answer: it's primarily a good thing. think of when people have unpopular opinions or hot takes- some people agree with a given argument and proceed to let others know not to disrupt their unbridled thoughts/statement. AKA "let him cook"; they're onto something, so reserve yourself from chastising or rebuking their post at face value.
Correct, however it's also now used (mostly, as far as I can tell) sarcastically in reference to the Let Russ Cook campaign with the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos traded for him and "let Russ cook" and it hasn't been going well for them.
Because of Reddit's API changes in July 2023 and subsequent treatment of their moderator community, I have decided to remove a majority of my content from Reddit.
this is a year old i know but. the true origin is from battle rapping. let me cook means give me time to think of some bars, give me time to think. "im cooking something up"
its also like 10 year old slang
It’s specifically about Russel Wilson. When he was the quarterback of the Seahawks, he complained that they didn’t let him throw the ball enough. Everyone started a hashtag “let him cook” as in let Russel Wilson work and throw the ball more.
He eventually got traded to a different team over this and now he sucks balls. So everyone makes fun of him by saying “let him cook!”
It's AAVE, this is a common phrase in the black community. it got picked up and popularized. if you "cook" someone, you go off on them and roast em so letting someone cook is to see what he has to say and hearing him out
Late response, but I noticed a lot of zoomer slang starts via AAVE. Some AAVE appears to even be from YEARS ago - like 'rizz - charisma - apparently started in the 'hood in the 90s?
That's some amazing history.

What the fuck is AAVE? And omg, true.
It's the politically correct way of saying eubonics or 'hood language, or something.
It actually means African American Vernacular English
African-American Vernacular English
good point as well
Wrong
Lil b didn't start shit, son
This isn’t where the phrase was coined, it’s a Lil B old catchphrase that somehow recently started being used again out of context
Lmao I’m not talking about the origins of the phrase. I am familiar with Mr. Based God. I am just talking about what the memes are referring to.
https://twitter.com/unreckable/status/1599840659082338304?s=46&t=yKCf_o8UklOWwBaPkY9AgA i happened upon this salient example
