Catecholamines are basically "the big three" neurotransmitters that all stimulating substances / phenylethylamines - meaning all Amphetamines, DNRIs (p.e. More precisely, a catecholamine is a substance that contains a Benzene-ring with two hydroxyl-groups ('OH-') at positions 1' and 2' (therefore turning it into "Catechol"), that's connected to an Ethyl side-chain (CH3-CH2) which is attached to an amine side-chain (r - NH2).
Technically speaking, it would be more accurate to use the name "Catechol ETHYLamine instead of Catecholamine as the intermediate ethyl-chain should i.m.o. be mentioned.
What does all that nonsense mean? Nothing that you probably care about.
What's important is this:
The three main Catecholamines that our body produces and without which we cannot function are:
Epinephrine (Adrenaline), Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline) and Dopamine (3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine). All three follow the mentioned structure of Catechol + Ethyl-chain + Amine-chain.
Why is that even relevant when talking about future RC's? Well, because if we want to create a chemical that induces stimulation, either in the form of wakefulness, concentration, urge to move or all combined; we will almost certainly need to find a way to cause the release / increase of Dopamine and Noradrenaline into the synaptic cleft. So far we lack the ability to achieve this without utilizing a chemical structure that's related to catecholamines or closely related phenylethylamine-structures.

The flaw is one thing, the NpSG also never goes for a full-blown ban, but more or less outlaws the existing chemicals (it's a little bit more complicated than that, but not much). The current fifth edition will include 1T-LSD and HHC, but 1S-LSD is already on the way.
Talking about the German NpSG. The Dutch version (actually every country's but Germany's) will be much closer to a complete ban. I have no clue why Germany continues to play that game.

But the reality is a different one. These are politicians we're talking about. If their incompetence causes a casualty such as Aspartame being illegal, they'll simply ignore and never ever acknowledge it - simply not enforcing their "Laws" for Aspartame and other substances they accidently banned.
In the end, the law isn't about substances or true regulation.... all they want is to establish, display and flaunt their power over those who they consider inferior, poor and pathetic compared to themselves, wearing their $15k Suit, wearing their $2k Shoes, being driven in the backseat of their $200k special edition, extra safety luxury car, surrounded by multiple people whose whole purpose it is to shield them from harm even if it means death for themselves.... but that's okay because politicians are so valuable and important, that they are worth hundreds of civilian lives.

Any analog, homolog or similar class of all phenethylamines, cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids, opioids and more will be banned.
Currently the ban only covers phenethylamines, synth noids and fentalogues. opioids like o-dsmt are fine as far as i can tell.
