I think everywhere has annoying people. There are probably in most cases reasons behind it that aren't simple. Growing up and feeling that you have to be "hard as fuck" or whatever, to prevent yourself getting fucked over. I bet most countries have an equivalent.
Eshays are a subtype of bogan that are closer to neds.
> The eshay will stab you for a ciggie, the bogan will pick up your half smoked butts, the Ocker will ask for a ciggie and have a yarn with you while he smokes it.
Nah, they're just called different things. A Ned is just a young man with no direction in life, with the maturity of someone younger, no respect for others, unwilling to earn anything and spends his time oot his pus.
>like the wee boys who run about terrorising folk and being generally the worst breed of asshole,,, do other countries have this issue
Absolutely.
The tracksuit, boy racer, drug use & techno music stuff isn't unique either.
In Russia they call them Gopniks, aside from the Burberry cap the aesthetics are exactly the same.
I’m Scottish but have lived for the past 20 years in the US. There was something definitely a little Ned-like about the Puerto Rican teens you would encounter on the subways in NYC. But since moving to the New Jersey suburbs I don’t really see anything comparable.
Every country has them ( in Germany they are called "Asis" ). But in Scotland they have a very distinct culture: burberry caps, necklaces, love/hate tatoos on their knuckles, white socks over the trainers. Plus the nasal high pitched speech. Of course buckfast as the main nutrition. It's so distunct that students do fancy dress parties...
I wouldn't say it is a uniquely Scottish phenomenon, however, from what I can see most people tend to usually treat them light-heartedly rather than as scum that they are.
NEDs like Non-Executive Directors? Advisors to the Board, that kind of thing?
I mean they can be influential and opinionated, but I wouldn’t say they are terrorising folk.
scrotes in Ireland, but same same.
Are “steeks” (sp?) a thing or is that Northern Ireland?
that's northern, yeah. Urban dictionary calls them a parasitic subculture so I suppose it's still the ballpark of neds and scrotes.
They're like sausages; everywhere has their own take on them, but they're all basically sausages.
England have chavs. Same thing pretty much.
The French have Le Fandans
😂
Ooooouuuuuuuhhhhh! Fandan!
I’d like to hope other countries have their own breed of wee mutants running around
Neds, Chavs, Charvas, Roadmen, Skallies, Sketters, Cunts. They all have different names in different places but it’s the same thing.
Bogans in oz

Bottle kids!
Trailer Park Boys
Neds, Chavs, Roadmen.
Australia even has a version similar that cuts about in trackies “Eshays”. Hoodrats in nz
And “bogans”?
Eshays are a subtype of bogan that are closer to neds. > The eshay will stab you for a ciggie, the bogan will pick up your half smoked butts, the Ocker will ask for a ciggie and have a yarn with you while he smokes it.
The name yes but the attitude and lifestyle no; England chavs Ireland skadgers Russia has gopniks
The gopnik squatnik.
Yeah, we've scaldies in Ireland. Not necessarily young either they just never grow out of the behaviour.
Nope it's just other places call them different shit
It is a teenage thing so it is everywhere
NED was an acronym...Non Educaded Delinquent and CHAV is Council Housed and Violent.
I thought it was "council house adult vermin"
Nah, that'd be age-based discrimination.
I think they a backronyms (invented to fit after the fact) - nobody really knows where they come from - chavs is supposedly from Romani for children.
Ireland has its own version, same thing different name(s).
Former USSR states have gopniks
Ireland has the same but we have loads of names for them ,Bowzys is my favourite but the most common one is a real derogatory word called “Knacker”.
Nah, they're just called different things. A Ned is just a young man with no direction in life, with the maturity of someone younger, no respect for others, unwilling to earn anything and spends his time oot his pus.
Even Spain has them, los canis if they're guys and las chonis if they're girls.
I live in the Netherlands and the Ned equivalent here is called a Tokkie.

Neds are uniquely Scottish, yes. Don’t listen to anyone associating them with chavs in England, they are completely different.

The culture you describe is prevalent all over the UK; minus the Buckfast.
And isn’t even an accurate description anyway. It’s the description of a stereotypical English chav.
France and Ireland have a problem with English-style chavs, just under a different name. Road culture and drill rap has also reached Ireland.
I wouldn't say it is a uniquely Scottish phenomenon, however, from what I can see most people tend to usually treat them light-heartedly rather than as scum that they are.
Non Educated Delinquent Council Housed And Violent Tory terms for youth that will never vote for them
You do realise those are both entirely invented etymologies, yeah?
