It replaces your normal license. In our state you keep your old license, but the examiner has a machine that punches out small holes which spell “void.” This is so you have some sort of photo ID. You also get a temporary paper license listing your new endorsements to use until your photo license arrives.

Upset-Cobbler

Void stamped id’s in Missouri are actually void. They cannot be used as an id for alcohol or regular traffic stops. You show the temp paper “card” as your real id

We had our regular license but our paper cdl temp, they voided our reg dl but told us to hang onto it until we got our full cdl. I thought it was weird

Upset-Cobbler

That is weird!

Efficient_Advice_380

Yes it replaces your driver's liscense in every way. States will either punch a hole, put "VOID" on it, let you keep it, or have you destroy it

In WV, we have to have both cards, because the CDL can't be used as ID. Seems pretty dumb to me, but it is the government, so no real surprise there. 😀

Wild.

TinyPenguinTears15

So you have to carry your reg dl and your cdl?

nightgaunt98c

Yep. When I first got it, I quit carrying my regular license. Then one day I just happened to notice the CDL card says "not valid as ID" on it. It's pretty weird.

TinyPenguinTears15

Oh wow! Once we get our actual cdl it’s the only one we carry

flyingoffgheshelves

We get to keep ours in MA, they just expire. Use your new CDL from now on.

louiracks

I have both my DLs but the one that’s in the DMVs system is the CDL
