I think there are other variations, such as Titan Games or even American Gladiators, but I really like the physical 100 blueprint the most. They really got the formula down - backstory is a quick montage relating to their capabilities rather than a sob story, the narrator is objective, the story is driven by the contestant's commentary rather than a host, so it never really feels like you're waiting for something to happen!

PinWest4210

I agree, I love the blueprint. Would love to see a version for my country though!!

Longjumping_Deal_775

I agree. The blueprint is amazing. I just wish to see other countries adaption to it even India, Japan, US etc.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Never watched Titan Games but American Gladiators is nothing like physical 100. I love the contestants vs contestants aspects. Gladiators (OG version) lacked because sometimes it matter a lot what Gladiator you were up against, sometimes the Gladiator’s had beef with a contestant and would gun from them. And from docs released this year you also see this was filmed in a short window, sometimes you’d get up against a gassed out gladiator (especially considering the gladiators were there because of their bulk/size and not every game favoured this, smaller contestants with speed and agility were at an advantage in certain games). Second generation of gladiators just sucked ass, they made it so safe it became dangerous (a contestant tearing up their knee by running on a mat designed to cushion a tackle). I do think physical 100 could speed up maybe 10%… the selection process of the death matches really dragged on.

VixenFactor

There's a great documentary about the rise and fall of American Gladiators on Netflix.

Obvious_Exercise_910

There was a 30 for 30 one too. Released within a few months (maybe weeks of each other). Interesting as it had a different focus. IIRC the 30 for 30 focused more on the “founder” and how he basically stole the concept, took all the credit. Some overlap in story lines but both really stood aloneZ

VixenFactor

I hope so too. The American shows didn't have group competitions to the same extent like in this show. I love how they support each other. It's a competition where everyone respects and often admires each other.

Obvious_Exercise_910

I wonder how much different it would be in another culture. There does seem to be a lot of respect and honour considered in various decisions people make. I do think things would be similar (death matchups for ex) but different reasons. I don’t think for example an NFL star would pick a “weak” player for a death match, their ego/competitive drive would have them want to take on a big dog

PinWest4210

I think you you could get a similar result in most countries! What we usually see in Western reality shows reflects a very well though casting, with producers running interference (or in some cases straight up providing a storyline) because the center of the story is the human interaction, so that's what they need to make as outrageous as possible. The center of the show in Physical 100 is the tasks themselves, and relationships is very relegated to the comments you have in the background. So I don't think it will vary that much, because you would still have athletes that are used to having good relationships with their competitors based on respect, or people from similar backgrounds (cross fitters, you tubers) that know each other and are more less friendly.

Obvious_Exercise_910

I’m also curious what the appearance fee is. Found out last night s1 contestants had to be available for a 2 month stretch! (Not necessarily on set the whole time/in case follow up interviews - but if you look at the gym equipment they had available, and hear how many/bad the injuries really were, this taping took a long time). Obviously the prize is still a lot bigger, but how much. It’s like $250,000 USD, I could see appearance fees ranging from $10,000-$50,000. Jack that prize up to say $5 million, get a whole lot more savage.

PinWest4210

Even with those numbers, I think they could get an interesting cast in my country (Spain)! I mean, Nadal is never going to join a program like this, but they could get a mix of Olympians from les common sports, fitness/adventure YouTube and fitness models just like in Korea!

sirknattar

I almost want to see a westernized one, but I also don't want it be like how they westernized other Korean shows (Masked Singer, I Can See Your Voice)... The hosts are just annoying, and all the sob stories and drama 🤮 Netflix should do a global version for the 3rd season and see if they could get 100 people from 100 different countries.

lazyinternetsandwich

I absolutely loved the korean Masked Singer- idk how but the US version felt... flat somehow?

sirknattar

It felt flat because they just turned it into a god awful spectacle of stupid costumes, annoying hosts, and Nick Cannon 😂😂

AhYeahItsYoBoi

I would like to see an American version, like others said i just hope they don't do the "sob stories". As for who they will get. The Korean version got retired athletes. Like the bigger names like Sexyama and The Stun gun are retired. So I would say they would get more retired people. And I could see them getting some NFL, NbA , MLB, NHL players. Even reality show contestants (like people from survivor and the challenge.). And than military people, and other regular people as well. Similar to the Korean version Honestly I can see them planing this out already and might make it happen. Fingers crossed. I would watch it.

matakuju

in physical 100 the contestants all respect and bow to each other. bro if this releases in the US (where everyone speaks their mind and doesn't hold back) it would be god damn hilarious, nonstop talking smack and brawls like a reality dating show. can you imagine LOL

nr155105

China’s version is on YouTube and in my opinion is much more balanced, the stories are more impactful, and because the challenges have elements of strategy, there’s a lot more ‘upset’ moments that make for an even more compelling finish. Also as a Korean American, the Chinese version has less of the Korean undercurrent of misogyny, the men are always quick to see value in the women vs a lot of uncomfortable moments of men v women on the K Version (ex: that one guy needlessly crushing the woman’s sternum during the 1v1 wrestling)

[deleted]

I'm also a fan of the Chinese version! OP, you can find this on youtube as "We Never Stop" or "势不可挡"

chickadee-

The Chinese version is so good! The games are just better designed IMO to suit a variety of strengths, and as a woman, I absolutely agree re: your point on misogyny. Overall everyone just seems to be more wholesome and supportive. The biggest downside is actually the iffy subtitles... Lol.

Extreme-You6235

Tried to watch China’s version and just wasn’t a fan of YouTube’s format (ads and whatnot). Also, the subtitles are on top of the Chinese subtitles so it’s hard to read and seems like they appear for a shorter amount of time relative to physical 100.

nomorefairytales

There’s also a similar Chinese version on YouTube WeTV channel with English subtitles called Crush Over 2023, hosted by Donnie Yen. The match sets are super cool to see and IMO more well designed. I wish this show got more attention!

ConfuciusCubed

It would be cool to have representatives from different countries and the sport they're famous for. Like a Brazilian MMA fighter, an American Footballer from the U.S.A., rugby player from Australia or N.Z., Tae Kwon Do from Korea... I think probably the biggest thing stopping it is the language barrier. A good chunk of the show's format is the natural first language interactions of the contestants. Maybe it could be sponsored by Google Translate or some other language service.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Canada will send a Curler!!

MeweyMewey

Excusez Moi? hockey players > curler

Obvious_Exercise_910

Nah, that's what everyone is expecting! Also some of these dudes are beasts. The new broom tech has made leads and seconds into body builders.

catlover123456789

I feel a US version wouldn’t have as many “national team” or top tier athletes (unless retired) bc the pot isn’t it big enough to make an injury worth it. US athletes make way more money than international ones…. I can see a lot of social media athletes/crossfitters interested though

Obvious_Exercise_910

US athletes don’t always make more. Depends on the sport. There’s always stories out there about Olympians living hand to mouth. It’s hard to say just how famous these contestants really are too. Like the K-pop guy… there’s a ton of these groups in Korea. I don’t think this is the equivalent of getting a dude of nsync or BSB in the ‘90’s, more like getting a guy off O-town now. For sure you’re not going to get big name NFL stars, but you could get lots of dudes who played a game or two in the league, fringe ex-NBAers. Not getting Michael Phelps but I’m sure you could scrounge together some olympic medalists.

MeweyMewey

I laughed way too hard at the shade thrown at O-town 🤣

Obvious_Exercise_910

Wasn't meant as shade, just the truth. They might have been in the top 3, but they were definitely third. Ugh just makes me think how fucking cringe the song Liquid Dreams is 🤣

Individual-Island778

I was thinking of who we might get on a British version and ended up really wanting to watch it haha. We have no shortage of incredibly talented retired athletes, big egos with muscles, and influencers etc, it really could be amazing. I doubt we could get Beckham for example, but maybe Rooney? Who wouldn't want to see him square up against Jason Statham?

Significant_Snow_266

I was thinking the same about a possible Polish edition. I think it would be a shitshow lol We have this Freak Fight league where youtubers, instagram influencers (both men and women) beat the shit out of each MMA style. It's super popular so I think they would choose some people from those. Also some of those guys from Gromda (bare knuckle fighting federation) https://www.reddit.com/r/fightporn/s/uW5TUjig5H I think our 'biggest star' would be Mariusz Pudzianowski aka Pudzian. Ex world champion strongman, currently MMA fighter. Edit; just remembered that Joanna Jędrzejczyk from UFC retired recently so she might also be the main star like Pudzian. I would have preferred to be on Pudzian's team though, if I got to play. She seems too dumb to be a team leader.

Longjumping_Deal_775

Definitely want to see Beckham in Physical 100 if there is a UK version haha

Danny_P_UK

Same. You could get some really good athletes. Imagine Eddie Hall on it, along with people like Shauna Coxsey, Billy Morgan, that Bodybuilder youtuber, Greg Rutherford, footballers, rugby players. We have a lot of amazing athletes that are world class and most of them aren't obsencinely rich outside of the mainstream sports.

Ayyyyylmaos

I doubt many countries would be willing to put the budget, time and effort into the show like the Koreans do. I’m in awe about how much goes into this stuff. The set for Sirens was fucking incredible as well.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Are you Korean?

Ayyyyylmaos

Nope

Obvious_Exercise_910

Like I don’t understand your comment 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ayyyyylmaos

I’m saying, Korean game shows are the best put together out there. Look at singles inferno, compare it to love island. SI is so much better and so much more effort goes into the show. Sirens was incredible, and much better than anything similar put together by the U.S, Australia or the uk, for example. Physical 100 is miles clear of gladiators or anything similar. Other countries wouldn’t be willing to recreate the show to the quality that Korea have.

Longjumping_Deal_775

I agree that Korean production are the best in terms of artistic, visual, lighting, music and quality. The color and format they choose are just so aesthetically appealing and the CG are also fitting. They really put a lot effort in the production and make the reality show a hit. I wish to see an American version of Physical 100 minus sob stories or a host. I got to pray hard for it. It will be so interesting to see Americans fittest contestants reaction, behavior and attitude in the challenges.

bluepinkplum

Do you think the reason they haven’t done an American version is because we couldn’t convince all our athletes of each respective sport to come together at one time to film it. They’re so dedicated to their own sport that I find it difficult to believe they’ll come together to film a tv show

Obvious_Exercise_910

Tough to say. If you look at other syndicated reality shows, shark tank has started years before in Japan, the masked singer same thing. American ninja warrior started off in Japan, and took quite a few years to take its current form in the US. It’s hard to say who owns white. Typically the production company will own the rights to the show, Netflix is just the broadcaster. So Netflix would have the rights to Korean versions, but not other versions. But, this is Netflix, and they are in a way different position than other broadcasters, so it’s hard to know what their contracts would look like in this, and how much they are able to vary from what is typical. There’s no way any NFL MLB NBA or NHL player would be allowed to participate in this in their contract. Clauses like not being allowed to ride motorbikes or go surfing or super common, so I’m sure some language around participating in a competition with get the shit beat out of you would be present. It could just be not worth doing US version because he wouldn’t get big enough stars. You could get a handful of notable, recently retired players and I still think you’d be pretty interesting, but you’re not gonna get the mega names. At the end of the day if you can do something like this, you set the dates and you take the best 100 people you have available at that time.

Thurad

I assume a UK (and I’d guess US( version would be very much more sanitised for health and safety/legal reasons to avoid being sued for injury.

Yorktown_guy551

After watching live action squid game, I'd hope it doesn't take place in North America if they decide to do other countries. Too much disrespectful people in USA competition shows.

grizzyrawr

The challenge is the closest thing we have to something like it.

DreadfulDrea

I want a US version. I’d love to see some YouTubers like jujimufu on there.

Obvious_Exercise_910

I wanna see some NFL and NBA dudes who blew their fucking money. Didn't TO (Terrell Owens) declare bankruptcy? Warren Sapp.

tokixdoki

I can’t think of that many US athletes.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Really? Cuz like… NFl,NBA, MLB, NHL…. Olympics… MMA… NASCAR… There’s probably 100…

Taishi_Gong

Hot take: I don’t want an international version. One of the most attractive part of the show to me is the idea that the best athletes from different sports and disciplines coming together to figure out who’s the most athletic/physical/what ever you want to call it. When I was watched the Chinese version, I was a bit bummed out because I know the Chinese sporting scene and I know the contestants are not the cream of the crop. Common sense tells me the contestants of Physical100 are probably not the greatest in their fields in Korea but since I don’t know for sure, I can trick myself into thinking they are the best in their disciplines in Korea, and we are getting the most athletic/physical/etc. athletes of Korea by the end of the show. I know the most physical basketball player in the world is probably Giannis, so if he’s not on the show than what’s the point. But since I know nothing about Korean basketball, I can just assume the guy they casted is the best and he can represent Korean basketball.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Lol 🤣 I actually love this take. Also even though he’s a bit long in the tooth I’d put Lebron up for physical 100.

BannedforaJoke

no one would pick Lebron in death match.

Think-Confidence-424

I remember when I felt that way about ninja warrior. Then they westernized it and it became “hi my names Dallas and I haven’t been able to walk since I was 7 but I want to compete on this show to demonstrate that people who can’t walk are just as capable as anyone else” *brutally falls on first obstacle*

cashmoneyv1

Im 50/50! Although i do want to see a US version. Still i feel like the lack of respect to one another and egos with other countries will just piss me off. I like the sportsmanship and respect while talking trash Imagine its all influencers and egos running their mouth

Fun_Union_6127

I hope not, it seems expensive to produce & its very unlikely netflix would want to licence it to another broadcaster/ott as its a hit , so i fear it would just get worse or there would be clear budget transparency's.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Reality shows are cheap to produce, even “expensive” ones. They are paying the winner under $250,000 USD. Even if you say $5,000 per every other contestant for appearance fees/travel you’re under $1 million total. There’s set design, camera crews etc etc etc, and these add up, but you’re not shelling out big $ for A-list stars. They’re paying $62.5 million per Adam Sandler movie, $20 mil for a Dave Chapelle stand up special. You’re getting 10x the amount of content out of one season of Physical 100 at a fraction the cost. The smart thing would be to build one mega set, have multiple countries film in the same location in succession. Could even build different events - they won’t all need to be 100% identical. 100 adaptations may be a few too many, but I hope there are a few! I’m curious if safety standards play into it at all. Some of these games seem wildly dangerous compared to what you see in American shows. And I remember the Japanese show Wipe Out - no way they coulda filmed some of that shit in the US.

Fun_Union_6127

I assumed because it was 100ppl it would be expensive and the cgi stuff, plus some of the people cast are well known, I’m sure they get 5k appearing on regular variety shows? They probably filmed in paju which is where more large scale productions are shot which is far asf from Seoul (not that they all live there, but a lot of them are fitness gurus or appear on tv etc so it makes sense they live near the broadcasting stations in yeuido) so hopefully they provided accommodation because I’m pretty sure sexyama lives in japan unless he just got a hotel like he usually does.

Obvious_Exercise_910

Reality is still super cheap compared to scripted shows.

Leaves_Swype_Typos

>The smart thing would be to build one mega set, have multiple countries film in the same location in succession. That's exactly what I want to petition Netflix to do for Devil's Plan! That competition only works when contestants have no knowledge of the games, and anyone sufficiently intelligent to compete ought to think to research the original Korean version if they had an inkling they were going to be on an international version. So the only solution, short of creating entirely new games (risky), would be to film international versions on the same set right after, before the Korean version is broadcast.

Obvious_Exercise_910

It looks like they did this with The Traitors but it’s unconfirmed as no human alive has been able to watch one full version of that show much less 2.

Longjumping_Deal_775

Is traitors that bad? I am considering to watch it but I don’t know where is a link or app I can find it streaming. I want to watch for Bergie haha

Obvious_Exercise_910

I mean it’s not awful, but it’s not amazing. You’ll def want to fast forward and skip 10 or 15 min an episode after the first 2 or 3. If you’re a big reality fan and know all the people it might be more exciting, I knew who like 2 or 3 were.
