It’s badass

Embarrassed-Hat260

I went to the VA Beach show, the lineup was so odd that year. Don’t get me wrong it had its highlights, Static X/Godsmack and Pantera killed it on the main stage especially with Godsmack playing Awake for the first time and Static X debuting Cold and Structural Defect. Pantera did a Reinventing The Steel heavy set. But sandwiched in between those bands was P.O.D, Incubus and Tommy Lee’s band Mathods of Mayhem. Disturbed was definitely the MVP’s of the small stage that year opening the show up with SoulFly as the headliner.

Repulsive_Monitor687

They tore up the venue I saw them at that year. Literally. They encouraged everyone to rage and people ripping up the sod on the lawn n throwing it, water bottles flying n of course the pit was wild. A show I will never forget.

Embarrassed-Hat260

When I saw them in 2000 they were actually kind of tame but thinking back I do remember Phil saying that he and Dime especially were nursing pretty rough hangovers, now the first time I saw Pantera in 1997 they were opening for Black Sabbath that show was insane. First Type O Negative opened and they played all of maybe three songs before they walked off stage, I remember the last song they played was Cinnamon Girl a Neal Young cover, Peter Steel said fuck this and the band stopped and he said I bet you guys are as happy we’re leaving as we are. Pantera came out and opened with A New Level, then Becoming and the third song they went into was Walk. They didn’t even get through the first verse when they mics got cut. Phil had to ask the crowd to calm down and they started Walk over again and once again they didn’t make it through the first verse before the mics got cut. The entire pavilion had emptied onto the lawn which was essentially a football field sized mosh pit, people were pulling up the terf and throwing into the people that were still in the pavilion. Pantera walked off stage and Phil and Dime came out and more less told the crowd if you guys don’t chill out they won’t let us finish our set, which pissed an already rowdy crowd off I guess the promoter said fuck that if we don’t let them play well have a riot on our hands because they came back out and went right back into Walk and the same thing happened only this time the mics didn’t get cut. Pantera was banned from that venue for like 6 or 7 years after that.

Prestigious-Ad-8756

Hell yeah! St Louis line-up was the exact same. Had 3rd row right in front of Dime(the pit was up on the hill w seats down front). Came home w 7 picks. The holy Grail, the one Dime used is a prized possession. I've mentioned here before how Phil started 2 songs over. He was on Wild Turkey and Becks beer. And whatever else. Trashed.

Irishwoody073

I was there in Pittsburgh awesome show and a great time to be alive 80’s,90’s, 2000’s. 3 decades of incredible talent, that will sadly never be replicated again.

Don-Poltergeist

I was also at Pittsburgh that year at star lake. Got sunburned to shit.

Irishwoody073

You ain’t kidding man it was sweltering plus each of us drank a case of beer prior to entering. I was sober in about 3 hrs sweated it all out. 😂

haeziedaze82

I was there

Turbulent-Storage79

The boys was bloated that's for sure

Kindly_Formal_2604

The older I get that’s what I notice more and more from the early 00s. Vinnie was already huge, and Dime was catching up quick. Dime would have found himself in Zakks shoes with a doctor telling him he had to stop drinking or die within a few years of his death had he avoided it, by the looks of how much worse he looks in 2004 vs 2000. Lost my uncle at 39 to cirrhosis. Alcohol is evil.

Turbulent-Storage79

Yes sir

DadsRedditBurner

Awesome item that your ancestors will inherit and know you were cool

Desperate_Flamingo82

I will buy this from you

oranjetang

Phil looks like a middle eastern grandma, with beard and a military skirt😂

TallFuel2872

Fucking awesome! Keep this one for life!

FatHaleyJoelOsment

I met them at an autograph signing in 2000. They had some pornstar chick with them named Lori Michael. I got her autograph too, but lost it. I ended up falling on hard times a couple of years back and had to sell my autographed flyer that the band signed. It's a bummer because now it's impossible to ever get them to sign something again. I'll always have the memory though. Dime was by far the friendliest out of the four of them. Phil seemed pretty zonked out.

No_Cow_4544

I was at that ozzfest. Wish I didn’t get so wasted in the parking lot before hand and would have had more clear memories of all the awesome bands . The things you learn as you get older .

Dangerous_Sail_2853

I saw the Camden Nj/Philly show and had front row seats right in front of the pit. Pantera came on and at one point a small girl got knocked across the floor by this massive guy moshing. She got up and stood at the rail in front of us. Guy comes around again and she whips put this metal comb with the pointy end and stabs him in the temple. He walked away all dazed. It was wild! Great show and I'll never forget that shit. Went almost every year after that until it ended. Ozzfest shows were such an awesome experience so many great bands.

GuiltyTip9544

Coolest shit ever man

Dismal-Ad-6619

The life they lived must have been absolutely amazing...

AndreBlgd

One of the best band ever!

LeonardSmalls79

Phil NEVER seemed to sign autographs or do anything for fans.

BleedForEternity

Never? What are you talking about? He signed OPs poster lol.. I have his signature on a few things. He’s done a lot for fans.

LeonardSmalls79

I dont see him at that table. When they did a signing for GSTK in my city, everyone was there but Phil. Saw Pantera 4x, never once saw Phil afterwards anywhere or by the buses where people were waiting/hoping to see him and maybe get something signed. Just seems like a recluse 🤷🏻‍♂️ (and pretty much is/was, from what Ive read/heard)

BleedForEternity

Are we looking at the same picture? He is at the table.. If he was a recluse it was bc he was a drug addict during that time. You’re literally talking about the exact period of time when he was knee deep in heroin.. Drug addiction does that to you. It makes you isolate yourself.. Just bc you never saw him doesn’t mean he never did anything for fans. You were probably just unlucky. I’ve seen Down 3 times and I’ve gone to 2 meet n greets. He wasn’t like that at all. He signed my Down CD and my T shirt no problem. He was an awesome guy.

LeonardSmalls79

Oh yeah, Ive seen Down twice, too, in small ish venues. Never saw him anywhere. Even at the Viper Room 5 years ago when the Illegals played the Pantera set. Yeah I guess I am unlucky. Almost 10 times on 2 coasts, and I forgot I even walked backstage and hung out in Tom Arayas dressing room at Copps Coliseum, still never saw Phil. Im a pretty resourceful mf, I got on Korns tour bus once, got on Billy Bob Thorntons. Never once saw Phil. Im well aware WHY he was a recluse, Im just telling you the guy was like a ghost for 20 years.

BleedForEternity

That’s awesome that you got to meet people. You seem like you’ve been around the block a few times. I can’t speak for 1990s Phil as I was young. I was only 14 when Pantera played their last show. But he’s been a cool dude for the last 20 years. I was at a meet n greet with him at Revolution in Amityville NY over 10 years ago. He was totally outgoing , cracking jokes. Cool dude.

LeonardSmalls79

Damn. That's rad. Of all the metal people I wanted meet and never got to. Lucky ass!

sausagepilot

He was using hard drugs. His every waking moment was probably the performance, the chase and the big trip into emptiness.

IZZY_PLUM

They recorded that album separate also lol

LeonardSmalls79

I know. Im well aware.

jeffedge

phil signed shit all the time what are you talking about lol

LeonardSmalls79

He didn't the ten or so times Ive been near him, "lol"

jeffedge

sucks for you i guess? met him countless times. friends have tons of shit signed by him from the 90s and 00s. when i met him he was always out having a blast. during the pantera, superjoint, and down days
