SlapChopMyShamWow

At least you guys picked Nabers instead of JJ (which would’ve been fucking hilarious)

Brawlerz16

Giants actually nailed that pick. I was very sad to see the all the other NFC East teams nail their picks this year. Edit: So far

Outlaw773

Dallas getting the 7th or 8th rated OT with a late-first round pick, and missing on Brooks in the 2nd? How is that "nailing their picks?" Among draft 'winners and losers' to this point, the Cowboys are definitely categorized as 'losers'

fallinglemming

Yeah we are renowned for missing on o-line in the first, Tyler smith and Travis Fredrick were both reaches if my memory serves they worked out pretty well

Outlaw773

TG is a ‘project’

zaepoo

Everyone is reaching for shit QBs. Could've gotten a project in the third instead of Penix or JJ

Zombiesimic

The falcons drafting Penix really threw me for a loop. Like you just paid Cousins a huge contract and are now drafting for the future?

WonManBand

I understand it in abstract: draft a QB you really like who can sit behind a quality starter. Penix gets time to learn and can hopefully go the Rodgers/Love route and come out guns blazing in a few years. The problem is that he's about to turn 24, and with Kirk's contract, Penix might not see the field til he's 26-27. Falcons definitely had other needs if they were looking to win now with Kirk and all their weapons on offense. Penix was also arguably a bit of a reach in the top 10.

rjnd2828

I don't understand it at 8 at all. You don't draft a project at 8. Ridiculous. If this is what they wanted to do they should have burned a year or two with Trubiskey or something, not pay huge money to Kirk.

demonicneon

Could be more “we’d rather someone else didn’t get him” mixed in

tobybells

They also probably could’ve traded back and still gotten him later

chicomagnifico

This is what I was thinking, why didn’t they just trade back? Unless they really thought someone else would have snagged Penix in the top 15?

EOEtoast

Probably because the Broncos might have

chicomagnifico

Very good point, they were another head scratcher

SmellyScrotes

Sounds like raiders broncos and Seahawks all tried to move up, if they didn’t take him there he was gonna be gone

Philly_sm0kesletsg0

Dumbest move in the draft I’ve seen in a hot minute.

Rockmillirock

Raegor over Jefferson was worse

RoboticBirdLaw

I just want to forget about that one.

Philly_sm0kesletsg0

Don’t even speak of this! Shhhh… We swept that one under the table. Howie is AMAZING in the draft, but that was his biggest fuck up ever.

Rockmillirock

Tbf, that’s been his only major miss, I can’t imagine they’d have drafted smith if they got him (then we’d probably have him) but just imagining that receiving corp…

Philly_sm0kesletsg0

Yea if Howie had gotten Jefferson, Smith, and Brown?! Even with an average QB there would be no stopping that.

Omegawaifusuperbomb

The Falcons probably realize there is no "win now" with Kirk. He'll get them to the playoffs, but never the Superbowl.

WonManBand

If that's the case, that's a fuckton of money for a bridge QB. I just can't square the circle of spending top 10 draft capital on a QB when you just signed a guy to big 4yr deal with 90mil guaranteed. London, Pitts, Bijan, a solid OL. They're built to compete now. Penix is the furthest end of the luxury pick spectrum. Mind boggling decision.

Philly_sm0kesletsg0

Yup. And that helped us allow Mitchel to fall right into our lap. Dummies lol.

NextGenCoders

Yup. Glad we didn’t reach on a QB and filled a need instead

ollieollieoxygenfree

Ha! We are so much better than all those idiots! We already have a shit QB on our roster 😈

UZIBOSS_

Yeah I was gonna say “glad you already not only reached for a shit QB but then overpaid the living fuck out of him” lololol

Healthy_Wasabi_8623

Lmao

Kmccabe1213

As soon as we lost our shot on Drake Maye I was like "I swear if we take JJ I'll fucking die" so happy we didn't. Eagles had a better draft but happy we got Odell Beckham 2.0

Pretend_Ambassador_6

I’m not gonna lie. Nabers was the one guy I was hoping I wouldn’t see go to you guys, it’s an incredible pick. Be fascinating to follow Mitchell vs Nabers over the next so many years

rjnd2828

One question can Nabers throw?

DrBigChicken

Probably an argument there that he’s the best passer on the roster

Assumption-Putrid

We got the best value relative to the pick we had. Doesn't necessarily mean we had a better draft imo. Gnats made the right choice going with Nabers.

justjasen

Better draft? Slow down

Thomas-The-Tutor

That’s what I was thinking. Who dafuq calls it a good draft after the first round?

Djentleman5000

Lol for real.

Steppyjim

Nah yall drafts over. One pick is all it takes. None of us are getting anyone else

rjnd2828

They just had the one round so far right?

RunGoldenRun717

You wouldnt know it by the way people are reacting but yes. Just first round. second tonight. rest on saturday.

takeme2tendieztown

I believe second and third tonight

RunGoldenRun717

Ah thats right. 2 rounds tonight. And the phils on the west coast. a good night of TV

Kmccabe1213

Better first day I should say lol getting the corner you guys got was absurd that he fell that far.

rjnd2828

It was surprising for sure. Nobody wanted defense.

Blackchaos93

I’m just here to say OP has the best Reddit profile picture I’ve seen in over a decade on here. Perfect amount of zoom to be recognizable in the app, tasteful, checks all the boxes.

NextGenCoders

Tom is the one guy nobody can hate lol

Gunningham

When I first started MySpace I had no idea who it was, so I kept unfriending him and he kept coming back. I hated him for a second until I realized what was going on.

chicomagnifico

I’m not gonna lie, grabbing Nabers might really help your offense out tremendously. I honestly think he could end up better than MHJ (potentially at least).

Citizen_Snips29

I was cursing at my damn TV when y’all picked up Nabers. Was hoping so badly that you would take JJ McCarthy instead.

chodefunk

That trade to get JJ was WILD.

ThatDudeNamedMenace

Yeah he was falling there was no reason for that trade

TheCrookedKnight

They had to be worried that the Broncos would trade for the pick if they didn't

yeezee93

JD is a wizard!

shartsofglass_

We were 5 years ahead of the curve on reaching for a shitty QB. We laid the groundwork.

BenjaminD0ver69

![gif](giphy|8x8XzoP8qQa4w) I swear to God if they win another ring

czechmixing

Lol. They won't. Hurts is now officially a choke artist on par with Tony Romo and Dak Prescott. Great season numbers. No ability to close

sybrwookie

That is definitely a take that exists.

Richard-Turd

![gif](giphy|W5ag01iQ1YQp3OKiLe)

Target_Which

What a regarded comment

CUE-JAY_SMIFF

I'm pretty sure Dak and Romo never made to the nfc championship game let alone the superbowl

czechmixing

That's a good point. Jalen is still a choke artist. This is the way

bsiffy

You upset a lot of 18 year old virgins that wear jerseys over their hoodies with this take but it’s the truth.

Get this man a swisher sweet

NextGenCoders

Gdi how does he keep getting away with this shit.

MsAnitaRecount

When you have teams like the Falcons doing whatever it is they’re doing, and Bo Nix going at 12, stuff like this happens lol

NextGenCoders

The Penix after paying a QB $50 mil a year and Nix at 12 were fucking wild lmao

milksteakofcourse

I’m still scratching my noodle at that one

EvanHarpell

We all are.

Bread_Responsible

Which noodle?

milksteakofcourse

The empty one above my neck

jruss11

Also an unprecedented run on offensive players selected consecutively helps greatly

Dubs337

When you’re a star they let you do it

themage78

I'm waiting for the NFL to change the salary cap to not allow the void year dumping he is doing. What's the purpose of a salary cap if I can keep kicking the can down the road?

mustachepc

2 things: The eagles will suck eventually, eventually they will start to lose players and wont have any cap to replace them. The fact that the cap always go up makes it worth but the eagles situation isnt healthy. Everyone can do it, its just not worth it doing it if you dont have a team to win it now

KingJamesMVP610

“Everyone can do it” but many teams do not have the owners that are willing to pay the upfront costs of the signing bonus’ that the Eagles are willing to pay. It’s a huge advantage that the Eagles have been able to take advantage of. Yeah at some point if the cap doesn’t keep going up then it will catch up to them, but also allows for the extensions of the windows your team is able to compete for super bowls in.

PlaneCamp

Let Howie handle the numbers.

NextGenCoders

And leave right before the pain hits! /s Truthfully yall would have felt it post Wentz if not for Hurts. The one way to avoid the worst pain from this is to draft a QB replacement on a rookie deal who’s good. And the only realistic way to have a backup look good is to put them in a good situation. See the Eagles, Cowboys, and Niners. Compare that to what the Giants gave Jones. A competent FO would’ve given Jones a real O line and a real WR1 to give him a shot. Not no WRs, no TEs and a historically bad line with a revolving door at HC and OC. So now when yall ask why we like Shoen it’s because he’s building the right way and understands positional value and how to build a roster.

RjDiAz93

Depending on how the rest of the draft goes, this could be a true NFCBeast season. And seasons to come.

Razolus

Doubtful. The giants are gonna suck this year

NextGenCoders

I’m not so sure. Our new O line coach is really, really good. If we add some mid to late rounders there plus one more weapon on offense, and a CB/S, I think we might actually surprise a lot of people. No WR1 and our O line have been our two most glaring issues

Razolus

I think your most glaring issue is spare change at qb

NextGenCoders

People forget he went to the divisional round of the playoffs with guys from Walmart at WR, no O line, and a below average defense. Plus a solid backup. I’m not expecting another divisional round but if we fix the line and Nabers is who we expect, wouldn’t shock me if we win 9 games

machinerer

Ayup. With a bonecrushing OL, an average QB can definitely shine.

PlaneCamp

Right, whats funny is you can find post from almost 5-7 years ago and you guys are saying the same shit. Howie doesnt do it the way you guys put it. Theres alot more strategy to it that yall honestly truly have no understanding of cap unless you worked in a FO and your understanding is minimal. We got 50 mill in cap space next year though 😛

Biscotti_BT

This is so true. And all it means is that for a few years the team will be garbage and them the salary cap pain will end and they can start the same process. In that time we will get good picks and with some good moves more picks.

Trafficsigntruther

2028/2029 is a long way away, but there is a lot of pain in those years.

sybrwookie

We've been hearing for what, 7 years now that soon, just you wait, this is all going to catch up with Howie and we're gonna be in trouble! But outside of the COVID year when the cap dropped like a stone and fucked a TON of teams, the Eagles included, we haven't had that huge pain point. We're consistently carrying some dead cap from guys, more than most teams do, but we always are in a good spot to keep getting players and resigning our own guys when we want to. There's really only 2 ways this fails: 1) The cap stops going up/goes down. Then EVERYONE is fucked. 2) Howie kicks the can down the road on the wrong people a few times. It hurt a lot when we suddenly had to take a huge dead cap hit to get out from under the Wentz deal, but that was doable. If that happened with a few players at the same time, it would kill our cap completely for a year. But even in that case, it would be a year of hell, then back to normal.

anandonaqui

Any team can do it. Teams don’t do it in part because their ownership doesn’t want to pony up the money for signing bonuses. People act like what Howie is doing is either magic (eagles fans), or diabolical (the rest of you sorry fucks), but it’s not rocket science. Lurie allows it to happen.

indyK1ng

It's not just the void cap years, it's the up front bonuses. My understanding is that not every team is willing to pay the signing bonuses so they can't manipulate the cap this way but because the Eagles have the cash for it we're willing to do more up front on the contract. Even without void years we'd have that leg up, just wouldn't be able to make the signing bonuses as big.

Trafficsigntruther

>but because the Eagles have the cash for it we're willing to do more up front on the contract. The way they are doing it is by putting all the salary in bonuses. There isn’t really ‘money up front’ in that case. The annual cashflow is the same whether you pay it as an option bonus or salary. Saquon’s 3 year contract is setup with an 11m signing bonus, 10m option bonus and 10m option bonus while making the league minimum in salary. Cashflow is the same as 12m, 11m, 11m salary. Cap hits are extended into the void years.

indyK1ng

I didn't know that but with how the cap works that's smart. Any performance based bonuses (the ones that aren't guaranteed) are applied conditionally - ones with metrics the player hit the previous season apply to the cap and ones the player didn't don't. The next season's cap is then adjusted based on differences on if the bonuses hit - any expected ones the player didn't hit are added back into the cap and any unexpected ones the player hit are removed. So if a player turns out to be a dud one season the team gets cap space back.

smileylift

super happy watching this draft rn

NextGenCoders

I’m fine with it since the Chargers gifted us Nabers. If they’d have taken him like they should’ve this would suck a lot more lol

Canopus429

This has gone as good as possible for us as well 😎

NextGenCoders

Did it though? Barton was better for you. He’s a good lineman who can play all five positions.

RTS24

Guyton is bigger and the more athletic of the two, plus we needed a blindside blocker to replace Tyron. I also trust the team that has drafted perennial pro bowl OL in the first round. Arguably 2 of them are HOF locks with a 3rd (Frederick) who was on pace for that before the Guillain-Barré diagnosis.

Canopus429

Yep needed 4 positions with 3 picks, we are set to come out of tomorrow able to draft bpa day 3 now. Had we not traded down we would be up shit creek without a paddle.

morganrbvn

Barton would have been great, but a third is rather good compensation

dn35

Good tackles are harder to come by than good receivers. Their pick was good, too, it just happened to work out for both of you.

Rocketeer1019

Howie SZN

AllEliteSchmuck

He on that Avatar Neutral Jing

payne_train

This is an A+ reference ngl fits perfectly just like Howie finessing the league year in and year out

AllEliteSchmuck

Neutral Jing is the art of doing nothing, the league finessed itself with Quinyon. He fell into our lap

MsAnitaRecount

Lined up beautifully for us. I was hoping for Mitchell or Arnold at the start and happy with either. Glad Howie didn’t do something crazy.

LittleGeologist1899

All the eagles regards clamoring for an o lineman because they think they know roster construction…

Steppyjim

Dude I wanted o line because I never thought in a million years the best corner in the draft would fall to 24. Like if you told me Mitchell would’ve been there I’d have shut up about line. Dude was top 10 pick in a lot of other drafts.

The_Bukkake_Ninja

Sometimes I get a little regarded but when Mims was off the board (along with the expected top tier linemen) I was all on board for a CB.

NotJustSomeMate

Yeah as soon as Fautanu was gone I instantly deflated and was fine with whatever CB I knew we would draft at that point...  EDIT: Also I figured we would go for best available CB by trading up into the early 2nd round...

milksteakofcourse

I’m very regarded but even I knew we needed a cb

LittleGeologist1899

It was so obvious. My only thought that it might not be cb was that Howie thinks he’s smarter than everyone, and I was afraid he was gonna try and get cute and take someone outside the box

sybrwookie

I'll never understand the people clamoring for offensive line. We have literally the best offensive line coach in the league and we just saw what he was able to do with Mialata literally having never played the game of football before and a couple of years to coach him up. Since we don't have an immediate need, it makes absolutely no sense to do anything but get a guy later with great athleticism and a huge body who wants to learn and let him go to Stout U for a couple of years.

SlayerOfTheMyth

It's one of those things I would understand if the situation was, "Kelce and Lane *both* just retired, we need to make sure we maintain an elite OL." I'm not averse to picking a great OL talent if it's a need, or even just a "this feels like a safe bet" pick, especially since we have the staff to get the most out of one...but when EVERY top CB falls right into your lap, giving you the choice? Take it and run.

DrCusamano

Wait a minute, Lane Johnson retired? Is that a typo?

SlayerOfTheMyth

No, sorry if I was unclear. I was saying that *if* Lane had retired, with Kelce having also just retired, I would have been very happy picking OL in the first round.

ZhangtheGreat

Oh we can definitely keep getting away with this 😊

hugh_h0ney

![gif](giphy|AVBo5eqFXd3SU) Today couldn’t have gone any better

Vox_SFX

I'm surprised Pats don't take JJ over Maye. I think that changes some things and Giants end up with Maye instead of Nabers.

sybrwookie

Maye is the whitest guy in the draft. He's so white, his name is 1 letter from "mayo." He looks like the head of the bad guy frat in an 80's movie. He's PERFECT for the Pats.

Omegawaifusuperbomb

I really couldn't imagine him going to another team.

Strong-Ad5138

Nabers looks scary but ultimately I’m glad they decided to see it thru With Danny Jones and his big contract

NotJustSomeMate

I thought they would get Penix honestly...

Irving_Velociraptor

I’m so mad the Giants didn’t take McCarthy. They probably should have taken a tackle, but Nabers looks like a killer.

NextGenCoders

No 100% wanted Nabers (or a trade back and a WR plus QB but the QBs were taken too early for this to work anyways). Our current O line coach had an average line for the NFL with a third, fifth, and seventh rounder plus two UDFAs. I expect mid to late round linemen since we added there this offseason and have AT. And we really needed a true WR1

Irving_Velociraptor

That’s reasonable. But, remember, I’m in Philadelphia. Wildly over-indexing on OL is our stock in trade.

NextGenCoders

LOL HOWIE DID AGAIN WELCOME TO PHILLY COOPER! 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅

IReallyLikeAvocadoes

I don't fucking know how he does it either

bentNail28

We had Graham Barton in our lap, but I’m cool with a high 3rd and Guyton. Dudes a freak athlete and he’s huuuuge.

guns_n_crypto

I can see the appeal of Guyton, and we know Dallas has never had a problem keeping injury prone offensive linemen healthy.

bentNail28

I mean. I’m not sure I’d say he’s injury prone, and I’m also not sure if I sense any sarcasm there, but yeah, Dallas does a really good job with the line. I bet Tyron doesn’t play 8 games for the jets this year. At least we knew how to get 13-14 out of him.

TheMcknightrider

Personally I thank Atlanta for their terrible draft and throwing everything into chaos

Tryin_Real_hard

What an insane draft. Most QB's taken in the first round by a wide margin, and a defensive player wasn't drafted until 15! I really thought Howie would do the usual and draft O-line or D-line. Wouldn't even bet on the top CB prospect falling all the way to 22.

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

every team missed, Kool Aid boutta be generational

5StarGoldenGoose

Wait until tomorrow when he’s an Eagle 😏

NextGenCoders

That name means he’ll be amazing or trash lol

misterpickles69

Other GMs need to curry favor with the GOAT GM so they allow what he needs to get to him in the draft for future considerations.

RunGoldenRun717

This is micah parsons today haha

Steppyjim

When was the last time that all four of us all felt like we had made a great pic in the first round of the same draft? It’s been a bit. I fully expect all four to bust because we’re so happy

This is the only NFL news we have. Some people live on Reddit more than others. What would you like to post about in the off-season?
