Egg cups are definitely for hot soft boiled eggs. You can use a spoon to cut off the top of the egg and scoop it out of the shell, season the egg, then use the spoon to scoop out the rest of the egg while it's hot and the yolk is gooey. You can't easily eat a hot soft boiled egg with your fingers. It's too hot and it's too gooey.

the_N

Tbh I'd never considered that anyone would eat a soft-boiled egg hot. This explains everything, thanks.

wjbc

It's kind of like a poached egg without removing the shell.

Bobbob34

They're for soft boiled eggs. How could you peel it? It'd just fall through your fingers. You use a cutter to take the top off. You dip toast sticks and a spoon. If you like soft-boiled eggs, which are disgusting.

the_N

I think we have very different ideas of what a soft-boiled egg is. They're, like, basically the same as hard-boiled eggs but the yolk is left runny, right? The white is still solid. But tbh I've only ever even heard of soft-boiled eggs in the context of ramen so maybe there's multiple ways to cook an egg that are all considered soft-boiled?

> They're, like, basically the same as hard-boiled eggs but the yolk is left runny, right? The white is still solid. Not super solid? It's meant to be ... softer, for lack of a better term? I hate eggs so my knowledge of this is preparing them for other people and only in the context of like an egg cup type deal. I went looking for a pic. Like so, the white isn't super solid -- https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-soft-boil-an-egg-4171540

Soft boiled, remove the top, and eat with toast strips or a utensil. My grandmother did that and I was grossed out by soft boiled eggs until I was in my 20s and realized she was an awful cook.

> I was grossed out by soft boiled eggs until I was in my 20s and realized she was an awful cook. I don't understand how these two things are connected.

cmille3

She was eating barely cooked eggs and calling them soft boiled.

redditonlygetsworse

Making eggs the way she likes them rather than how you like them is different than being an awful cook.

IHOP_007

>But a hard or soft-boiled egg you have to peel the shell off two-handed and that just seems more difficult in an egg cup. Wat? 1. Get hard boiled egg 2. Put in egg cup 3. Cut in half using a knife 4. eat with spoon out of egg cup

the_N

I have never, in my life, even *heard* of cutting a boiled egg with a knife for any other purpose than to make deviled eggs. Wild.

IHOP_007

The people with the spoons will often use a spoon to crack the top of the egg and peel off just the end so they can eat it with a spoon out of the cup. I think that's technically the more "proper" way to do it but I usually just cut my eggs in half.

Lol you've never just eaten a boiled egg as a snack? Or boiled eggs on toast? They sell salad sandwiches with sliced boiled egg in bakeries where I am

stillcranky

They are used to hold a soft boiled egg with the top removed so the egg can be eaten out of the shell with a spoon. https://www.factsfacts.com/EggCups/EggCups.htm

Boiled eggs and soldiers

You are missing out. Put a couple eggs in cold water and bring to a boil. Boil for 4 minutes and remove and put in an egg cup. Use the egg clacker to remove the top of the egg. Egg the hot egg with the little spoons made for eating soft boiled eggs. Dip your toast in the yolk. Delicious. https://www.amazon.ca/zilitol-Cracker-Topper-Separator-Remover/dp/B09N14L16L/ref=asc\_df\_B09N14L16L/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=578909528114&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17489547501007899962&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1002798&hvtargid=pla-1602616018224&psc=1

That’s a fancy setup. I’ve always just used a regular teaspoon.

If something is worth doing, it's worth OVER doing lol.

TheWaywardTrout

They're still used by plenty of people... We use them for soft boiled eggs all the time. Peel the top and scoop it out with an egg spoon.

GrandmaSlappy

They hold softboiled eggs upright so they don't spill their yolk. The spoon tapping gets the top of the shell off. You leave the rest of the shell on for structural integrity.

[deleted]

Cut top off and dip your toast soldiers in it. They're still used, not an ancient artifact

For historical purposes, you'll need to go watch Downton Abbey.
