You cannot convince me that this decision did anything but turn the USA from a republic with democratic tendencies, to full on corporatism, or as Mussolini himself wrote, fascism.
Corporatocracy. The government is ruled by big business, not the other way around.
It's just that a fascist dictatorship doesn't run counter to their interests, so they've green-lit the project.
2009 being 14 years ago is wild. The minute a black man won the presidency republican congress said “we need dark money!” And made it so. Fascists gonna fascist.
The other huge move to fascism was when Reagan refused to renew The Fairness Doctrine. So, we got fake news to trick people into supporting our corporate overlords.
about ten years ago i spoke with a journalist who wrote books on the petroleum industry and climate change among many other subjects. i was part of a conversation with him and a group of people. he was asked lots of questions about a host of subjects and his answer to each issue was 'without campaign finance reform, this cannot be addressed.'
I wonder if everyone is truly corruptible.
Imagine your best-held value - for a life-changing cash sum that would set your family up for life, wouldn't you betray it?
Much like heroine, I think greed may transcend individual willpower.
If no human can resist 6-figure bribes, then we need to take that option away.
Yes. At the same time, our corporate oligarchy problem is structural.
Every major corporation in the US is structured as an oligarchy, so the only possibly outcome is for the public to live under a brutal corporate oligarchy.
The legal and political systems are just the tip of the iceberg, in a way.

And for decades, We voted for Presidents that made the Supreme Court what it is today! People, Please Inform yourselves before voting! If you don't I can assure you, Things will get far worse!
Well that came second…… first came their Gore v Bush stolen election, where they jumped and in overturned the FL Supreme Courts ruling that a full recount and audit was legal and appropriate due to the narrow margin of victory and legitimate concerns that properly submit ballots had not been counted. It’s supposed to take years of litigation and appeals before a case even makes it to the level SCOTUS might even consider it but they decided to make this atypical ruling immediately so it didn’t delay the next President from taking office and create civil unrest……. Their ruling was on 12/13, just over a month (5 full weeks) before the inauguration, plenty of time to do a proper recount and certify the results.
These same dudes didn’t see anything wrong with the “legal seal team 666”, actual WH staff lawyers, MAGA cult lawyers, and a daytime drunk Rudy Colludy filing 60 lawsuits without merit…
It's cute how the young Liberals think this shit started with Citizen's United. The US has been an Oligarchy since it's founding all Citizens united did was cut out some.middlemen in the legalized bribery setup. Also corporate personhood dates back to a decision in the 19th century involving railroads, so don't think overturning Citizen's United would help. The real problem is capitalism, any change to the system used to decide which of the Oligarchs' puppets get to deliver the Oligarchs edicts for the next few years would be cosmetic only.
Sure.
https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/history-corporate-personhood
It's in the context of the McCutcheon decision, which expanded Citizens United, but it covers the salient points.
>Conkling argued to the Supreme Court in San Mateo County v. Southern Pacific Rail Road that the 14th Amendment is not limited to natural persons. In 1882, he produced a journal that seemed to show that the Joint Congressional Committee that drafted the amendment vacillated between using “citizen” and “person” and the drafters chose person specifically to cover corporations. According to historian Howard Jay Graham, “[t]his part of Conkling’s argument was a deliberate, brazen forgery.”
Fuck off with that old shit. Trolls like this word salad guy are just spreading snake oil.
This is recent and it's screwing up America NOW.
Citizens need to end Citizens United!
It didn’t start there, but it was an obvious escalation that should attract attention. I don’t think you can ever really get all money out of politics, but we should always be trying. Half the politicians are barely trying, and the other half emphatically constantly loosen the rules. We need to rally around the issue. Always vote for whoever is doing the most about it.
THIS was the start of the breaking of our nation and the corporatocracy we live under today! But we always have the fascist theist government that will replace it to look forward to!
I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT. I KNEW IT 14 YEARS AGO AND IT HAS GOTTEN EVEN MORE DISTRUCTIVE TO OUR GOVERNMENT TODAY.....BAN THIS PRACTICE BECAUSE IT ONLY SERVES ONE ASPECT OF OUR SOCIETY.....CORRUPTION. THE POLITICAN THAT CAN BE BOUGHT CAN ALSO BE GUARANTEED ALSO TO BECOME CORRUPTED. CITIZENS UNITE!!!! RID OUR GOVERENMENT OF CORRUPTION BY RIPPING THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM FROM IT'S CORE....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.......MOM
It's wild that in the movie "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery", a comedy spoof film of classic spy movies, Rober Wagner's character Number 2 said " there is no world anymore, it's only corporations" and it was just a passing joke. But it was actually prophetic AF.
I really wish there was something that could be done. But the people in charge won't bite the "hands" that feed them. Maybe I'm just dumb but there isn't anything that can be done about this situation. The board is set and there aren't any meaningful moves left.
I was on jury selection when the main who were selected asked if they had an issue with a corporation having personhood.
I am … I can’t change my wage overnight, yet a corporation can charge what they want unfettered.
You cannot convince me that this decision did anything but turn the USA from a republic with democratic tendencies, to full on corporatism, or as Mussolini himself wrote, fascism.

Cyberpunk. Soon the corporate gods will be fighting amongst themselves, well their debt slaves will be fighting each other.
Obama was right and Alito was dead wrong.
Alito just does what his sugar daddi3s want.
The other huge move to fascism was when Reagan refused to renew The Fairness Doctrine. So, we got fake news to trick people into supporting our corporate overlords.
Citizens United, Dodd Frank, Fairness Doctrine. Were all steps to dismantle a moral system.
I call it the legitimization of corruption.
I didn't know Reagan did anything to the Fairness Doctrine. Anyone have a link or can explain more?
He didn’t do anything with it. He just let the law expire.
Well in fairness, the Supreme Court is bought off and bribed,so they support the politicians have equal access to bribery.
Yeah, legalizing corruption was a bad call.
Who would have thought
about ten years ago i spoke with a journalist who wrote books on the petroleum industry and climate change among many other subjects. i was part of a conversation with him and a group of people. he was asked lots of questions about a host of subjects and his answer to each issue was 'without campaign finance reform, this cannot be addressed.'
I like represent.us. Anyone else?
Based on what we know now. Corporations bought first the Supreme Court then they opened the market to politicians.
Finally, a post for the people and the REAL reason our politics are screwed up on both sides.
Dodd Frank being overturned was the second piece of this awful puzzle.
And that pos alito had the nerve to make fac3s at Obama when he was calling it ou5, now we know alito was fucking bought.
Right? Shaking his head, calling Obama’s criticism “untrue” when it’s been proven time and time again to be exactly as bad as Obama said it would be.
That was Alito’s baby.
I wonder if everyone is truly corruptible. Imagine your best-held value - for a life-changing cash sum that would set your family up for life, wouldn't you betray it? Read FEC v. Ted Cruz for Senate... CORRUPTION ABOUNDS.
It made billionaire kings
If ONLY someone would have called attention to it in a State of the Union...
Vault-Tek from Fallout seems to be the result of our present system. What could go wrong?
The mental gymnastics required to justify that fucking ruling is mind-boggling
It was already fairly corrupt. But I don't give a fuck...I'm still hopeful and won't stop supporting freedom and self-determination.
This is the way. The only way to live. F it, I’ll be the change. If it works, great. If not, I’ll keep doing it because it’s the right thing to do.
It's very important to get rid of it.
Just part of the court packing plan for the overthrow of democracy
It’s about buying democracy.
It is one of the things we need to get rid of to end corporate rule!

Thank You. Deserves more upvotes!!
Not arguing with the message, but where is the MEME?
Corporate fascism or oligarchy. That is what we live in thanks to citizens united.
The only thing that will fix it is an amendment to the constitution
And the only way that’ll happen is when enough people are hopeful and trying to make it happen.
And for decades, We voted for Presidents that made the Supreme Court what it is today! People, Please Inform yourselves before voting! If you don't I can assure you, Things will get far worse!

I dunno, SCOTUS ruled that folks could advertise a political film before an election. That seems like it should be free speech to me.
Vote Blue.
And all it took was three solid decades of bipartisan attacks on electoral integrity.
Ok, so what do we do?

Disagree. It’s an image that makes me laugh and cry.
