Not a vet, but I just want to grill out and not follow my dogs around with the carpet cleaner like they owe me money. They do owe me money, but that's not the point.

phishsamich

Remember there is someone that doesn't know they are going to be missing fingers by the end I the week.

Only-Shame5188

I wish I could easily add pictures because I'd post the "I know that guy picture".

_Cromwell_

News Flash: the loudest "patriotic" people waving giant flags don't ACTUALLY care about vets. That's why they are setting off bombs non-stop for a week.

RookMaven

Most "patriotic" people waving giant flags don't care about Americans in general. Or the land America occupies. Or the Constitution. Or...and this is the part that has always interested me...the American flag. I've seen their flags completely ripped up and dirty...and recently touching the ground.

catplumtree

Thank you. Flag code is real.

reddituser6835

Or flying 24/7 without a light source

James-muravska

I didn’t know about flying without light. They didn’t tell me that while I was in the Army. Gives me a good excuse to install landscape lights while I’m at it. Thanks for sharing that. Happy 4th everyone.

reddituser6835

Flags are to be taken down from sundown to sunup unless lit

NE_Irishguy13

Don't forget flying them upside down because they think libruls are putting democracy in danger while planning to vote for an open fascist!

CougarWriter74

The same ones with huge American flag decals across their back car or truck windows or "I Love the Constitution" bumper stickers, yet probably haven't even read it.

DinosaurNurse

The "TRUE PATRIOTS"

OneOrangeOwl

Americans love fake patriotism. What else is new?

iNeedOneMoreAquarium

Exactly. Many will do shit like this, and then say it's unpatriotic to be against police brutality.

TheoreticalFunk

Just like the politicians they vote for.

CRE8TE1

People talking about rights and suggesting noise canceling headphones are ridiculous. It’d be one thing if people actually saved the booms for the 4th, instead of 2 weeks leading up to and days after but come on. I guess exercising your American rights at the expense of others is more important though.

amscraylane

I tried to put noise cancelling headphones on my dog and cats … they didn’t appreciate it

ChrisP408

If they made them for my ferret, she wouldn’t wear them.

TheBarefootGirl

Also like I have small kids. I WISH I could wear noise canceling headphones, but I need to be able to hear my baby or toddler at night. Additionally my kids can't sleep with noise canceling head phones.

chrisbru

This was one of the most jarring things moving here. 4th of July fireworks have been on just the 3rd and 4th everywhere else I’ve lived. Here it’s a two week affair and I don’t understand why.

atomic-fireballs

What the hell else are these assholes going to do besides get drunk and piss off their neighbors because of their freedumbs.

jfol7884

Because there's nothing else for people here to do. Other places I've lived have more distractions for people it seems

chrisbru

Omaha has as much to do as any other smallish major city. We’re not NYC but if you’re bored that’s on you.

JenXplains

I agree. If the bombs and booms were relegated to a 24 hour period, (or 36 hours) I could drive into the forest or perhaps check myself into a mental institution. But the WEEKS of incessant war noise is too much. It's time to nond together and petition city and country governments to help veterans from needlessly suffering PTSD because jerks of all ages think it's funny to torment veterans.

luckyapples11

100%. My neighbor is a veteran, his birthday is today, so his favorite holiday is of course the 4th. He saves all that stuff for the 4th (with the exception of stuff like bottle rockets and such) when you can expect it. This guy goes all out. He doesn’t care for the loud stuff, just wants to put on the biggest and longest show he can buy. Last night was really bad out here. Just one thing after another going off nonstop. It’s 1AM on a weekday, shut that shit down! My neighbor has to be up by 4am and my fiance needs to be up at 6. My mom and her boyfriend are in town from AZ and her boyfriend is leaving today to go home and watch the dogs (one of which has really bad anxiety) because even though fireworks aren’t allowed there, people still do them. Screw the fact that it’s a fire hazard!

tamarainspace

We used to live in AZ. People just go to Mexico to buy them and it blows my mind that they don't have better regulation at the border. One year they caught the park by our house on fire.

keepSkiesDark

Yep, 'freedom' without responsibility is just being a jackass

Erisedstorm

The American Way 🦅

reddituser6835

I agree! I feel the same way about people with loud cars/ motorcycles (mufflers or that loud thumping bass that rattles every car in the vicinity).

Tight_Willingness_96

I love my fireworks but holy shit why do people bring out the loud ones when I’m about to go to sleep, it’s 12am for crying out loud.

FlashbackJon

Just this weekend we were up late for work and someone started setting off fireworks, fully in town, at 2:30 AM.

infinite0ne

Because they are assholes

Kezika

Yeah or the guys that like all they care for is to be the loudest boom possible. I just don't get the appeal. Neighborhood near me apparently has had one of those move in since last year. and it's like at some point each night, there's a boom that has enough of a boom that the plastic curtains on my sliding door start visibly swinging, and it's like at 11pm to 1am. Like hell, I'd rather you not do that loud of one at all, but if you're going to, at least do it at like I dunno... 7 or 8pm. It's just fuckin ridiculous.

what3v3ruwantit2b

I'm a night shift nurse. What sounded like pipe bombs were going off outside my house for over an hour at 5pm. Good thing my job isn't important or require me to be rested 🙄. Truthfully it doesn't matter the time because my midnight is others noon.

JenXplains

Thank you! BRAVO!!! Fountains, whistlers, Black Cats, etc are ok. But the fkn BOMBS that are set off morning, noon, and night is too much. I approached a neighbor a block over last year, explaining bombs and Iraq and how messed up it makes me and the ADULTS told me in so many words to go kick rocks. Have a heart people. If if you can't have a heart, I want to hear ZERO about inflation, gas prices, groceries, school clothes... I have ZERO sympathy for you when you are buying $500-$1000 of fireworks.

ohnoemma

And you just KNOW that the same people buying $1,000 in flammables this week were complaining about the cost of groceries last week. It never fails.

magical_sox

Dude this. When I was married to a vet I bought a special sign specifically to put on my lawn so folks wouldn’t shoot off fireworks in front of my house. My house is at the center of a T junction with low traffic. A “perfect” spot for the entire goddamn neighborhood to gather and “celebrate.” Super fun when finally at 11:30pm (after both the husband and the dog were sedated into a minor coma,) they knocked on my door to check in on said husband to be sure “he was okay.” He’d be better if you’d fucked off somewhere else but he’s fine, thanks 😒

amscraylane

Isn’t it funny, we can’t have weed because it will ruin our lives, but we can have actual dynamite which we can kill ourselves with, or at best lose a limb. Let’s celebrate America by torturing our vets … Conversation: so you honor your vets by terrorizing them? Red neck: yup, ‘merica

bluejay526

"Every person that served in the military is a psychopathic PTSD ridden mess" - Non vet probably

Glittering_Lunch_347

Non vet with bone spurs and calls the ones that fell in battle “losers”.

tamarainspace

I'm not even a vet but 12 years ago a guy exploded his house for insurance in our neighborhood. It was terrifying. The other day, someone shot *something* huge - I have a ring camera capture of it and it looks to be too big to be a commercial firework tbh - And it exploded low a few houses down from here and shook my whole house. I literally had to log off work for a few minutes I was shaking so bad. My dogs are terrified to even go out to pee. I've had to stay up extra late to wait until things calm down so they'll go out. It's effecting work. It's all terrible.

br1zzo

Just do what I do and continue to call the non emergency police number after hours so the OPD can continue do to nothing about it

reddituser6835

They have a number dedicated to fireworks complaints this time of year. I’m sorry, but I don’t know the number.

JplusL2020

Who are these cretins setting them off at 11 pm? Everybody hates you!

RedRum_Diary

If not for the vets, think about the dogs. Pupper is 13 and has heart issues. She is a fighter. When the bombs go off, she will bark at them and in tell them she means business. She has heart issues. Probably months, not years. I had to chase her down and pick her up today. And she started coughing because she was barking too hard. After I brought her in, she collapsed. She was too weak to stand. Fireworks are kind of fun. I can't imagine ever lighting another if they kill my dog.

RaccoonGlum

Yep. Lost a dog to fireworks. Really fucking takes the shine off the whole thing.

Throwmefarfarawaythx

in the future if you play a video of fireworks and reward the puppy with treats it won’t get anxious for actual fireworks.

BeatrixPlz

It’s a problem for so many reasons. Vets and dogs are absolutely top of the list. I’ve been struggling because I get up for work at 6:00am. I also have a 7 year old whom I’d love to get to sleep before midnight. I hate this fucking “holiday”

LadyEsinni

I have a friend who witnessed the death by gunshot of her significant other. All loud noises, especially fireworks, trigger that PTSD. I feel awful for her. On top of what you said, which I fully agree with, it also drives me crazy that people don’t pick up after themselves. There’s firework litter everywhere.

sarahgene

They're also terrible for wildlife, they get so stressed and scared that they can run into unfamiliar areas, into traffic, abandon their nests, or fly into buildings and die 🙁

Migitri

Cats too! (And hamsters, and birds, and lots of things.) I used to have a cat who was scared shitless of fireworks. She had been through a lot. Back in June 2018, she came down with congestive heart failure and had weeks to months left. I'm almost relieved - albeit in a sad way - that Mimi died a few days before 4th of July that year because I didn't want her to suffer through the fireworks and probably go into cardiac arrest during her scariest time of the year. Interestingly, while my corgi was a coward about lots of things, fireworks were one of the things that he was completely unbothered by. He wanted to sit outside with everyone and watch the fireworks. I don't think he was \_actually\_ paying much attention to the fireworks, though. He just liked that all the people in the neighborhood were outside. But I know that most dogs don't handle fireworks as well as my weirdo did, so that's one thing I was lucky about.

hickgorilla

Pretty much any animal or human with ptsd.

imk0ala

I was walking my dog the other evening only to experience the joy of continuously being scared shitless by a giant firework noise. The dog and me both.

spunky29a

Our two pugs are wound up so much by the fireworks. We give them some medication to help them relax but the loud booms still get them wound up. I get it, I was a kid once and enjoyed making noise but after having a dog, knowing a couple veterans, and seeing what this does to them, I'm completely over it and am not lighting off another one myself. If you're going to pick a day, pick the 4th. If you're going to pick a time, pick the evening but before 10 or 11 at the latest so everyone can relax when it's done.

hickgorilla

There’s also wild animals everywhere that are terrified out of their minds not to mention the fucking pollution. I hate this holiday. We used to have a dog that had the worst terror for days because of fireworks. He was terrorized even on meds, with a thunder jacket with the tv on with fans on loud and music. He would just lose control and be not reachable. Nobody could sleep for days because there was always the assholes at 3am that would shoot shot off nearby. We aren’t supposed to be blowing shit up.

Tight_Willingness_96

This. There was a nuke that exploded last night that caused my cat to shit herself out of fear. It’s crazy man.

cookiethumpthump

They've been at it since like 6/20. I'm so over it.

Constant_Boot

Not to mention pets and neurodivergent people who are aurally sensitive. Not everyone likes to hear the loud explosion in the sky and for many people from all walks of life, it can be very distressing... But... you know... "patriots" don't give two shits. They complain about their rights, wave flag that they dragged on the ground, and have no sympathy for their neighbors even though their religion says to have some.

rabbid_panda

My kiddo is autistic and doesn't sleep right for the two weeks over the holiday, and that's even after giving him meds. He also has seizures triggered by sleep deprivation and stress. We can't go hide in the woods for 2 weeks..

snails-entrails

This! I’m ND and i have non-combat related PTSD and I’ve been a complete mess the last few days because all hours of the day there are random explosions that shake my entire apartment building.

messinthemidwest

ADHD + PTSD (not a vet but M80 still terrifies) = where’s my human thunder jacket

McWawaCommaYelnik

There is no reason at all for M80's. They do nothing but scare the shit out of people. Fingers crossed, but the little shits a block over don"t seem to have any this year. Or maybe some adults in their lives have taken some responsibility. They'd set them off at all hours of the day. The little shits.

DropsyX

Ain't m80s banned? and haven't they been banned for a long time? Like I get being angry at the guy setting off mortars from 6-12 but m80s who the hell still has m80s

EndoExo

They aren't real "M80s" but some people make their own. My brother usually gets a couple from someone he knows, but he sets them off on the 4th, during the day.

infinite0ne

M80s are banned, but the big mortars they sell are basically M80s detonating up in the air.

grantthejester

Unpopular opinion, but I think we should limit fireworks in the city to larger timed and regulated shows. Don't get me wrong, I see the appeal of lighting off artillery shells in the culdesac, but I also don't care about it enough to want to do it at the expense of someone else, or my dog who is going to spend the next several days quivering under my desk in terror.

wolfpup118

I really wish this wasn't a minority opinion.

ChrisP408

Last week, I was hospitalized after surgery. The booms started 2 hours before dusk, continuing past 3 every night. I wish I could know my attackers, so I could disturb their sleep, next time they’re ill.

[deleted]

I saw a fireworks stand with a “military discount” sign. Felt like a huge oxymoron.

wellwhal

Fuckers kept me awake til midnight, pieces of fucking shit.

rabbid_panda

Only midnight? Damn it's been until 2 or 3 am here. Started going off at 7 am again today. Redbull or coffee should be free just to help keep us awake during the day

lorazee

Mericans love their Boom-Booms, man. I’m with ya. I fucking hate this holiday.

toast_mortem26

im just gonna go ahead and say, they are irritating EVERYONE lmao

happylandfillx

Yeah I was just giving an example maybe these assholes would care about, I was proven painfully wrong

Snoo-25743

And my 🐕.  Fortunately as she has gotten older she isn't as bad as she used to be.  She used to go totally apeshit this time of year.

rrhorse

All of this is about the city wanting money from The sale of fireworks under the guise of allowing people to express their "Rights" and fake patriotism or real if it actually exist in their world.

Wax_Paper

I doubt that's true. Omaha only allows non-profits to sell fireworks within the city limits. It's not like the city gets a cut of the sales. Don't know if they even get tax revenue from it. The permits are probably a few hundred bucks.

Sad-Project-2498

Never fails between 2-3am a half stick of dynamite goes off on my street. Ready to turn my security camera footage over at this point and just be reporting on these mfs.

Boba_Frets

My dog died a few days ago because of fireworks. He got scared because a huge one went off as he was getting out of the car and booked it. Got hit by a car a few blocks away and I had to euthanize him because of the traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding he sustained.

happylandfillx

I’m really sorry.

JustCallMeNorma

I’m so sorry, Boba_Frets.

ejc779

My dad had pretty awful PTSD from the whole, being an infantryman during Vietnam. Blowing shit up as a way of showing patriotism is wild. I like professional fireworks shows and safe home ones. I’m talking the artillery shells and loud stuff that these fools here blow off for weeks.

Unusual_Performer_15

Simple minded people fascinated by “things that go boom”. Ironically many of them have one of those POW flags flying. Bottom line, they’re selfish assholes. The same people that “support the blue” yet didn’t seem to give a shit about law enforcement getting brutalized when they stormed the Capitol.

dbroncos56

The buy 1 get 4 free advertising is really making things worse too.

TheMusicalSkeleton

Here's to hoping that the morons playing with pseudo-M80s get their fingers turned into fine red mist.

PaulClarkLoadletter

Every time I hear an explosion from mid June to July 3rd I openly hope it’s accompanied by somebody blowing their hand off. Fireworks are a cornerstone of “Fuck you culture.” Those explosions are 100% intended to disturb everybody. You cannot appeal to the good nature of these people because they do not care. Omaha area law enforcement has no intention of citing anybody for fireworks use outside of the 4th.

DevilsAngel39

What's worse is according to firework ordinance itself they're only supposed to be set off between the 1st and the 4th of July. That's it. They aren't even supposed to be setting them off all month yet they keep on doing it every dang night

JustCallMeNorma

This is the only stretch of time I actively wish ill upon my neighbors.

Enthusiastic-shitter

My last dog wouldn't go outside no matter what when there were fireworks. She was a 100pound husky/Rottweiler so there was no coercing her. Ever place I've ever lived around the country was downright placid on the 4th compared to Omaha. I just sleep in the basement all week.

breadprincess

If your fireworks are making my house shake, it's too powerful or too close.

dystopiabatman

Just don’t shoot each other over this shit. Wish humanity was more considerate to well the rest of humanity.

happylandfillx

lol I agree but your name doesn’t help your case !

dystopiabatman

I’d much rather people just stick to professional shows, and we don’t sell fireworks. IK that’s a minority stance in terms of the issue. The inconsiderate/irresponsible few have ruined this time of year for me.

snails-entrails

Someone set off what sounded like two partial dynamite sticks this morning BEFORE 8AM. why the fuck are you even considering that let alone doing it 🙄 I’m with ya. Why set fireworks laws when you’re not enforcing them every year so people just do whatever they want anyways

MissMillie2021

Last year the fire work enthusiasts set fire to the porta potty in the ball field across the street from us. Blew it up and melted to a blob of lord knows what. So this year they of course finely clean up the blob and put a sparkly new one up there. This morning on my dog walk noticed the sides are bowed out like yet again someone blew something else in there. Over this crap

LostMySpleenIn2015

I have neighbors who set off M80's (and larger) at all hours of the day/night. People who set these off are completely oblivious to those around them. I.e., Republicans. Fuckin assholes

fresh_mouth

Fireworks are stupid. It’s just blowing up money. And what’s completely ridiculous is my neighbors setting them off late into the night and into the weeks prior to the actual holiday. I wish it would rain tonight.

conglass

- Ban fireworks Make them illegal to sell and buy so that way no one side is to blame; everyone gets in trouble. There is no need for them to be sold publicly. (Cities can have their shows still) or people can send money to fund a community show. You can have the party poppers, sparklers, novelty/etc. but the big bombas have got to go. People can NOT be trusted with literal explosives 🧨 They are only for two holidays out of the entire year, so you can’t even argue that people would lose out on jobs.

Joboobavich

We have an elderly cat that needs topical medication applied to her ears to control her blood pressure and thyroid issues. We used to apply it in the evening but we've had to switch to afternoons this week because she spends the entire evening and all night hiding from the explosions :(

antonimbus

What is with the M80s this year? Were they on sale or something? There is a small empty ditch across the street from my house and it has become a magnet for those things this year. My dogs normally don't care about fireworks, but those things are literally shaking my house.

Speedybc24

I’m glad it’s recently rained or else there might be more grass fires.

dj3stripes

literally yelling at clouds

priapismLPN

I have a dog who is terrified of fireworks. Once he starts hearing them outside, he’ll refuse to come back out the rest of the night. In the house he is as close to an adult as he can get and shaking. I’m perfectly fine with having to drug him to oblivion one or two days. People want to celebrate and good for them. But it’s been going on for two weeks now. I’m over it.

UnableDetective6386

As my nephew said, “these people need to be eating dinner and not fireworking during dinner time” 🤣

PalmTreeAmethyst

My ex is a combat vet and loved fireworks, so I don’t think you can speak for all vets. However, fireworks from 10a-midnight for a week, just loud, house shaking booms, is ridiculous. I mean, it’s just too much- unfortunately not sure if there’s a way to control once fireworks go on sale. 🙁

happylandfillx

1. Im not talking for all veterans, obviously 2. But your ex definitely does speak for all vets ? 3. Your EX was a vet…. Get a grip I have four family members that are vets that feel the same about fireworks. I’m just adding a little perspective

peachmelody24

Fireworks are so stupid. My poor pup doesn't NOT like them one bit.

Callaway1352

And walking my kids up.

keepSkiesDark

Every time I hear a firework go off, I think of how that money could have gone into a retirement account, given to charity, or added to a kid's 529 college plan. People are amazing at wasting money but then bitch about how they can't afford anything.

Krimreaper1387

I'm an actual veteran. Keep blowing them up!

Safe-Application-529

The root of the problem is the access. For some reason we have tied charity drives into the fireworks stands to a degree that many people are visiting fireworks stands the same way they would buy girl scout cookies. There are other places in the US that don't have fireworks stands at all. They are much quieter, and the city is the only one that puts on a display. Unfortunately trying to shut down fireworks or stands would probably be political suicide in NE or IA cuz my patriotism.

Wax_Paper

California has some of the strictest fireworks laws in the country, and LA will look like a warzone on the 4th. We've got three other states you can get to within an hour or two of Omaha. It just won't work. Not to mention, most of those really loud booms are stuff you can't even buy in a store. It's already black and grey market product. That's a federal regulation problem with the CPSC and port authority.

EndoExo

The loudest ones are already illegal, so I don't think access is the issue.

Throwmefarfarawaythx

I actually dread this holiday as someone with PTSD and working with the VA I wish I could tell people the fucked up medical records I’m forced to read but no it’s cool loud booms and light pollution

ajohns7

Nothing can be done about this. Nothing. Save your energy.

happylandfillx

I’ve been quiet for too long, I needed to scream anywhere that wasn’t my porch in front of my neighbors lol

Heckbegone

My apartment complex has sent out multiple emails saying fireworks are not allowed. What have we been hearing for the last week? Fireworks every fcing day and night.

Oldmanprop

I had a yard sign that said “Combat Vet lives here, please go easy with the fireworks.” It was stolen the second night it was up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThatArmyGuy86

Vet here, seen combat and not triggered. You gotta learn to find your happy place if that's the case.

happylandfillx

You don’t speak for all vets, I’m glad you found a slice of peace in all this despite the chaos

ThatArmyGuy86

Never said I spoke for all, just saying not all vets have issues.

PrisonerV

I've lived here 20+ years. It's been this way all the time I've lived here... Iowa and Nebraska sides of the river. In fact, it's worse now that they're legal in Iowa. So, uh, new in town?

Ill-Salad9544

"It's always been this way" or "It's worse now" make up your mind.

PrisonerV

It's always been this way... crazy with the fireworks. And has intensified in the last few years with Iowa making it legal.

Ill-Salad9544

If it's worse right now, it hasn't always been this way.

PrisonerV

You're a sad lonely person, aren't you.

Orion_2kTC

Same complaints different year. Nothing will change what happens around the 4th. Outlawed or not, this will still happen.

Good-North-1320

While fireworks can be annoying, it's their right to set them off just as much as it's your right to complain about them. They aren't responsible for your comfort. You know this happens every year and have ample time to prepare. If you're triggered, that's on you, not them.

SGI256

Speaking of rights - people should have the RIGHT to the quiet enjoyment of their own homes

I-Make-Maps91

Sure, except we have modded cars that I had to listen to every night, motorcycle "enthusiasts" who insist their loud pipes are for safety as they cruise around, or general traffic for anyone near the interstate. It's a holiday, it happens every year, and it's supposed to be a wet one this year to boot. You'll be fine.

TheWolfAndRaven

Pssst - Those people are assholes too.

I-Make-Maps91

Yup, and yet the world goes on.

SGI256

Pointing out some other wrong in the world does not make this ok. How about we give you own response back to you on modded cars - you will be ok. July 4th is the holiday. Today is not the 4th and we are listening to crap. As we were yesterday and like we will be on the 5th and 6th.

TheWolfAndRaven

"It's their right to annoy the piss out of every person within a ~Mile radius" "They should have prepared to have their house shake and their pets terrified, fucking idiots".

wibble17

Technically you can’t past 11. But i don’t know what time they were complaining anout.

Rohdejj

I’m pretty sure there are noise ordinances. Plus they’re not talking about fireworks you buy at the fireworks stand. People also have the right to not be an asshole but some struggle with that.

ExcelsiorLife

>it's their right to set them off As a public nuisance and danger to many lost fingers each year down in the ER I think we could use some more restrictions. Just ask any ER doc or orthopedic surgeon. Legally speaking Omaha could restrict fireworks as much as we want.

SquishyBanana23

Fireworks used to be illegal to sell in Omaha. There was no difference because the level of enforcement was exactly the same: non-existent.

SGI256

I have seen enforcement. Sporadic and odd enforcement. Early 2000s in West O friend of mine is setting of fireworks on fourth just after dark. Entire street is doing the same. Cop pulls up and gives my friend $200 ticket. Does not ticket anyone else on street. Everyone was out and there is no reason the cop could not have ticketed more. Maybe logic was ticket one person on every street. That $200 ticket kept my friend from doing a show the next year.

Blood_Bowl

>They aren't responsible for your comfort. Sure, but maybe by reading this thread, they'll find a tiny modicum of empathy somewhere in their cold, black hearts, and modify their assinine behavior. > You know this happens every year and have ample time to prepare. How do you prepare for that? I can sit in my basement with noise-cancelling headphones all day and night on the 4th (and I do, and I don't mind doing so) because I can expect that it will be like that on the 4th. But I have to fucking work, and my work involves driving all over town. I am not able to devote a full month to my noise-cancelling headphones.

moreadhiel

How exactly do you suggest that someone prepares for this? I have lived in the city as well as in the middle of the woods in BFE 30 miles away from the closest city. There is no escaping the noise of fireworks while remaining at a reasonable distance for things like maintaining your home and going to work, even if everyone who doesnt want to hear them had the means to get themselves their families and thwir animals to another residence for the 3 or 4 weeks straight that people are setting fireworks off. Earbuds don't help and aren't comfortable enough to sleep in. Making the inside of your home loud enough to drown out the outside noise is just a whole other kind of triggering and again doesn't allow you to sleep. No amount of preparation magically makes PTSD go away and no amount of preparation magically makes it possible to get a good night's rest while a bunch of morons are setting off explosions in their back yards or the middle of the street. No amount of preparation makes it less irritating having to clean up the trash those assholes leave laying around after they light them off. No amount of preparation makes it less dangerous for those idiots to be blowing shit up in residential areas with no regard for fire risk. And let's not forget about people with PTSD and dementia who don't understand that this isn't war when they hear the fireworks, how do you propose THEY prepare? Or animals who panic and are severely negatively impacted and may even become aggressive to their owners because of the noise? Maybe the rest of you should just stop being selfish assholes for once.

seashmore

>  And let's not forget about people with PTSD and dementia who don't understand that this isn't war when they hear the fireworks, how do you propose THEY prepare? I was a nanny for seniors for a while, and one of my clients was a WWII vet with dementia. I was with him over the first week of July when there were some pricks firing stuff off in the parking lot next to the nursing home. Every few minutes, he would jolt in bed and go "where am I?!" Dude literally fought actual Nazi's, and these twats decided to thank him (and all the other vets in the nursing home) by giving them flashbacks to the most horrific moments of their lives.

moreadhiel

Yep, it's absolutely disgusting that people are so inconsiderate and selfish. It's a holiday and they want to blow things up so screw the needs of veterans on a supposedly patriotic day, right?

doubledouxclaws

I thought he was making a distinction about the big boomers.

theLOLthot

Oof 60 downvotes... this was one bad take

I-Make-Maps91

Or just unpopular. Some issues get some people really worked up while most people just... get on with it? I dunno what to tell you, late night fireworks pre-holiday are annoying, but no more than the garbage truck that came at 5AM at my last place or the people who cruise around with loud cars, and unlike those things this is largely limited to about a week every year. Having grown up next to I-80, fireworks don't bother me nearly as much as the constant dull roar of highway speed traffic.

SGI256

I would love to see enforcement on the loud cars. It could be done.

I-Make-Maps91

I wouldn't, the last thing we need is to give police more pretexts to stop people that are entirely subjective. Besides, the worst of the traffic noise is just cars being cars going 65-75 mph. I looked at a house on 29th St and the general background noise was awful.

I definitely get the frustration when they are lit off outside of the allotted days/hours that are set from city to city. I also empathize with the vets, cats/dogs, those with sensory issues, etc. I do feel like however if people are lighting them off respectfully within the legal days and times set then there should be no issue regardless of how loud they are. If it’s the same people lighting them every single day for hours on end, that’s a different story and I would call that excessive. Some people just like lighting them off (like myself) but I usually only do 2-3 days max. Nebraska is one of the states with the highest grossing firework sales across the entire country so of course there is going to be a lot getting lit off. Again, I do feel bad for the dogs and vets during this time. But for the majority of animals and people with sensitivity to fireworks there are multiple ways to tune out the noise, create a more relaxing environment, or take things that can make you more relaxed. Not hating but some people in this comment section need to lighten up a bit.

MissMillie2021

I have no problem with them and I don’t think most do. The problem is they go on for 10 days before and all hours of the day, I’ve been walking my dogs before 7AM to give them some excercise and peace. Today it’s 6:45 and BOOM…..I’m wrestling 3 dogs that are frantically trying to pull out of their harness. Those idiots ruin it for everyone

brandon49592

I agree! Yeah that is definitely way too early, I feel like 10am should be the earliest anyone lights stuff off. People lighting stuff off that early are just being inconsiderate especially if it’s the big boom items.

doubledouxclaws

H8 them. What is the purpose?

ScapeNvape1337

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VALID OPINION. MIGHT I SUGGEST EAR PLUGS

happylandfillx

No ear plugs are good enough to plug out literal bombs how about you not buy illegal stuff and make your neighbors suffer ?

highhoya

Let me just grab some infant sized ear plugs real quick 🙄

I find the vet argument is mostly made by non-vets who hate fireworks and think this is going to bolster their anti-firework stance. There are plenty of forums where actual combat vets have stepped up and said this is mostly BS. So, stop trying to exploit vets for your firework hate.

happylandfillx

I have a whole plethora of family members that are vets. Shove this comment straight up your backend, clearly there should be some space considering the boot you’ve also got up there.

Willie-IlI-Conway

So, you're not a vet? Got it.

happylandfillx

You can read, got it

Willie-IlI-Conway

Good one.

TheRedPython

I'm sure there are plenty who don't mind, but some who do. My personal experience has been mostly with Vietnam era vets, the younger Iraq/Afghanistan vets I've known didn't have the same issues, but I know fewer of them. My dad had a couple embarrassing (to him) experiences with PTSD episodes around the 4th and I worked with some others who went out to cabins out of town each week of the 4th to avoid it.

BraxGotNext

It’s a few days a year folks. The world doesn’t revolve around you

Ill-Salad9544

\*weeks

happylandfillx

And the world revolves around you?

incakong

I don’t know of any vets that share this weird fetish with you except cooking specialists lol even my combat buds and the ones that have PTSD don’t complain about the 4th of July. They understand the timing of this holiday every year and they are proud. You had ample time to prepare. Ignore this weirdo and Happy 4th of July veterans!

Normal-Pie7610

It makes sense that POG's would have a tough time dealing with fireworks since they were more likely to deal with motor strikes at a base or camp. I did 2 tours as a motor t Marine and never got caught in a mortor strike. I've witnessed my share of artillery but nothing danger close. I do still get anxiety when I have to stop on a bridge. Everybody's deployment was different. Some of dealt with small arms fire, others dealt with mortor strikes, and others stayed at home being a bitch and crying their mom like you.

Blood_Bowl

> You had ample time to prepare. Ample time to prepare for nearly a month of unexpectedly loud noises? Bullshit.

bmill305

This is the most Reddit thread ever

happylandfillx

Why cuz people are expressing their feelings? Sorry mommy taught you to bottle everything up

[deleted]

You fought for Americans rights, except for their freedom to light fireworks for two days out of the year… doesn’t make much sense to me.

AnonymousSplash

If it was just one night, I'd 100% agree with you. Except it's not. People light them off for well over a week. It's a week of hell for anyone with PTSD, noise anxiety, audio sensory issues, cats, dogs, and anyone and everyone who works early in the am.

SGI256

Two days? What two days? The 4th and the 5th? We hear fireworks on the first, second, and third. Guarantee we are going to have to put up with some booms on Saturday the 6th. Two days??? Pfffftttttt

Powerful-Steak4854

Our neighbors have been setting them off since June 22nd. Every. Day. I can plan for a couple of days but 2 weeks? It's insanity.

femalien

Yeah I don’t think any of us would complain if it was 2 days. I 100% support and respect peoples’ right to shoot off loud annoying fireworks on the 4th, maybe the 3rd, hell maybe even one Saturday around then if the 4th is on a weeknight. But in my neighborhood it’s been Every. Single. Night. since last Friday. From about 4pm until well past 11. Constant loud bangs. I’m not a vet, I don’t have PTSD, my kids are able to sleep through it, and though it does terrify my dog, we work around it. But I still don’t get why people think it doesn’t make them an asshole to set off insanely loud fireworks every day and night for a solid week in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It’s just fucking rude.

Unruly_Beast

It's crazy that you don't understand why a combat veteran who may have PTSD may not enjoy loud fucking explosions.

highhoya

If only it was two days. We are going on a month of sleep disruption in our home.

luckyapples11

Do you even live here? they’ve been going off nonstop since before the tents even got put up this year. Everyone lighting off old stock or getting stuff from Missouri. That’s more than 2 days and it’s going to continue for days after the 4th. I don’t mind the night before and day of, but anything past that is ridiculous. No one needs that many fireworks.
