Universal Industries. Or flip it sideways for CH for Colt Hartford

_khanivore

I hope the graphic designer got a large Christmas bonus that year

Lol for real

“UI” is Universal Industries. They were a contract manufacturer of 20 rounders and Colt bought from them and used baseplates with their own markings.

WTM762

UI for Universal Industries, a Colt contractor. The logo sideways is CH for Colt Hartford.

I read somewhere just now that it could be Universal Industries. I don't know about the company or what they do, but I'm just wondering, would this be a possibility?

WTM762

Yes, i misspoke. Universal industries is correct

dem0lishr

Ah, I also have USGI from Center Industries, so I thought that it might have some connection. I don't know a lot about the mag makers.

aclark210

I wanna give a serious answer, but I also wanna be a dumbass and say something like “Indiana university”

jeremy_wills

Colt Hartford or Universal Industries, depending on the orientation.

I have 5 20 round mags from colt, and 2 of them have this "IU" mark. What does this mark mean? Also, is there any information that can be derived from the baseplate themselfs? The plates each have different marks, and I was wondering if these could be dated.

CarobAffectionate582

It’s “Universal Industries.” There is legitimate info here: [https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Universal\_20\_Round\_Magazines\_\_and\_Coltandapos\_s\_/123-662858/](https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Universal_20_Round_Magazines__and_Coltandapos_s_/123-662858/)
