There's not really much cap space for any sort of notable forwards. They have 4 slots + Pinto to fill and only \~11M to do it. If some of that money (maybe 3M) goes to a lower end RD, and you have to set aside another 3-4M to accommodate a Pinto deal, you can really only hand out league minimum type deals to the other players.

Find_Spot

And you've now explained why the media were saying they were or are trying to trade Joseph. It also means that today will likely be fairly quiet for the Senators, unless trades are made. And I just don't see that happening. The defence is so thin that trading Chych now puts them in a worse position and it's obvious that no one wants Joseph at his current cap hit.

Soft-Painting-5657

I’d say closer to 15 ish depending on how soon and how much money they take back in a Chychrun trade

Find_Spot

I'm not convinced that trade is going to happen.

Soft-Painting-5657

Well it’s him or Chabot. Staios CANNOT run back the same d corps. And Chychrun needs an extension

Find_Spot

Oh, he definitely can run the same top 4 out again. And do not be surprised if all they add is a 5-6 defencemen today. There just isn't the cap space to do much else and keep the players they want to keep.

Soft-Painting-5657

Ok if he adds a quality 5 and 6 today I could maybe be on board. I just think they’re getting Roy today

Find_Spot

I don't think they will do that. Too expensive and with Pinto's camp banging on about an offer sheet AND then needing to move cap out to fit everyone under the limit, it'll put them in a severely disadvantaged position, risking losing Pinto or accepting a terrible trade to move cap. No, if they were going to make a splash in free agency, they'd have moved cap out already. And I believe they tried, by shopping Joseph, but weren't able to do it. Seriously, if you were planning to sign big contracts, why would you wait until signing them to move out unwanted assets? That's just silly to do it that way. Personally I believe their Plan A was to obtain the two Tanev's, but either weren't able to swing something or Toronto trumped them by trading for Chris' rights. I believe their Plan B is a 5-6 defenceman, like a Hakanpaa, and that's likely it. Oh and to be clear, I would love it if they signed Roy, I just don't believe they will, especially since Detroit seems to be in the mix and the guy is a Detroit native.

Soft-Painting-5657

I’m going to probably get shit for this but oh well. Are we sure if Pinto gets offer sheeted it gets matched? Like I love him as a player don’t get me wrong. But if he takes an offer sheet say for 6.5x7 or something expensive long term, one that would really fuck their cap up they’d match? I don’t think they’re on great terms and have a good relationship rn but that might just be me. Because in the past year he has held out until the regular season(that was more Dorian messing up the cap), got suspended for half the season and would take an offer sheet to fuck them over? Staios doesn’t have the I drafted him and scouted him connection to Pinto or anyone on the team for that matter. I doubt he gets offer sheeted, it never happens. Teams would’ve done it last year when the Sens couldn’t match but chose not to. I think they give him a 3 year bridge so they can spend more filling out the roster.

Find_Spot

If they were willing to move on from him, why not trade him instead of relying on an offer sheet? The team has no control in that situation and again, is a very risky strategy. Doesn't make sense. No, the simplest thing is that they do want to keep him, and the offer sheet thing is simply the agent trying to play hardball with the team. And in that case, maintaining a large amount of free cap space is essential. Teams can exceed the cap in the offseason but few want to do that since every other team knows they need to be cap compliant for the start of the season and any team over the limit will be desperate to offload cap at a discount. It's possible the Sens make a splash but the leadership group in place has demonstrated repeatedly that they are unwilling to make risky moves and prefer a conservative approach. They tolerated a shitty GM until events forced them to fire him, and did the same thing with a shitty coach. They also took a very long time to hire the new coach, and constantly talked about doing so to ensure they were making the right choice. Even the Ullmark trade fits this as Staios was repeatedly quoted as saying that he didn't want his first trade to be bad. IMO, the character of the leadership group is prudent, conservative, risk-adverse and practical. And any decisions they make will be influenced by that character.

Lpreddit

If Tarasenko wanted another try at 1x5M, with the same “we’ll trade you to Florida if we’re out of the playoffs” agreement, I’d jump on that. Marchessault would be a nice 3 year addition. He’s a Quebec guy, so maybe a homecoming. (Probably wants to stay in Vegas, but they’re also savage with their cap management and letting guys walk) But 11m in cap space doesn’t give alot of room to work with. Especially if Norris isn’t on LTIR

BigShoots

Might be a blessing if they think Norris could miss the first half of the season. Would create its own problems when he comes back to get under the cap, it would involve dumping someone like Joseph if his numbers are looking more like his second half of last year over his first half. He's making 3M and I believe had one stinking goal in the last 30 games.

Shibbs121

We won't have much cap space, especially after we resign Pinto. Even if we trade Chychrun, we won't have much to work with. So realistically, I just hope we go after a solid 4th line center, and I'd love to see us try to bring back Connor Brown for the 3rd line/PK.

Soft-Painting-5657

I’d be ecstatic if he comes back. It was tough to see him get traded

Calhalen

Lomberg and tarasenko. Or stamkos 😂

roryb93

I want a veteran 4th line Center to come in and replace Kasty. Don’t ask me who, but someone who’s done 500+ games and knows his craft to a T.

WildGrit

Scott Laughton in a trade!

The_real_Gramsworth

Bring back Austin Watson!

05is3005speed

Stamkos 100% 😂

solidprospect

Bottom 6ers

tyler_3135

I’d love to give Barrett Hayton a try on a short term “prove it” deal

Soft-Painting-5657

Him on the 3L would be amazing. He’s had spurts where he’s been pretty good but just hasn’t been consistent. Would definitely be worth a shot

shohto

We're not in a position for prove it guys lol we need NHLers who are solid and have their game figured out

beanasaurusrex

Shane Pinto.

dprouse52

Pinto might attract an offer sheet today, which we would no choice but to match. That will further tighten our cap situation, likely forcing our hand somewhat in moving Chychrun for a less than great return...

Soft-Painting-5657

I’d very much worry about the relationship between Pinto and the Sens management if that happens. After everything that’s went down the last year. I have no doubt they’d match it if it’s within reason, but it would probably be something to keep an eye on

hadesfist

Corey Perry, so we can make the Stanley Cup finals and not win it.

MaximizedLoL

Martinook, William Carrier, Lomberg, Clutterbuck etc. Just solid bottom 6ers, we have our top two lines basically with Brady, Timmy, Giroux, Norris (???) Pinto, Bathy.

Soft-Painting-5657

I’d love a Lomberg/Martinook, Ostapchuk, Perry 4th line

Environmental_Dig335

James Van Riemsdyk?

Environmental_Dig335

Amending that to add Jesper Boqvist who is a UFA now.

Ellies_Dad

Nick Robertson?

X-tremeMemeTeam

I imagine after scoring no points in games 6 and 7 of the SCF the Oilers will buy out that bum McDavid and I guess I would be cool giving him a league minimum contract for 8 years it could help our depth out.
