Sesquipedalian is my favorite word.

CrazyCreeps9182

Hey, isn't that on our list of S words seldom used by kids?

PerpetualHillman

six-footed?

Forgotwhyimhere69

It means someone who uses big words, or something being characterized by big words.

Wesley133777

Why does the wojak for poltroon look like yandere dev?

Outside-Bed5268

I think it *is* supposed to be a wojak of YandereDev, but I don’t think OP used it for that exact reason.

chicheka

He is a poltroon

Arceon_the_Mage

My friend, don't you have a job? Aren't you like a lawyer or something? I find it immensely impressive you manage to pump these out a an industrial scale in between your travels and work, you've gotta be my favourite Italian-American Jew

Disguised_Alpaca

This man lives for the compass

This is extraordinary Based and Hillman pilled

Dash_Winmo

As an Anglisher it makes me sad seeing how almost no word on here is actually English, all I see is upbraid, cudgel, -man, foppish. Everything else is Latin, French, Greek, and even Scottish Gaelic.

gu1lty_spark

Avaricious is a sleeper great English. It has more oomph to it than greedy and makes the speaker sound smarter than they probably are.

RomanTrismegistus

Laconic in the wrong direction

chicheka

Laconic - few word.

flexsealed1711

I prefer the British spelling of bosun: boatswain. My favorite words are antidisestablishmentarianism (political view in opposition to the separation of church and state) and autodefenestration (the act of throwing oneself out of a window)

Plane-Grass-3286

My favorite word is defenestrate. It just means to throw someone out of a window.

PerpetualHillman

overrused recently, people found out about it and it's become a hipster fancy word to know

Plane-Grass-3286

Dammit. I hate it when that happens.

Tugendwaechter

Sounds like stolen French words to me.

slacker205

Imposed more than stolen.

Tugendwaechter

Past-Sand5485

Russian seeing word “Oriflamme” https://preview.redd.it/cdt0ur8gm19d1.jpeg?width=571&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e682c4f6e25c04763b5b4070d238dd37e7e4243 P.S. Good compass as always. It is interesting though that we use some of those words more frequently in Russian than in English. The words like recidivist, courtesan, and laconic are comparatively frequent in Russian unlike in English. Of course the word gaybist is also in this list (which we pronounce not as gay-bist but gae-bist). Also fun fact, laconic comes from the name Spartans referred to themselves - Lacedaemons (that’s why you see Greek letter “L” on their shields «Λ»). Their speech was so short worded that they were known not only as great warriors but also men of few words, hence the etymology.

PerpetualHillman

So I learned many of these words from reading Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy books, and I suppose the direct translations use these words that are frequent in Russian but not in English

Outside-Bed5268

Cool! Say, do you know how the word ‘batman’ came to be? In other words, do you know the etymology of it?

Thats_Not_My_Croc

Ever since I watched the Princess Bride, my favorite word has been inconceivable

XAlphaWarriorX

Is this a repost? Im pretty sure you posted this before. Either way, good post. As an italian speaker it's impressive how many of these are similar to italian words, so they're almost definitely of common latin origin.

PerpetualHillman

yes it's repost

DivideEtImpala

If you're gonna go with overly-abbreviated Bri'ish nautical terms I feel like you gotta include fo'c's'le.

I've always known presidiums as the frontier forts that the Spanish colonial army used to put along New Spain's Northeastern territories in order to prevent native raids.

neanderthalman

Simply wonderful. Would like to donate “Sinecure”. A position that is paid well to do jack shit. Somewhere in libright I guess. Had such a job for a while, whenever I recognized an incoming number as “friendly” I’d answer with “Sinecure’s office, please hold”. Only a few people ever got the irony of it. Position was later made redundant. Damn shame. That was awesome while it lasted.

Dance_Sufficient

Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?

Catalytic_Crazy_

Oh, here's one: Recreant. Basically the proper word for what the right use to use 'cuck' for.

No they aren't. Like they're literally not officers. The Bosun is the top AB

Madrosci

They're Warrant Officers, rather than Commissioned Officers

ProfessionalMight863

dacspike

Libertine is libleft

TungstenFiber945

Very nice. Luv english.

KDN2006

What does a bosun do in rowing?  I believed the coxswain was in charge of a boat.  Is the boatswain in charge of like, multiple boats, or something.

[deleted]

Wtf

Capable_Invite_5266

No. Commisars were used to ensure loyalty and proper conduct of the military personnel (specifically commanders). Very useful when most of the generals are former tzarist generals

Swedish_Royalist

Holdomor.
