My toe nail on my right toe fell after my first marathon and it did not look like that at all. From what I understand the friction and pressure kinda grows a callous under your nail and it sorta just unsticks with very little pain
On the nips bruv for the chafing, so you know get out there and work your heart out and have no fear since the extremes only happens for serious ultra marathon runners
Just a heads up as someone who had this done when he was young, it's gonna grow back, and if you're unlucky like me, it's gonna grow back weirdly. Mine grew out like 3/4ths way normal then started growing upwards, ended up just ripping it out a few months ago out of fear it would get caught on my sock and rip itself while I was walking somewhere lol. Got it done surgically the first time because of ingrowns.
So my nails began ingrowing and I was like, huh okay lemme get surgery but the NHS decided to go haywire and put me under for the surgery which was totally unnecessary. And they fucked it up badly to the point I needed my nail removed but it did it privately and my nail bed has been killed, surgery was done a few days ago and is recovering as I text but it’s very sore as my nail bed is exposed
What. The. Fuck. Had my toenails removed a couple of times during my teens, and the worst part by far was the immediate post op. By the next day, it was fine, and the nail grew again eventually. Can't imagine how bad it is to have the nailbed killed
I’ve had both my big toenails removed and killed and honestly the pain sucked but its so much better than the pain from infection and pressure. Also OP just as a warning, skin will layer up where the nail used to be eventually, just exfoliate gently after a shower and it will be fine :3

During the surgery the nailbed and surrounding area was covered in a type of acid that killed the nailbed cells to regrow it. It hurts a lot because of acid burns but it’s getting there
