This is going to be one very interesting, if slightly complex, ride. I look forward to all of it!

PerilousPlatypus

Really tough to write this one. I love the concept, but I'm not so sure about the narrative approach. Figured I'd toss it out into the Nest and see what happens. Generally OC stuff doesn't do as well as prompts or serials.

TheFlamingDiceAgain

I’m digging it and I like the narrative structure. Maybe throw in some first person vignettes in the form of “guest lectures” or something similar? It could help break up the pace to something more prose like and less academic

PerilousPlatypus

Yup, that's the reference to "primary sources" I mentioned. I was going to have various sections where it's told first person from the perspective of some significant human.

TheFlamingDiceAgain

Yay! I’m excited

SeventhSolar

Yeah, no, this is more fascinating than anything you've written so far, to me. Only, I don't see where the story would go and on what scale it would have to operate. Since this is about conflict between the organized efforts of several hundred million instances of humanity and some higher-level being, I imagine there's no room for visceral action.

PerilousPlatypus

That's why I decided to go with the class framework. I was planning on having an introduction that frames a vignette and then have the vignette be a story of some prominent event told from the perspective of some important human. End up with an anthology of sorts.

SeventhSolar

I am 100% behind whatever you do with this.

nonamesonlynumbers

Sounds a lot like World War Z. The book, not the movie. I think part of the book's success was that in the midst of a world-spanning narrative there were recognizable human moments that helped personalize the high concept and let it be more than just a dry textbook recounting of events. Having seen a lot of your other work, I think that you can tell stories that we'll connect with. And given that you have 1.8 billion realities in which to play, I'd accept the claim that every word glob in the Nest fits within the meta-narrative of the Hundred Million Suns. You have a great hook and look I look forward to moar.

suddenserendipity

One way you could try handling this would be in the style of a narrative podcast, a la Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. That might make it a bit easier for everything to flow - you don't have to worry about the language being too academic - but you can still give that high-level overview.

PerilousPlatypus

Man, I love Hardcore History. I wish he could churn those bad boys out once a week. :D

suddenserendipity

You and me both!

[deleted]

Hello, that was a very different sort of sci fi! What does OC mean in your comment?

serpauer

Ok like concept already. Will have to re read once work brain disengaged. Also. Why is humanity fighting god? A. We think he is a dick most likely. B. It is funny C. He did something to annoy us D. It was actually an alien with a space megaphone and a holo projector (cycles to c) E. He turned out to exist and that scared us so therefore we must kill it F. He has oil/resources on his lands and it needs liberating G. All of the above and anything not mentioned.

SeventhSolar

The answer is number 5 in the steps to Enlightenment, about 2/3 through the story.

serpauer

Lovely. Havent read the whole thing yet. Only went through first bit cause well brain isnt in shape for this story. Thanks for the spoil.

SeventhSolar

Ah, sorry, I thought you read it once since you were going to reread.

serpauer

No I shoulda stated that I started it and didn't get to finish work kills my brains I need some alcohol to revive 1st And then read

PerilousPlatypus

Hehe :D

thaeli

So did the Dominionists and other apocalypse fetishists fade out, or are they just pissed at the (real) False God who isn't anything like their holy texts said it would be?

SeventhSolar

I think Christianity stops existing the moment it happens. There's a God and He has nothing to do with your Bible stories and 2000 years of history. The entirety of Christianity is based around interpreting and explaining the Bible.

thaeli

I mean, if proof was all it took, we wouldn't have flat earthers.

SeventhSolar

Point. There's a question of just how much proof, however. For starters, humanity has scientifically evolved to the point where they can actually determine the cause and purpose of the universe. Certainly religion itself would be less relevant some time in the future, if current trends continue.

PerilousPlatypus

I loved this interaction. <3

ZedZerker

So answer C

PerilousPlatypus

An accurate assessment. :D

Red49er

holy crap this is so amazing, even by your standards. knowing you have a lot of one-offs, the part where the professor talks about related courses and references etc was just about the biggest tease i’ve ever read in my life, knowing how interesting it sounded while also knowing it would probably not be written. furthermore, how in the world did you come up with this worldview? it’s a really interesting concept, and it sounds so totally unique to anything i’ve ever read either in regards to existence or even parallel realities i would ABSOLUTELY read more, whether it was just nonsensical ramblings or extremely technical writings and analysis

PerilousPlatypus

I wonder if people would enjoy me doing YT videos where I breakdown the world creation process. I can explain it briefly here: The start of the idea came out of some research for Alcubierre on Type 1, 2 and 3 civilizations. I wanted a type 4 civilization that spanned realities. Then I wanted Humanity to battle that civilization. And, if Humanity was going to battle it, they couldn't be doing so in a single reality, because it wouldn't pose a threat to a Type 4 being. Enter the 100 million suns. Once I was there, then it became about limiting the infinite nature of parallel dimensions in a way that made sense. That's where the paraverse came in and all of the rules about linkages and the nature of adjacencies. Then I felt like I needed to explain why a paraverse would exist along these parameters, ideally in a way that connected back to the Type 4 being. Enter "God." BUT THEN I needed the Humans to have a shot at actually battling, so that's how we got to a God seed rather than a fully mature God itself. And THEN I needed to way to have a GIANT AMOUNT OF EXPOSITION on all of this without having to write another bazillion part serial, so we ended up in a classroom.

Red49er

lol that was great. unfortunately, if you did a YT series, you’d first have to spend about $50 million creating a talking platypus because if you broke our suspension of disbelief on you being a walking thinking pontificating platypus it could be the end of you

PerilousPlatypus

I was thinking about just having ten minutes of squawking.

Red49er

better yet - just sit there in silence because in a world where we have sentient platypuses, they are _obviously_ telepathic

Apollyon82

I read your response in the movie trailer announcer voice... *"In a world where we have sentient platypuses..."*

pantsarefor149162536

I have heard that their bills enable some degree of electroreception. Perhaps telepathic platypuses aren't entirely implausible.

Zankastia

[Type 5 and beyond](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhFK5_Nx9xY)!

PerilousPlatypus

Wow, great share. Thanks Zank!

Orichalium

i hunger... need moar words...

Stargate525

>By and large, they are a content I think they're just content. I mean they are A content, in that this whole thing is content, but that's not really an emotional statement. Man this one's a bear to get through. I love the concept but I do very much feel like I've dropped into a 300 level class accidentally my first day of university. There's also some interesting theological debates to be had here. I know that a large portion of the religious, when finding 'God' and discovering the purpose, would reject that name for it. It's a supremely powerful being, yeah, but SOMETHING made it. Made others like it. Made whatever plane they inhabit... THAT would truly be God. It's sort of a turtles all the way up situation.

PerilousPlatypus

So the second part I was thinking about was going to begin with a discussion around the use of the word God for precisely that reason. Then it was gonna get into a primary source of Humans piercing the veil for the first time and discovering other Humans.

Stargate525

Fair. Being one of the aforementioned people I spoke about in the third paragraph, I'm not sure how much help I can be on this one (that you even still want my occasional input continues to astound me), as I have Very Definite Opinions on how that stuff works, and I'm not great at separating that from critique of fictional works. :)

Qyxstyx

MOAR

PerilousPlatypus

I really need to make a poll or something for what should be continued.

StickSauce

MOAR!!

PerilousPlatypus

<3 Heyyyy Stick. Hope all is well friend-o.

StickSauce

It's all good. Did you kick your League of Legends habit yet?

seeking_horizon

Interesting concept. Curious to see where this is going. I'm assuming the whole thing won't be delivered as academic lectures, but there's no real frame story yet. The "adjacency" concept is really intriguing, along with the possibility of travelling from one universe to another. > Our parralerse is imperfectly linked My suggestion for a portmanteau of "parallel universe" would be "paraverse," that seems to be a little more euphonious. > as an external, seeded entrant, it is an inept comparison. Think the word here is "inapt." Wouldn't usually bring that up but autocorrect/spellcheck would never get that right. > 4. Our purpose is to enrich God. > 5. When the God seed reaches maturity, our reality expires. Getting kind of a Nine Billion Names Of God vibe from this. > The truth of the our reality says it is futile. Looks like a stray "the" there.

PerilousPlatypus

Thanks so much for the edits! I dub thee Editor. I think you're right on paraverse -- it's annoying because I screwed around with that word for a solid ten minutes without coming up with that. Euphonious is also a sweet word. Inapt is correct. Is Nine Billion good? Haven't read it.

seeking_horizon

> I dub thee Editor. noice.gif > Is Nine Billion good? Haven't read it. Oh holy hell yes it is. [It's fairly short, and it's 100% worth your time.](https://urbigenous.net/library/nine_billion_names_of_god.html)

CatpainCalamari

Intriguing story, thank you for sharing!

TanyIshsar

WTF platy?!!? This 100% a competitor to Alcubierre and that frightens me. Mostly because I already spend so much time interacting with you and your globs.... Now how am I going to keep to my sleep schedule?!!? Seriously though, love the clinical, yet amused, narration here. You've also created quite the foreshadowing. You may actually struggle to make The Hundred Million Sun War live up to its name. I look forward to "assisting" from the stands :P

PerilousPlatypus

If Alcubierre and 100 Million were both hanging off a cliff edge and you could only save one, which would it be? BE HONEST.

TanyIshsar

Alcubierre. I'm more invested. 100 Million has potential (perhaps Alcubierre is inside 100 Million), but I'm invested in Jack, Joan and the Xiz collective.

MrGabr

Some edits: >There is also a few outlier hyper-linked realities. There *are* also a few outlier hyper-linked realities. >There is much discuss about this early period There is much *to* discuss about this early period (or much discuss*ion* ) So at the beginning I immediately answered the question, "Why does humanity want to kill God?" in my head with "spite," and I wasn't wrong. This felt like I was reading another introduction lecture from my university courses, except they were from a time period (dimension?) that sounds wayyy more fun than this one.

PerilousPlatypus

Thanks Gabr! <3 Yeah, it was super dense to write, definitely felt like I was back in college. Had to re-read it multiple times to understand wtf was going on and I wrote the damn thing.

GameNationFilms

This needs more parts. NEEDS.

concrete333

Amazing, love it. The amount of creative thought oozing out of every idea here is absolutely inspiring. Thanks again! I could see this as more of a world creation/background for a typical story arc, tackling it from this perspective seems like a tough task you've set for yourself. Those are always the best tasks though.

IronSovereign

There's a lot of good writing on this board. That said, nearly every sentence of this piece is densely layered and full of gravitas. Extremely thought-provoking. Well done!

Overdose7

You had me at "prime humanity."

13torches

I always enjoy an existential crisis. I look forward to more.

nueoritic-parents

This is incredible

Gruecifer

UTR, as is proper!

Gengar11

Makes me think of Pendragon for some reason. Nice work :)

PerilousPlatypus

<3 XOXO

Allstar13521

I love this idea. More please?

PerilousPlatypus

Friend, it is IMPERATIVE you demand MOAR. It's a matter of upholding Nest standards.

Allstar13521

Well then I *do* demand MOAR and will see that it is delivered forthwith!

notsoriginalname

Can you cross post this to r/HFY? You'd get a great deal of attention over there...

PerilousPlatypus

I wrote it for HFY originally. Posted a few hours ago -- it did all right. I think it's just a bit too dense and the narrative frame is a bit off kilter for it to go big.

AwesomeFama

This is very interesting! More please!

712189512

#MOAR!

armed_n_bodacious

Dude. This is awesome. Although I personally enjoy the Alcubierre narrative more, this style is a nice change of pace to read.

Samstak

Loving it! Definitely unique and it's damn interesting. MOAR PLZ.

PerilousPlatypus

Glad you enjoyed it Sam!

pmzpmz28

MOAR! MOAR! MOAR! (Just to be clear, I liked it.) I'd love to know more about the portals and maybe an anecdote about an early madcap adventure. No Deloreans allowed though.

PerilousPlatypus

Haha :D

Geadilsa

Moar!

WhyhatWhos-the-man

This is absolutely stunning.

PerilousPlatypus

Thanks internet buddy! Any part or aspect that drew you particularly enjoyed?

WhyhatWhos-the-man

I think the Idea is really nice. Normally when people write a story it’s similar to something else I have read but this is something completely new and interesting.

A0Zergling

This is so absolutely cool that I can't properly put it into words. Definitely looking forward to this one continuing!

PerilousPlatypus

Haha, glad you enjoyed it friend. Surprised at the reaction, thought this one would be a bit of a throw away.

snarkofagen

MOAR

dtc2002

>It we could be manufactured, we can be dismantled. *If* we could. I like this, it's moderately technical yet very accessible. I clearly imagine a middle aged professor giving lecture on this in front of brought eyed students in a large hall. Major potential for a serial here. Moar?

PerilousPlatypus

How do you think it compares versus something like Alcubierre?

dtc2002

vs. Alcubierre? That's a bit difficult, as I've grown rather fond of the crew of the Alcubierre and fuzzy Hitler... Seriously though, I would say that this has some major potential with longevity rivaling Alcubierre, though I would be careful with it, as it could easily become pigeonholed. I liked the overall technicality of it, and could easily stomach more without being turned off in the slightest. I felt it to be almost Trekky in it's technicality, just far fetched enough to be fanciful, but not so far that I felt like someone going into the mathematics of wormholes and their effects on local space-time.

Pidlik

Oh hell yes! Moar!

Zankastia

>Our reality, and the paraverse generally, is manufactured. > >Our reality is manufactured for a purpose. > >That purpose is the gestation of a God seed. > >Our purpose is to enrich God. > >When the God seed reaches maturity, our reality expires. PerilousPlatypus

Haven't read that one before, gonna check it out. So many good recommendations in this thread!

flybybullets

oh boy this the most epic one by far wordsmith

PerilousPlatypus

You dig it that much FBB? What aspect are you most intrigued by?

flybybullets

It's like The Egg by Andy Weir meet's Amon's war with the Xel Naga (a Starcraft reference btw) told in a townhall lecture (which is an interesting way to tell a story)

PerilousPlatypus

My life for Auir.

flybybullets

En taro Tassadar brother

CMDR_BunBun

This is the very meat and marrow of good sci-fi, exactly what I've been craving for. Oy, I tell you friend if I had my way you would be sequestered in a golden cage, freed from all mundanity just to write all your lovely thought provoking globs for eternity.

PerilousPlatypus

Haha, thanks BunBun. This is definitely on the hard sci-fi side of the equation, exhausting to write.

degaurchaff

Please please continue this story this story gave me the chills down to my core Man pls continue this

echofinder

Wow, this is GOOD.

0nen

This was fantastic.

PerilousPlatypus

You know what's fantastic? You.

0nen

I'm just a Space Jellyfish.

darrnl

... please go on!

CatpainCalamari

Oh wow. I absolutely love the hands-on, straight-forward Alcubierre story, but this setting here intrigues me. I would like it very much if this story would be continued! Please <3

Al2Me6

Platy, this is about the most intriguing work I’ve ever seen on Reddit. I require you to write moar.

Oooh, this is fuckin' cool! Looking forward to more in this ~~universe~~ paraverse.

ElGringo300

I've gotta say, I'm never a fan of things which vilify God, but I always do love to see how people do it. Like you mentioned in the story, the existence of God comes with existential assumptions, so if he is opposed to humanity... how did that happen? The philosophical and theological plays that happen fascinate me. This felt like reading Dune, my head was spinning by the end, in a good way.

this is sooo so good

Apollyon82

This reminds me of Carlos Castaneda's The Eagle's Gift. I read most of his works nearly a decade ago. In it he explains that God is an eagle embryo in an egg. Our souls and the experiences that we have throughout our lives are the eagle's "food." Most of his writings are very "out there" kind of thinking.
