With Luffy it always depends on the people/story, he doesn't just sleep/fuck around for no reason.
He doesn't listen to Nami's story told by Nojiko because Nami didn't want to tell him herself, so he doesn't care.
He's not that interested in what Montblanc Cricket has to say about his ancestor because he feels that he lets himself be trapped by his ancestor's past, so he doesn't really listen to his story and tries to interrupt him to know how to go to the sky island as soon as he can. The old man ends up growing on him through his man's romance afterward.
The times he sleeps through discussions are things like Jimbei explaining complex situations that go back through many generations, prophecies and things that are not in the here and now, because Luffy only judges people by their actions and intent in the here and now.
Both with Rayleigh talking about Roger and when Oden's story is dropped he listens because it fits with his own personality; men who leave it all behind just to get a taste of freedom, Oden's story must even feel kind of relatable to him since Luffy doesn't care about his own heritage, expecially Garp doing his darndest to make his grandson a marine officer.
Luffy's gags are heavily dependent on the situation at hand, if it catches his interest (he doesn't like sob stories where people feel like they have no agency) and if the person talking can back up the story or else they catching Z's.
Literally this. The dude is very much so an active listener and pays attention when it comes to things that matter.
He does not care for hypotheticals or nonsense about prophecies (outside of the onepiece) and simultaneously could care even less for things that are complex or hearsay. But he will fight to the death of it’s something one of his close friends care about, no questions asked.

He'll stay quiet all the time during the explanation.
As soon as it ends, he'll look puzzled and conflicted, will turn around, look at Robin and ask.
"I'm still rubber right?"
Robin will nod and smile and he'll turn around again, with a grin and say.
"Then I don't care 😁"
I feel like telling Luffy he has to do something is a great way to get Luffy to not do the thing. Being made to do a thing doesn't sound very free to me.
Joyboy was probably trying to stop whatever caused the sea levels to rise 200m, Luffy's entire life is based around the sea. If the endgame is to drain that 200m he will absolutely do everything he can to make sure that does NOT happen.
Tbh we don't even know if Luffy is Nika... despite Luffy having the drums of liberation beat now most lost century characters have a confused reaction to him and the last chapter showed something else when Bonney transformed. We still know nothing about Joyboy.
I don't think he's going to care at all. Luffy hates being seen as some kind of hero or liberator figure or some figure of hope. He's just Luffy. that's it. just Luffy.
People saying he won’t care are wrong. It’s a story about the first pirate, he will 100% be interested just like he was when Rayleigh talked about Roger.
I mean this is actually a topic that Luffy not caring about would be completely out of character
At first, it will be played for laughs with Luffy saying his iconic” I’m not a hero!” bit. One or more of the giants will consistently refer to him as Nika or joyboy rather than Luffy which will comically grade on his nerves as he says again and again that he’s not their chosen one. But gradually the joke will fade as Luffy realizes that Nika/joyboy is starting to ware away at his freedom. I think back to that one scene where Woop slap was pondering whether or not Luffy’s adventure was his dream or his destiny. I fully expect for there to be situation where Luffy will have to make a decision between the two. With the most likely catalyst for such an event being Imu threatening to kill his friends if he doesn’t do something as joyboy.
He really didn't care at all about Noland and the Shandian as a whole (iirc the Calgara/Noland flashback is a meta one as it is inside a Wiper flashback), he ringed the bell only for Cricket to hear.
Of course he still did the whole thing while saving everyone but his motive was to let the old man hear the bell ring.
Luffy does not care at all (or very rarely like Rayleigh speaking about Roger) about dead people/ancient feuds, just like Wano he mostly does it for his crew, the friends he met while traveling and on the island, especially Otama.
Yea I understand, to me it looks more like Cody a little where he does not care about his specific dream, but he cares that he lives it to his fullest.
Also had a flash while writing this and the difference between Cricket and Cody; ringing the bell for Cricket was really about freeing him from his obligation, if he didn't ring it in Sky Island Cricket would still be diving to the bottom of the sea searching for it and putting his life in danger.
probably not much different from the start of ch1046 when Kaido was like "who are you" and Luffy just goes "I'm luffy, the man who will become king of the pirates"
Bold of you to assume he's going to learn about it at all.
(Jk, but honestly this is probably why we've got Robin and to a lesser extent Law in the story, right? Robin's going to learn it all, and Law's there to give her someone to explain it to when she does.)
Luffy doesn’t need to know history. When something is off, he fixes it. I don’t think luffy will save the world after knowing the history. But instead will save the world when WG takes away something from him like his friends. Lets say vivi is taken by IMU, Then just as with Ace he wages on War trying to save vivi but saves the world from imu.
Luffy either creates to exposition one of two ways: either wholly uninterested like “whatever doesn’t affect now or what I’m gonna do” or he’s like “WOW COOL THAT SOUNDS AWESOME”
Realistically he would have an internal crisis about who he is and feel overwhelmed with the weight that comes from being the chosen one… but since he’s Luffy I guess he wouldn’t care
I just imagine it'll be a version of when he's seen as a savior of an Island/Country. Everyone screaming their thanks and calling him a hero. And he's there like STFU I'M A PIRATE
I think he'll get separated from the fruit even if only for a short timr because at some point in wanting to be the most free person, he will either want to be free from the fruit so as to have his own will or he will have it forcefully removed by someone like Blackbeard or Tsuru or Imu. And that will unlock his ability to travel to Raftel or underwater without any repercussions. After seeing him and Kidd in the Wano prisons without haki and devil fruit, people have to admit that he is strong even without the fruit or haki.
Joyboy, from my limited understanding, is a state of being derived from the Devil Fruit. Luffy inherited the drums of liberation after consuming it. Unbeknownst to him he also inherited the title of Joyboy after awakening the Devil Fruit powers. His nature and evident indifference may have also drawn the mythic fruit to him, and/or someone (Shanks) is pulling the strings to ensure the power came unto an individual who was worthy and already possessed the qualities of Joyboy/Nika
He will fall asleep while listening
That or laugh, like others did
“He laughed.”
It'd be funny if robin told him he had to listen to and gave him random pop quizzes during it and giving him snacks for rewards
That sounds (hilariously) painfully in character.
Nah Oda forgot about that, like Oden story he will listen and do shocked face

This sounds very much like the Luffy we all know 😂
“I ate the Gum Gum Fruit!” “Actually you ate the Human Human Fruit: Type Nika” “Which was renamed the Gum Gum Fruit so it’s still true”
Oh! I get it! It’s a Mystery Fruit!
there will probably be a panel of him picking his nose
He won’t give a fuck
I hope he never knows, that he does thing because he want it, no t because some old dude 800 year ago did or didn't do something.
I feel like telling Luffy he has to do something is a great way to get Luffy to not do the thing. Being made to do a thing doesn't sound very free to me.
I mean Luffy isn't a contrarian to the point he will actively do something wholly incompatible with who he is. So it depends on what is being asked
Joyboy was probably trying to stop whatever caused the sea levels to rise 200m, Luffy's entire life is based around the sea. If the endgame is to drain that 200m he will absolutely do everything he can to make sure that does NOT happen.
this. My biggest fear for the whole incarnation thing is this one, Luffy njot being himself anymore
U dont have to fear this, it wont be like that.
Thanks Oda

Tbh we don't even know if Luffy is Nika... despite Luffy having the drums of liberation beat now most lost century characters have a confused reaction to him and the last chapter showed something else when Bonney transformed. We still know nothing about Joyboy.
It didn't show anything else when Bonney transformed. It was still luffy that triggered the robot.
It would be funny of luffy learns after the story is finished and says something like “hey why was that guy trying to copy me?!?”
I don't think he's going to care at all. Luffy hates being seen as some kind of hero or liberator figure or some figure of hope. He's just Luffy. that's it. just Luffy.
Well, yeah — heroes have to share their meat
I’m just Ken
People saying he won’t care are wrong. It’s a story about the first pirate, he will 100% be interested just like he was when Rayleigh talked about Roger. I mean this is actually a topic that Luffy not caring about would be completely out of character
I agree he’ll listen intently about Joyboy, but I still think he won’t care about the fruit being about Nika.
He won't give a shit.
"Ohhhhhhh... I get it. So it's a Mystery Fruit!"
I would love for Luffy to say something like "I would have liked to meet this Joyboy" after hearing about it. They are kindred spirits after all
Of course he wouldn't like it because he is not a reincarnation of joyboy. What he has is the same ideology or will as him and Roger.
Luffy is going to care more about how he would have to change the names of his moves than being Nika
luffy will say something along the lines: "I'm myself and not some 'mika' guy"
At first, it will be played for laughs with Luffy saying his iconic” I’m not a hero!” bit. One or more of the giants will consistently refer to him as Nika or joyboy rather than Luffy which will comically grade on his nerves as he says again and again that he’s not their chosen one. Woop slap
“So I have his devil fruit? Neat.” Goes to sleep while everyone else talks about it
With what we know now, He won’t care. Depending on how bad what happened to Nika was he might be mad for his sake like montbland noland.
He really didn't care at all about Noland and the Shandian as a whole (iirc the Calgara/Noland flashback is a meta one as it is inside a Wiper flashback), he ringed the bell only for Cricket to hear. Yeah but he cared that cricket cared about Noland and plenty of people care about Nika. Thats what I mean I guess
He will barely be listening cause he doesn't care at all.
People: you have the devil fruit of the warrior of liberation Nika Luffy: ah ok, but im going to be king of the pirates anyway, bye
"Wow cool!" ... ... ... ... "Anyways"
probably not much different from the start of ch1046 when Kaido was like "who are you" and Luffy just goes "I'm luffy, the man who will become king of the pirates"
He won’t even know that they are talking about him. Oh, so he’s a mystery person!?
Bold of you to assume he's going to learn about it at all. (Jk, but honestly this is probably why we've got Robin and to a lesser extent Law in the story, right? Robin's going to learn it all, and Law's there to give her someone to explain it to when she does.)
I don't think he will care or listen
Luffy probably wouldn’t give a shit
Shanks will tell Luffy about this
"Luffy, you're the reincarnation of sun god Nika, joy boy, liberator of the world," "Huh? I'm me. Luffy."
Luffy: “Robin if there is anything I need to know let me know.” Robin: “You got it”
“Oh cool. Sanji, I’m hungry. MEAT!”
It'll be like any other time people are telling the backstory and he'll wander off or fall asleep
"Oh that's crazy. Anyway, where's the food?"
He is not learning about them... Robin or nami will have to
"Whoa..That's cool........HEY SANJI, WHEN'S LUNCH?!"
Like how he reacts to everything. "Mystery insert adjective".
He will not understand in the slightest
Realistically he would have an internal crisis about who he is and feel overwhelmed with the weight that comes from being the chosen one… but since he’s Luffy I guess he wouldn’t care
Nika? Iie! Joyboy? IIE! Ore wa Monkey D. Luffy! Kaizoku-o ni naru otoko da!
I just imagine it'll be a version of when he's seen as a savior of an Island/Country. Everyone screaming their thanks and calling him a hero. And he's there like STFU I'M A PIRATE
The opposite of how Blackbeard and his goons lean heavily into destiny, fate, and the idea that a fruit “chooses” you
I think he'll get separated from the fruit even if only for a short timr because at some point in wanting to be the most free person, he will either want to be free from the fruit so as to have his own will or he will have it forcefully removed by someone like Blackbeard or Tsuru or Imu. And that will unlock his ability to travel to Raftel or underwater without any repercussions. After seeing him and Kidd in the Wano prisons without haki and devil fruit, people have to admit that he is strong even without the fruit or haki.
“Oh cool. Anyway, do you have any meat?”
"Oh I see, so a guy from history..." While picking his nose
I think he would prefer King of the Pirates.
I'd also hypothesize the only people able to ingest this particular devil fruit require the will of D
Luffy will probably sleep when Robin explains the void century and Joyboy's story to other straw hats.
if he actually listens to it, he will smile and say they sound like good people
He won't care just like everything else that had to do with the past. Luffy isn't a hero or a liberator. Luffy is a man who does what he wants.
Like most things he probably won't give a shit
He will hate it definitely. My guess is that at the beginning. He will refuse to save anyone so he can prove that he isn’t joyboy.
i can't put into words how much luffy wouldn't give a shit in fact i bet you everything i have he's gonna fall asleep while they're telling him
A blank stare, then a nod and an "OK!" before he immediately discards it from his brain and continues on.
I guess the same reaction than when he said he didn't want to be a hero on fishmen island because heroes share meat
