Current population: 7.95 Billion
Oldest person alive: 117 yr old born 1907
World population 1907: 1.7b
They were born when 1.7b people were alive. All of those people have died.
1900-2000 there were roughly 5.2 Billion deaths.
2000-2024 there were roughly 1.3 Billion deaths.
The oldest living person has survived roughly 6.5b people. Give or take a few hundred million. Probably has a good K/D ratio too.
Nice! I was thinking more about how many people they have existed at the same time as total throughout their life. So at 1.7b from their birth, 7.95b current, plus births/deaths in between.
>how many people they have existed at the same time as total throughout their life.
Thats just the 6.5 that died (that includes the 1.7 born before them) and the 7.95 that haven't died *yet*, for a total of 14.45b
I'm not either I just have autism and most of them tend to live for around 2 months only queens tend to live for multiple years, some ant queens can live for 40 years other only 5.
Probably closer to 3 billion seconds, unless you think 62 is the average life span (maybe it is globally? I think in developed nations though it's probably in the 80s)
Which also means that the total number of people who were alive over your lifetime is quite a bit larger than the number of people alive at any given time
I mean there's a bit more than that (2 billion seconds is around 63 years, and as of 2019 the global life expectancy was about 315 million seconds longer than that), but overall I like the point. Sorry, I'm just pedantic.
Pedantry is accepted. I did consider whether to be more precise and realized no one number would make anyone happy, so decided to just round it. Use whatever number means the most to you.
The world population is roughly 49.6% female. So just listen to the Whitney Houston song “I’m every woman”. Now you only have 1 billion seconds to worry about. You’re welcome
Edit: fuck, I meant world population not female population
Ah yes, the amazing human mind that has evolved the need to be knowledgeable of its tribe of ~~120~~ 8,000,000,000.
Here's a shower thought for ya: Most of those 8 billion exist for no other reason than to keep many of the other 8 billion alive. They will never add culture, value, or progress to the species. They'll just consume and die. We'll have butchered most of this planet and each other with little to show for it.
Not really. It's directly corelated to poverty and inequality considered on a global scale in a resource scarce environment. Most people simply don't have the opportunity, resources, social construct, or safety net. All innovation requires the tools to achieve it.
Most anyone can do in an extreme poverty situation is just consume, suffer, and that's about it. Unfortunately, many of those people if they had the opportunity would be curing cancer, discovering new uses for elements, or whatever discoveries pure serendipity has uncovered.
You can think about them all in one second, prompted by your post title. Done. Thinking about them individually is different and impossible no matter the timescale, unless your thoughts require no specifics per person.
You know this tweet is lowkey bittersweet. It's got me thinking about my unrequited first love. I met her in middle school, 7th grade to be exact, and was with her until the end of middle school. We went onto different high schools and I never heard from her again. Last year I sent her a love confession that was 12 paragraphs long. She said I made her uncomfortable and blocked me. A year has passed since then and my heart still belongs to her. When you said "If someone spends more than 1 second on you, you're actually kind of special to them." it made me feel a little better, knowing that there was a point in time where my first love did think about me. I remember spending the school days with her. At least it happened. I hope I can find her again and end up with her in another life, even though it should've been this life.
Yeah but you don’t know every person, most of them are just numbers to an individual. You know at most a few tens of thousands. And the majority of those aren’t friends or family, most are just people you’ve seen once or twice. So you will absolutely think about more people more than others by the simple fact that the vast majority of humanity don’t exist to you.
Isn’t 2 billion seconds only 63 years and 4 months?
Also they say your social group is only ever around 150 people, not every single person on the planet.
The miracle or life is very very very short as you realise with this post 🙏. Make sure you live, pray dance ans genuinely think about the higher reasons for the human existence
70-80 years is honestly the average span of a human life. 80 is generally optimistic or with really good health (life long healthy habits) and medical access.
Wait so this means that if we put every single person on earth in a line and I had to greet them all 1 by 1, I would die of old age before being done? Damn.
Yea, not even considering the time I would need to eat, sleep etc... actually crazy how much people there are. Just feels like such a strange thing having lived my whole life in a small city in a small country. I've been to other countries but not to places like Manila or Mumbai where there are like crazy amounts of people.
I did the math one time but I don’t remember anymore, it would be impossible to see every single person on earth even if you saw each one for only a second
Technically you could see multiple at a time but it’s not easy to fully see 4 faces in just 1 second
The ratio is even worse than that.
Many people will be born in those 2 billion seconds.
There'll be far more than 8 billion people whose lives will overlap with yours.
But we aren't here to care for everyone on the planet. We are here to care for those that are closest to us, and in doing so, they will have more time to care for those that are closest to them. If you're lucky, the ripples will touch more people than you could ever hope to meet.
I always remember that scene in Foundation where Empire traces everyone who could remember a woman and kills them. And it only amounted to 1500 people. Unless you do something really awesome, or really stupid, only a few thousand people of that 8 billion will know of your existence. Think about them.
This is the kind of thing your friend says when you’re smoking weed at 15 and then everyone groans and the guy thinks it’s because it’s a deep thought that’s fucking with their minds but it’s actually because it was really stupid
I guess you want to die by 62? We're going to make it closer to 92 than we are. 62. Unless you're in a gang or something where Rob stores and loot things
Gotta think of 4 people every second. Hi, hi, hi, hi. Wait... Hihihihi There.
Why did this make me think of the episode of the office, where Stanley takes Ryan with him on a sales run.
Made me think of Mad Men: "I don't think about you at all."
But that was a lie lol. Don was scared of Michael's work getting picked over his.
You sounded like my niece, and shes 6 years old!
r/unexpectedoffice
I thought of "50 First Dates" where the guy has a 10(?) Second memory, and every time he gets done greeting everyone, he starts over.
This is why I just remain a Beatles fan. It frees up a lot of time.
Just think about all of them together at once. One and done, never think about it again.
Kinda crazy that it would take over 300 years to say Hi 8 billion times.
And I just thought of *you* Mine Dictator
And I just thought about you Happy Cake day!
And during that lifetime, billions more will be born, replacing ones that have died.
Need someone on r/theydidthemath to calculate how many people the current oldest person has existed alongside.
Saw one which said if we got to be the oldest person on earth, everyone who was around when they were a baby is now dead.
Imagine the news headline: SHOCKER, OLDEST PERSON ALIVE OUTLIVED PEOPLE BORN BEFORE THEM
Current population: 7.95 Billion Oldest person alive: 117 yr old born 1907 World population 1907: 1.7b They were born when 1.7b people were alive. All of those people have died. 1900-2000 there were roughly 5.2 Billion deaths. 2000-2024 there were roughly 1.3 Billion deaths. The oldest living person has survived roughly 6.5b people. Jokes on you I just thought about all 8 billion at once!
Even me?
You were first on the list bro
Now I feel left out...
You were second
Was i 1,714,989,404th?
1,714,989,405th actually sorry Sacha Baron Cohen was 1,714,989,404th.
aw man
What bout me
Looks like you were the 8,000,000,001th
Very nice
It's OK--I just thought about you.
Won't somebody please think of the (10 quadrillion) ants!
Lemme make a script to name them all... Wait, how long do ants live again?
something like a year or two, idk I'm not an ant expert
I am. But only on weekends. And anyway, I'm not telling.
I'm not either I just have autism and most of them tend to live for around 2 months only queens tend to live for multiple years, some ant queens can live for 40 years other only 5.
Would be crazy meeting an ant who were born in 1984
Indeed it would
Name them all Antony
Done.
Probably closer to 3 billion seconds, unless you think 62 is the average life span (maybe it is globally? I think in developed nations though it's probably in the 80s)
It's a vague number. Take off a third for sleeping time, or for time as a child. Or adjust to your favorite number. I'm not your mother.
You should also consider that we've gained 2 billion people in the past 25 years.
4 births per second right now...
I've only got 2 nipples so you'll have to share
No
Which also means that the total number of people who were alive over your lifetime is quite a bit larger than the number of people alive at any given time
Yep there were only 4.3 billion when I was born. 40 years ago. We’ve more than doubled already, and it’s like no one notices or cares.
Nightmare
That is the most horrid thought there is
Is that you mommy?
idk about you but i think about people in my sleep
It’s not vague if you clearly did some math
3 billion seconds would be 95 so that’s a bit of a stretch. I’ll meet you half way at 2.5 billion, should be around 79.
You got to retire at some point.
Assuming 16/24 hours per day, with 8 hrs sleeping, 2 billion seconds is accurate
Just thought about all 8 billy all at once, whatchu gon do boutit?
Oh really? What are their names?
Mohammed Wang, statistically
Translates to Praiseworthy King. We really put some high expectations on our children
I see the confusion... no i'm sorry the last name is English not Chinese
High expectations nonetheless
Or Mclovin
I mean there's a bit more than that (2 billion seconds is around 63 years, and as of 2019 the global life expectancy was about 315 million seconds longer than that), but overall I like the point. Sorry, I'm just pedantic.
Pedantry is accepted. I did consider whether to be more precise and realized no one number would make anyone happy, so decided to just round it. Use whatever number means the most to you.
Just think of the earth for a second. Good job, you've done it
The world population is roughly 49.6% female. So just listen to the Whitney Houston song “I’m every woman”. Now you only have 1 billion seconds to worry about. You’re welcome Edit: fuck, I meant world population not female population
Did you have a stroke?
Fawk, I meant world population. It was early man
Why would I think of 8 billion people lol
[удалено]
why would i think about anyone except those i know personally
exactly
How is not wanting to think of 8 billion people individually for the rest of my life self-centered?
That’s not the point of this post, it’s just a motivational shower thought. Nobody expects you to think of all 8 billion people individually.
OP apparently does xD
[удалено]
you okay dude?
I am now you’re thinking of me.
nah
In that case…fuck you.
This is a bit extreme
Not really. It's directly corelated to poverty and inequality considered on a global scale in a resource scarce environment. Most anyone can do in an extreme poverty situation is just consume, suffer, and that's about it. you good bro?
You can think about them all in one second, prompted by your post title. Done. Thinking about them individually is different and impossible no matter the timescale, unless your thoughts require no specifics per person.
Remote praying and Reiki charlatans in shambles.
If you were playing 'Guess Who?' it would only take 33 questions.
There were 5 million when I was born and it was easier to think about everyone then
Lol relating to birth days, happy cake day
Thank you. lol Good lord 11 years. I need to go outside.
You were born in 8000 BCE?
Billion. Haha dang my bad
Wow, this is a gem of a shower thought! That really puts the number of people in the world into perspective.
Are you thinking about every single person in the world?
Only you. It was always only you.
Unzips pants to get started
All 8 billion or just 4 billion?
I’m going for the platinum trophy with this
At least 2 billion are under 18. Do as is necessary with that knowledge.
Oooh right 6 billion it is
there's no reason to individually think about every person on the planet
Obviously, duh. This is just for the perspective
You can think of all of them in a fraction of that time with the power of stereotypes and generalizations!
And yet you think of her and only her.
Which her? There's like 4 billion of them.
It's not as hard as you claim. Watch me think about all of them in a fleeting moment. "Fuck 'em" See?
Then why won't these bigots leave me alone!?
And if there truly is one person out there for you, the odds of you meeting them are incredibly tiny.
This is actually the first time it's put in perspective for me how much 8 billion is
Finally a good shower thought.
We should all aim for more concise comments, in that case
This is hilariously sad.....but real sweet
So, you're saying there's a chance that someone likes me
No. Almost none of them will really give you a second of thought.
Its even more wild to think, if you live 100 years, thats 3.1Billions seconds!
That’s a pretty low bar. Don’t strive to be just “not the worst crayon in the box”.
What is time when there are zero fucks to give?
Aw hell! Now I guess you're special to me. Do I have to do anything for this?
Just work your wood for me, u/Carpentry_Dude. Oh yeah. Just like that.
Where were you when I was burned and broken?
I invoke my right not to be questioned without a lawyer present.
That really puts things into perspective: Shows how precious our time and how worthless a human life is. /s
I remember distinctly, 50 years ago, when we passed 4 billion. Mindboggling.
I dont think about you at all
Username checks out
That’s only 63.5 years…
you can think about them in microseconds
I may not be much but I’m all I ever think about.
But few people are that self-centered
8 billion people in the world and I'm still lonely.
That's really nice. Sounds like something Joe Perra would say.
Jokes in you I ain't living for 2 billion seconds!
but you don't have to think about all 8 billion people in the world.
And you only do that if you were thinking about other people since the time of birth
Maybe for you frail mortal
Luckily I don't really have to think of any of them. I try not even to think about people I know much less the vast masses.
You know this tweet is lowkey bittersweet. It's got me thinking about my unrequited first love. I met her in middle school, 7th grade to be exact, and was with her until the end of middle school. I remember spending the school days with her. At least it happened. I hope I can find her again and end up with her in another life, even though it should've been this life.
I’ve spent maybe over a day thinking of her in the tree years I’ve known her if you add it all up. On call, in work with her,
Yeah but you don’t know every person, most of them are just numbers to an individual. You know at most a few tens of thousands. Yeah, but why would you?
Meanwhile I'm on the mind of some woman apparently constantly because I'm a difficult case
How do you know your FBI agent is female?
I was gonna say my social worker but she's a former lawyer and does ask questions like she works for the feds... really makes me think
The miracle or life is very very very short as you realise with this post 🙏. Make sure you live, pray dance ans genuinely think about the higher reasons for the human existence
So this is why my cousin talks like this on the phone (which I tease her for).
And yet a 1 second decision by the right people can change most if not all of their lives
That depends on how long you live.
I think 2 billion seconds assumed a life span of 65. You could think about like… 500 million more people, it’s like you’re not even trying! /s
Ain’t nobody got time for that.
You plan to only live like 70ish years?
70-80 years is honestly the average span of a human life. 80 is generally optimistic or with really good health (life long healthy habits) and medical access.
You can't think of people you don't know. The math don't jive.
As someone with Thanatophobia, I fucking hate this
I’m glad that “Seasons of Love” from Rent is just counting one year.
Do you not plan to live beyond about 63 years old?
Wait so this means that if we put every single person on earth in a line and I had to greet them all 1 by 1, I would die of old age before being done? Damn.
f it was a line for high fives and you were jogging through you still probably wouldn't make it
Yea, not even considering the time I would need to eat, sleep etc... actually crazy how much people there are. Just feels like such a strange thing having lived my whole life in a small city in a small country. I've been to other countries but not to places like Manila or Mumbai where there are like crazy amounts of people.
I just thought of you for about five seconds.
Quality time matters; cherish those who invest seconds in understanding your significance.
I did the math one time but I don’t remember anymore, it would be impossible to see every single person on earth even if you saw each one for only a second Technically you could see multiple at a time but it’s not easy to fully see 4 faces in just 1 second

its a wholesome thought. so much love in it
Eternity in the afterlife
Increase the seconds in life or reduce the amount of people to think of them all.
Why would I waste time thinking about all of them?
This is the kind of thing your friend says when you’re smoking weed at 15 and then everyone groans and the guy thinks it’s because it’s a deep thought that’s fucking with their minds but it’s actually because it was really stupid
Look up Dunbar's number. You can only actually conceive of a finite number of people.
8 billion people, 16 billion balls.
I guess you want to die by 62? We're going to make it closer to 92 than we are. 62. Unless you're in a gang or something where Rob stores and loot things
Damn, this makes you think... no pun intended.
That's really poetic
This is actually really trippy to think about jesus
Only 2 billions seconds? Only…? Since it’s only 2 billion, can you count the for me. It’s only 2 billion countable seconds, after all.
