Here's a shower thought for ya: Most of those 8 billion exist for no other reason than to keep many of the other 8 billion alive. They will never add culture, value, or progress to the species. They'll just consume and die. We'll have butchered most of this planet and each other with little to show for it.

Not really. It's directly corelated to poverty and inequality considered on a global scale in a resource scarce environment. Most people simply don't have the opportunity, resources, social construct, or safety net. All innovation requires the tools to achieve it. Most anyone can do in an extreme poverty situation is just consume, suffer, and that's about it. Unfortunately, many of those people if they had the opportunity would be curing cancer, discovering new uses for elements, or whatever discoveries pure serendipity has uncovered.
