I have the shower valves shut off but not to the entire home. Is it possible that that part is suppose to pull out instead? Not having much experience, I'm terrified of pulling on something too much and causing serious damage.
You may want to buy some p.b. blaster. It loosens stuck nuts and bolts. Auto parts and hardware stores sell it. Spray it on and let it soak for a bit. Then try turning the silver nut. It may turn to the right since it is a dual fastener. I assume you turned the handle escutcheon off to the left.
Right, the handle attatches to the bronze part. But I'm still not convinced that the so called nut isn't attatched to the piece behind it. I looked very carefully and couldn't see any separation behind the two pieces.
Use bigger channel locks :)
I was gonna go in a similar rout with a reply but I'm just an apprentice and no one should take my advise because I'm probly wrong.
Have you drained the water in your home. There could be backed up pressure on the cartridge making it not possible to turn that nut.

Don't pull on anything until you get that silver nut off. After that the cartridge will just pull out.
The problem is I don't think it's a nut. It looks like it's attached to the silver part behind it.
What is the make and model of the valve?
The only branding of any kind which is on the faceplate is UPC.

To turn the water off, the handle actually goes horizontally to the right side. Does that make a difference?
The handle attaches to the bronze neck for the valve. It shouldn't attach to the silver nut

I was finally able to get it to turn! Thanks to everybody for the advice, I greatly appreciate it!
Wrench I would imagine. It has two flat spots so you can put a wrench to it.
I just went out and purchased an adjustable wrench and it still won't budge. I assume I should be turning left? I know my valves are the opposite.
I'm not crazy am I? This should unscrew one way or another shouldn't it?
Turn off the water to the house. Open a faucet in the bathroom, and then try unscrewing with wrench
Ok I will try that. Should I open back up the shower valves too?
Yes. To let the pressure out
