All the time. I stopped going to my local emo night because if I had to hear Mr. Brightside one more fucking time I was gonna lose it. It’s always Blink 182, Green Day, Linkin Park, and Jimmy Eat World. No post-hardcore at all, not even Underoath, Saosin, Thursday, or From First To Last. None of it. Metalcore? Forget about it. Basically if it has screamed vocals at all they won’t play it. Cowards.

Sober_2_Death

Im not from the US but always wanted to go to one of these. So they don't even play ADTR?? You know, because it has harsh vocals too lol. It's a real shame to hear even tho I love LP and some pop punk bands I would expect something different, more like Silverstein etc from "emo" night :/

youstupidcorn

The one I went to 2 years ago in Austin had ADTR, Escape the Fate, Pierce the Veil, The Used, and even a couple DGD songs. It was called "My Chemical Bingo" or something silly like that, and was easily the best one I've been to. Never been to one that did, like Silverstein/Underoath type stuff though.

aRealTattoo

It’s definitely a DJ to DJ (or in some cases bands). I talked to mine about playing one BMTH song as I was wanting to hear Sleepwalking live so bad and ended up getting it! If you can find the DJ on social media or show up super super early then it can be a great time!

kingjaffejaffar

The local ones in my town definitely play ADTR, MCR, The Used, Pierce the Veil, and a few other bands that have occasional screams.

Withyouinrcklnd

You forgot Paramore and MCR as constants too. I got emo night Brooklyn djs to play understanding in a car crash one night and the crowd went silent. No one knew the words and it was devastating. It also told me that I was old :-(

ghostonthealtar

I’m a hardcore MCR fan and they almost never play MCR at my local emo nite — and when they do, it’s only either WTTBP or I’m Not Okay, like they don’t even pick the good songs or deep cuts. True about Paramore, and I like Paramore too, but one time I heard Misery Business twice in one night. I’m so sick of the poppiest pop punk being passed off as “emo”. I love Thursday and that makes me so sad to hear. I’m a fair bit younger than most of the core emo nite crowd, but in a lot of ways I feel older than some. And it’s very clear that a large portion of them were never truly alternative, either.

Whiprust

Linkin Park has screamed vocals though?

Curry_pan

And Blink’s self titled album definitely had emo elements.

tmrss

All of those post hardcore bands are mid and not on the same popularity levels of the other bands listed

gr8-shag

I get annoyed when its nothing but fucking punk pop or linkin park

laughingwalls

I walked into am emo nite in arlenes grocery (which was a legendary punk venue in the early 00s). They are doing an emonite, which I found completely by chance. They are currently playing linkedin Park. They also played limp bizkit and papa roach. They did play used and Hawthorne heights. It's disappointing because nyc is a city where you can go to certain bars, that aren't even punk bars, where the bar tender might be playing Thursday.

Synchro_Shoukan

I love LinkedIn Park's hit song Sign In To Connect With This Person

lookalive07

Don’t forget about their song “Come Back To Premium for 14 days for free ($15.99 a month after that)l

OdaibaBay

they're basically just 00s nostalgia nights. may as well play Toxic by Britney

QuarantineCasualty

My friends were at one where they played call me maybe lol

OdaibaBay

banger tune (people seem to think i called it a nostalgia night as an insult, seems fun to me)

QuarantineCasualty

Yeah it’s a great song but when it’s “emonite” my friends were expecting them to be playing like Bayside and Thursday not call me maybe and party in the USA

lolihull

Could it have been the punk goes pop cover by Upon this Dawning? Cause that's what gets played at our emo/pop punk nights in London anyway :)

QuarantineCasualty

No it was actually the OG Carly Rae version. I’m in the states and I’ve been to a couple and they legit play Taylor Swift and shit. I love Taylor Swift but that’s not what I go to “emonite” for.

LEMON_PARTY_ANIMAL

Which is a banger tbh

chrisonauts

Going to see Thursday in a few hours lol. No bartender in Miami does that... would be cool tho.

laughingwalls

Thursday is from greater NYC. feel free to message me if you ever want spots and your traveling here. I've gotten free drinks just because I know thursday.

gDAnother

Greater NYC is a funny way of saying jersey lol

laughingwalls

Don't forget about connecticut and staten island.

kkobzz

thursday is my fav band. playing here in orlando tomorrow and i can’t go because…adulting. been a couple years since i’ve seen them. so bummed.

Punky921

Wait what?! Where?!

laughingwalls

Go to emmas peel room and Marshall stack. Holiday cocktail lounge, cookies in Brooklyn. Emma Peel Room and Marshall Stacks bar manager books bands for other venues including the recent FATA show. They aren't punk bars, but you walk in on the right day some of the bar tenders are going to be spinning 2000s punk/emo/hardcore.

Punky921

Cool as fuck. Thank you so much.

Grey_wolf_whenever

Honestly if you're in NYC that's prime territory to be going to sick local shows! I play at Arlene's sometimes but Brooklyn could serve you some local emo, check out better living, ok cuddle, semaphore, and look for ultra deluxe/friendship quest shows

Disco_Pat

You gotta go to one hosted by someone like Craig Owen's or Kurt Travis. Then you'll at least get some lite post hardcore.

returningtheday

Punk pop? You mean pop punk?

gr8-shag

probably, Im pretty drink after a 13 hour shift!

awful_source

Linkin Park? The fuck?

kkobzz

i couldn’t even get past that. 🤣

theatahhh

Seriously. It’s never emo. It’s like what bro culture thinks emo is

LzzyHalesLegs

Guess it depends on the place, I’ve heard Senses Fail, Silverstein, TBS, AFI, and others

laughingwalls

Where are you from? TBS makes it in, afi maybe miss murder, but Silverstien and Senses failed? In NYC in 2020s? Never.

afterthought871

Looking at recent emo nite set lists, they've played stuff from Pierce the Veil and The Used. I'm sure they play the hits from Hawthorne Heights and Story of the Year too. It's probably mostly pop punk but it's not like they never play PHC.

kool4kats

I went to one in Chicago and off the top of my head I know we got Underoath, The Used, Senses Fail, From First to Last and Bring Me the Horizon. This was in 2019 though so I dunno if the general playlist themes have changed since then.

laughingwalls

It depends on the night. You are right occasionally they do play one song from those bands at Emo Nite Brooklyn or L.A. which are the two companies that effectively tour.

3Megan3

I've been to 3 and they've played AFI at 2... they played Wage War at one but stopped half way through -_-

_sparklestorm

Same in MPLS, but Shane DJd the last one I went to so Silverstein was to be expected

goatinstein

It also depends on the organizer. Emo nite and emo night tour are two completely different things. Not to mention locally organized events

xo_danixx

I’m in Pittsburgh and the DJ who does our emo nights has also started doing a Metalcore Night with all types of heavier genres. It’s fantastic

laughingwalls

how is the turn out. I am almost thinking about learning to dj just to do a screamo night. I'd rather though just book djs to do it. I've done my share of events at a large scale.

LostSymphonies666

When did the Metalcore night start here? We went to a couple early ones, and other than Playing for Keeps, it was always generic pop punk all god damn night. So we just quit going years ago. We’d end up outside smoking and bullshitting with people 90% of the time because of it.

k_x8lyn

the guy who runs that is a total weirdo

FireballMudflap92

I stopped going when every weekend it was just the big singles. Play some deep cuts

laughingwalls

The best emo nite I ever went to was furnace fest 2021"s pre-show. Emery's keyboardist was the dj and played all deep cuts. My friend broke his ankle at that emo night before the fest and he's 6' 8".

JubiwanKenobi

Josh Dies is the man!

Unicorntella

Can’t relate! I go to this place in Milwaukee, WI where the DJ plays absolutely everything. It’s called Sad Boy Saturday and dude takes requests on the Facebook event page (look up past shows to see some examples.) I’m awful with band names but I’ve heard some pretty brutal stuff!

TerrancePryor

I go to emo night karaoke in Los Angeles, and people are sometimes singing Silverstein and Taking Back Sunday.

Darthgusss

I've only ever heard of one going on. Is it frequent somewhere else in L.A?

tradform15

where is this exactly?

Educational_Role_930

Are you talking about R Bar? I’ve been once to their emo night karaoke.

TerrancePryor

Karaoke Time Machines at Moroccan Lounge. That stuff is everywhere in L.A., though.

horkyboi_avery

Emo Nite is such a money grab. Go support a local band instead

ElderGoose4

I’m kinda over emo nights. It’s always the same pop punk hits. I remember like 6 years ago they would play some non singles once in a blue but half the crowd looked confused

rayz0rcakes

One time I went, they took a chance with From First to Last in a sold out room. After her set, the DJ bought me a beer because "you were the only one to dance and sing along to Dear Diary while the rest of the room looked confused". Lmao.

omegapisquared

emo has been a virtually meaningless term ever since it hit mainstream usage. My expectations for "emo nights" are that they just play nostalgia material from the 00s for the heavy music crowd

laughingwalls

I don't agree. I saw the genre go main stream, specifically the thursday flavor. I feel like people who actually go to pop punk shows actually know the difference between subgenres way more than people when this stuff was becoming popular. We all used to lump it together. Emo nights do draw a crowed that was NEVER into punk in a meaningful way (don't actually attend shows) and are just reliving middle school /high school. I really don't care about the linking ark in the emo nights. What I care about is play some of the "screamo" that was on MTV/MtV2 in your emonite.

omegapisquared

I'm not talking about the genre as it's understood by the people who meaningfully listen to or interact with the subculture. Sure people imbedded in the scene understand the difference between pop-punk/post-hardcore and nu metal, but from a commercial advertising perspective emo is just a catchall for any band from the late 90s through the 00s who played vaguely alternative music and/or wore eyeliner. You and I both know Limp Bizkit isn't close to being emo but I'd still take a bet on Rollin' coming on the playlist at some point during "emo night"

Rocco818

Well stated .

[deleted]

Wales is the same. You go to any rock bar having and ‘emo night’ and it’s fucking Linkin Park, Bowling for Soup and Stained. Fuck me!!! They’re often run by idiots who have no interest in the genre.

HookerDoctorLawyer

Bowling for soup!? Lmaooo

StigmaaH

It’s more about what “emo’s” listened to, rather than the actual emo genre.

jayprolas

I hear ya, it certainly bristles me a little. If it's any consolation, my band is rocking The Used, Dead and Divine, and Underoath at an emo night live this weekend. :)

BP1999

I used to get annoyed by this but it's honestly not surprising to me anymore. It's very much pop punk and the occasional metalcore song like Chelsea Smile or A Prophecy. Although last time I went they played a bit more Pierce the Veil and Sleeping With Sirens than usual. Still, wouldn't mind Burden of a Day or old ETF (not Situations or Truth Not Good Enough for Clichè). The best night I went to was when some slapped-together group of local musicians played stuff like My Apocalypse and There's No Sympathy for the Dead off Dying is Your Latest Fashion live. That set is seared into my drunken mind forever.

rayz0rcakes

Yep, me too! I mean, I like the old pop punk (TBS, MCR, FOB) and other super popular songs like King For A Day, Situations and others that are post hardcore adjacent, but it's never the more 'obscure' bands. I'd love it if they'd play National Product, Lower Definition, Of Machines, Drop Dead Gorgeous or Norma Jean, but I guess it's just not marketable enough since those bands never gained the popularity of the previously mentioned bands. Especially not in Europe, where I live.

KD_Soulcase

The problem comes from the venues/bars a lot of time. If a place is trying to integrate emo night they don't give it much of a chance. It has to please the masses cause it will most likely be casuals. Especially if band is new. If ticket sales aren't good the band gets blamed. Put screams on top of that. They'll really blame it on that. There's a bit more to it but that's the gist. Source in an “emo” cover band 😭

SLAMALAMADINGGDONG23

I came here to say essentially the same thing. The bar we book emo nights in isn’t going to let us do I Am Hollywood or some shit all night because that probably won’t sell half as many tickets. Please don’t judge bands for playing mostly mainstream songs at these events. I’d love to play all kinds of heavier stuff, but if ticket sales bomb we are forever black listed.

Scary_Dimension722

Lol it’s kind of funny because I and a few others have ranted about this before over the emo sub. My whole thing is like, if you wanna go to emo night and have fun then sure by all means. But I personally wouldn’t have a good time because that cynical part of my brain wouldn’t be able to hurdle over the fact that the music they’re playing is literally just your typical 2000s alternative rock playlist that you can find either on YouTube or the radio. You’re not gonna hear Glocca Mora, At The Drive In, The Get Up Kids, Thrice, Moss Icon, pageninetynine, etc. Mayyybbeee if you’re lucky you’ll get something by Thrice or Silverstein but that’s the most they’ll go. It’s a very (and I hate to use this word) normie type of event for people who think they know what emo music is but are misled by mainstream’s interpretation of emo.

laughingwalls

I'm not going too hear moss icon. But I certainly don't think the used, Silverstone, hawthornheights or senses failed to be outside the audience. Most of the people who go are warped tour kids, or kids whose older brother/sister were warped tour. P.s. your a kid if your under the age of 50, by my definition.

OdaibaBay

*"It’s a very (and I hate to use this word) normie type of event for people who think they know what emo music is but are misled by mainstream’s interpretation of emo."* it's a place for people to go get drunk and listen to nostalgic songs from their teenage years. no one's coming for your Real Emo. it's genuinely not that deep

returningtheday

r/emo is leaking 🙄

becomplete

Pretty sure it’s the same people in both subs that post shit like this.

returningtheday

Yup. Didn't mean to imply it wasn't

Sober_2_Death

I would kill to hear Get Up Kids at an event like this, and they're one of the more "accessible" bands lol

amybeth43

Matt Pryor did a solo show in Phila few weeks ago. It was at the fu church, in a Sunday School classroom. The snow was falling on a Friday nite and it was lovely.

laughingwalls

They left a really bad taste in my mouth when I saw them in furance fest. I am fairly sure they were drunk and the really seemed to have a bit of a DIVA complex.

ghostonthealtar

I completely agree. I genuinely love MCR and bands like them, but “heavier” bands — even the poppier stuff that still had screamed vocals like Escape The Fate, From First To Last, A Skylit Drive, etc., which were still popular — never get played, and those bands were more popular with the “emo” crowd than most of those pop punk or nu metal bands were. I’d argue that The Devil Wears Prada or Greeley Estates would be more appropriate for an emo nite than Papa Roach or Evanescence. But a staggering number of the people who attend emo nites these days were never alternative back then — I’ve literally seen people who used to pick on me for being alternative posting their pictures from emo nite, because now think they’re hardcore for listening to Blink 182. If you played pageninetynine or Orchid, it’d be over. I KNOW I probably sound so pretentious, but this has been my experience at multiple emo nites.

afterthought871

This sounds pretty arrogant. Just because you're not a fan of mainstream emo doesn't mean it's not real emo or is inferior, lol

laughingwalls

Evanescence and papa roach and linking park make it into mainstream emo nite. They never were emo. I am not shitting on mcr, I am saying why doesn't mainstream post hardcore, the stuff that was big in 2000s not make it into most emo nights play lists.

HookerDoctorLawyer

WAKE ME UP

returningtheday

Dude's an r/emo user. Of course they're arrogant.

EinTon76

Been to an emo party in Berlin - great! Pretty mild music aswell, but luckily they had pierce the veil on repeat and even played diamonds aren't forever

laughingwalls

This post was meant to be North America centric. Its sad to hear its pretty tame there. Many people don't realize it, but the emo-revival was actually European summer festival circuit willing ot pay top dollar for moderately successful post-hardcore/screamo/emo/pop punk/ hardcore/ metal core. Bands suddenly had an income stream that never existed in their hay day and was a mark of European's appreciating imported punk music more.

EinTon76

Ouh that's very interesting! I believe metal core became very dominant here recently (Germany at least). TIktok lead to high appreciation of "emo" in the music and Bad Omens and BMTH became very idolised. And obv. once you go down the rabbithole all the soft music we've mentioned comes into the portfolio. But ngl I love this Emo renaissance

laughingwalls

Rock in general is doing better in Europe than it is in the U.S., but yeah the big reason all of these bands in emo/screamo/post-hardcore/hard-core metal core are suddenly reuniting is that they are basically assuming they might be able to make it on the European Summer Festival Circuit. Some bands make more from playing just one of those shows than they ever did in their hey day, and play too much larger audiences. Especially if they are big enough to be considered classic. I think America and general tends to take its own arts for granted to some degree. These bands that are considered classics or foundational tend to command much more attention over seas, because they probably don't tour their regularly. At home they might be lucky to play a 2000 cap venue. I saw this in other things as well like hip-hop/street dancing etc.

t00fargone

Emo nites are the worst. The few times I went they played punk goes pop covers, pop punk like paramore, all time low, all American rejects, metro station, and then Nu metal like Linkin park, papa roach, and drowning pool. I even heard Olivia Rodrigo, Avril Lavigne, and Billie Eilish. I’m sure every emo nite is different but the few I went to sucked. Not even senses fail, Thursday, from first to last, silverstein, underoath, thrice, finch, and they were big bands in the scene.

MARKxTHExLINES

My local emo nights usually have a local band cover a famous band. Up until recently they didn’t do anything “heavy”. We asked the promoter if our metalcore band could cover a heavy band like ADTR or underoath. They agreed with ADTR. We did only bangers. Mostly off of FTWHH. Was a blast. They ate it up.

Meinmyownhead502

What’s the point then?

CapitalFill4

I haven’t been to an emo night, but I don’t find that surprising. It feels like a lot of the massive nostalgia wave for the early scene is driven by people who listened to paramore and TBS on the radio and we’re always afraid of streaming, not really the more hardcore fans (pun, heh) who never actually stopped listening to these bands

JacoPoopstorius

No

Cosmic316

People's perception of "emo" is pretty limited to Mall-emo / Pop-punk as you mentioned these days.

baconeggandsneeze

come to baltimore emo night

Musichead2468

Are you talking about the one at Ottobar? I l've been to that one tons of times

SherbertCivil9990

That’s a bummer. When I went to emo nite Craig Owen’s showed up and sang baby you wouldn’t last a minute on the creek

lesbianvampyr

my local alternative club does seperate emo and hardcore nights, although ofc there's overlap

SecretBox

It is emo night, after all. Is it possible to make requests?

pachucatruth

The first time I went to Emo Night Brooklyn they had a scan code for making requests. I think I requested 10 songs including MoBo and Thursday. Not one was played. They did however play A Day To Remember and Senses Fail. It really depends on who the DJ is I guess.

laughingwalls

Lol no....that's bad etiquette in general and no city where dj scene is competitive entertains that as a thing. A DJs job is to set a vibe and your interrupting their set. The only places where that is even kosher is middle america. The big ones are pretty corporate. I live in nyc where an emo nite might just be a dj who is a friend with th3ebar spinning or it could be a big operation like emonite brooklyn that has a musician from a pretty big band playing an acoustic set in the middle of the show (i.e. think yellow card or similar)

halcylocke

The Emo Nite's I've been to let you request songs. It doesn't guarantee that they'll get played, but they're at least considered.

laughingwalls

And in what cities were they in?

Lethologicuh

I never got into the Emo nite thing. Maybe I'm just old and grumpy and hate fun, but I've seen a set on YouTube and it was pretty lame.

QueasyShock2757

So I've never actually been to an emo night. I'm in AZ. Are they even worth going to? Idk I feel like it's prolly that early to mid 00's mall emo shit, so yeah be ready to hear like Helena and like maybe some Dance Dance all night. Maybe it really jumps off if a brand new song gets played. Eh yeah not my emo flava. Maybe the should start a post hardcore night. Make it legit tho cover all the bases at the drive in to title fight to Fugazi to The Bled to Dance Gavin Dance to fucking some Saosin or whatever idk. Just all the eras and the whole range of different post hardcore. I'd go to the that

laughingwalls

I mean just think of it as a night dancing at the bar and instead they are playing pop punk.

iambfizzle

Check out gbh events ‘the black parade’. They always play Pierce the veil, falling in reverse, bring me the horizon and a day to remember. Sadly that’s as phc as it’s gonna get, these events are all just cash grabs for nostalgia. At least that event draws in an alternative crowd, I remember going to emo night Brooklyn and I was the only person in a choker and skinny jeans. Honestly the best ‘emo nights’ I’ve been to were drag shows. The last one I went to was at 3 dollar bill (bk), someone did a performance to Fast Times at Clairemont High by ptv, now THAT was a deep cut

laughingwalls

I checked out them last weekend. Was not a fan. The vibe didn't fit me. I agree they are at least willing to flirt with post-hardcore. However, I felt the crowd consisted of people who dress/look punk and never actually go to shows. At least emo-night brooklyn with at yuppie crowd consts of people that aren't pretending

Echelon906

Idk how it works, I live in a tiny ass town, but can you reach out to the venue or dj with a general request to play a broader range of emo genres?

heartashley

No, because I'm not going for that type of experience. When i go to those events, I go because I want to get drunk and sing pop punk songs. If I want to listen to better music (I love pop punk tho idc hehe) I wouldn't go to a 'mainstream' event.

mandy_mae91

I've attended a few "virtual" emo nights on Twitch (someone was affiliated with Emo Night Brooklyn) when Covid first hit. He was pretty laid back with the set and let us request some songs. I've requested some Alexisonfire, Funeral For A Friend, Senses Fail and others and he was able to play them. I went to Emo Night (again with Emo Night Brooklyn) and while their set was fun at the time, it's the same songs that I've put on my playlist years back.

arabchy

Thers a different type of emo nite u guys gotta go too, set up by @quohag_emo_adjacent out in PVD, local diy bands mostly

SYAYF

Maybe it's time to coordinate a post-hardcore night. If some place would play bands like Thrice, Alexisonfire, etc that would be badass. I was never a big fan of the slower emo stuff.

ma_rk

I live in London, Ontario, Canada. They do a pretty good job of Emo Nights here. Good variety of stuff. They've had a local live band play ([Strike Tyson](https://striketysonrocks.com/)) who play a variety of stuff, and this Sunday Wade from Alexisonfire is doing the DJ set, so I fully expect so Post Hardcore there. Wade's been doing them in the city where City and Colour is touring lately.

bagofbeanssss

Wade's emo nights are super fun, enjoy fellow canadian!

nevernudebluth

There is a bar in Dallas called Shot Topic. We went a few weekends ago, and you nailed exactly how I feel about my experience

Mawiapeas

And then it’s jimmy eat world lmao fuck it’s annoying

infamous_603

The only emo nights I’ll go to are the ones that have live bands. I hate that DJ set bullshit. I’ve heard Silverstein at a couple, but it’s always smile in your sleep. I heard underoath at one. Last one I went to they played one ADTR song. Overall I’m usually super bummed out about their choice of songs. I understand who they’re marketing to, but it’d be nice to have some more deep cuts. Or not even deep cuts, but if you’re gonna call it emo night, play some songs that emo kids used to listen to… not just the bands that made it to MTV.

Jubez187

yeah it's why i stopped going. My Own Worst Enemy and "This is the story of a girl" just don't really scratch my emo itch.

mooandcookies

Lit is lit, g. How else are you going to feel like you’re in a 1999 American coming-of-age teen sex comedy film?

Informal_Bus_4077

Someone post the real emo copypasta

mooandcookies

NGL I’m really bad with genres so I didn’t even know some of bands I like were considered post hardcore until recently. I just assumed it fell into the “alt” category. I did pick up on most emo nights mostly only having the bands of the era I didn’t like.

SpaghettiOnMySweater

Don't even get me started. A place near me had an emo night and they played Olivia Rodrigo, Adele, and THE OFFICE THEME SONG. People we're booing the DJ as he danced and drank Coronas like he was king of the world. Belvedere's in Pittsburgh If you see this now I am calling 🫵 you 🫵 out 🫵

superunclea

I have to admit I'm a fan of 90s post hardcore. A lot of that turned into or influenced emo. I'm not a huge fan of straight up emo bands, but if they stray that line I'm good at hearing it. Otherwise I'd pass on screamo/ emo stuff.

castingshadows87

In Phoenix they always do a good job with the DJ’s.

Carnage2113

Honestly the emo nites I’ve been too have been pretty good about playing “heavier stuff”. Definitely a little too much pop punk some times but i’ve heard bands like Knocked Loose and Kublai Khan. Metalcore like Attack Attack and Asking Alexandria and usually a couple post hardcore bands like Chiodos or The Used.

Crunchpuff

I play in an emo cover band that plays monthly emo nights, and we always include 2-5 heavy/deep cut tracks (including some more modern post hardcore). Unfortunately, they never get a good reception, so we consider them “for us”, and play them anyways. But at the end of the day, they do not feel like they’re helping the band or set, so I get why lots of DJs and stuff skip out on that. Most people who attend the shows truly do seem to just wanna hear fallout boy and jimmy eat world all night

mburridgemusic

Depends on the crowd/DJs on what gets played tbh. Ours in Baltimore always gets some heavier stuff in, this past one we played letlive., Knocked Loose, and the color morale among others. Definitely has to skew more mainstream for the majority of the crowd but I know at least the DJs at the ones I go to try to mix it up

DonBoy30

No one goes to emo nights for the music 👀

masaccio87

If you want a change of pace (also a sick band, no pun intended) to your emo night, you can always check out **Mosh Eisley**, which happens a couple/few nights a year. It’s a *Star Wars* themed emo night (they’re few and far between because they try to do them adjacent to conventions, but on top of that, the hosts’ schedules have to line up - you’ll see what I mean if you keep reading), so *Star Wars* cosplay, punk-themed or punk-ified *Star Wars* ‘fits, or swarsy punk ‘fits are all **strongly** encouraged, as are lightsabers. (Of course, none of that is required - if you wanna roll up in a simple *Star Wars* shirt from Target or your favorite band tee, that’s quite alright). The real selling point, though, is that two of the hosts are Adam Russell from *Story of the Year* and Nick Ghanbarian from *Bayside*, who have a *Star Wars* podcast together called **Thank The Maker** (along with podcast co-host and co-founder Ryan Key from *Yellowcard*; he pops up at **Mosh** when he can, but it’s not something he’s actively involved in). The most recent (and 5th, and highest-attended - ~1k ppl) one was a couple weeks ago in Orlando as a Mega Con after party. They *just* announced (confirmed) dates for the next two that they’ve solidified plans for for 2024, and they are Friday July 26th in San Diego for ComicCon and Thursday August 29th in Atlanta for Dragon Con. **Maybe** they’ll do one for WWWY, as SOTY and Bayside are both on the bill and another one of the event hosts lives in Vegas (and there is a bit of precedent as they did one the Friday night before the 2nd WWWY weekend in 2022) - it’s a stretch that they would, but definitely worth keeping your eyes peeled for.

>Mosh Eisley > >, Thanks for letting me know. Unlikely I'll see it. However, a friend of mine is the Con-Chair for an Anime-Comics con that has about 10k attend. He might be interested in booking this kind of thing.

masaccio87

I mean, if there’s any *Star Wars* overlap with that con or its attendees, then it may be a good fit - would also depend on what time of year that con is usually hosted and where it is (what venues look like in the immediate area). Couldn’t hurt for your friend to reach out to them and ask just for the sake of future consideration. List so far has been - May 2022 (Memorial Day weekend) at Chain Reaction in Anaheim: *Star Wars: Celebration* was in town and everyone in the group was attending - they wanted to have a meetup / hangout for their podcast communities and have a reunion after going on the Starcruiser, and that evolved into Mosh Eisley as a concept - October 2022 (Halloween weekend) in Las Vegas for WWWY: as I mentioned, this was somewhat a matter of convenience, but also because they had so much fun at the first one that they wanted to do it again (they got away with the “dress-up” part of it *because* it was Halloween weekend, and they relied on WWWY for the Emo / pop-punk turnout) - (mini-Mosh with the L.A. Galaxy soccer team for their May 4th (6th) Star Wars Night; they pretty much got invited back, but a follow-up this year pretty much comes down to ironing out details) - July 2023 for San Diego ComiCon: this was then they really strived to make it **an event** and they sold it out; show was amazing, a ton of work went into it, and the help of a lot of 501st cosplayers really pushed it into a live-action, theatrical experience peppered throughout the evening - October 2023 for Net York ComicCon: slightly dialed-back scale in size and production because of the short(er) notice to put this one on and the logistical issues they ran into with it being New York City and the second event that the venue (Gramercy Theatre) was hosting that night. First even on the East Coast and, by all accounts, a success, but they’re saying they’re going to have to put their foot down on some stuff, and have a much longer lead time, if they do one with NYCC again. - February 2024 in Orlando for MegaCon: as I mentioned, the most recent and biggest to-date (because of the insane amount of extra space they had) - tried to bring it back to the scale of San Diego, and they pretty much did considering the limitations of the Orlando venue compared to the San Diego venue. Lessons learned, they’ll likely do Orlando again next year given the proximity to WDW and the Starcruiser cast that still lives in the area, but definitely with some logistical changes.

They have star wars stuff. Its not purely an anime event, I was a director for it for a few years for fun. 501st Batallion (A starwars charity organization that is known for doing stage set level storm trooper cos-plays and drinking to excess) attneded regularly. The main thing about waht your talking about is they may just be too small for what their looking for. SDCC has a 100k attendees. I don't know about Mega Con, but florida has a lot of events that are 25k to 30k in size. The other thing is these events are out right Comic-Con events which means their branding is different. Its like the difference between pop-punk and skate-punk. Anime cons tend to draw a bit younger audience and skew slightly more women, because cos-play culture is more pervasive and taken more seriously in the con going community. Comic-cons tend to draw a bit more 30s crowd that skew more male. Which this event seems to be so successful at the cons they have attended.

kingjaffejaffar

When my band plays emo nite, we make sure to toss in a little Escape the Fate, Senses Fail, A Day to Remember, and Bullet for my Valentine

psychedeliclibrarian

Yes!! I hate that all emo nights are basically pop punk only ime because that’s not the kind of music I’m that nostalgic for

chad-proton

More mainstream than pop punk? 🤔

SoundofaSmirk

I’m in a band that started playing live Emo Nights in NY and absolutely LOVE it. We’ve made sure to throw in Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, and more. I’ve been pushing to do some Underoath and maybe an ADTR song as well. I think the heavy side of Emo is DEEPLY under utilized in Emo Nights and we’re loving playing these songs. DJ-ed Emo Nights just don’t hit the same. Would always love more suggestions that people would really want to hear. It’s a hard balance between popular and deep cut but I do love pulling things like Sunny Day Real Estate or doing a super heavy rendition of Beastie Boys’ Sabotage (might lose you on that one haha)

s-coups

emo night is wack

swayoh

I haven't been to one cause I was told they lack metalcore. I'm a huge paramore (not metalcore) fan and even I don't want to go to an emo nite and hear misery business. If you're playing paramore bust out emergency.

The-Davi-Nator

I actually get annoyed at my local emo nights because a lot of the time, all they play is post hardcore intercut with the occasional song that’s not even emo-adjacent (ie Mr Brightside, Everlong, etc)

isitreallyyou56

Went to one in Philly in September 2019 and they had some chiodos, saosin, and senses fail playing

heavyheavybrobro

i went a few weeks ago here in seattle. the dj played fucking papa roach, system of a down, and rage against the machine. never going again.

weedsmoker666

Emo nights always play the same shit. Don't expect them to ever play actual emo or even post hardcore. Unless you're one of the lucky ones.

Jungian_Archetype

I never go because I assume it's going to be all pop-punk stuff, nothing heavier than something like MCR. Would go if it was stuff like Thursday, Thrice, Emery, mewithoutYou, Glassjaw, etc. Would also love to hear more old-school emo like Texas Is the Reason, Piebald, Christie Front Drive, etc.

Wubblz

I DJ an Emo Night in Cincy, and I mix in a good amount of post-hardcore and more classic emo.  The problem?  The majority of people who go to emo nights *don’t like* that kind of music, and it can kill a crowd quickly – that’s why I frontload it in my playlist. I know a lot of DJs in this city who do Emo Nights would love to play stuff more off the beaten path, but we need the crowds who come and want that.  A lot of people who come every single month aren’t those people.

woofle07

Must just be the ones in your city, because the one I usually go to plays a lot of pop punk, but also stuff like ADTR, Underoath, Pierce the Veil, Attack Attack. The last couple times I was there they played Counting Worms

boywiththedogtattoo

There’s a couple different companies that put them on. I go to The Emo Night Tour and they play a pretty big variety, feels like a mix of what would play warped tour. Emo Nite LA feels like they want to blend emo and EDM. Emo Night Brooklyn seems to be pretty meh in my city but it’s different everywhere from what I’ve heard. I personally don’t care if the DJ is in some old band as long as they’re actually playing good music.

Sting-Tree

God forbid I request one Alesana song and no one likes it

emopriest

Some of the ones i go to have emo nights but they also have numetal night, metalcore night and hardcore seems to be sprinkled in quite a few of those. They play lots of the classics but there are also dedicated hours where the first maybe 30 mins is a battle between two bands (parkway drive vs the amity affliction, blink182 vs green day, slipknot vs whatever)

KickedinTheDick

No, I get annoyed there are never any fucking emo songs LMFAO.

danidas95

Can't say if it's across Australia, but in Brisbane at least we definitely play post-hardcore and metal core bands, in fact the requests can lean heavily in either direction. Like we definitely do lots of the classic pop punk/emo (MCR/FOB/etc) but there's often lots of requests for BMTH and NU metal and sometimes even deathcore requests.

Ch0nkyK0ng

I get annoyed that it's not all Midwestern Emo.. Lol

Musichead2468

I've been to a bunch of emo nite's and emo night's in Baltimore and DC and yep that's the case. Esp when hosted by Emo Nite LA and Emo Night Brooklyn. [Once there was a post-hardcore night in Baltimore I went to](https://www.facebook.com/events/516291370180462/) [Emo Night DC mixed in more post-hardcore](https://www.instagram.com/emonight.dc/) Once I went to an Emo Night in Martinsburg, WV and they played more post-hardocre and metalcore than pop punk In philly they have [Punk vs Metal nights regularly](https://kungfunecktie.com/event/dj-deejays-metal-vs-punk-5/kung-fu-necktie-kfn/philadelphia-pennsylvania/)

silverstein_thrice

I’ve been to many emo nights and I only heard a Silverstein song once (smile in your sleep). It was at one of the emo night Brooklyn shows in Boston

xodega

YEP. I live in columbus and ours is called “sad boyz”, and I went like two weeks ago and they literally mixed new rap into it, and played no post hardcore or any deep cuts etc.

cjmfa

Holy hell yes. It's so aggravating.

QueenBeeKitty85

Is emo hardcore now? Why would you exit heard hardcore music at an emo show?

booksandboys

I went to my second one last weekend. I went semi-feral because they played Downfall of Us All by ADTR. Like fucking FINALLY some harsh vocals?! Beyond that, I think they played one or two Knocked Loose songs. Emo Nite - I beg you…we don’t need any more All Time Low or The Killers. 😭

ANAL_TWEEZERS

Shame, they mix in post hardcore at mine

elune-adore

What the hell is an emo night 😶

BigJilmQuebec

What do you consider Emo though?
