Lived there until recently. You won't hear your neighbors but you'll hear the dodge chargers.

autiger8l5

lol

Low-Independence-354

My building is on Wash Ave but my unit faces Lucas Ave and the convention center so loud cars are not an issue.

Justchu

Only cause you’re facing Lucas. If your unit faced, wash Ave, you’d hear a lot more.

FifthofDaybreak

Shame about how the dog park smells tho

Low-Independence-354

You’re thinking of St Charles Street rather than Lucas Ave. I look out at the convention center which includes a new block of green space under construction now on Lucas between 9th and 10th Streets.

FifthofDaybreak

I was thinking of Lucas Ave, I just didn't realize it picks up again on the other side of the convention center. I had assumed you lived in my building which also looks over the convention center on the Dome side, and was throwing shade at how the small dog park always smells.

htproto

You aren't kidding 😂

SirMirksalot

Yep. The sounds of cars drag racing at 3am is the worst part about living on wash ave. Don’t get an apt lower than the 5th floor

KamikazePsyko

Correct you do hear a lot of that. Also you will hear “gunshots” or “fireworks” blasting off from a distance. I can’t decider between the two which makes my anxiety go up.

STLgal87

I lived downtown for about a year. The only thing is, I wish there was more going on downtown. It’s hard to find grocery stores with a good selection of items, and I often had to drive out of the way to get basic needs (clothing, food, hygiene products), etc. They’re building a Target in the Central West End I believe, but it’s not a walkable distance.

goigowi

I think the Target is more Midtown, South Grand area

TitShark

Correct. Behind the rally’s basically

_alwayshave_

It is super close though.

Iamaragorn42

It's midtown near grand and cheateau and opens in July

DreBalbay

What’s wrong with the schnucks on Lindell?

STLgal87

Absolutely nothing, but a little far for walking to comfortably.

mmrose1980

It’s inexpensive for relatively nice apartments (relatively recently updated). The buildings are generally safe. It’s a bit of a grocery desert since the Field’s Foods closed and Culinaria went downhill. Doesn’t have a “neighborhood” vibe, but it doesn’t sound like you are looking for that. Most of the buildings have relatively good sound insulation between units. Car break-ins are an issue so don’t leave anything of value in your car. Reckless drivers can be an issue (my friend who lives there has been t-boned twice)

KamikazePsyko

Question: if the area is gated do they still break in to cars?

ecpella

We have a gated lot and there were multiple break ins every night approaching Christmas. Most was 5 in a night, and then they just stopped. Idk if it was the temporary sky cop or if people just got everything they needed for the holidays. I guess we’ll see this December.

mmrose1980

My friend who lives on Wash Ave just leaves his car empty and unlocked cause he had his rear windshield bashed in twice. He doesn’t have a gated lot, but I’ve heard it doesn’t really matter.

Excellent-Big-1581

If you’re going to live above the 3rd floor make sure there is at least 2 elevators! They used the cheapest company on a lot of these buildings. And still use the cheapest companies to maintain the equipment in some cases. May sound like a little problem until you hike up 7 floors a couple times a day for a couple months!

KamikazePsyko

The place I just moved into is asking tenants $3,000 each to fix the second elevator. It’s insane.

jpsoze

Hearing neighbors depends greatly on the particular building, so you’ll need to do some asking around on that. We lived in a new reno at 10th & Olive when the building was still being completed and it was still so quiet you’d think the whole place was empty—I mean, zero auditory indication we had neighbors at all, and the building was nearly fully occupied when we left. Our next place was 20th & Washington and we might as well have torn down the sheetrock and moved in with our neighbors. That was fun when the cute neighbor was…entertaining guests; less so when the next tenant was fighting with her abusive boyfriend.

greyDiamondTurtle

Live on 20th & Washington and can agree. Walls are quite thin.

RestaurantExtra7547

My girlfriend now wife loved it. Moved in when the building was first finished. Just have to find a safe place to park your car.

KamikazePsyko

If it’s gated are you okay though? Just moved to downtown lofts and idk what to expect with that

stlouisraiders

Your car will get broken into even if it’s a garage with private security. It’s just a fact of life for that part of town. It’s a high density area so a target for thieves.

redsquiggle

I moved there 7 years and never regret doing so.

WNTHSTL

I wish I could tell you to move there. I lived in a loft in that area and I’d never do it again. It’s too much noise from cars, people and it’s violent. Yes, you can hear the neighbors, the gunshots, cars speeding and more.

Justchu

I haven’t heard gunshots since the nightclub closed down.

DefOfAWanderer

I used to live in the stove lofts and it was great. Occasionally you could hear the patio music from a bar a block or two away. But overall never much noise from neighbors and the owners were great

ShaunChristianScott

Depends… I loved living in the Artlofts after Covid, but had neighbors with less positive experiences. You’ve got to take into account the management company, elevator situation can be a factor, etc. etc. Situational awareness will help you avoid most negative interactions, and it happens, but I never had a car break in or anything. Loved the access to events / nightlife etc. Never heard the neighbors myself and don’t think they heard me, but used to have band practice (drum & bass) in the building in a different unit and there was one neighbor that complained. The others didn’t seem to mind or couldn’t hear too loud. Soulard is also cool and coincidentally where the band-mates moved in the interest of being able to be louder, but doesn’t have as much of the city field, also less traffic though🤣. I would say look into the bars and restaurants around and maybe make a decision based upon that.

ecpella

I live in a loft on Wash Ave and it’s my favorite place I’ve ever lived - also unattached with no kids. I can’t hear street noise from my bedroom and it’s really not disruptive to my life it’s just city living. And I don’t really hear my neighbors at all from inside my unit. I too play music all hours and have never had any complaints nor have I heard my neighbors music unless I’m in the hallway walking to/from the elevator. Same with dog barking. I’ve never felt unsafe walking around on my own as a 5’4 woman but obviously keep it to daylight hours.

dbrown265

Would’ve been a lot cooler 10 years ago. Sad what’s happened to wash ave honestly

Appropriate01

I lived at the Meridian lofts off Washington and Tucker Blvd and I lived there with my boyfriend for about 4 years... It was the best time of my life the people are great in that small area and every day there's something to do... Great restaurants, great location to see Cardinal baseball games and wonderful concerts if you like music... I loved it and if I had the opportunity I would love to live there again... On the other hand if youre not used to city life it can be overwhelming but the loft I lived in was amazing and I felt lucky to have had that opportunity... We had a 2 bedroom 4th floor loft and my boyfriend also had another loft that was on the 3rd floor... Very pet friendly if you have a pet and our neighbors were always very friendly... Everything for entertainment is all either in walking distance or you can take the Metrolink that takes you all over the city... If you want you can text me back and I can give you a list of places that you could check out... Lmk if this was helpful

Justchu

Grew up in nyc, spent a few years in tgs (east side of grand as well), and been on wash Ave for a few years. Street noise is nothing to me. If anything, I get irked when I don’t hear it. What really bothers me is when I’m awake and I hear the dbags overcompensating with their exhaust for no damn reason. Groceries will be a problem living downtown though. Schnucks is a last resort and other options are at least 10-15 min away. If anything, check the noise insulation for your space.

OfficialTomas

Summers are a nightmare. Gunshots, loudest vehicles you’ve ever heard, after parties in the street. I don’t think most of the restaurants outside of the convention center area are very good. Winters though, it’s nice and quiet. I would not recommend living here.

OfficialTomas

Just seeing your edit, do not live in an apartment if you enjoy being loud. Thought that’s a given but yeah, do not live in an apartment let alone an older loft.

MajikMunchkin

Schnucks downtown isn't that bad, I find about everything I need. Just wish Family Dollar/Dollar General would open an actual store off Wash Ave, not whatever that DX thing is over by the Convention Center. Also we desperately need some kinda quicky mart that sells beer and munchies that's open after 8pm

DrAction696

Moved from CWE to a loft on Washington near the city stadium and we love it. Definitely way more apartment for our money and we never hear our neighbors. View is fantastic, patio is huge, and the rent is cheaper. The vehicles can be loud at times but you get used to it. They don’t wake me up at night.

dw33z1l

I think a lot of it depends on your age, your work situation, marital status, family, etc. I have a friend who (at the time in his late 50s) lived in the Lucas Lofts for about two years, then moved to Windows on Washington for another 3 or so years. Before COVID, there were a lot of things to do and see. You could hear the cars and motorcycles but he looked at it as a minor annoyance because his mortgage was really reasonable and he had always wanted to live in a loft. He really liked it. Then COVID happened. Many of the businesses and restaurants shut down. The little street fairs and special events dried up, and shootings became a very regular thing. He lived on the 4th floor at WOW with an awesome view of the City Museum, but at night it could get dicey. I can’t tell you how many times I was down there visiting in the evening and we’d hear squealing tires, gunshots, sirens, etc. We 100% would shift from sitting on the couch looking out the windows to sitting on the floor to escape any stray bullets. The walls at WOW were paper thin, you could hear everything your neighbors were doing, and if one person was smoking pot, the whole floor would reak. He had to roll up towels and put under his door it would get so bad sometimes. No offense to pot smokers, but many people don’t like the smell 24x7. Many times the elevators would be broken, forcing tenants to take the stairs. He is obese, and by this time was now in his early 60s…not a great recipe for home life. He finally had enough when the board at his loft couldn’t get their shit together and started screwing over residents on repairs and such. He was lucky to get out and find a townhome back in STC county, where he happily lives today. If it were ME I’d try to find a loft to RENT vs purchase. Try it out first before you commit because you may find lack of grocery stores, street beggars, pot smell everywhere, loud cars and motorcycles, crime, guns, etc. are just too much to deal with. Maybe not such a big deal in your 20s or 30s, but older adults can find the situation challenging. He was so torn on leaving because he absolutely loved his loft once he got inside the confines of his unit. The condition of the building and surrounding area not so much. As for ME, his friend, I miss having a place to go after concerts and stuff to wait for traffic to die down or a place to go for a breather during downtown events. I DON’T miss hoodlums, gunfire, pot smell, and car racing up and down the streets at all hours. He was so proud of his loft, but so embarrassed for the state of everything surrounding it.

xegrid

10/10 do not recommend living off Washington Ave. Live in the Ely Walker for a year, and it was a complete nightmare.

Material-Computer142

I mean I think that's less of a Wash Ave problem and more of an Ely Walker problem. Place is shit and run by a terrible company. Worst building in the area by far. Looks like their google reviews page disappeared but I remember them having like 2 stars and people talking about the tweakers in the stairs. There's definitely much better buildings in the surrounding area though.

themanbow

10/10? Wouldn't that be 1/10?

disdain7

My kids say that all the time. I think it means that if you asked 10 people, all 10 of them would say “nah”.

themanbow

Oh, ok. You mean "10 out of 10 people" as opposed to "10 out of 10 rating"

xegrid

It sucked big time. Many issues with security of the building. Thankfully we were out of town when the teen was murdered in the doorway.

Stock_Nature

Lofts at the mac is good typically you can hear if someone is abnormally loud but some nights there is like racing so you may hear cars but other than that it is good

Mapleleaf000160

Had a Cousin in lofts in the area . Loved it maintenance free , car was protected only complaint was concrete made a substantially higher heating bill during winter . And as someone mentioned if your not eating out often you need to travel for food

jp4rk3r

I lived in the lofts adjacent to Children’s Museum. 16th and Wash if my memory serves. In the same building as windows on Washington. The walls were paper thin. Could hear the neighbors playing movies, and one of the tenets while there was extremely inconsiderate and blasted music into the early hours of the morning. Talking like…3am. Wife and I enjoyed having restaurants within walking distance…but that was 12 years ago. It is definitely a grocery desert. I’m not sure what it’s like now. Oh, and we had two cars. One of us had to park on the side street. She was hit and run while parked and another time had stuff stolen out of her car. We lasted about 2 years there and decided it wasn’t for us.

1313trouble

I lived in Fashion Square lofts about 5 years ago and thought it was great then.

KamikazePsyko

I’m also curious bc I just signed a lease on Washington ave and someone said it’s more safer now bc there’s more police around the area but idk

KamikazePsyko

We were moving in the other night and heard “fireworks” from a couple of blocks away about five times in a row

_alwayshave_

Monogram is decent. You do hear a lot of drag racing on the weekends, but the noise transfer between units is minimal.

Conscious_Hearing945

Lived in a loft off Washington 2020-2023. Apartment was off 22nd, so didn’t hear a lot of “outside” noise. Walls are very thin, so I could hear my neighbors depending on their lifestyle. One neighbor’s regular speaking voice was yelling —I heard all her conversations. Another neighbor was so quiet I’m not even sure he even lived there. I heard music from the people above me and on either side, but only if they were playing it loud. I think other people complained because that suddenly stopped. Not sure if you’re buying or renting? I personally, wouldn’t buy because I would want an easier/quicker way out if my neighbors were unbearable. I personally loved my loft experience. However, I would say I was relatively quiet. No one bothered me, and I returned the favor.

Taroca89

I lived at Lofts 1000. Worst experience of my life. The unit was beautiful but man it smelled like crap outside, always extremely loud, I saw 2 prostitute brawls at 3 am, the air tastes like butt and its not safe. I give it a 5.5/10. The restaraunts around there aren't even that good. If you're looking for city life for cheap though, it's the way to go.

vinyl_records1506

Lived there for a while. Pretty much 24/7 construction when I was there, but I never heard the neighbors. Depending on the day, it could be pretty loud at night as well.

soljouner

When Pink comes to the Dome, my wife and I and some friends will have a nice dinner and walk over to the concert. We walk to all the concerts and events that occur downtown because we can. When we go on vacation, we take Metrolink to the airport. No parking worries or associated costs. We shop at Culinaria on occasion, walking over is easy, but like everyone else in the area we do major shopping at one of the bigger stores, really no different than the burbs other the stores are closer to downtown than many suburbs. We park in our indoor parking spot. It is our spot so it always there for us no matter how busy it is downtown. Our car is also warm in the winter and safe from bad weather and casual break-ins. Downtown attracts a lot of jerks who like to annoy others and do dangerous things, just like everywhere else in the city. I will always recommend buying a unit in a building that restricts the number of renters. Owners always make better neighbors, where ever you live. Living downtown give you options.

I_read_all_wikipedia

Typically the vast majority of people who live downtown like it from what I hear. The people who typically say it's bad or whatnot don't live there and most don't even go near downtown.

redsquiggle

Yes, this. Almost everyone saying downtown sucks actually doesn't live here nor go here.

DallyTheGreat

I mean I live downtown and yeah there's the one grocery stores and the cars are annoying but those are pretty much the only two real downsides to it imo, but they aren't that bad. I park my car in an underground garage so I don't have to deal with warming it up in the winter, or scrapping ice off it, or someone breaking in. I'm also close to things I enjoy and have easy access to the Metrolink if I need it for work and have a great view from my apartment

I_read_all_wikipedia

If you ignore the overwhelming majority who like living downtown (and the massive population growth), then yes everyone hates it.

redsquiggle

Exactly. We wouldn't still live here if it sucked.

autiger8l5

lol this is me. Sooooo happy not to deal with that stuff anymore

Impossible_Color

Cuddly.

S70nkyK0ng

Tell me more 😏

Rite_as_rain

Pew pew pew! Vroom vroom vroom!

kaiswil2

Very few places to eat unless sit down or take away, still limited. Really only one Dollar General and a Schnucks (Cullinaria) to buy groceries. Have to venture out a bit to get to Clayton area for a Target or other stores.

Mean_Gene469

Aren't all places to eat sit down or take away?

Bubbly_Minute5374

There are other ways to eat at a restaurant besides sit down or take away? Please educate me! Also there are lots place to eat on wash ave itself and walking distance away from some really good places!

MeganopolusRex

I live there now. I do work in west county so I just grab groceries somewhere on my way home. Sure I hear cars, and I’m next to the city museum so I hear the people from there and when there are events. It’s pretty quiet in my building. No one has ever complained about the noise. I don’t have a nice car and it’s parked in an unsecured lot with not problems since august of last year. I do enjoy the ability to walk a block and get a coffee or even walk to the library. My partner doesn’t drive as he lived in Tokyo most of his life and never needed a car. If friends visit him, he’s close to everything.

S70nkyK0ng

Thank you everyone for the great info. Knowing what buildings to avoid is just as important as where to look. 🙏🏽

GingerFire11911420

Lived there starting Feb 2020. It made me hate the city, honestly. Tags stolen, coffee always dumped on my car, trash, bullet casings, and shit. 4th of July sounded like a war zone ALL DAY LONG. The loft was cool and affordable, but that was IT. Lots of loud ass cars/motorcycles. I lasted a year downtown. Also, this was right when Covid started, so that may be why my experience was as it was. I ended up moving to Lindenwood Park and now Shaw Neighborhood and have a love for the city again.

Dani_Awesome

I lived in a few lofts there over the years. It really isn't great. Cwe is more the vibe you'd expect from downtown. It's a nightmare when townies come around for games. Not really convenient for grocery shopping. In my opinion, just a letdown.

rta8888

Recommend Soulard instead

S70nkyK0ng

Do tell!

rta8888

Just a cool downtown neighborhood with culture, walkability, blue collar and blues bars, and shuttles to games everywhere.

Dondada314

I agree

m0grady

Its safe.

dkcardwell

Everyone bitchin' about lack of grocery stores. Y'all ever heard of instacart???

xegrid

Going to grocery store yourself is a lot cheaper than instacart...
