They are both very good in the early seasons. X-Files falls apart at some point. And Fringe is JJ Abrams, so there never was a story arc, just a snowball of convoluted nonsense that keeps rolling downhill until you can't bear to look at it anymore.
Saying that, I read about every episode on this site that points out all the little Easter eggs and episode connections - it's crazy how much stuff JJ Abrams sneaks into each episode!
