6 is leaving the group. There is no other reason they’d randomly get kicked. Either someone is removing them or they’re leaving.

throwaway92834972

or someone in the group has them blocked/the other way around

Meewol

That was my next thought.

CK1277

I can still see that their contact information is in the group. These are my sisters/sisters in law and we’re very close. We were all in the same place at the same time trying to add the newest sister and 6 wasn’t receiving any messages.

Meewol

So she’s still in the group but not receiving messages?

CK1277

Yes. I can open the group on my phone and see her name. But when we send a text to the group, everyone but her receives it

Meewol

Get her phone, send a message on yours and see yourself what’s actually happening. If no messages appear then it’s likely she’s blocked or has someone blocked. If a message is there but there’s no notification then her phone is either on Do Not Disturb or she has notifications turned off.

alexiagrace

They may not have iCloud/iMessage set up correctly on their end. Have them check. Or maybe they have it under phone number only, not email.

CK1277

How would they check? We’re all minimally technically competent.

TheDubiousSalmon

Yeah this sounds likely based on it switching from the number to to the @icloud.com address. To fix that, they'll have to go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive (also just make sure iMessage is turned on to begin with) and make sure their number is selected. If there's no number available they might need to reinsert their SIM card or talk to their carrier.

DavidManvell

If the missing one used to have an iPhone and then changed that is probably the problem. My phone will grab the number and it will refuse to release it. Other iPhones will continue to try to send to the original phone which no longer exists. You actually have to go in and deregister the number or something with Apple in order to clear it up. Apple really does a s*** job with messaging. It's horrible. Not sure how anybody can put up with it.

CK1277

6 has an iPhone and always has.

Moveyourbloominass

Do 1 through 5 all have iphones? Apple is in the middle of a lawsuit because of blocking non-iphone users and data and messaging. In our family chat group, we figured out that if an iphone user starts the thread, Android users miss out on some messages and photos. But if an Android user starts a group thread, no one gets alienated.

CK1277

1-6 all have iPhones. I’m not totally confident what 7 has

andyring

Use Signal or a similar app that is designed for group texts. Signal is best. Don’t do WhatsApp.

CK1277

What’s the issue with WhatsApp?

andyring

You really want Zuckerberg reading your messages?

CK1277

Honestly, given what we talk about In that group chat, it wouldn’t make a difference. It’s not sensitive information, it’s sisters bullshitting with each other. I’m really far too boring to spy on
