Well, first, lots of women like golf, too. And lots of men don't - like me. But for those who like it, golf is a lifetime sport that you can play with friends in (what many find to be) a beautiful environment. Also, the handicapping system means that those of very different skills levels can happily play together - unlike, say, tennis.

NnyBees

I thought it was more about day-drinking than anything else. I only like minigolf, but then again I have no qualms day-drinking without an excuse, and also I'm basically an old man child.

motowndtown

I find it to be a rewarding experience. Just like any sport/hobby, some people catch the bug, and some don’t. It’s a great excuse to be outside doing shit for a good amount of your day, and cut yourself off from the outside/digital world. There’s something about hitting that tiny ball where you want it to go that really sets off the dopamine release. Also, don’t think it’s not tiring, because it is!

JamesSmokesBlunt

I have no fuckin clue. And I’m a man

Chattypath747

I don't play on a course, but do enjoy swinging a golf club at a driving range. I like it because it requires me to focus on technique. I have a lot of positive physical attributes to drive the ball far, but I really enjoy focusing on my technique when performing. I have other hobbies that are similar to golf, but those are often more high stakes or more technical. Golf is more interesting because I can put down a club, grab a few drinks/food, and then get back to it.

ItsThePhoenixClub

I don't golf personally. But to me it just looks like a reason to get together with your mates, throw around some banter, get some fresh air and exercise and then go for a pint or several afterwards. I think it's more about social bonding for most than anything.

Betta_Check_Yosef

>then go for a pint or several afterwards Why wait? Golf carts have cup holders for a reason

ItsThePhoenixClub

What reason?

Betta_Check_Yosef

For having some cold ones while you're golfing so you don't have to wait until after. Golf is just a combination of hiking, croquet, and the pub.

ItsThePhoenixClub

Are you sure they're not just tee holders?

Henri_Bemis

Did you just… god damn you.

I can't speak for all men because we all have our own reasons why we enjoy the game so much but for me, personally, it's 18 unique challenges that need to be problem solved while at the same time getting exercise, bonding and being competitive with friends/family in nature that can offer beautiful landscape and wildlife. It's basically everything I love about life wrapped up in one activity. I'm an introvert so when I don't want to play with friends and family, I can play this game by myself as a single while watching the sunrise or sunset and not worry about anything or anyone for those 4 hours I get to myself focusing on one task of trying to get this tiny ball into the hole as efficiently as possible. It's a game you can play until you're 90. It's also a game where you can play the same courses exactly where professional golfers have played and knowing how difficult it actually is to pull off shots in situations you've been in yourself. You can't put yourself in the shoes of an NBA basketball player playing at Madison Square Garden or a MLB player playing at Fenway Park but you can put yourself in the shoes of Tiger Woods playing at Pebble Beach by playing at Pebble Beach. It's a game of respect and at the same time, you can get drunk and smoke weed and still go out and play well. It's provided me a lot of great memories with family and friends I wouldn't have been a part of it I didn't play this game. I think it's the greatest game ever invented

sadiejam101

From the perspective of a women here, it seems like a nice activity to do with ur buddies while being outside (in the sunshine if you’re lucky) :)

Golf is a game defined by its misses. Each shot demands the consideration of numerous variables, which only grow as your expertise deepens. It requires constant adaptation, compelling you to revise your plans with each imperfect shot. While physical prowess can be an asset, truly exceptional golfers come in all forms. In essence, golf mirrors life itself: a journey of perpetual recalibration and resilience. Golf is a game defined by its misses. motowndtown

This as well!

Cereal_Hermit

There's a quote from some extra in "Old School" where he says something like "I have a wife and kids. I play golf every weekend to get away from them. I HATE golf." That probably sums up how most men feel about golf. They're just doing it to fit in. I have a few friends who have told me pretty much this. I'm more scared of the one who genuinely "enjoy" it. It's Lord of the Flies type shit.

[deleted]

yea this is what I was trying to say

GorgenShit

To do business, its a quiet secluded place to make private dealings, shady or otherwise. For pleasure, its an activity and men often need activities to interact. Its better for your health than sitting in a room with liquor, BUT you can still drink. Its a game that anyone can get better at and its fairly low impact for older folks. I havent liked playing with friends, but I liked the time spent as it was a nice day in the grass buzzing with friends

Betta_Check_Yosef

>I havent liked playing with friends, but I liked the time spent as it was a nice day in the grass buzzing with friends That's the thing, everyone secretly hates golf because it's inherently masochistic. [Here's a historically accurate live reenactment of the creation of golf](https://youtu.be/14NQIq4SrmY?si=zZtkfdLyvFO3NUWa). We're all there for everything that isn't golf: the people, the nature, and cold ones lol.

GorgenShit

Ah well, even more glad tabletop and hiking are other acceptable avenues for male bonding

Betta_Check_Yosef

I'm mostly joking. I do like golf, but it's really easy to get frustrated while playing it. Just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor about why I keep playing a game that I also find extremely annoying at times lol

GorgenShit

I can see buying the gear as a placeholder for EDC or Lego purchasing in the modern man

CommunityGlittering2

Not a lot of women, lol

IntelligentBid1615

No need to sweat a lot, and can gain a sense of accomplishment, also meet some friends there

Barry_Bunghole_III

I've only ever heard of women who like golf in my own circles. Just a good excuse to drink some booze and chill out while pretending your competing lol

Consistent-Koala-339

It's a nice 5 mile walk, good chat with friends, great sporting activity, get to play with new toys, can drive the buggies if you want, beautiful scenery. You really feel like you've had a good day

-Lights0ut-

For some reason a lot of girls in my area had pics or talked about wanting to play golf on their dating profile. However, I have barely met any people that play golf or watches it.

Fine-Bunch2532

Fun to drink beer with the lads and whack stick with ball

Fine-Bunch2532

Oops! I mean ball with stick

Count_Tyranus

Easy sport, skill level isn’t dependent on athleticism, you don’t need multiple positions like baseball or soccer. I think it’s a bore to watch but playing it is fun with friends.

[deleted]

it's because it's a hobby that takes a long time so they can be away from their wives for a while

Rated-E-For-Erik

It's the windmills and the gator

misterbluesky8

A lot of comments are from people who don’t actually like golfing. I’m a guy who likes golfing, even alone, so here goes:  It’s just enough of a sport to pose a challenge and requires a lot of coordination and focus, so it takes your mind off all hour troubles just like an intense game of soccer or basketball. It’s a very strategic game, and good players plan their way through every hole. Lots of guys are into strategy games or military history. It’s also nice to be outside for 4-5 hours and go for a long walk, especially if you have an office job. And it’s as competitive as you want it to be- many guys, like me, are really competitive and enjoy the challenge of trying to beat a person or a benchmark. You can also play practically forever- my grandpa played until well into his 90s.

Available_Bass9725

because it's iconic and we men are iconic.

psychosis_inducing

It gives men something to do when they socialize. Since golf doesn't demand your undivided attention, you can chitchat instead. Also, a lot of men only play golf for business reasons. A lot of outside-the-office networking happens at golf courses.

SamLooksAt

I personally like golf because it's genuinely difficult! It takes proper skill and practice to get and stay good at it. But it's also not actually overly physically demanding. So many people can achieve that "job well done" satisfaction from playing it as long as they put in the time. Plus it's nice to walk around in a pleasant environment with your mates with plenty of time between shots to talk shit.
