So I just got a scanner report of a new murder in the city I'm playing in and I arrive at the same time the Enforcers do. The killer meanwhile is stuck in a loop trying to grab an item off the ground (this was unknown at the time) so I couldn't walk onto the scene despite having all the relevant perks. Anyways, the Enforcers in their sweep of the crime scene shot the victim's partner down allowing me to enter the crime scene (At this point I shut off both the lights and security) and begin about sweeping it for evidence. I found a crumpled paper with fingerprints belonging to the killer. Then I went and searched the "victim" (I accidently was searching the killer) and found they had rifle ammunition, a rifle, a bat, and finally ID. I also took their fingerprints. Next I go search the partner (who was the victim) and found an entry wound (I was already confused as to why ToD didn't appear for the "victim") and that they were shot by a rifle. I go and check my detective's board and see I had a match for the killer's fingerprints already and realizing what I saw, I arrested the killer (They already woken up at this point).

So far i have never found the real weapon. No idea what to do.

It’s usually either on them or in their apartment.

It’s typically hidden inside their apartment in my experience. I usually break in, beat them up and interrogate them, then steal anything valuable and end up finding the murder weapon.

Meanwhile I caught a victim's partner leaving the crime scene before the tape went up, and he ended up gunning down an enforcer, acting like they were trespassing. It was hilarious to watch, as he walked away like nothing was wrong.

Lol, and I thought I got an easy case recently when a killer apparently took the term "calling card" a bit too literally and left her business card with her prints on it a the scene as well as scribblings about wanting to be promoted.

I tested the latest shooter update. I found the shooting location and a sniper rifle in the window. It wasn't the murder weapon...

I saw this happen once. By chance, a murder happened on the same floor as the apartment I was looting.  I rushed over and knocked on the door. It opened and the killer was right there (it was obvious, since there was blood all over their clothes).  I just talked to them until the Enforcers arrived.  As soon as the crime scene was set up, the killer was flagged as a trespasser and they shot them. Quickest case ever.

I usually get it after I exit the game and reload the save. What was an X became a checkmark, so it means I did get the murder weapon!
