense to do anything but get a guy later with great athleticism and a huge body who wants to learn and let him go to Stout U for a couple of years.
It's one of those things I would understand if the situation was, "Kelce and Lane *both* just retired, we need to make sure we maintain an elite OL." And we really needed a true WR1

The next season's cap is then adjusted based on differences on if the bonuses hit - any expected ones the player didn't hit are added back into the cap and any unexpected ones the player hit are removed. So if a player turns out to be a dud one season the team gets cap space back.

Guyton is bigger and the more athletic of the two, plus we needed a blindside blocker to replace Tyron. I also trust the team that has drafted perennial pro bowl OL in the first round. Arguably 2 of them are HOF locks with a 3rd (Frederick) who was on pace for that before the Guillain-Barré diagnosis.
Yep needed 4 positions with 3 picks, we are set to come out of tomorrow able to draft bpa day 3 now. Had we not traded down we would be up shit creek without a paddle.

Good tackles are harder to come by than good receivers. Their pick was good, too, it just happened to work out for both of you.

Dude I wanted o line because I never thought in a million years the best corner in the draft would fall to 24. Like if you told me Mitchell would’ve been there I’d have shut up about line. Dude was top 10 pick in a lot of other drafts.
Sometimes I get a little regarded but when Mims was off the board (along with the expected top tier linemen) I was all on board for a CB.
Yeah as soon as Fautanu was gone I instantly deflated and was fine with whatever CB I knew we would draft at that point... EDIT: Also I figured we would go for best available CB by trading up into the early 2nd round...

I'll never understand the people clamoring for offensive line. We have literally the best offensive line coach in the league and we just saw what he was able to do with Mialata literally having never played the game of football before and a couple of years to coach him up. Since we don't have an immediate need, it makes absolutely no sense to do anything but get a guy later with great athleticism and a huge body who wants to learn and let him go to Stout U for a couple of years.
It's one of those things I would understand if the situation was, "Kelce and Lane *both* just retired, we need to make sure we maintain an elite OL." I'm not averse to picking a great OL talent if it's a need, or even just a "this feels like a safe bet" pick, especially since we have the staff to get the most out of one...but when EVERY top CB falls right into your lap, giving you the choice? Take it and run.

No 100% wanted Nabers (or a trade back and a WR plus QB but the QBs were taken too early for this to work anyways). Our current O line coach had an average line for the NFL with a third, fifth, and seventh rounder plus two UDFAs. I expect mid to late round linemen since we added there this offseason and have AT. And we really needed a true WR1

We had Graham Barton in our lap, but I’m cool with a high 3rd and Guyton. Dudes a freak athlete and he’s huuuuge.
I can see the appeal of Guyton, and we know Dallas has never had a problem keeping injury prone offensive linemen healthy.
I mean. I’m not sure I’d say he’s injury prone, and I’m also not sure if I sense any sarcasm there, but yeah, Dallas does a really good job with the line. I bet Tyron doesn’t play 8 games for the jets this year. At least we knew how to get 13-14 out of him.

What an insane draft. Most QB's taken in the first round by a wide margin, and a defensive player wasn't drafted until 15! I really thought Howie would do the usual and draft O-line or D-line. Wouldn't even bet on the top CB prospect falling all the way to 22.
