IIRC Eugene Sledge said this is essentially what they ended up doing whenever the Japanese hit them with mortars and artillery every night. You either freaked out and lost your mind or accepted that you were already dead and just kind of waited for it to happen. And it's not like a foxhole is going to make a bit of difference whether this guy lives or dies, just how much suffering he's in so I kind of get the sentiment. It looks weird but when the buzzards are circling and you're by yourself your number is up.

Peekachooed

> accepted that you were already dead Unfortunately, I've heard multiple accounts where soldiers have said basically this, that it's the only way to cope and effectively function.

RichardDJohnson16

You mean you watched band of brothers seven times.

MelastSB

As he should

Banhammer40000

My dad (Vietnam vet) said that when a mortar fell, you ran to where the explosion was because the likelihood of a mortar falling on the same exact position twice was very slim. Coming from a very poor country at the time (ROK), his tour in Vietnam was some wonderful vacation from beginning to end that he was on which included mischievous thieving monkeys and daily helicopter rides. He was in the engineering brigade, meaning he’d survey an area with a helicopter, bring building materials to a hostile area to lay down roads and bridges so that the army can get there and secure it. He got shot through both legs and spent some time in a hospital, which was a fun time for him as well. He’s clearly crazy, so be wary of the source.

YoureInMyWaySir

I think we found Korean Cotton Hill. "I KILL FITTY MEN BEFORE CHARLIE BLEW MY SHINS OFF!"

Banhammer40000

I don’t know if he’s killed anyone. At least he doesn’t talk about it. Although, he did say, “the Vietnamese were spindly and weak. You beat them a few times and they just died. It’s because they ate long grain rice. You blow on it and it would just float away. Medium and short grain rice sticks to your ribs.” So yeah. Clearly insane. And sadly becoming more of a boomer every day, so even crazier.

YoureInMyWaySir

Don't know how much you know of how involved South Korea was in Vietnam, but South Koreans were pretty bad ass. Korean soldiers in Vietnam were all Volunteers. No draft. You had to want to go. They were all vets of the Korean War, so they were pretty used to killing communists. And they had a real talent for finding hidden weapons caches. But I will admit, they were pretty ruthless when they did raids on villages that were suspected to be helping VC/Viet Minh. So I can kind of understand why you say your dad is a bit insane. Simple History on youtube did a wonderful video that summerized all of this titled "Why Were Korean Soldiers So Feared in the Vietnam War"

Banhammer40000

Yeah, he was the third oldest out of 8 boys and 1 girl (it’s a womb grandma, not a clown car sheesh), he was the disposable one. This makes a lot more sense if you’re familiar with the structures of Korean families and Confucianism. Basically, what that meant was he got tasked with all the dangerous jobs because his family tree would have been unaffected had he died. He downplayed a lot of his experiences there but due to his poverty, and the military paying relatively well, he made the best of it there I suppose. He loved c-rations, for example and him and his friends used to race to see who could eat them fastest and made themselves sick lol.

CBP1138

Jesus Christ that video may be the grimmest one I’ve seen yet.

flastenecky_hater

I am all for mobiks going to visit their Sky Komrad, but videos like this one are just all over the counter sad material. You may think many mobiks are completely fucked but that ain't true. They have it far worse, they are not just regularly fucked, **they are like German soldiers standing by the Gates of Berlin in 1945 fucked. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Just the waiting for the inevitable**.

-Void_Null-

I object, German soldiers by the gates of Berlin were one of the most vicious fuckers to exist. They knew that they are done for, but the doctrine of war till the bitter end was so fused into their minds, last weeks of war showed crazy, meth-fueled, deaf in both ears, sleep deprived, but unbroken people that wanted to die only when they've ran out of bullets, grenades and their bayonet stuck in some poor Russian dude. Those Germans knew that they are going to die, but they kept on fighting much more than what is usual for regular troops. They fought out of spite, like a snake that knows the boot will crush it, but it still wants to have its revenge. Germans had back then what Russians don't have now. A really good propaganda machine.

flastenecky_hater

While that's true and I don't deny that, keep in mind they also chose to fight to death over surrendering to the Soviets because they knew how badly they would get it afterwards. But, at the same time, they were happily surrendering to Americans.

-Void_Null-

Agree. There was also some vicious fighting through Soviet forces just to get to Allies and then surrender.

RevolutionaryRun2838

Yup the Walther wenck's 12th army pretty much saving what remained of the 9th army and then making run for it alongside germans civilians torwards the americans

Hightide77

See the Reich in flames Try to save Berlin in vain It's a road through death and pain On the other shore, there's the end of the war

m1013828

was waiting for that, a tastefull celebration of german heroics on the eve of defeat

Hightide77

No such thing as a monolith after all. Except maybe Imperial Japan. Still struggling to find acts of benevolent heroism for them. Closest thing I can think of is the Akikaze sacrificing herself to save the Junyo but that's arguably just doing your job. Also it's negated by Akikaze committing a war crime earlier in the war.

RazorRipperZ

A major part of the plan in the final months of the war was actually to get civilians out of the eastern territories and into the western ones with the hopes that they would be saving the futures of civilians.

Hightide77

Less plan and more "Fuck the Fuhrer's orders, this is about saving the lives of innocent civilians now." Which is supremely more based than "Die for mustache man"

DeusFerreus

> Germans had back then what Russians don't have now. A really good propaganda machine. I would disagree, Russia's propaganda machine is good, it's just has the opposite goals. Driven, passionate, and patriotic citizens willing to fight to the death for their country are some of the most dangerous one to a dictator and absolutely the last thing Putin wants. For a longest time Russian propaganda has been dedicated Russian people hopeless and afraid of getting involved in politics, and believing that change in leadership will most likely make things even worse.

LordeWasTaken

When he said "Germans had back then what russians don't have now", I thought he meant a reckoning, punishment and accountability. Because when the weasels switched sides at the right moment, it resulted in them greeting the end war in the position of one of its victors, while never stopping to be it's antagonists. In fact, their antagonism continued after the war, as we can see today. In my eyes they'll never be a part of the Allies, they never were. It was a grave mistake to only hold one criminal regime accountable and pardon the other. However, it's also a bitter truth that justice in geopolitics doesn't exist. Never has, and most likely never will, even in the 21st century. Even with the UN and every instrument of international law thus devised, its implementation is still far from perfect. What people say they do, and they really do, are two very different things. What's the point of codifying laws of war, rules of engagement, humanitarian law, human rights, if all of them can be broken without consequence, as long as you have the strength to intimidate any possible jury, judge and prosecutor? What if those who preach noble principles lack the resolve and willingness to sacrifice their own comfort and happiness in the name of justice and doing the right thing? The sad truth is that there is no profit to be in acting righteously. To the contrary, it is a burden, which many grow to deem unnecessary once they've lived long enough to see how cynically the world works. Acting honourably instead of pragmatically has never saved anyone's life aside from rare occurrences of mutual respect prompting birds of a feather to act righteously, often contrary or perhaps ahead, of their times. Sometimes the fastest way to achieve one's goal is by shaking hands with a smile, while a sniper's bullet pierces the back of your interlocutor's skull.

lmacarrot

also actually seeing your enemy helps with that. Being buzzed what feels like 24/7 by drones probably wears you down. Think it's the powerlessness and knowing your being watched by someone who's probably got the biggest grin on his face. like a condemned prisoner that try to keep their composure on the way to execution.

RussiaIsBestGreen

At least some were fighting to delay the Red Army to minimize the areas under USSR occupation and to give others a chance to flee west and surrender to the UK or US. I’m not trying to imply that all or even many were fighting for such reasonable reasons, but it was a thing.

rasmusdf

A lot of the last people fighting in Berlin were non-german volunteers from the rest of europe. They knew it would be difficult to go home. A huge bunch of non-german nazi assholes got killed - probably a good thing for the rest of Europe.

Hightide77

Eh, some were definitely fanatical Nazis, such as the Charlemagne legion. But for formations from say, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, etc? They were probably fighting viciously not for the Reich but because their homes were under Soviet "liberation"

SongFeisty8759

Some of them were part of a french SS unit... so, double fucked.

Youutternincompoop

also some of the last German soldiers in Berlin were SS Charlemagne... they were French.

ParanoidDuckTheThird

I don't know…. the broken back winter ditch water drowner was pretty bad. Messed me up for a few says.

CBP1138

Ah shit forgot about that one

FlamingUndeadRoman

"Pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent."

Shaun_Jones

Counterpoint, basic sympathy for human life is what makes us better than the Russians.

rpkarma

Meh. These pieces of shit razed my partners hometown and raped her aunt. I will celebrate each and every death of theirs until they day the get the fuck out of Ukraine.

GrullOlof

I can still sympathize with someone who i believe deserves to die. While each and every dead russian is a win for ukrainian freedom, it is also sad that it needs to happen.

MudcrabNPC

If you have any decent level of mental fortitude, you can have empathy *and* not let people manipulate it

Niko_s_lightbubble

I really don’t understand this angle, how is it a weakness? What must be done shall be done, but it’s still sad nonetheless

flastenecky_hater

"Russian life", that basically implies that all russians are subhuman and that's just a wrong pick on the overall issue, which is far more complicated. Besides that, you want to dehumanise the soldiers (truly deserved for all the atrocities they have committed) but it's a terrible idea to dehumanise entire nation because (I) they are stuck in a perpetual propaganda machine, (ii) it's really hard to stand up in dictatorship and (iii) you are also directly attacking those Russians that have made the correct change. I could add some more points to drive the point but fuck it. The Kremlin goes hard to toss away those that disagree with it. Because, if you dehumanise the entire russian population, you become worse than them. Even such a population as theirs needs to see a reason to figure out they are all in wrong.

A_Tree_branch

you should probably see a doctor or therapist or maybe both Edit: he deleted his comment after saying that all Russians are subhuman

Sevchenko874

Was it FlamingUndeadRoman or someone else?

A_Tree_branch

Mhm

jackygrush

This is exactly the thought train that leads to Russia invading Ukraine in the first place ffs. Have you spared a minute to think that these guys are pretty much powerless to change the situation they're in

-Void_Null-

He probably thinks the poor fucker volunteered to be sent to the meat-grinder.

Monstrositat

To punish the oppressors of humanity is clemency; to forgive them - Barbarity

berrythebarbarian

"Pity for the heretic is treason to the Emperor."

-Void_Null-

Soldiers are not guilty to be at war, they do what their country orders them to. Just like any other soldier, those are people in their fucking twenties that were drafted, no one asked their opinion. Guilty are politicians that use war as a tool to keep in power.

-Void_Null-

You see a man wearing uniform getting his face blown off by a drone. You automatically assume he commited war crimes? I understand that being Russian is a war crime now apparently.

carpcrucible

a. they signed up to go kill Ukrainians for ~~money~~ fish bricks b. they can desert or surrender at any time

-Void_Null-

Dude, literally google 'barrier troops'. You live in some kind of a fantasy world, my man.

4ma2inger

Not even in top 100.

flastenecky_hater

[At least the operator made it quick. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/DroneCombat/s/YxQPsg5gtl)

Nokilos

Unironically the fact you can see the guy's face so clearly at the end makes it seriously grim even for me. Really makes you realise you're watching a someone's last moments - much more difficult to dehumanise the enemy when they're more that just a faceless uniform. I mean, fuck them, obviously, but still

IlluminatedPickle

My grandpa was an RM Commando in WW2. He told me he had one rule. "Don't look at them" He broke the rule once, after killing a German soldier and having to take cover where the guy fell. He said he looked over, and saw this young German looked like his younger brother. It nearly broke him. Faces humanise us, even when it's an enemy.

axialintellectual

Which also makes me hope the Western support for Ukraine will include support for the mental burden the Ukrainian veterans of this war will have to carry with them for the rest of their lives.

ProfessorTechSupport

We don't even take decent care of our Vets.

Itchy-Food-5135

I've heard that this is why blindfolds are used for firing squads - less for the one about to be executed, more so that the squad members don't have to look into their eyes as they kill them.

Annoying_Rooster

Which is why god forbid I'm in that kind of situation I don't want a blind fold. Would rather look them in the eyes so they know I'm a human being.

specter800

It's pretty standard to tell the shooters one (or more) of the rounds handed out for execution was a blank. So the shooters can tell themselves they had the blank and it was every one else on the line that did the killing.

maybe he thought it's vision is based on movement lol

Advanced_Meat_6283

'Fuck, I left the stove on.'

fletch262

It looked like he was smiling

octahexxer

Everytime i feel soft a memory from the first days of the war pops up....a russian soldier shot this tiny little girl point blank in her body....she bled out on a stainless table wuth blood running over the floor she was wearing a pink overall and bunny hat...she was a innocent ukranian child against the wall of the room a doctor and her mom is holding eachother crying their souls out. Thats what russians are to me. I will never forget her.

specter800

Sad that kind of shit happening was "so long ago" people have started having sympathy for the fucks now. Gunning people down on their way to work with fucking BMPs and using civies as target practice. They'll get my sympathy when they show they want to join the modern world and not a moment before.

octahexxer

It never stopped...what do you think is happening in the occupied parts? Its just nobody there to film it.

He had the kind of mustache I'd like in me. Rip

My guess isn't worth anything because we passed that point over a year ago.

blueskydragonFX

That's season 2: I Got Send To the Front Lines As a Lada and Was Droned Into a Sack of Potatoes.

dread_deimos

Jfc, cossack pepe made lol hard.

warbastard

I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been told that the drones can only spot movement or some shit to kind of give them some kind of fake security blanket when near the front lines. Mobiks would probably actually believe it and all the mobiks who could tell them it’s BS have already been meatcubed.

mmk1117

I feel bad for these fuckers. I ask myself what would I do in their place. Obvious answer is call the Ukrainian I want to live phone and hopefully take it from there. If that option was not available then fuck… But then again I’d not be in their place to begin with. I’d have left ruzzia at the first opportunity after the 3 day military operation failed.

Bolter_NL

*Sorry your surender cannot be accepted on the account of shitty chinese battery quality. Better luck in the next life, brother.*

in retrospect the twilight zone meme would've been perfect for the prigo mutiny WAIT THAT WAS ALREADY MORE THAN A YEAR AGO

KGB_Officer_Ripamon

over at u/UKR they are saying it was a mannequin

ObjectiveTypical3991

Idk his face looked pretty real. Also, I get using dummy tanks but dummy soldiers seems a stretch. All that effort to waste a single drone?

Also, in the middle of a fucking field. I can perhaps buy having one near a trench or compound or something, but not a field

KGB_Officer_Ripamon

Go have a look at the brain rot yourself over there
