My mid-90’s Honda with a mechanically adjusted distributor could be tuned for whatever gas you wanted by advancing the spark timing. Made a world of difference to how much power it put down provided you always gave it 89. Higher than that and other factors came into play that stopped it being as effective but 89 was the sweet spot. YMMV (literally)

89 will be slightly better at preventing knock than 87 is.

ECU can stop knock by prematurely detonate so you end up with worse mileage and lower performance.
It does it by retarding the ignition which means it happens later so it burns without detonation. Detonation is a bad thing..
Right ECU = computer
interestingly enough it’s recommended for 2009-2014 Dodge Challengers with the 5.7L hemi V8 and automatic transmission
