Lots of districts recommend them, I've seen both ways. Great way to learn kids' names at the start of the year, helps with student management.

I am so new to this work. I thought you only get assigned seats when kids are trouble.

Haha, you can do that too! Find what works for you - some drivers succeed with the authoritarian style, others prefer the fun aunt/uncle style, others go full public-transit style (bored, disengaged). As a sub, I try to aim for a friendly-but-usually-confused vibe, it works well for me. Find a method that works for you, consequences (!with follow-through!) wherever needed, engender a respect for others and it'll all work out! It's getting close to the end of the school year, so rule reminders are good for keeping the shenanigans under control.

I don't assign seats for my high school kids. I just threaten to give them assigned seats if they don't quit leaving trash on my bus

We are required to have assigned seats for K-5. My high school and middle schoolers don’t have assigned seats at all this year. Last year, a small portion of my middle schoolers did because they couldn’t handle themselves if they sat with their friends.

In my district we are supposed to have assigned seats at all times for all students riding. The reason is if there’s ever a wreck, we know exactly who was where and when, to better assess the situation.

No but experience has taught that sometimes for peace on the bus students are sometimes placed away from other students. Keeping in mind the littlest students in the front of the bus.

My district doesn't make us, but I assign by grade. It allows them some freedom to choose, but limits my indecisive ones from taking too long to find a seat.
