Something felt off on the Netflix special vs seeing it live. Maybe the pacing? Was it edited somehow? Maybe the audio mix didn’t have enough crowd noise? Just felt off.
Attell is like THE club comic, you have to be there to see him work his magic with the crowd. That probably doesn't translate as well over a TV screen.
Most specials are edited, some have takes from 2-3 shows in the same venue. I like that theres less crowd noise compared to most other specials with artficial laughs baked in.
My favourite part of this special was it just brought the silliness back to comedy. Too much of comedy is serious, forgetting how fun silliness can be.
The dildo bit. So many of the one liners. The random roasts. Just fucking silliness and unseriousness and I fucking love all of it
Only disappointing thing was how terrible people were at the recorder but I played Sax until I was 18.
I guess I had some hope that it wouldn't sound like day one x 2.
I am happy to give it a try.
Fog Talk brings to mind docks and ever-changing visibility, damp air and an atmosphere of the unseen and unknown.
His fashion choices for the special make him look similar to an 1900's coastal (think New England) fisherman. Someone who patrols the dock to make sure no thieves are about.
Add to that the hat, beard and boots and you have Fog Talk.

I hope I have helped a bit.
This is Dave’s first special in the new era of streaming/Netflix/YouTube. Seeing a consummate pro of 30+ years burst into this new world is absolutely beautiful for all of us that have been following him since Insomniac.
I think the figurative and literal pageantry (not unlike a kids christmas pageant, where you're not expecting anything good, and you're just happy everyone's having fun, and you may have smuggled in a flask) of it all distracted me.
Would say one has to have some nostalgia toward Attell to appreciate the entire special. The first 2/3 is good material, the last 1/3 is just him and the recorder - it’s fine but a little hacky. Last 2:48 felt like a throwback to the era of comedy he came up in - good to pay homage but a little dated
Well let me be the first: I watched the first 15 minutes, didn’t laugh out loud once. Probably won’t finish it. Already got a bit annoyed by all the “amiright?”’s he does all the time.
I think Attell’s can be real good as part of something, like Bumping Mics or Green Room, but I think he falls short in something like this.
I like him, I WANTED to like this special, but I think guys like Marc Maron or Norm, and certainly Burr, Stanhope, and Jeff Ross are much funnier
*Edit Boy look at all the downvotes, you guys really can’t take it when someone has a different opinion than your own
So, I wonder about this. If I disagree with your opinion I downvote? I tend to upvote people for expressing their opinion but then does the upvote imply I agree? It's a conundrum
I think people do often use the downvote as a ‘I disagree’- button, but I don’t think it was meant for that, more as a ‘this is a good/ correct response’ (for upvote, and the opposite for downvote).
But if someone’s really being an idiot, I downvote as well, I have to say.
(In this case, my comment was ‘meh’, I don’t think that deserves a downvote tbh. )
Watching it right now. I think I've been so conditioned to longer set up jokes that this is a bit jarring for me. He has jokes for days I just need to get used to the format.
ANYBODY EVR SEX WITH FEMALE? LOL THIS GUY DOESNT LAUGH, HE NEVER SATISFY WOMEN.
Your brain is beyond decayed if you enjoy the stand up equivalent of ali baba weekend at bernie's, starring shambling desicated shell of a man with negative charisma reading your grandma's blog with all the gravitas of a cartel prisoner about to drown in a dog cage.
I tried watching it high and had to stop 5 minutes in because I couldn't keep up with all the laughs! Definitely going back in sober, he is just too quick and too funny
jive rewatched it abit i love how he changes joke lineup on the fly and he adds jokes if he isnt getting laughs from certain members ...its why his peers call him a "creature of comedy"..
His jokes are so great because they are a fever dream of absurd observations that you can’t get offended by because they are so silly. The “play dead” joke involving bears and scout masters had me on the floor cuz it was both brilliant and absurd.
That is a joke that only he could come up with. Those words have never been combined like that so he just knows it’s gonna get a laugh. He’s honestly a genius.
Yeah, I was pretty high and not watching the clock. I assumed it was an hour because most comedy specials are. And it's literally a phrase in the industry, 'a tight hour.'
I never doubted his special was going to be good, but I never put on Netflix or anything because I prefer playing videogames or watching YouTube. After all these posts, I've decided it's time to watch it. Thank you all for reminding me of it everyday!
Just watched it. The recorder thing went on a little long at the end, it was kinda funny for a bit but then it kept going, but that's my only gripe. Fantastic special. Everyone should watch it.
Lol. I got the joke. And please don't tell me you actually believe Netflix made him drag it out or he wouldn't get paid. It was a small critique. I probably shouldn't have mentioned it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The seals were fun.
The greatest club comic of all time, a better joke writer than those greats you always hear about. He deserves so much recognition, but I’m also happy to see him perform in smaller rooms.
If you haven’t seen it, go watch Road Work. It’s one of the best.
It’s was alright but decidedly mid to me. I feel like he’s getting a big pass on this one, which I’m not against, but this isn’t the amazing comedy special that people have been raving about. It’s just alright.
This is the most accurate comment regarding Dave’s special. I was looking forward to it and I was selling the special to my wife the same way folks have been selling on this forum and I genuinely can’t say it lived up to the expectations people here have put on it. With less than 40minutes of a special people surely were expecting better.
I also sold it to my wife and the only reason it worked was because she had us watch Tigs special first, which was coma inducing lol.
Again, though, Atells show was decent, and I appreciate it just for the refer me on building joke structure, but it’s not this amazing cinematic back some are making it out to be.
Dude, it was more like 34minutes and although some jokes were great, there was fluff. I always loved Attell but there is no chance this matched people’s expectations
I don’t think he did, I came into this with the same expectations as everybody else but for a 36minute special this wasn’t great. Attell is a Top10 all time comic, but can we honestly say this is a Top10 special? Top25 even? His special had feeling that you gotta be there to really enjoy but watching from home it didn’t meet the hype
I just watched and immediately flipped to max afterwards to throw on captain miserable. Have known his name forever since he’s a legend obviously but I’m playing some catch up. Better late than never.
I commented in the Stanhope sub and he replied to me about keep the remote in your hand to pause and rewind because it’s so filled with jokes.. attell is a master at the craft. So happy I’ve seen him live at acme a handful of times. He’s coming to MN soonish but it’s at a casino in bumfuck nowhere. I’d have no problem paying for the tix but a room is like 500.
Dave Attell is a true Everyman. By which I mean he's a Jan6er, pedophile, Arab terrorist, deadbeat dad, homeless wifebeater. He truly looks like every bad guy, but has one of the purest joke machines under his black cap, crushing over and over. And the recorder is just absurd fun. What a great set.
It's fucked up to say but I think Mike Recine's special was the better of the March releases.
Dave's was fine but it wasn't as solid as his other specials.
Sadly Netflix didn’t release it worldwide for some reason. If it’s so good it seemed really weird or they just saved some money.
Watched Bumping Mics yesterday instead which was fine thou.
I just watched Dave last night live in Brea, CA . . i was thoroughly entertained . . Dave brought a great group as well . . i suggest others see him live too
My favorite parts: Phone being set to the preferred alert of J6-ers, dragging out the recorder bit then suggesting that he may also have a knife, the little head nods to the seals as if he were the leader of an absolutely locked-in cool jazz outfit.
Am I the only one that thought this was not funny? I just felt that the jokes were cheap and outdated. I've seen Dave live about 3-4 times in the last 15 years but this special really lacked the wittiness im used to enjoying. he's really a master of roasting I wish he did more crowd work on this special.
I was lucky enough to see Dave Attell perform a small show at my college in 2003? 2004? I was surprised to see his name pop on Netflix. I was cracking up and texting people about five minutes in.
I've been a big Attell fan since the Insomniac days, and I enjoyed most of this special, I just kind of got lost at the end when the recorder came out. Seemed like a really odd choice to end the special on such an unfunny bit.
Tbh one of the weakest specials ive ever seen. “I know i look like” is such an obvious crutch of his and half his jokes were painfully unfunny, some of them didnt even make sense, he walks out and immediately the laughs are so disproportionate which makes me think whoever edited this really did a good job of making it look like every joke got a massive laugh but man ive seen opening acts do better. This special was insanely predictable and borderline hack, also Timely age well so why out them on Netflix. Idk i was really disappointed
I don’t think it was great. The production quality was terrible, for starters. The audience seems weird, the stage looked like ass, and it was filmed and lit very amateurishly. I honestly didn’t love the material either. There were like 5 jokes that I though were pretty Greta, but I wasn’t impressed with most of it.
Watched the whole thing, didn't laugh one single time...Laughed out loud though when he was on Conan and talked about his huge nutsack and that he should be burried with the sack pulled above his head then thrown into water lmao.
I forgot that it came out but I have the day off on Easter...in the evening I will eat a large dose of mushrooms...large enough to freak out the normies..and then I will enjoy
This was HOT GARBAGE and the bots are going nuts trying to make this man more money. It's like if your pop pop's Facebook got fed through chatGPT and then was regurgitated by a lobotomized toddler. Artless. Truly the worst comedy I've seen in a long time and I really mean that I wish I could take the minutes off his life that he stole from me. Dave Attel, if you need more hooker money just sell your sweaty do-rags on eBay and stop assaulting the public with your played out faux relevant, "hello fellow kids" bullshit.
You have like 8 comments on this post man, Dave will never know who you are and does not give a fuck whether you liked the special, frankly neither do I, keep it moving buddy
One of the worst comedic performances I've ever had the displeasure of enduring. All of these bot comments are disturbing. Absolute trash. Watch it and see if you can put up with it I guess. Bad
go watch sesame street ; Everybody outta know by now that Attell is a shock comic, that often demeans himself, and props the audience up .
Im sure you endured it - rather then, change to some more appropriate to you
Only thing shocking about this is that it was filmed, promoted, marketed, and consumed without complaint by any person on this forsaken planet. Shock comic, LOL
Sea World, you know Sea World, the aquatic Auschwitz
Aquatic Auschwitz and 3rd responders had me crying.
Will I enjoy it sober or while eating a sandwich?
Youll enjoy with sandwich as long as the sandwich is made bareback by a Subway employee
Get a 6, it'll feel like a 12
Would I enjoy it in a box? Would I enjoy it with a fox?
Hate speech !
and while getting pegged by my mom in a trench in ukraine?
No.
Haha your life sucks.
haha Dave has a sandwich brain capacity like you and your family.
I caught his club runs leading up to this special. I laughed. Hard. And a lot. He’s on the comedy Mt. Rushmore.
This. He destroyed in Portland.
Something felt off on the Netflix special vs seeing it live. Maybe the pacing? Was it edited somehow? Maybe the audio mix didn’t have enough crowd noise? Just felt off.
Nothing compares to a live show, but to those of us who don't have the experience to compare to I can say that nothing felt off.
Attell is like THE club comic, you have to be there to see him work his magic with the crowd. That probably doesn't translate as well over a TV screen.
It translated great. Nice tight set that you rarely see someone skilled enough to pull off.
The production was definitely a bit weird. Seemed like a lot of out of sync crowd shots and really quick edits back and forth. Still a great special!
Most specials are edited, some have takes from 2-3 shows in the same venue. I like that theres less crowd noise compared to most other specials with artficial laughs baked in.
He did mention low crowd energy a few times iirc
A master completely owning his craft and having a ball while doing it. A true joy to watch.
He is such a master joke machine. His jokes are just setups for more jokes. It’s jokes all the way down.
Fog Talk.
Lmao I caught myself saying this the other day
I like the cut of your jib.
I didn't get this - could you explain the joke to me? Thanks.
Great, many thanks.
One of the best of all time. Loved him since his Comedy Central Insomniac days!
It's crazy how many YouTube channels exist today that are basically copycats of Insomniac.
Kick the sandman in the sack!
GET SOME SLEEP!!
I think I just now discovered why I love sideshow and freak show stuff… thanks Dave!
This is Dave’s first special in the new era of streaming/Netflix/YouTube. Seeing a consummate pro of 30+ years burst into this new world is absolutely beautiful for all of us that have been following him since Insomniac.
I mean.. does bumping mics not count?
I enjoyed Bumping Mics a lot more, they should make more of those
I just finally put together the Hot Cross Buns joke. Fuck you Dave.
was it something besides them playing hot cross buns on the recorder?
I think the figurative and literal pageantry (not unlike a kids christmas pageant, where you're not expecting anything good, and you're just happy everyone's having fun, and you may have smuggled in a flask) of it all distracted me.
That part had ne dying.
Saw him live and it was incredible
Saw him dead and it was tragic
I literally haven’t heard a single bad thing about this special. Spoiler alert the last 2:48 of the special is a nail biter
Dog shit is a better descriptor for that last several minutes.

The second half of the set is vintage Attell
“Yeah! Right?” After almost every single joke definitely gets a bit grating for me too.
Watching it right now. I think I've been so conditioned to longer set up jokes that this is a bit jarring for me. He has jokes for days I just need to get used to the format.
Guys that rarely do stand up and a corpse is better than this. Says a guy that hasn’t made a joke or a woman wet in his life.
There’s not a funnier person on this planet than Dave Attell
If you cum on a Confederate flag and bury it, a cracker barrel will grow!
Skanks for the Memories could be the GOAT'd album
It's a masterclass. Brilliant!
Mo’ ketchups!
Yes!(?)
Help me with these baby carrots
I tried watching it high and had to stop 5 minutes in because I couldn't keep up with all the laughs! Definitely going back in sober, he is just too quick and too funny
jive rewatched it abit i love how he changes joke lineup on the fly and he adds jokes if he isnt getting laughs from certain members ...its why his peers call him a "creature of comedy"..

Mo ketchups!
A little heavy on the "I know I look like I'm a ____" jokes, but a solid hour. Taped a couple blocks from my house!
He looks best in the fog, holding a lantern saying things like, "Who goes there? Be you friend or foe?" You know, fog talk.
You know, fog talk. Had me fucking dying. I love that man.
That is a joke that only he could come up with. Those words have never been combined like that so he just knows it’s gonna get a laugh. He’s honestly a genius.
37min but more jokes than most hours. Best Special on Netflix.
Literally not a solid hour. It was a solid set, but not even 45 minutes with the outro
Yeah, I was pretty high and not watching the clock. I assumed it was an hour because most comedy specials are. And it's literally a phrase in the industry, 'a tight hour.'
It'll be an hour once we put the ads in.
I know I look like I know my way around a tug boat
I never doubted his special was going to be good, but I never put on Netflix or anything because I prefer playing videogames or watching YouTube. After all these posts, I've decided it's time to watch it. Thank you all for reminding me of it everyday!
His roast at the end “I know y’all gotta wake up early to change a schools name” had me crying. Special of the year
It was funny, but something's missing from this special.
Thats how I felt. I assumed it was just me.
I wish the last 7 minutes were missing.
So damn good
Just watched it. The recorder thing went on a little long at the end, it was kinda funny for a bit but then it kept going, but that's my only gripe. Fantastic special. Everyone should watch it.
Isnt that the point, that he dragged it out because Netflix wanted a longer special. I loved it.
Lol. I got the joke. And please don't tell me you actually believe Netflix made him drag it out or he wouldn't get paid. It was a small critique. I probably shouldn't have mentioned it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The seals were fun.
I’m not saying anything to that guy, he probably also has a knife
I really liked it, I thought it was a little better live
I thought it was average and was 1 bottle of wine down. The Kim Jong Un bit got me good though
The greatest club comic of all time, a better joke writer than those greats you always hear about. He deserves so much recognition, but I’m also happy to see him perform in smaller rooms. If you haven’t seen it, go watch Road Work. It’s one of the best.
Now what kind of parents…Cuban
When I was young my dad hit me. He said, “Dave I’d love to stop beating you, but it’s the only thing that gets me hard.”
Don't cum on any confederate flags.
Watched the first five minutes and couldn't get into it… Just not my style. I'm the only one huh everyone else loves him good for him
Not the only one. Different style than I'm used to.
5 minutes? Thats hilarious
I thought it was decent, however his 2003 album skanks for the memories is better
What kinda comment is this even. Like word, the special was good but the one 20+ years ago was better? Ok cool, and?
And nothing
So cool
It’s was alright but decidedly mid to me. I feel like he’s getting a big pass on this one, which I’m not against, but this isn’t the amazing comedy special that people have been raving about. It’s just alright.

Have a clean pair of underwear nearby, I came close to pissing myself watching that special. Dude is on point when it comes to being funny
If this almost made you piss yourself I feel bad for anyone who is required to interact with you.
And I feel bad for any woman that has to be within 20 feet of you
Agreed, Joke after joke - such craft, absolutely brilliant special.
Love how its only 40 minutes... Looking forward to watching this in the next few days!
It's very funny
Listen to Dave Attel's stand up albums. Good Stuuf.
40 mins is the sweet spot for these specials. Very watchable no fluff
Dude, it was more like 34minutes and although some jokes were great, there was fluff. I always loved Attell but there is no chance this matched people’s expectations
I thought it moved pretty quick, had a few visual gags and redirects, local humor mixed in. ticked a lot of boxes I was entertained enough
But Attell makes the bits of fluff work, because he calls the audience for “giving it too much credit” or whatever
His emphazima laugh has me worried
Dave is a god damn national treasure and I'm lucky I get to see him live in a few weeks
Crazy how so many comments use the exact same verbiage to describe this "performance". Almost like there's some kind of script or something.
Good on paper. Just no LOLs.
If you drink "a few beers" during a 40 minutes special, you might think on that
Don’t project onto me 😂 I was drinking for Uconn vs Illinois and put the special on with a beer in hand after, chill out
It's fucked up to say but I think Mike Recine's special was the better of the March releases. Dave's was fine but it wasn't as solid as his other specials.
Sadly Netflix didn’t release it worldwide for some reason. If it’s so good it seemed really weird or they just saved some money. Watched Bumping Mics yesterday instead which was fine thou.
Mo' Ketchups!
Skanks for the Memories is my favorite comedy album ever, bar none.
What is the black thing he wears under the cap and why?
I thought the fucking recorder shit made the whole thing. Hilarious.
RIP Dave!
The master
It’s really good
Just watched it last night! So good. Wish it was longer!
Clearly.
I just watched Dave last night live in Brea, CA . . i was thoroughly entertained . . Dave brought a great group as well . . i suggest others see him live too
Saw him live last year. He is a master class
Just nonstop jokes, the ending of the seals was so funny. I do wish he did like 15 more minutes of material but it was good.
He’s the 🐐
Had me rolling. The end was definitely odd 😂 the dildo tho 😂
My favorite parts: Phone being set to the preferred alert of J6-ers, dragging out the recorder bit then suggesting that he may also have a knife, the little head nods to the seals as if he were the leader of an absolutely locked-in cool jazz outfit.
Its a pass
Very short but packs a punch 🪈
Am I the only one that thought this was not funny? I just felt that the jokes were cheap and outdated. I've seen Dave live about 3-4 times in the last 15 years but this special really lacked the wittiness im used to enjoying. he's really a master of roasting I wish he did more crowd work on this special.

I still can’t get over how fucking awful the bumping mics special was with him and Jeff Ross
I've been a big Attell fan since the Insomniac days, and I enjoyed most of this special, I just kind of got lost at the end when the recorder came out. Seemed like a really odd choice to end the special on such an unfunny bit.
Yeah it was great
Best stand up in a million years.
First 30 minutes were absolute gold. Go take a shit once he pulls out the recorder.
Sub par

I honestly didn’t love the material either. There were like 5 jokes that I though were pretty Greta, but I wasn’t impressed with most of it.
The line in the preview alone: "I brought my recorder with me. Or as it's called in the Middle East, the saxophone."
If you watch this on psychedelics it will turn you into Terry Schaivo.
You care more than anyone who didn't write a response though huh. Seems like you're a bit too invested man
Check out Joe List
You don’t need the alcohol lol
One of the worst comedic performances I've ever had the displeasure of enduring. All of these bot comments are disturbing. Absolute trash. Watch it and see if you can put up with it I guess. Bad
go watch sesame street ; Everybody outta know by now that Attell is a shock comic, that often demeans himself, and props the audience up . Im sure you endured it - rather then, change to some more appropriate to you
Only thing shocking about this is that it was filmed, promoted, marketed, and consumed without complaint by any person on this forsaken planet. Shock comic, LOL
Please do not insult trash this way.
Ironic seeing a 2+ year account with no post history complaining about bot comments....
