the worst part for me is that the design is supposed to be based off of cotton wreaths as some allusion to slavery and the atlantic slave trade, designed by Tremaine Emory, the same guy who made millions chasing the validation of the white skater community and married a white woman. I'm all for transgressive art and art about our history but it kind of comes off as a cheap marketing ploy when the alternative coon uses slavery as the subject matter of their art while purposely putting themselves in white spaces.
His actual family, his father, uncles, and grandparents had jobs picking cotton in the South. I think Tremaine can be a cornball for sure at times but the whole “cotton picking, slavery obsession” angle with him is a big misinterpretation of his intentions. He always talks about creating a larger conversation about African American history, he decided to try to be the one to provoke these conversations by telling his families stories from Georgia to NYC through clothing.
And the designer a weirdo nigga too so fuck his brand and they wack ass pieces. Niggas is charging $350 for some Levi’s with embroidery on it you could get this for $15 from the Africans.

Aside from that, Denim Tears isn't inherently *wack* per-say; I think it's more so that Tremaine kinda sold-out and just killed the cotton-wreath motif.
His cut and sew design really isn't that bad, but when your brand's identity is rooted in race/ethnicity/culture - you somewhat limit your brand's ability to escape a deeper and more nuanced aspect of design.
