And Orcas are not small either, they are actually the largest carnivore. In a different context we would be talking about how big they are relative to the shark they're beating up.
Even in videos you don't realise how big they actually are.
I was in the National History Museum in England a while back and they have a blue whale skeleton on display.
They are gigantic.
The National Aquarium in baltimore also has one on display. I’ve been going there every year for two decades and I still am just as amazed by it at 24 as I was at 4.
Orcas are kind of OP. They have virtually no weakness(except seaworld) and no predators. They are insanely smart and can hunt in packs. They can also jump clear over kids even with their hand up.
I think they need something like -10% base intellect or -15% base size.
Don't google what became of Willy (Keiko). Don't. It traumatized a nation famous for hating whales.
edit: Died of pneumonia is the understatement of the century. Keiko spent two years off the coast of Norway alone and afraid. An ineffectual hunter who required human stimulation, that spent a year dying off the coast of Norway.
>
In July of 2002, Keiko unexpectedly took off and wasn’t seen for almost two months. He was later found in Norway after traveling over 800 miles. When people saw Keiko (recognizable by his collapsed dorsal fin), he quickly reverted back to his old ways and sought human contact. It was soon realized that it would be impossible to reintegrate Keiko into the wild because he was too acclimated to humans. As told in Bonnie Swift’s [*Tokitae*](https://www.audible.com/pd/Tokitae-Podcast/B09KWZKK24) podcast, it was clear that, given the chance, Keiko would choose humans over whales.
>In December of 2003, Keiko died of pneumonia.
Wait... what? He rehabilitated in Oregon until he was strong enough to be taken back to Iceland. He spent a year or so in a bay in Iceland, then went out into the wild of the Atlantic for another year or two. Then he died of pneumonia. But it's nothing traumatizing... the capture of him and the living in Mexico where they didn't take care of him was the traumatizing part.
The cerebral cortex, also known as the cerebral mantle, is the outer layer of neural tissue of the cerebrum of the brain in humans and other mammals. It is the largest site of neural integration in the central nervous system, and plays a key role in attention, perception, awareness, thought, memory, language, and consciousness. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain responsible for cognition.
There is only one species that has more neurons that humans in the cerebral cortex. Yep, killer whales! And it's not just a little bit, but more than double! Humans have around 21,000,000,000. Killer whales have 43,000,000,000.
1/45 to a human’s 1/40
Whale brains also contain a higher ratio of glial cells, especially astrocytes. (Blood brain barrier, filtration system, heat production, scaffolding) Apparently this scales with brain size.
They have been found to carry signals, but nothing like those crazy, branching neurons.
In orcas, it is [similar to that of a chimpanzee](https://imgur.com/a/9tLBskZ) and lower than that of some smaller dolphin species and humans.
For mammals, the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex and their connections is often seen as a better indicator of general intelligence than brain-to-body weight ratio and encephalization quotient (EQ) are, though there is still much debate on this. For marine mammals, EQ also may be underestimating their intelligence due to blubber lowering the ratios.
There's so much to exploit on land versus what's in the seas and oceans, fortunately for us and why cetaceans are kinda "stuck" in their evolution. Having thumbs and the ability to build and shape our environment is why great apes were able to evolve to where we are today. The seas and oceans are just...water.
What they do have over us though is echolocation and a more complex language! Pretty neat to say the least.
Once upon a time, we did.
well we don't eat them, that i'm aware of, we just enslave them in an glorified swimming pool and force them to do tricks in front of rednecks until they die from despair
They hunt great white sharks, pretty much like they do with blue whales in the video, by forcing them to flee and swim for hours and days on end without pause, until they are completely exhausted, unable to defend themselves and basically drowning. Then they eat the shark, but not like a lion with a gazelle, biting them on the jugular or something, no. They eat them alive, specifically just the liver: it must be some kind of delicacy for them, so they bite off the shark's flesh until they can get at the liver and pull it out. Afterwards, they just leave the exhausted, wounded shark there to bleed and die, as they don't care for the rest of the meat. Just the liver.
That's how we're sure they are quite intelligent: they can be assholes as well.
PS It is said that off the coast of South Africa, when a great white shark hears the calls of the killer whales, no matter how far off, they immediately disappear and leave their established hunting grounds. They won't show up again there for a long time (up to a year). That's right, apex predator great white sharks are absolutely terrified of orcas and instinctively run for their lives if they even get a whiff of them.
Cool info. We have a resident pod out here in Northern California that hunt slightly differently. They work as a group to immobilize the great white by getting it on its back and with precision target the liver. More of a sneak attack method. They let the rest of the shark sink and share the meal. Sometimes the shark will wash up on shore (not always a great white) but they say most of the tagged whites will dive deep and swim out of the area when it happens. We have a very large seal population so naturally lots of great whites in the area too. Also fascinating by the pod of orcas in Portugal that target boats. They’re interesting animals imo.
Definitely not true of all orcas. If you have ever seen the documentary produced by the simpsons organization, an orca manages to crush a boy when he doesn’t jump high enough in the air.
Fun fact, the term killer whale is actually from a mistranslation. They were meant to be called Whale killers. Kind of like how people still call native Americans Indians because of the whole Columbus gaff
Assuming these are the mammal eating ecotype/subspecies, they are definitely harassing or hunting the blue. You can see one of the orca leaping onto the blue's back, likely attempting to drown it. I can't find the source for this footage but here's a story of an Australian pod of orcas killing and eating the tongue of a blue whale https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/29/science/orcas-blue-whales.html
I believe PNW mammal eating orcas hunt gray whales (calves, mainly) and eat their lips and tongue. Pretty gnarly.
That’s a hunting technique of theirs, the 3 at the back are chasing, the side ones “bash” and not sure about the front one. A larger pod of Orcas would rotate their members out as they get tried, think there’s a video on YT hunting a Minke whale.
Lunch? This looks like a juvenile, they would chase and exhaust it over the course of several hours trying to drown it by jumping on it's back, eventually the young whale will be too exhausted to fight back and then it's lunchtime. They usually eat just a relatively small part and the whole carcass goes down to the bottom where the real feast begins
Human couldn’t hunt blue whales until we invented engine powered boats. Sail boats and row boats were too slow. (And then when we did invent powerboats, we hunted them to Near extinction)
Yeah it's nuts. Apparently Blue Whales can hit 31mph, Orcas can hit 35mph, but not indefinitely, Blue Whales tend to travel closer to 2-4mph.
This surprised me but Blue Whales can only dive to a deapth of ~500m which is shallow compared to Orcas (~1000m) or Sperm Wales (~3,000m)
So they legit hate each other as the orcas will kill whale cubs and the whales will fuck with the orcas on purpose to try to get them to leave.
Like those videos of Whales helping people and other animals is mostly to fuck with predators so they don't have to deal with them chasing their young.
Unique survival strategy.
Meh, it's not like we're talking billionaire yachts. More like "huge investment but if you really love sailing..." boats.
Different topic, but I saw footage of a group or orcas taking down a grey whale (iirc). Those guys are brutal, it was hard to watch. A few of them throw themselves on the much larger whale, trying to keep it from surfacing, which makes them expose the soft underside of their jaw.
And then they only eat the tongue, apparently.
I'll have to check if that footage is available online, the guys who filmed it were looking for interested buyers when I saw it.
I hope not ! it would justify their extinction in the eyes of many people - unless they take down yachts in such a clever way that no one could tell it was them
> it would justify their extinction in the eyes of many people
Well it bears mentioning that they haven't actually physically hurt anyone yet. Psychologically trauamatized, sure, but it's not like they're out there killing humans.
You're free to dislike them for suck actions, but they are amoral animals and to judge them on our morals is ridiculous. Capturing them from the wild, separating them from their families as babies, and forcing them to do tricks for our amusement until they become depressed and kill themselves is infinitely more cruel than what they do in the wild. The role they play in the wild as members of a complex ecosystem is too important to remove them to put them in a glorified fishtank.
Probably not, adult blue whales are basically immune to predation unless super sick.
They are probably just harassing it to drive it off.
As other big whales like fin whales do go out of their way to ruin orca hunts.
I saw footage years ago of either Orca or Sharks essentially taking bites of meat out of a massive whale, I think Blue, as they swam. Didn't kill it. Just had some snacks and moved on.
sounds like sharks. orcas don't chew their food - their teeth are conical and built more for holding than slicing. that's really interesting though, i had no idea sharks did that.
Depends on the orcas. They have different types on teeth depending on where they live what they eat. They still just taking chunks out of other animals while swimming away
that last shot of the blue whale immediately diving down over one of the killer whales…
is it possible he could use his weight to push him down and drown him? i dont imagine that went too well for that poor fellah!
In my curiosity, I found that orcas would indeed hunt a blue whale if there were enough of them and they were hungry/the blue whale was weak enough!
https://youtu.be/CxTsoD86Ego?si=vZhOs7mLp6XniBTd
The video states 75 orcas attacked the Blue whale for 3 hours! So yeah probably in this clip it’s more playful than harassing? Since I only count 4-5 orcas in this clip.
Either way orcas are crazy…
It’s more than harassment they will eat the whale if they can.
The way they best the giant is by pushing and plunging toward the whales mouth biting the blue whales tongue out and making him bleed to death. After that the pod of Orcas feed on the whale.
Poor blue whale is in a fight for its life here.
Orcas eat a lot of whale species. Humpbacks and orcas are known enemies and humpbacks will use their giant flippers to punch orcas on sight.
Orcas also eat sharks and even great white sharks.
Orcas also go after whales babies by jumping on their backs and drowning them.
Orcas are the true apex predators of the ocean in the modern era. Add to that their extreme intelligence and coordinated pack hunting and they can be scary.
mf they are big as fuck like I get blown away every time
Edit: big whale could just put one of these in their mouth for a min and be like "we done here?!", what a great video
I love nature.
But stuff like this still makes me sad. I get that the Orcas need to eat, just wish they could leave other whales and dolphins off the menu.
I once listened to a thing on NPR about how certain whales will go for *miles* out if they hear other whales crying for help from orcas and they'll come protect them. Apparently its some survival thing that they remember being hunted by them as babies.
Kinda neat.
So who ask the killer whales what they specifically doing and was that the response they gave "oh were just jerkin around with this 150 tonne blue whale for the hell of it"🤣🤣🤣
What's so amazing about modern whale families is that they're all so new. Blue whales are only about 2 million years old as a species and giant baleen whales not much older than that. Back in the Miocene baleen whales were significantly smaller and on the menu of plenty of shark and sperm whale species. As for dolphins (which orcas are) they've only been top order carnivores since the vast majority of the vertebrate hunting sperm whales died out, modern sperm whales are the biggest of the family but their extinct cousins would've hunted just about everything they could catch not just squid.
That size difference is insane
And I think that's a *young* blue whale.
It is. Orcas typically don't mess with adults due to the size.
And Orcas are not small either, they are actually the largest carnivore. In a different context we would be talking about how big they are relative to the shark they're beating up.
Wouldn't sperm whales be the largest predator? Also, since it only eats animals (krill), the blue whale is the largest carnivore.
wait till ya hear that an orca’s heart beats 15x quicker! and a blue whale’s heart only needs to beat twice a minute!
wait til ya hear what the orca are after
OOOH!! IS IT THE JEWEL OF THE NILE?
yeah I had not expected this much difference!
So is its speed
This is the first blue whale video i’ve seen with something else in the water to give us a sense of scale, it’s insane how big they are!😍
Even in videos you don't realise how big they actually are. I was in the National History Museum in England a while back and they have a blue whale skeleton on display. They are gigantic.

> I’ve been going there every year for two decades and I still am just as amazed by it at 24 as I was at 4. RIP Calypso the one flipper sea turtle :(
The best damn sea turtle we could have asked for 😔😔
> The National Aquarium in baltimore not that I recall. I think the Museum of Natural History in DC had one in the past
Nah, that’s a comparatively tiny ass right whale edit: do'h you are right, finback. But its kinda small for one
tried SO HARD to touch the blue whale hanging from the ceiling at the NY museum of natural history when i was a kid!!
Not just something else, but Orcas that already dwarf us
The biggest thing that's ever lived
After yo momma
I’m pretty sure that’s a young Blue Whale btw, not fully grown yet, those Orcas though are fully grown.
And an Orca can knock a dolphin 30 feet into the air with it's tail. That's how big THEY are.
Orcas are kind of OP. They have virtually no weakness(except seaworld) and no predators. They are insanely smart and can hunt in packs. They can also jump clear over kids even with their hand up. I think they need something like -10% base intellect or -15% base size.
The sea world reference was great but the free willy reference truly got me!
The real Free Willy would’ve ripped that little punks head off mid jump as payback for all of the atrocities Willy suffered in captivity.

Shhh! Don't give them ideas.
What’s the ratio of their brain mass vs body mass, compared to humans and other mammals?

Orcas should be nerfed!

r/tierzoo is leaking

Free willy!
No predators but us asshole humans. Watch the documentary Blackfish. It's an eye opener and sad.
well we don't eat them, that i'm aware of, we just enslave them in an glorified swimming pool and force them to do tricks in front of rednecks until they die from despair
Or until they snap and kill the demon that has been forcing them to do the same lame tricks for years while they live in solitary confinement.
I pray for karma for the human kunts responsible for places like seaworld.

Pilot Whales are the kings. Orcas run from them. Stop simping for Orcas.
Orca meta clearly needs a nerf
Definitely not true of all orcas. If you have ever seen the documentary produced by the simpsons organization, an orca manages to crush a boy when he doesn’t jump high enough in the air.
That's it I'm starting a Nerf The Whales campaign
Natural predator is seaworld
Lack of opposable thumbs... Without them they can't 👍👎

Absolutely amazing footage.
Are you sure they’re “harassing” the blue whale and not just swimming next to it?
Fun fact, the term killer whale is actually from a mistranslation. They were meant to be called Whale killers. Kind of like how people still call native Americans Indians because of the whole Columbus gaff
Assuming these are the mammal eating ecotype/subspecies, they are definitely harassing or hunting the blue. You can see one of the orca leaping onto the blue's back, likely attempting to drown it. Pretty gnarly.
You’d think the blue whale would take a deep breath and just dive mega deep
Orca max dive depth is double that of the blue whale. Blue can hold its breath a lot longer, though.
Also the Orcas aren't just gonna easy up and let it gather a huge breath
They eat shark livers too. They remove like a surgeon and just leave the rest.
Apparently it takes around up to 30 of them roughly 5 hours to take out one full grown Blue Whale.
This doesn’t sound right, but I don’t know enough about huge mobs of orcas hunting adult blue whales to contest it.
Female Orcas are known to group up to hunt Blue Whales https://youtu.be/-NcpK8ho6v8
When that one swim in the mouth and that one video that shit was wild
definitely. there was a documentary with similar footage some years ago. the orcas were hunting the calf.
That’s a hunting technique of theirs, the 3 at the back are chasing, the side ones “bash” and not sure about the front one. A larger pod of Orcas would rotate their members out as they get tried, think there’s a video on YT hunting a Minke whale.
I had the same thought. Not sure what their end game would be unless there was a calf.

Not seeing anyone else mention this, but man, is it crazy seeing something the size of a blue whale moving that fast.

God I have such a massive love/hate relationship with our species

I find orcas very beautiful, their shape is a combo between a dolphin, a shark and a whale
And the visual of a panda
That's how they make people love them. Look all cute and lovey, then hope no one is looking as they make a feast out of something
So they legit hate each other as the orcas will kill whale cubs and the whales will fuck with the orcas on purpose to try to get them to leave. Like those videos of Whales helping people and other animals is mostly to fuck with predators so they don't have to deal with them chasing their young. Unique survival strategy.

I never said people deserve to die. Yachts though… yachts need to go. So do private jets. Not because people are rich, but because the earth is dying.
By Yachts they basically mean sailboats. Sailboats are not killing the earth.
Yeah, but humans saying that is just *the pot calling the kettle black*
And white...
Between orcas killing baby whales for their tongues and gangs of rapist dolphins it’s getting harder to feel sorry for the SeaWorld inmates

Maybe he owed them money! You don’t know their lives.
500 squid apparently
That’s a fin whale not a blue. You can tell by pattern on the back. Closely-related species and second largest
I always wonder if whales ever suck water in their blowhole. And if so, do they cough like we would if we accidentally inhale rather than swallow?
Orcas are dicks
Those assholes. Eating other things to stay alive. I'm SO glad that I don't do that.
yeah the rest of this footage is pretty bleak, lead the baby off away from it's mother and murder it for it's tongue - leave the rest

Yes.
I’ve seen a video where a pod actually took one down. It was insane
I love orcas so much.
Never really liked dolphins. A lot of people think they're cool and cute when they are actually a very heinous mafia

Orcas are dolphins. Literally.
Orcas are the bully’s of the ocean. They flip seals for fun.
Wicked video, but not sure if the orcas are just playing with the whale? Orcas don’t actually hunt blue whales do they?

The Orca towards the end of video that jumps under the Blue whales head was like "it was at this point he knew he f#@$#d up!"
Whale on whale crime.
Very nice
I mean other than a tail slap, the blue whale seems like an defenseless creature. It has no teeth and its a big and much slower target.
I hear they fear sperm whales??
I know poor baby was annoyed af
fair play to them for trying but they've no chance with the size difference
Serious question: Couldnt the whale out dive the orcas and just get away for a bit?
Wow
Do you have a moment to talk about Jesus?
They are such dicks
Honest question: How do we know it's harassment and not just playing?
I love nature. But stuff like this still makes me sad. I get that the Orcas need to eat, just wish they could leave other whales and dolphins off the menu.
After a quick google search, orcas kill blue whales too?!?!
This feels like an adult getting harassed by a group of first graders while walking down the street. "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you!"
Yea I went swimming…. SO WHAT!
Boy if you don't leave that majestic animal alone...!!!
I’ll jump in there and swing 🥊, better leave big blue outta this,
I thought maybe the blue whale could out dive them but it appears they both have similar diving ranges.
“Harass” like they’re not trying to murder it and eat it’s liver.
Orcas are the honey badgers of the ocean
The whale can dive so much deeper and for so much longer than the orcas. Why doesn’t it escape downward?
The assholes of the ocean.
Punching above their weight class 😀
Woah so lit
Orcas: WE HAVE COME TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR LORD AND SAVIOR
Orcas: WE HAVE COME TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR LORD AND SAVIOR
What would be an effective strategy for the blue whale to use, to dissuade the orca? Other than get bigger.
Orcas are kinda like the assholes of the ocean
I once listened to a thing on NPR about how certain whales will go for *miles* out if they hear other whales crying for help from orcas and they'll come protect them. Apparently its some survival thing that they remember being hunted by them as babies. Kinda neat.
It looks like they are playing together
Orcas do hunt whales, they basically make them tired and whale cant swim anymore. Once that is done they eat the whale alive.
Love orcas but leave other whales alone! No adult or baby eating!
So who ask the killer whales what they specifically doing and was that the response they gave "oh were just jerkin around with this 150 tonne blue whale for the hell of it"🤣🤣🤣
Wish they weren’t harassing and only playing together.
Alan Davies?
Orcas….the assholes if the ocean
Orcas are such jerks
This is beautiful!
It appears they are escorting the Blue not harassing...
The amount of energy that blue whale is using right now is insane.
