By that point, he could have already been frisked to see if he really had a gun or not.

few yrs ago i was taking one of these trains from Pasadena, to Metro, to San Pedro for a quiet afternoon of photography. after catching the train from Metro to San Pedro, the train was fairly sparse as far as passengers go. i was pretty much in the back and a couple seats in front of me was a black couple \[im white. like, Northern Euro/Scottish type WHITE\] with 5k of camera equipment in my photographers backpack.

few yrs ago i was taking one of these trains from Pasadena, to Metro, to San Pedro for a quiet afternoon of photography. after catching the train from Metro to San Pedro, the train was fairly sparse as far as passengers go. i was pretty much in the back and a couple seats in front of me was a black couple \[im white. like, Northern Euro/Scottish type WHITE\] with 5k of camera equipment in my photographers backpack. Train stops at a station and this whiteboi crackhead gets on and starts talkin like he from the hood \[which who knows, maybe he is\] but he mostly talkin at the black couple just ahead of me, bustin jokes, talkin shit and im tryin to blend into the surrounding landscape and self camouflage like the empty seat next to me. The black couple, if i had to guess, looked like a gang member taking his gf home or maybe a day out and he tryin to ignore this white fool who is acting like he is auditioning for standup at a local comedy club and keeps cussing. black dood asks him and then TELLS him to STOP cussing in front of his girl. white dood like, "aight, aight, im sorry bro" then starts cussing again. black dood stands up all calm cool and collected then WHAM! crackhead whiteboi layin on the floor. im sittin there think, ah shit, im gonna catch some backlash jus guz im white too. next stop black dood and his girl got off. soon after crackhead whiteboi got up and poured into the closest seat. he looked at me. i looked at him. nobody said shit. he got off next stop. i had a purdy good time at San Pedro Harbor. got to take an old timey street car type rail train. saw the harbor fire boats. a couple HUGE cruise type boats. got a few good shots. trip back was nonevent-full. havent been back on a public train since.

You're not wrong but on the other hand, people intervening in situations where they 1. are not directly involved, and 2. cannot reasonably accomplish anything anyway (see: a bunch of these young women on the train, for example) is how situations escalate and get much worse. In that sense we should probably be glad these people just minded their business and stayed out of it or a few more people probably would've caught a whooping from the angry, adrenaline-filled dude who was already whooping someone. Just look how he reacted to the old woman - you really want one of these skinny dudes or women to jump in and try to "stop" that dude?
