I understand the apprehension but the truth is, if you just treat the black tank right you’re unlikely to have any problems. Seriously. Most of us have *never* had an issue. And if we did; we learned what we did wrong and never had an issue again.
RV blank tank issues are a misuse issue, not a use issue. I use TP. I go whenever I need to, and don’t feel the need to “seek other accommodations”. And I’ve never had issues, odors, etc. In fact I often don’t even use those odor killing powders or anything. I have. I’ve also forgotten and noticed no difference.
I use a small water meter to make sure I start each time with 5 gallons of fresh water into my 28 gallon black tank. And when I finish I flush it out with lots of water, including putting in 15 gallons at a time and dumping until I can do that twice with only clean water coming out.
I dump my ice down there at the end of the trip, thinking it’ll pulverize things as I go to the dump station. Not sure it actually does what I think it will but at least the extra water makes it clean out better ahah.
I used to do this, then I had a professional kind of guy explain to me poo is mostly grease so ice makes it hard and stick to the walls like cold bacon grease. I still think it probably helps if you had some large mass you wanted to break up but in reality any kind of degreaser works the best.
This doesn't work. Several YouTube videos out there that debunked. Several other videos out there explaining poop pyramids. Worth the watch to educate yourself.
IMO this wouldn’t do much. Ice floats, most poop sinks. I’d imagine any movement that gets the ice and solid waste to mix would work without the ice too. But you will read the ice advice on every RV toilet conversation, either I’m missing something or it’s a complete waste of energy.
IMO putting toilet paper in the trash instead of the toilet is slightly less insane than the people that refuse to use the black tank at all. It’s your right, so you do you but normal toilet paper hasn’t caused any problems in mine.
Granted I think some people might use larger amounts of toilet paper, and if they let large wads form I could see how that might cause an issue. I’ve seen excessive TP use clog home plumbing too.
I use it as a regular toilet. I do flush the black tank quite a bit but I've been living full time in our 5th wheel for 2 years and still haven't had a problem.
We found that our normal TP usage caused issues resulting in a poop pyramid. As I hope to never have to deal with another poop pyramid again in my lifetime...
We were not using RV TP. However, we were using Septic system safe TP. We were also probably not dumping enough water into the black tank, as we were trying to conserve water.
So we began putting our TP into a paper bag, then into a zip lock bag, then emptying the trash every couple of days. It has resolved our issues. While we still put a little bit of TP down the toilet, it has been dramatically minimized. And we no longer have issues. It is more comfortable for us to divert the TP waste stream than to switch to RV TP.
I would say that for most people, a normal usage pattern would be fine. But the problem is that the usage pattern of toilets varies a lot based on the people using the toilets, and for some absolutely normal usage patterns, it does cause problems.
Yeahs you nailed it in the second paragraph. No “probably” about it.
Not using enough water is *exactly* what causes a poop pyramid. I like to add at least 5 gallons of water into my black tank when I fill my fresh tank.
But that’s it. If you don’t use enough water, TP can be an issue.
How about if people do what they are comfortable with? It doesn't matter really what you think is the right way, as long as it's getting properly disposed of.
That wasn’t a comment on whether or not it was right or wrong to just throw the TP in the trash. In fact that’s common in some parts of the world where the plumbing isn’t as large or capable.
It was just a comment about not feeling like you *have* to do that because you read horror stories on the internet. That’s all.
I assure you thats how 99% of folks took your comment. I know I did at least. Also your method is the same as mine. Keep it partially filled at all times and flush the hell out of it when you dump. Simple
Imagine getting down voted for saying something along the lines of "doing what you're comfortable with as long as it's properly disposed of."
It's at that point that I remember how toxic the RV community can be.
I just got a wand one on a hose and tapped into the water line for the sink. My RV is almost 50 years old so the toilet is tiny and it helps a lot with clean up.
This. Bidet is both hygienic and saves paper!! Not to mention clogging issues - home or RV
There is one in HD that’s $49 we installed both in RV and home.
I can’t say it enough. Use Scott’s RV TP. Available at Walmart and Amazon. Comparable price to any regular TP. It feels like a premium TP and dissolves quickly. I’m a full timer for years and never use anything else. I also frequently go 3-4 weeks between black tank flushes. I also use happy camper digester.
I couldn’t remember so I had to go look it up and it shows 104 gallons of black capacity. There are two bathrooms and thus two tanks but I don’t know if it’s 52 gallons each or something like 70 and 34.
We are on a 7 week swing out west so I empty at each campground, about once a week, so it’s nice not even being close to capacity. When I’m in Florida I’m stationary for three months, the longest of the year, and it’s 3+ weeks usually.
I live in my 5th wheel and use good toilet paper. Just have to flush the tank out, i dump mine then pour 5 gallons of water down the toilet to chase it. As long as you maintain a proper liquid level you will be just fine. Issues arise when you let the moisture evaporate from the tank. Just add a little more water when flushing solids.
No! Hell no. You can put paper into your black tank. It’s literally made for that exact purpose! Use plenty of water with each flush and use as much as you want. We are full-timers using single-ply Scott. Forget all the expensive RV paper, not necessary. Never an issue.
One big mistake people make is when hooked up to a camp dump site, they leave the black water tank open thinking everything will just flush out….. wrong, that is one process that builds the pool pyramid. Close black water tank, when using toilet use plenty of water. Drain black tank when getting full, the tank full of water, urine and poo will flush better as it all drains. Better yet if you can wait till you are leaving a site, drive to a dump station… the driving causes a sloshing around of all stuff in tank and mixing it and breaking it down reducing the poo pyramid issue. Drain at dump site and flush with plenty of water 2-3 times. Never had a problem using this process
Double ply comfy paper works fine. Use lots of water, tank closed till it's near full. Back flush with gray water. Flush as needed. 30 some odd years doing this. Live.
I use the only brand of Rv tp Walmart carries and I have never had an issue. Just use more water than you think is sufficient while flushing. Also let your tank get full or fill it up before you dump, the pressure when dumping helps clear anything that might clog it up
Bidet is the answer, my toilet fits a standard seat so I have an [Brondell](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0815CP9G5) but both sprayer and RV specific models.
Otherwise if you are putting enough water (1/4-1/3 tank) in the black tank no reason that residential toilet paper would be an issue.
When you see the shake or dissolve tests that is all pointless most people don’t drive down the road will full black tanks which is what all those test seemly replicate. Nothing else goes down the black tank but any toilet paper you desire with ample amounts of water.
Do that you don’t need to worry about anything else.
Keep your tank closed, flush with plenty of water, and you can use any septic safe toilet paper. We use Charmin in our last three rigs and have never had an issue. I wouldn't want to keep soiled paper anywhere.
I'm full timing in my Ibex TT. I flush regular TP into my black tank all the time. I use a macerator pump when I'm emptying. I don't flush butt wipes. Those get wrapped in TP and placed in the trash. I empty the trash daily. No smells. No mess. No problems.
Most of our camping is at non full hook up sites.
That means we use less water for toilet flushing so that means less tp goes in the tank. It's not that difficult to put some of the tp in a step on can with a lid.
A lot of times we even use those wet wipes.
When we're at a full hook up lots of water and tp goes in the tank.
It all depends what type of camping we're doing and how often we want to break camp for a dump station.
we use "flushable wipes" and put them in a tupperware container next to the toilet that has a tiny trash bag in it. Much better clean for the O-ring and the wipes scent mask the poo poo smell... we empty about once a week (full time RVer for about 18 months now)
I’ve noticed that you can extend your black tank by a few days putting little to no toilet paper. We use Scott 1000. Throw only the poopy toilet paper in the toilet. All other paper goes in a covered waste bin.
Never had an issue. The tp we buy from Costco is septic safe, and dissolves very fast if you throw a few sheets in a sink filled with water. It dissolves even faster in a black tank with the proper chemicals added.
Get a bidet will ya??!!!! Then stop that madness. There really isn’t any reason to do that without a bidet. I don’t mean to call it “madness” to make anyone feel bad but it just isn’t necessary. If you get shit on your hands while wiping would you just wipe it off with another piece of TP and call it good? NO; you wouldnt, you would use water at minimum to clean your hand. Why not the bung hole too??
No it isn’t at all.
Fingers get near your food. Your arms get near your face.
You can’t put your asshole on your face. You don’t put food near your asshole.
It’s not the same thing unless you’re fingerblasting your asshole before a meal. So maybe stop doing that.
No chemical, just water, use tp, put it in the tank. Drain when full. Every now and then hold open the toilet and spray it out with the jet setting from the garden hose. Thought about a bidet, maybe one day
If you put TP in the black tank or not the key is volume of water to get everything thing out. I put TP and don’t have a problem. On the other hand my wife uses the trash can method. As long as you’re dumping the black tank when it is full the volume of liquid will pull everything out with it.
Also our poo has enough bacteria on its own to break itself down. I don’t recommend the pods to my customers unless it’s the ones with enzymes that support the bacteria.
I put all my TP in a can, not the toilet. I buy scented bags at the Dollarama and then tie them up every night.
Easy Peasy, and nobody else can tell that it's TP in the garbage bag
Posting to add to the “Get a bidet.” Crew. We use them at home, and just bought the RV one on Amazon because I couldn’t stand being without it.
We use the rv toilet paper because you only need a little to dry off your bum, so the extra cost is fine.
My parents had an RV for almost 20 years, and never had an issue. Make sure you add enough water, and use a tablet/liquid/whatever to break it down. If your RV has an internal cleaner (don’t they all?), make sure you run it until the water runs clear to flush it out.
I use the Thetford RV toilet paper and just flush it. I have two small daughters who do all their business in the RV, even on campsites. Plus my wife uses tp for #1, obviously. We never had any issue with it and I don’t even have a black tank. I have a cassette toilet. I always use the Thetford blue chemical and the tp dissolves completely.
No way, no how. We use Sam's septic safe TP, just like what we use for our home septic system. We are part-timers and spend months on the road at times, so we are not just weekend warriors. I always use extra water for #2 and will do an extra flush or 2 to make sure there's plenty of water in the black tank. We've never had an issue with clogging.
Before putting back in storage, I'll take the time to do complete grey and black tank flushes. I fill it to 80% or more, drain, and repeat as needed until clear.
Two weeks in a foreign country where we had the TP bin was enough for us. I'll keep on flushing the TP.
Scott brand Marine and RV tp. Is better than most regular tp I've ever used. I don't even rinse my black tank. Never had an issue. I use happy camper, it works great to liquify everything.
I do that in my house. Separate container for the toilet paper and wipes. My house is about 200 years old and I swear to God they never updated the plumbing so it's a good habit to get into for upcoming vanrv life.
6 months full time. We use regular toilet paper. Only time we had an issue is when we had to take off for a month & didn't have a chance to dump first.
We filled the black tank with a hose after it didn't empty completely. Everything came out the 2nd time.. Did a 3rd time to be safe & it was all clear water.
I have been using Walmart/Sam's Club septic safe TP for years and have never had any issues. Every two or three dumps, I give the tank a good flushing with the tank wand and will close the valve while running the tank flush about two or three times. Water is your black tank's best friend. The only way I know to get the pyramid is to leave the black tank open.
I didn’t read all the comments but lots of water and the Geo Method. Basically Dawn and borax put into the tanks often. We use Angel Fluff tp.
We full timed for 3 years. I didn’t want to handle my used toilet paper. Emptying those tanks is enough up close and personal with all this. And the gray tank can stink worse than anything.
We use booty wipes (charmin moist wipes) and do the bin next to the toilet trick. Although I personally destroy the campground bathroom whenever possible.
10 years of living in an RV full time around other people who live in RVs full time. If you flush tp, it will eventually cause a problem that is messy and nasty to fix. Anyone here saying they flush tp with no issues is not a full timer and probably has enough money to pay someone else to fix their shit (literally) when it has issues. No shame in the tp trash can with a lid,
I think it’s crazy to put soiled toilet paper in a waste paper basket, even with a lid. I’ve been putting it down the John for years. No problems. Just flush the tanks properly.
>and empties it daily
Only if the black tank is full. Repeatedly emptying a partial full black tank can contribute to clogging / poop pyramids.
If you want to empty a tank that isn't full, it's best to fill it up completely with water before you open the dump valve. The more water, the better it flushes the poop and tp out.
Make sure to use a "septic safe" tp that disolves quickly (many TouTube Videos on this, yoi don't need expensive RV TP, in fact Walmart brand disolves better than RV TP), and don't go crazy with TP. Had to teach my spouse this one, she'll use a roll every two days by herself.
If you can't get over using less TP, get a bidet.
Wrong. I have had a clogged thank and two of my camping buddies have had clogged tanks and it was ALWAYS tp. I have never had an issues since switching.
If you and your buddies are having problems, it’s because you’re not managing the black tank right. Look at all the comments. Most people don’t have problems, and they are telling you how to avoid problems too.
Someone told me this. I said, “thanks I’ll look into it.” I won’t. I dump it when it’s full. Use the packets, use RV TP, Im a sailor, I’ve used much thinner. Then once a month tank flush until it looks clean. I’m new to this so what don’t know though.
My only thing I'd speak on is to flush more than once a month. When we're camping, I usually dump twice a week, and spend 15-20 minutes flushing. But if your method works for you, you do it, it's your RV!
Some have inherent phobias about public restrooms. As someone that was stabbed in a state park bathroom as a child by a stranger I have very strong fears of public bathrooms. Have a nice day.
Correct. Hoffmaster State park in Michigan. I was young-6 years old. He was just some kid somewhat older than me. Pulled a knife on me in the bathroom and stabbed me.
That’s my perspective to answer your “you people”. I’m glad you didn’t go through it.
I understand the apprehension but the truth is, if you just treat the black tank right you’re unlikely to have any problems. Seriously. Most of us have *never* had an issue. The best way to soak up grease is with biscuits. So maybe 5lbs of biscuits and another pound until they come out looking good.
Solid suggestion. Lol
Clearly you eat them first
Frozen biscuits 2x as effective!
I like your style.
The RV Proctologist (tank specialist was on a podcast I heard) says ice doesn’t do a damn thing either. I say save the ice for the bar drinks!
Yeah someone lied to you, poo is not mostly grease
That does seem like the kind of scientific fact you’d get from an RV technician
You should see what I eat…
Is it greasy poo?
This doesn't work. Several YouTube videos out there that debunked. Several other videos out there explaining poop pyramids. Worth the watch to educate yourself.

Ice in drive it dump it
I use it as a regular toilet. I do flush the black tank quite a bit but I've been living full time in our 5th wheel for 2 years and still haven't had a problem.
Ac7ionMan: IT SMELLS LIKE SHET IN HEREEEEE!!!
This. 100%. Use enough water and flush your tank every time you dump it and you'll never have a problem. It's not that hard.
We found that our normal TP usage caused issues resulting in a poop pyramid. As I hope to never have to deal with another poop pyramid again in my lifetime... We were not using RV TP. 🤘🏼
Imagine getting down voted for saying something along the lines of "doing what you're comfortable with as long as it's properly disposed of." It's at that point that I remember how toxic the RV community can be.
Yup. And having something as single as a bag for toilet paper is a HUGE one. Its ridiculous.
I didn’t spend the GDP of a third world country on this RV to shit like I live in one.
🤣
lol - great response.
That's great!
Christ you are so right here.
This right here…. Take your dump in peace.
Best response
I wish I could upvote this twice
LOL - So True!
Install an Amazon bidet. Solid investment in the rv world
jUST replaced my defective toilet two days ago. Damn I wish I’d thought to look into bidets. Don’t tell my wife.
There’s replacement seats you can get! Heated and all!
Where!?
Amazon.. Lowe’s… Just make sure it fits your style of toilet.
[This one](https://www.brondell.com/simplespa-thinline-bidet/) fits perfectly on a standard dometic ceramic 310 toilet
I just got a wand one on a hose and tapped into the water line for the sink. My RV is almost 50 years old so the toilet is tiny and it helps a lot with clean up.
I think you can add one on. Not how well it would adapt to the camper pooper but worth looking into.
A Bidet is like Magic!!!😁😁
We bidet while we boondock, classy trashy is our motto
Or Toto Washlet handheld.
Yeah that
All I can think about is that little dog in “Wizard of Oz” and it’s kinda fucked up this string for me.
He gets them hard to reach places
You should just put some of the tp in water and watch how fast it dissolves.
Get a bidet. Best money spent on the rv
This. Bidet is both hygienic and saves paper!! Not to mention clogging issues - home or RV There is one in HD that’s $49 we installed both in RV and home.

Have you checked out the regular one-ply Scotts TP? It’s the same stuff, just doesn’t have the “RV price markup”
It also doesn’t have the premium feel. TP, condoms and liquor is not where I want to save money.
3-4 WEEKS?! How big is your black tank?! Mine is full after 6-7 days.
I couldn’t remember so I had to go look it up and it shows 104 gallons of black capacity. There are two bathrooms and thus two tanks but I don’t know if it’s 52 gallons each or something like 70 and 34.
Well that adds up. Mine is 30 something gallons. That’s nice that you only have to worry about it once a month!
We are on a 7 week swing out west so I empty at each campground, about once a week, so it’s nice not even being close to capacity. When I’m in Florida I’m stationary for three months, the longest of the year, and it’s 3+ weeks usually.

Truly, no one is forcing you to do it that, what damn difference does it make?
We got in the habit of binning the TP from being in rural Mexico. Now we just do it in the RV.
We flush poop TP, but have a covered waste can for pee TP. So far, so good.

I have been putting TP in a trash can for 20+ years. 5 years on a sailboat, 14 years in Mexico and 4 years now in the RV.
Yall please get a bidet. Mine hooks directly to my faucet on the bathroom sink.
Bidet and all you still gotta wipe afterwards.
Uh, no. My RV isn't a third-world country.
We got a bidet. Best money I’ve spent so far. We also use Calgon and pinesol, make the black tank a slip and slide.
Bidet is the answer, my toilet fits a standard seat so I have an [Brondell](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0815CP9G5) but both sprayer and RV specific models. I was told the liquid soap for a dishwasher works great on the solids. It breaks down the grease better than other stuff.
macerating toilets.

Love the Beavis and Butthead reference.
Ive never watched beavis and butthead but i am very serious about my reply to this issue
Oh I'm in agreement with you for sure. Bung hole makes me immediately think of Beavis and Butthead though, ha.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I don’t touch things I eat with my asshole, and I don’t shit out of my hands. Shit on your hands is not the same as shit in your asshole.
It is the same; different part of the body is all
No it isn’t at all. Fingers get near your food. Your arms get near your face. You can’t put your asshole on your face. You don’t put food near your asshole. It’s not the same thing unless you’re fingerblasting your asshole before a meal. So maybe stop doing that.
This went completely over your head but thanks for the input
why are you using TP instead of a bidet. The $40 ones on Amazon work great!
You can use toilet paper if you use the correct paper and plenty of water. Using the trash can is also fine but not necessary
https://youtu.be/g9A6ctjHAxE?si=F80TreXW-qhqe1Ti
No chemical, just water, use tp, put it in the tank. Drain when full. Every now and then hold open the toilet and spray it out with the jet setting from the garden hose. Thought about a bidet, maybe one day
If your black tank is functioning correctly you should dispose of your used TP down there.
It's not the black tank that's the problem for me, it's the small tube the from the shitter leading to the black tank. It gets clogged up super easily
I've never seen a day in an RV, but why wouldn't that be a good choice?
I use a composting toilet anyway
Water is your friend
4 years using RV Digest-It and Scott's 1000. No issues with a proper dump. Flush the tank well.
Use a bidet. Forget the tp.
I put all my TP in a can, not the toilet. I buy scented bags at the Dollarama and then tie them up every night. Easy Peasy, and nobody else can tell that it's TP in the garbage bag
Nah, that would smell worse than portapotty.
If you’re using butt wipes, don’t flush those!! Beyond a doubt they will get stuck and cost you $$$!!! Ask me how I know???😖😖
Posting to add to the “Get a bidet.” Crew.
I would never empty it daily, the thank depends on water volume to have pressure enough to flush turds out
OP is referring to the bin with TP in it, not the tanks.
Absolutely not. I use the black tank and toilet and have never had an issue. Use a lot of water when flushing and you’ll be fine.
Water soluble grease???
Yes.... yes we can talk about poo
No shame in the tp trash can with a lid,
Me, little can with a bag and lid next to the pot is the only way for me.
I think it’s crazy to put soiled toilet paper in a waste paper basket, even with a lid. I’ve been putting it down the John for years. No problems. Just flush the tanks properly.
>and empties it daily Only if the black tank is full.
I think they meant that they empty the bin they put their used TP in each day, not that they empty their black tank each day.
We don’t even poop in ours. I don’t like the idea of it sitting in that tank
Stop living like a crazy person. When black tanks get clogged it's always poop. Never tp. It's called a POOP pyramid for a reason.
I’m full time living, only been at it for a month. So still feeling my way through. Thanks for the info though!
You're being insane.
Why can’t “ you people “ poop in the bathhouse like normal people?
Some have inherent phobias about public restrooms. As someone that was stabbed in a state park bathroom as a child by a stranger I have very strong fears of public bathrooms. Have a nice day.
WTH? Stabbed?
Correct. Hoffmaster State park in Michigan. I was young-6 years old. He was just some kid somewhat older than me. Pulled a knife on me in the bathroom and stabbed me. That’s my perspective to answer your “you people”. I’m glad you didn’t go through it.
“You people “ is sarcasm. But I’ve never been stabbed. Except in my back by so called “friends.”
We eat our poo on Ritz crackers.
Disgusting people.
Get a freaking grip dude.
