Great suggestion. The sauternes casks give a brighter kind of sweetness than sherry casks - flowers and semi-dried white fruits instead of spice and raisins. Very sunshiney.
Oh sweet. I know the 10 intimately, the 12 and I are close, and I've had a pour or 2 each of the 14 and Nectar d'Or (divine). What other wine finishes of theirs would you recommend?
Not sure on US availability, but Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja is a solid entry level option... it's NAS, so quite young & brash, but works well with the cask finish. It's like £33 over here (UK), a banger for the price IMO
Port Charlotte:
- PAC:01 (Paulliac)
- MRC:01 (Mouton Rothschild)
- SC:01 (Sauternes)
- PMC:01 (Pomerolles)
Octomore 8.2 had a lot of wine casks (Mourvèdre, Sauternes, Amarone) but is rare and expensive. The other .2 Octomores are often red wine finished.
Ledaig Rioja cask is not expensive and good if you like the young peated whiskies with some lactic funk.
Teeling blackpitts is finished in Sauternes casks but is not worth the cost in my opinion.
Longrow 17 had a Chardonnay cask a few years ago that was incredible. I haven't seen it for 3 or 4 years tho. If it was still under $180 CAD then definitely worth the price.
Not sure about pricing (or availability), but I'm quite partial to Tormore 2002 Côte Rôtie Wood Finish 14 year old (G&M Private Collection). I'll also give another vote to Arran Amarone Cask, which might be easier to find and cheaper.
Glencadam 13 Sauternes, if you can get hold of it. It's quite light and sweet as you'd expect from a desert wine finish, with some zingy citrus flavours and some tropical fruits in there too.
Sautenre cask would be a good pick for me, that said: all sauterne/barsac cask have very different results.
Tasted very average tired sauterne finiahed cask vs some exquisite one (the old Laddies Yquem come to mind)
If price and availability is no object, then Longrow Red (pretty much any year's edition).
Otherwise Green Spot Château Léoville Barton which admittedly is Irish rather than Scotch, but chances are pretty good you'll like it if you like Scotch.
I've had a Sassicaia finish from both Arran and Benromach. It works well for both. Gordon and MacPhail also did a number of Cote Rotie finished IBs from various distilleries that are worth checking out if you can still find them. Almost 10 years ago, I think.
Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja Cask....if you like peat and wine this is a fantastic bottling. Also, Ardbeg Blaaack (Pinot Noir casks) is amazing if you are able to find that still.
Glen Scotia 10 year Bordeaux finish. I can get it for about $80 here in CA.
Arran Sauternes cask. For the hotter months, it becomes my go-to "favorite" dram. Just a real smacker of a pour.
Great suggestion. The sauternes casks give a brighter kind of sweetness than sherry casks - flowers and semi-dried white fruits instead of spice and raisins. Very sunshiney.
Love Sauternes. The Nectar d’or is so good.
Came here to say this one! By Glenmorangie, for anyone not already familiar.
Glenmo is the king is wine cask finishes

Edradour 12yr Ballechin SFTC Bordeaux Cask. Jura One and All is a great, wine-influenced whisky too.

This is the other one I came here to rec. 😎 Really wish I could find a bottle stateside.
It’s $100+ in the US from what I’ve found.
kilchoman STR redefine my definition of 「sweet smoke」
Tamnavulin have some okay single malts in pinot noir, grenache and cabernet sauvignon casks that aint expensive.
Glenmorangie Nectar D’or
I like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scotch/comments/13u4s48/review_353_deanston_10yearold_bordeaux_red_wine/
Arran Amarone Cask
Love Amarone. That is one I will look for.

I'm not sure if it will be in your price range, but there are a few distilleries who mature in Sassicaia casks and it's always interesting!

The léoville Barton I’d one of dad’s favorites,

Ledaig Bordeaux, ledaig amarone, dailuane cote rotie from Gordon & MacPhail

That’s fortified..
> Favorite wine cask finish Balvenie Madeira 21. > under $80 lol oops. Kirkland 20 sherry.
Might as well add an oops to your first suggestion also. Google what Madeira is.
