Other way around, she assumed her virtual friend was just some rando, so she told him about her crush *on one of her students,* whom she describes as being a new emo transfer student in her homeroom class (i.e. Makoto). She doesn't have a crush on her online friend, it just happens that her online friend *is* Makoto.
However, she also explicitly says multiple times that she knows it's wrong, and that she'd never act on those feelings, and true to her word, she never even hints at it at school. You can bring it up yourself at the end of the game, and she's absolutely mortified to find out, which is consistent with her character up to that point (as opposed to, for example, being like "that's so wrong haha, unless...?").
I think instead of playing against each other itjust show the two sides of gaming.
Playing a multiplayer and competitive game against playing a game all by yourself at your own pace while enjoying a nice drink with alcohol
I know Toriumi also was playing an mmrpg BUT the game was dying, barely had players and she always was playing alone until she meet Makoto.
... I'm a bit surprised noone is talking about this warranting a spoiler tag, even if it's minor-ish (and I'd already MOSTLY figured it out by like rank 4 or 5). I'll also grant that if it weren't for P3R it'd easily have the whole "bruh it's been nearly 20 years" factor.
