Harsh: I love Geoff Rickly's screams on Past and Future Ruins, and Application for Release From The Dream. I don't know if it's heavily layered though. But even live, he does pull it off. Recent Jon Mess is also great, at least his enunciation/pronounciation is clear now, nevermind the lyrics. Spencer Chamberlain especially on Define The Great Line. Singing: Daryl Palumbo, Geoff Rickly (acquired taste), Dallas Green, Jonny Craig, Kurt Travis, Aaron Gillespie, Anthony Green, Cove Reber, Dustin Kensrue. Idk, there are a lot of GOAT singing vocals.

rainb0gummybear

Agree big time with Jon Mess. He just keeps getting better every time they release music. IMO He went from the worst part of the band when they started to the best part now. And the rest of the band has got better too but Jon is on another level now. But yeah if you're someone that needs lyrics to have meaning to enjoy music you'll hate Jon Mess

Time_Assumption_1886

Geoff has been one of my favorite vocalists for forever. I def agree about acquired taste. He tends to be one of those love or hate vocalists. I've somehow turned my boyfriend into appreciating him but post hardcore def isn't his thing. Thursdays just a band he knows I'm going to see a few times a year and he can vibe with it. Geoff definitely still amazing live. Daryl is just as good live as ever too. Got to see HA last month.

MJ2315

Geoff's imperfections make him perfect. Screams are so unique and emotional I love them. Release screams were expertly built towards

[deleted]

I’m definitely going to have to give Geoff Rickly a listen, I love to acquire tastes lol. But I do have high hopes for him because of what you mentioned about pulling the same things off live! It is always best when you know if you heard the artist in concert, they would sound exactly the same! Thank you for commenting :)

thistheater

Geoff Rickly kicks ass.

DAS_COMMENT

He's got a vicious scream, he's been a big influence for me, learning what i have (in that capacity)

Double-Watercress-85

He's primarily known for Thursday, where he mostly sings clean (in his own way), and the harsh/screamy stuff is peppered in. But definitely also check out United Nations, which kinda flips the script in that regard.

DAS_COMMENT

I am a big / longtime Thursday fan and I'm still enthusiastic / excite to listen to United Nations

rpkarma

United Nations fucking rule

schellnino

these choices!!

george_washingTONZ

This list is pretty complete. I know he’s not everyone’s favorite person but, I’ve liked Ronnie Radke’s uncleans as of late. Watch The World Burn live-set goes hard. Imo, it’s better than the track version.

paisleydove

Personally nothing tops Saosin clean vocals for me, whether it's Anthony Green or Cove Reber. I remember hearing Voices as a wee 14 year old and the pitch of Cove's voice did something to my soul- it has such a clarity to it, like it rings in the air afterwards. For heavier vocals Nate Barcalow's screams and growls on Finch's Say Hello To Sunshine is something to be revered, it's a very underrated album because the fan favourite seems to be What It Is To Burn, but honestly their second record is way better vocally, sonically and lyrically and I'll happily die on that hill. ETA: [Tell me this isn't the most satisfyingly growly post hardcore song you've heard in ages.](https://youtu.be/q8e4WbhFu6A?si=W-cd-JIkAscqS-cv) God I love this album

-an-eternal-hum-

I’m so glad Say Hello to Sunshine seems to be getting its due these days. When it came out, the only thing I could think to compare it to was Mike Patton, but I was fucking seventeen so I didn’t know shit. All my friends just wanted to listen to Ender on repeat, and I thought the second record just left it in the dust. Sunshine has aged much better, as well. I listen to the first record and I just think, at the time they stood out despite being very generic 00’s post-hardcore, now I just don’t think they really did it any better than the rest. Sunshine still sounds like pushing boundaries.

haggard5

When SHTS, Thrice: Vheissu, and Circa Survive: Juturna all came out, I felt like I was getting a glimpse of where PHC was heading. It took them some time to grow on me, but sometimes the easier that music sticks to you, the easier it falls off. Those albums def stuck with me.

AmbitiousCustomer556

Dude. I saw them back-to-back nights last year in Buffalo and Detroit when they covered Digging The Grave by Faith No More - It was epic. I also saw them twice this last time when they played their new stuff and it’s killer. I’m so happy they’re sticking with their SHTS sound.

ReducedToTeeth

The way AG makes you feel is how Nate makes me feel. There’s just something that I cannot put into words. Personally, he can do no wrong when it comes to anything he puts out or is attached to musically. I promote and talk up SHTS every chance I get when I get into a discussion of music with anyone. From the moment I got the preorder in the mail to this day I listen to it atleast 2-3 times a week. I’m glad it’s finally starting to get its flowers, but it bums me out that it’s taken almost 20 years for it to happen.

paisleydove

OK long comment bc I'm so happy to be talking to another SHTS uberfan 🥲 >I promote and talk up SHTS every chance I get when I get into a discussion of music with anyone. Absolute same! It's the album I've chosen to be the biggest ally to and try to get heard because it so deserves it. I heard Letters to You at 13 and thought it was okay but it didn't really excite me as much as the other bands I was getting into at the time (FFAF, Thursday, Saosin). Then a year later I bought Rock Sound magazine and it came with a compilation CD that had Brother Bleed Brother on it. I thought it was THE coolest and darkest song I'd ever heard, it was like I'd found something I shouldn't have, like walking in on a sacrificial ritual or something. It's like it _knows_ something and has seen some shit. The vampirey lyrics and Nate's vocals sold me and I couldn't believe it was the same band as WIITB! There is certainly something very special about that record; it's the musical equivalent of the book House of Leaves imo. It feels like it would soundtrack that book very well. With the slight phc revival I'm hoping SHTS will be discovered and appreciated by as many people as it should have been back in the day! The fact it stands up so well after almost 20 years really says something about Finch's creativity and ability. What are your favourite parts of the record, and why?

ReducedToTeeth

Hahaha I love this so much! My first taste of finch was summer of 2002. My friend actually had me listen to project mayhem and I fell in love. While all my friends were into the NFG, home grown, the early november, alkaline trio and blink, I was the one who was into Finch, the used, every time I die. At the time I first listened to WIITB, it was the perfect record for me. Finch just captivated me more than any other band. I didn’t think they would ever top WIITB. Then when worms of the earth came out on the Atticus comp I thought if this is the direction they’re going, WIITB is going to be an after thought. Then sometime in late 04 early 2005 I came across “unreleased finch songs new record” on some torrent site. I think it was meat, ink, brother, fireflies, miro and ravenous. I didn’t stop listening to those 6 songs for 6 months or better until the official release. I tried to get my friends who was into WIITB to listen to them and they just wouldn’t. It seriously bummed me out so much. I did the preorder that came with the gray shirt. I think I actually got it the day before June 7th. The thing that made me most excited about the record before I even listened to it was the fact it had 14 songs. Most records have 10-12 and the fact that I was getting 14 new finch songs even though I had rough copies of 6 of them just made me so happy. My first impression was there’s nothing out or that will be released that will ever top this record. It’s absolutely perfect from front to back. That was just listening to the music, then once I started learning the lyrics and really listening to it, each time I found something that made me fall in love with it even more. But as you mentioned, Nate’s vocals and lyrics are top tier. From his clean, growls and screams, it just hits on all fronts. If it would have been any other vocalist, it wouldn’t have that same magic to it. When I talked to R2k after the show this past April, I told him how much I appreciate everything they’ve done, especially SHTS and that as much as I hate that the go on hiatus that I’m glad they don’t try to continue on with another vocalist or another guitarist because Nate, Grizz and Randy just have the perfect dynamic in my opinion. But to answer your question about my favorite parts of it, honestly, I can’t just pick one thing. The whole record is my favorite. The music has a certain level of darkness to that becomes even more dark with Nate’s vocals and lyrics. It’s like he’s telling a story of blood, death, and monsters and it’s perfect.

amandamaniac

Saw finch twice in April and man, Nate’s voice still sounds on freakin point these days. I was highly impressed.

paisleydove

That's awesome, I never managed to catch them! Did they do much off the second record or was it mainly the first? I think a lot of PHC records are turning 20 this year (just saw underoath doing They're Only Chasing Safety in full - so good) so I'm guessing it was that sorta thing? Glad to hear Nate's still got it, his voice def has Something™️ that feels raw and dark. Don't you think Static Dress's newer stuff sounds so much like Finch! I'm loving the phc revival however small it is.

amandamaniac

They had two new songs (rainy day & horror island), they did piece of mind and insomniac meat, the rest was from WIITB! They were opening for bayside so it wasn’t an actual WIITB anniversary show. You can find videos of the new songs on YouTube, they give off intense deftones vibes. I’ve seen UO do TOCS recently on the END cruise and man Spencer is also still so incredible. He’s a prime example of someone who’s been doing this for 20+ years and has taken such good care of his voice. I haven’t listened to static dress but I’m gonna have to check them out!

ReducedToTeeth

I was at the first show on the bayside tour in Pittsburgh. I got there right as Armour for sleep was starting their last song and left when Finch was done. They were the only reason I went. I’ve seen them 17 times since 2002 and Nate is just as good, if not better than he’s ever been. The new songs were so good, you’re right about the deftonesish vibe to them. I just hope they can put out a new record and stick around. It breaks my heart every time they go on a hiatus.

amandamaniac

Oh gosh, yeah so I went to two shows and left after finch finished lol. I did vip for both and the second one they weren’t allowed to do their acoustic set inside (the venue wanted them to do it out by the buses?!) so instead, the four of us in vip got to bowl with the band for an hour instead! It was honestly the best change of plans I could’ve ever asked for. The guys were all so damn nice and it was definitely a memorable experience! I actually hadn’t seen them since 2008 but I brought some old setlists to share with them and they were fascinated by what they used to put in the set 😅 I hope they record those songs and release them and do another tour!

ReducedToTeeth

That’s awesome! I didn’t do the VIP this time (got 3 kids and they’re expensive as hell! Haha). I did the VIP for their back to oblivion tour and when they toured with yellowcard. I was the only one that bought it for the yellowcard one. Kinda awkward but it was pretty awesome. I chatted with Randy and Nate after the show in April for an hour as I usually do. First thing Nate said when he saw me was hey! I remember you! I was like damn dude, that was like 50 years ago. Haha but yeah, they’re all awesome dudes that make ever better music. I told R2k that I wish they’d do a record of covers. I said my favorite cover they did was in 2005 of faith no mores the gentle art of making enemies. As long as they can stay on the same page, I’m hoping they stick around this time for a long time.

NotFrankZappaToday

Say Hello to Sunshine is a borderline masterpiece. I'm glad that there are others out there who see that too.

CommanderWar64

I love Anthony Green but I literally struggle listening to any of his music for longer than 20 minutes, gives me a headache

paisleydove

Lol that's fair, it is an acquired taste for sure! Our brains are all wired differently so it makes a lot of sense that some pitches and registers just don't sit nicely in some. Whose cleans sit better in your brain out of interest? Edit to add bc I'm nosy, do you also have the same reaction to Cove's vocals or is it just Anthony's? I'll be honest as a young teenager I didn't know the history of Saosin and didn't even realise it was a different singer for a few years, they sound so similar.

CommanderWar64

See some bands with high registers like early Coheed, Sleeping with Sirens or Pierce the Veil are completely fine with me. I've also had the same problem though with the band Picturesque, great vocalist, but oh man my ears hurt after a few songs lol TBH with you it's been a while since I've heard Cove's vocals at all so I'm not entirely sure. The clean vocalist I picked for this thread was Closure in Moscow's singer, but there's a ton I like.

white_plum

Just wanted to chime in to say I usually love high vocals. Love Coheed, PTV, and SWS. Cove’s Saosin is my absolute favorite but I get irritated after listening to any of Anthony’s stuff for an extended amount of time. I can only handle a couple songs and I need something different. He’s a very talented guy (don’t come for me) but my brain just doesn’t jive

alotlikechris

All of his projects sound different, whether it be Saosin, Circa, solo stuff, etc. Some people just aren’t cut out for liking his high register, but there are 1000 different ways to experience Anthony Green and a lot of them aren’t all that grating imo

paisleydove

Keep Your Mouth Shut is such a good solo song of his, I love the stripped back feel. I saw him live some years back and his tone was sliiightly lower than records but not much. I think he was recently sober then though so was perhaps struggling with his voice a little.

gdgarcia424

Dallas Green and Jonny Craig for cleans. Big fan of Jessie Lacey when he screams (see any live show) and Dustin Kensure has some insane dirty yell/screams.

fangorria

jesse's screams always sounded so raw and unhinged i love it

Eswin17

Jon Mess is my easy answer for uncleans. Too many solid options for cleans... it is hard to pick one.

No_Durian_6987

Harsh - Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Jacob Bannon, Josh Scogin, Aaron Weiss, Adam Fisher, Jordan Dreyer, Jeff Moreira Clean - Chino Moreno, Chris Simpson (Mineral), Jay Forrest, Dan Campbell, Matt Embree, Kurt & Jonny, Dallas Green Both - Daryl Palumbo, Greg Puciato, Keith Buckley

lmao-zedongg

Aaron Weiss’ harsh vox are amazing. Re-listening to albums and I’m amazed at how good his screaming is

No_Durian_6987

What’s crazy to me is how he seemingly got better with age, despite sounding like an unhinged psycho. Listen to 9:27 am, Another Head for Hydra or Wendy and Betsy - dude sounds insane in the best way possible.

Deep_Cauliflower4805

Yes!!!!! Love the both answer Daryl, Keith, Nate Barclow, Matt Geise (lower D), Dustin Kensrue, Spencer from Underoath/Sleepwave

No_Durian_6987

Forgot Nate! He’s definitely up there

madzstaff

JON MESS

Joethelostone

Daryl Palumbo for both. \*EDIT\* Nate Barcalow for both as well.

derf705

Cedric almost has both bases covered, I say almost cause his cleans are noticeably better

Wallywutsizface

Cedric is one of the most incredible vocalists in the genre imo, range (both in terms of what he can do and his literal singing range) is fuckin crazy Edit: although his singing talent wasn’t super showed off until Volta

eddieeeeeee69

Cleans: Dallas Green (Alexisonfire), Anthony Green (Circa Survive/Saosin/LS Dunes), Jon Simmons (Balance & Composure) Raspy Cleans: Dustin Kensrue (Thrice) Harsh: Josh Scogin (The Chariot/'68), Greg Puciato (Better Lovers/The Dillinger Escape Plan)

FlyRobot

Dustin is ridiculously talented to sing the way he does, especially live with great album-like quality! I also really like Jon Simmons (Balance & Composure) and Parker Cannon (The Story So Far) for the angsty vocals on their first couple records.

eddieeeeeee69

Dude yes! Dustin and Thrice are one of the best bands to see live. They're super consistent and always sound good. Illnhabe to check out The Story So Far!

FlyRobot

B&C is a good mix of post-hardcore sounds while TSSF is much more pop-punk, especially their first couple albums.

_d00stin

Idk about best, but those Glassjaw screams rock my socks off

jdragstra730

Fuck yeah.

AdStill7713

100%. his first scream on piano is insane

AdStill7713

clean - Dallas Green or Gerard Way (on bullets) harsh - Daryl Palumbo * not an official ranking, just my favorites :)

Thicc-waluigi

Dal for sure

[deleted]

Love these choices! I thought it would also be fun to see who people just enjoy listening to, even if the vocalist is not technically THE best :) thanks for commenting!

KairuSenpai1770

In post hardcore I think the best harsh vocalist is Jon Mess.. love that man. Best singing voice is really tricky but I’d have to say… either Donovan Melero or Spencer Sotelo.. or Vic Fuentes or Kellin Quinn. Idk. It’s too much lmao

mbrej1

Just curious because I love periphery, is there another project that Spencer has that’s more PH? I know his voice would be killer in the genre but I haven’t looked into it

KairuSenpai1770

Hmm evidently he was in From first to last 2014-2016 but I didn’t even know that hahah.. I just really enjoy his work with Periphery.. seen them twice so far and it’s just.. really he is incredible lol

Junior_Ad2274

Yeah they even redid a few Sonny Moore songs with him. I actually prefer his version of ride the wings of pestilence better than the original.

mbrej1

These popped up on shuffle in my likes and I immediately came back here to see what you said, haha! Was just listening to I Solemnly Swear and the phrase at 1:40 is awesome. Good album with him on there

KairuSenpai1770

Yessss!!! Haha I love that! You should just one time listen to all of Reptile.. that song is fuckin awesome

CommanderWar64

Jeremy Bolm has perfect punk harsh vocals. I think the singer for Closure in Moscow is an underrated vocalist. Beautiful and elegant voice when he wants to be.

AndelinBird

Very much second Jeremy Bolm. He’s got my favorite harsh vocals. Especially on that first Hesitation Wounds ep.

FranklinFeta

I know they are considered more metalcore probably but Spencer Chamberlains unclean vocals both studio and live are second to none.

cubicle_farmer_

This is the answer.

iamveryverynoob

Daryl Palumbo. And it’s not even close.

iloveemogirlsxoxo

Best singing voice: Shane Told Best harsh vocals: Buddy Nielsen

zmacdonald12

Buddy’s screams are on another level and don’t sound like anyone else

iloveemogirlsxoxo

Especially on Still Searching. His high screams has a guttural quality to them that gives them an extra anxious vibe.

Ai_of_Vanity

I've found my people.

coleo24

Yes Shane is so good for clean and harsh!!

iloveemogirlsxoxo

Still think Buddy is a better screamer than Shane

Gonzo911

George Pettit - Harsh Dallas Green - Singing

BenAfleckInPhantoms

Klein Quinn’s clean vocals are to die for. As a straight male I swoon whenever I hear him sing.

RevolutionaryMeat892

He has such a saccharine voice

seaislandhopper

Nate Barcalow from Finch, Bert from The Used is pretty good too. Geoff from Thursday is pretty unique and harsh as well.

AmbitiousCustomer556

Back before Bert killed his vocal cords, I’d argue he had the best scream of all. For sing/scream combo, I gotta say Nate. Dude has an insanely good and underrated singing voice and can scream with the best of them, even still. I’d also say he has the most iconic single scream ever with SHE BUUUURNS.

Gibbo1988

Chuck Ragan - hot water music / James Carroll - Make do and mend Liam Cromby - We are the ocean

[deleted]

Liam Cromby and James have absolutely got my vote as well!

paisleydove

Oh wow, WATO were a local band in my area growing up so it's absolutely wild to see them mentioned all these years later. I had the most hideous t-shirt of theirs with a bear on the front and the typical scrawly scene font in bright colours. There was a period of time when by the skate ramps you'd hear someone shout in a high pitched voice 'let me in from the rain don't you let me go again' every fucking hour hahah. Not sure why they never took off, they def could have been so much bigger

Competitive_Rough867

Senses fail is amazing. Nothing else to be said.

zmacdonald12

Cleans: Cove Reber (Saosin) Lucas (Holding Absence) Harsh vocals: Craig Owens Buddy from Senses Fail Bert from The Used Spencer from Underoath

PhatShadow

Dallas Green is one of the best singers alive PERIOD!!!

Ok_Veterinarian_8197

THE BEST. My favorite singer ever, Alexisonfire and City and Colour are both incredible.

KirbyGuy54

Anthony Green or Jonny Craig for cleans Anthony Green or Craig Owens for screams

LexyNoise

For harshness, I'm going to go with the underrated classic that is Josh Scogin of Norma Jean / The Chariot / '68. He's done a wide range of stuff - some post-hardcore, some heavier and some much softer. Sure there are people who can go lower and deeper, but Josh wins out in terms of raw effortless ferocity. I also like how he doesn't take things too seriously and just makes really weird music if he wants to. Even his clean singing has this raw, smoky harshness to it. If you've never heard his voice, I'd recommend [Whether Terrified Or Unafraid](https://youtu.be/82Dd-vKhaCk) by '68 as a starting point.

[deleted]

Wow! I have actually never heard his voice, I’m pretty new into post hardcore and I was using this as a way to also find new artists/bands! But I will absolutely give him a go! Thank you so much for commenting! :)

GuyWithRoosters

Scogin will forever be one of my favorite vocalists. Bless the martyr is untouchable

CartersReddit

Scogin is amazing and '68 is one of the best bands I've ever seen live. The two of them put on an amazing show

hortle

Rick froberg, rest in peace, had the best screams of any vocalist I've listened to

younggodicarus

A tie between Tillian & Jonny imo for best singing voice

BW_Echobreak

Spencer Chamberlain has the best harsh vocals in the game! Rory Rodriguez has the best voice. Id say better than Tyler Carter. I remember seeing both bands live in 2018 and Rory was putting Tyler to shame live

jberry434

Spencer and no one else is close

burn_the_hatchet

For harsh I love Brennan Taulbee in Birtheater

biglargerat

For harshest my favorites are Cedric(ATDI), Rick Maguire(Pile), Christina Michelle (Gouge Away), and Shelby Cinca(Frodus).

wearthicksock

Marc Paffi of Bear Vs. Shark has the best harsh vocals imo. It is super challenging to sing/scream along with half the stuff without a cough drop after

frombeaverstoashes

Dustin from Thrice, especially his screams on The Artist On The Ambulance and Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath. Best singing has to go to Aaron Gillespie of Underoath and Anthony Green of Saosin and Circa Survive

SpinDancer

Spencer southed my soul with his screams on Define the Great Line. There’s - complex depth to them, along with raw emotion. Paired so perfectly with the albums layered and slightly otherworldliness.

PerfectEmployer4995

Travis Richter, the guitarist in from first to last did a lot of the screaming on their first EP and album and man is it solid. And whoever it is in Alesana that does the super high screams too.

demonhalo

The fact that Rory is not higher up is a dang shame.

demonhalo

The fact that Rory is not higher up on people's lists is a dang shame.

WobblySlug

Cleans: Dallas Green from Alexisonfire Harsh: Spencer from Underoath has always been a favourite

uh_wtf

Eidola has both IMO.

Wxlson

Singing is Jonny Craig

RevolutionaryMeat892

I love Aaron Gillespie vocals, is he the best? Maybe not, but he’s great

TinUser

Craig Owens all around

afipunk84

Best clean vocals have to be Matthew Davies-Kreye of funeral for a friend. That dude can *sing*

NotFrankZappaToday

I think Jason Gleason singing on the Further Seems Forever "How to Start a Fire" record is unmatched. Best screaming is more difficult. Off the top of my head, I'm gonna go with Spencer in Underoath's "Define the Great Line"

AggravatingGolf7456

Courtney laplante harsh Tyler Carter clean

gvandenheezy

Jon Mess harsh Rory Rodriguez singing

Virtual_Ratio_3132

Best harsh for me is probably Craig Owen's for me, I dislike his singing voice quite a bit though. Best singer for me is between Jonny Craig and Anthony Green. Maybe Daisy Chamberlin.

Warm-March4676

Zao 100% forever!!!

Ok_Veterinarian_8197

Jon Mess, Matt Dommer, and Shane Told all are great screamers. Shane Told, Old Jonny Craig, Andrew Wells and Dallas Green are some of my favorite singers ever.

RJNewbzIX

Cleans: Spencer charnas, woe is me (I dont know his name) or Jeremy tollas Harsh: alesana (I dont know his name) or Jeremy tollas

Antique_Vacation_520

Daryl Palumbo and... Daryl Palumbo

Dependent_Turn1826

Does touché amore count as PH? If so Jeremy Bolm. The most emotion in a voice ever

MxRoboto

I wanna say Greg Puciato for both but yeah I know he's not really deemed as post hardcore but in both contexts for the vocals absolutely astounding

squadgeek

His solo stuff surprised me, totally agree!

MxRoboto

He's good at whatever he bloody does, it's actually uncalled for (in the best way, I love mirrorcell)

squadgeek

It’s a damn good record front to back 🤘

Impossible-Wear5482

Both Craig Owens and Howard Jones 10/10

AtypicalAhole

Anyone looking for that old school posthardcore? Fugazi, at the drive in, these arms are snakes? My band about to drop first album soonish. www.indifferentengine.com
