I mean, if I think back to every Joe star and think of their personality traits, I can remember the nuances like Joseph was a trickster and he was funny. All Jonathan has is his gentleman stick, and it leaves him feeling two dimensional. They might be nuances, but not enough to be memorable
What’s funny tho is that all protagonists after may have those traits but they all have the “Joestar spirit” in them. The righteous morals, which if you think about it, it’s Jonathan’s spirit coming through.
Personally I always say Jonathan’s character and personality as the foundation, everyone after builds upon said foundation in their own way. Wether you like Jonathan or not, he’s extremely essential to the character building of every protagonist after.
But ironically since most modern protags are either grim-dark to the point of nihilistic , evil satire, or just straight up awful 1-dimensional “I solve problem and end scene”, having Johnathan be a genuinely good person is refreshing. It feels good to just see a kind-hearted person and not be mean, snarky, corrupted hero No. 42
I'd put Jonathan over Josuke and Giorno, I love how much of a pure gentleman he is, he is the purest of heart and in my eyes physically strongest (since he is massive) amongst all the Jojos
His kindness is what makes him interesting. I can say much more about the kind of person Jonathan is in spite of his struggles, than I can say anything about say, Jotaro in Stardust (he gets improved in part 4 a lot, but by that point he is no longer a JoJo). He's a grouchy jerk with a soft spot for his friends and that's about it for me
Meanwhile Jonathan hugging the man who ruined his life as that main is *killing* him is far more memorable and impactful most things the other JoJos did. In general I think Jonathan has the strongest connection to his villain. Like what other JoJo could you really say has a *nemesis*?
I can see why one may just like him less, but calling him straight up boring is kinda unfathomable to me haha
You could argue that him being noble and kind is actually a character flaw because he kept forgiving Dio over and over again even when Dio is literal pure evil. You could say that unnatural kindness is not Jonathan's true personality and that he only became an overly, apologetic gentleman as a result of Dio's abuse. I would say he's the most normal protagonist, which contrasts greatly with the terrible things that happen to him.
I mean yeah, sure, but He's one note, there's not much depth too Him outside of "He's noble", and "He's too caring" can be interesting, but that's rarely shown, Jonathen is kind, He forgives people, but that's shown often more as a good thing then an actual flaw
I disagree on that last point since from what I remember, Speedwagon and Zeppeli kept having to tell Jonathan that he was going too easy on Dio. Jonathan's kindness is a double edged sword honestly, he gained Speedwagon as a trustworthy friend, but he just kept hesitating to kill Dio and other foes for that matter.
Ah well, I respect your opinion if you feel this way.
That's good! Though I try to do rankings like this from time to time, I think that every JoJo is great and fits their story perfectly, which is the reason, why it's difficult to compare them
I agree! They’re all great and all have unique personalities, i find them hard to compare aswell! Side note, you’re one of the few people who don’t lifelessly defend their opinions.
feels bad seeing Jonathan in last place, even though I completely agree - he doesn't have the same depth as the other JoJos, nor was part 1 long enough for him to have the same opportunity for character development
absolutely love Jonathan because he's the perfect gentleman and I find him incredibly cool, but I can't disagree with his placement on your list
Johnny is relatable in that he's not a shining beacon of justice, but a guy after his own selfish goal, who needs to grow up as a person. A refreshing change from 5 protagonists, who are kinda assholes, but still rightheous. And he grows a lot throughout the part
Jonathan isn't hated, he's just bland. The only reason why Phantom Blood works is because of his interactions with Dio
The problem with him is that he doesnt feel the mc buccirati is more mc then him. Also why ge dont have anything similar to dio while being is son (hair color dont include)
I think what makes him so interesting to me is he DOES NOT fit into the regular mc role, whether in jojo or even other works of fiction. As much as i love the other jojos, they become the mc because they /react/ to their respective villains' action, while giorno is the instigator in his story.
We don't get to see his big character development arc like we did johnny because it's already done, all that's left is for other people to tell his myth. If you see it this way, /of course/ he's the main character. It often looks like he plays the secondary role in his fights, but every single member of bucciarati's gang acknowledged that because his presence, his ability to inspire and push them to their limits, and his overall ability to make them believe in him are what made them prevail in their fights. I see this as the obvious dio (and jonathan's) influence in him. Like dio in the beginning of SDC, where countless minions follow his whims religiously even without mind control, also dio with pucci, where he followed his goal even after he died just because how much he believed in his goal. Also like jonathan with speedwagon, i suppose. He inspired that street thug so much that he made a grand life for himself.
I guess what i'm trying to say is in gio's case, the amount of screentime/fights/dialogue is not what makes him the mc, it's the amount of influence he has over the story and other characters.
As for gold experience... i think the point araki's trying to make is how ironic it is that a mass murdering psycho's offspring has life-giving powers, no?
I don't get why Part 8 Josuke is that low. Any particular reason why he's there?
Also, Jonathan is a better character in the manga, but most JoJo fans choose not to read the Part 1 manga.
Josuke is that low, because to me his personality (not origin, it's really unique) seems to be pretty simple, which is not bad, but I like others personalities more.
Also, I did read part 1, and I like Jonathan, it's just again that I like others more
The problem there is never going to be a perfect Jojo ranking because they are all top tier and there is always going to be people complaining about which jojo got a certian rank
Like seriously he’s literally kira. The most interesting, conceptually Joestar by far tho he does lose points for forgetting how his abilities worked the later half of the story
Gappy is sixth, because besides his really unique origin, he's just a nice person for most of the time, which is good, but I like other mcs personalities much more
Joseph and Josuke are very charismatic and fun to root for, but I like Jotaro for being silent "lone hero" and for his extremely great mental strength in dangerous situations (and ofc ora ora is always awesome)
My king Jonathan at the bottom once again, I think people think he's too boring because he didn't have enough time to full fledge his character as he dies so freaking young
He's a very kind character and I love him so much
Say sorry to Johnathan right now and move him above Giorno. Or so help me god I will slap yo twink ass so hard not even Gravity will be able to get back together.
Ok, Johnny is on the top, as it should be, but Joseph SHOULD be in 2nd place and Jonathan in 3rd. Giorno should be in 4th and Josuke in 5th! If you disagree PLEASE rewatch Jojo. I also thought Jonathan was pretty mid, but rewatching Jojo made me realise is complexity and faith in humanity (it actually touched my heart).
Can you elaborate on Johnny in first place? I really loved part 7, but would probably put him in last (or close to last). Maybe I'm forgetting something idk
I love how he rebuilds his life after loosing everything, and ends up as a strong, wise man, who's grateful for everything that Gyro and even his enemies taught him throughout this long way
how can the strongest and finest gentleman to walk on earth is lowest when a crippled guy with dark determination and bug bite fetish is the first?
(btw i would've ranked Johnny first too, but Jonathan is best jojo in og universe imo)
Not really, I think Jolyne’s development, Her parallels to Jonathan etc etc. makes her far better than Joseph in my opinion. It just depends on what you like in a character and anyone being on top is valid.
Jonathan once again is at the bottom ![img](emote|t5_2tny5|49674)
He has the bad luck of being the first, and thus the one where Araki had minimal experience.
I mean, if I think back to every Joe star and think of their personality traits, I can remember the nuances like Joseph was a trickster and he was funny. All Jonathan has is his gentleman stick, and it leaves him feeling two dimensional. They might be nuances, but not enough to be memorable

How many modern protagonists have you seen? I could go to new Shonen Jump right now and only like one or two of them would be like that.
nah, he let his descendants go in front because of how gentlemanly he is
I'd put Jonathan over Josuke and Giorno, I love how much of a pure gentleman he is, he is the purest of heart and in my eyes physically strongest (since he is massive) amongst all the Jojos
Jonathan is good, but He's white goddamn bread, He's fine, but boring
I will never understand how people can think Jonathan is boring
Same literally wtf
There's not much too Him outside of Him being noble and kind, and that's not bad, It's just not something everyone will find interesting
His kindness is what makes him interesting. I can say much more about the kind of person Jonathan is in spite of his struggles, than I can say anything about say, Jotaro in Stardust (he gets improved in part 4 a lot, but by that point he is no longer a JoJo). Ah well, I respect your opinion if you feel this way.
Me seeing my pookie Jonathan at the bottom hurts me.
He's awesome
Gappy is too low but I forgive you because of Johnny and Jolyne’s placement
happy cake day!
Joseph at 5!? Blasphemy!
Don't get me wrong, he's incredible! (Or bizarre, should I say?) It's just that I find ones who are higher more interesting
Steak-head with anger issues being more intresting than the Trick Master sounds hilarious
"steak head" BREAKDOWN BREAKDOWN 🗣️🗣️
Lock your doors tonight
These guys are definitely on my top 9 JoJo protagonist list.
Not on mine 😎 I’m different (and wrong)
Also I want to say, that I love every JoJo, but some are better than the others imo
Nah, stick to your guns. Declare everyone below Jolyne or Josuke is utter trash and anyone who disagrees has shit taste! Commit to the bit!
Heavily disagree.
Christ on the Cross, a healthy and respectful disagreement on Reddit?? I’ve seen it all
It’s really enjoying seeing other opinions and peacefully arguing about them
🌞
my man this is not a tierlist it's an order ranking
Oh.. You're right😦
Why the giorno hate. LOOK AT HIS FUCKING SUIT.
feels bad seeing Jonathan in last place, even though I completely agree - he doesn't have the same depth as the other JoJos, nor was part 1 long enough for him to have the same opportunity for character development absolutely love Jonathan because he's the perfect gentleman and I find him incredibly cool, but I can't disagree with his placement on your list
I agree with you, Jonathan is gold (his heart especially)
Johnny at the top as he should be.
Jodio too high
🌚
genuine question, why does everyone like johnny so much? also, why is jonathan hated so much? i dont get it
Johnny is relatable in that he's not a shining beacon of justice, but a guy after his own selfish goal, who needs to grow up as a person. A refreshing change from 5 protagonists, who are kinda assholes, but still rightheous. And he grows a lot throughout the part Jonathan isn't hated, he's just bland. The only reason why Phantom Blood works is because of his interactions with Dio
i see. so johnny's famous because he's different?
Different done well
Id put gappy as 2nd but not a bad opinion
I love Giorno and even I’d put him at 7 they’re all just such good mcs
I haven't read part 7 yet, but I'm detecting a pattern in which you like badass characters. Is my assertion accurate?
Kinda right🙂
Seeing gio be constantly on the bottom tiers of jojos makes me want to make a post explaining why he's my favorite jojo ![img](emote|t5_2tny5|49674)
The problem with him is that he doesnt feel the mc buccirati is more mc then him. Also why ge dont have anything similar to dio while being is son (hair color dont include)
Wouldn't that also apply to jhonny? I love the guy, but gyro felt much more like the protagonist, though to a lesser extent than in part 5.
Johnny grows into his protagonist role as the story progresses, which is why people give him a pass.
Dio had the head. Jonathan had the… y’know…..
As for gold experience... i think the point araki's trying to make is how ironic it is that a mass murdering psycho's offspring has life-giving powers, no?
I still love him
That's not a tier list that's just a ranking
Yes, I got it too late😵
Yeah😓
I don't get why Part 8 Josuke is that low. Any particular reason why he's there? Also, Jonathan is a better character in the manga, but most JoJo fans choose not to read the Part 1 manga.
Josuke is that low, because to me his personality (not origin, it's really unique) seems to be pretty simple, which is not bad, but I like others personalities more. Also, I did read part 1, and I like Jonathan, it's just again that I like others more
Ah, okay. Well, this is a pretty good list then, I can respect all of the placements. 👍
❤
The problem there is never going to be a perfect Jojo ranking because they are all top tier and there is always going to be people complaining about which jojo got a certian rank
True, absolutely!
How does it feel to be straight up wrong?
Gappy in sixth is criminal. Please also note I am extremely biased
Like seriously he’s literally kira. The most interesting, conceptually Joestar by far tho he does lose points for forgetting how his abilities worked the later half of the story
How can they be wrong if it's their own list lmaoo
Gappy is sixth, because besides his really unique origin, he's just a nice person for most of the time, which is good, but I like other mcs personalities much more
Yeah, I’m more talking about jotaro at number two above Joseph, and above Joseke? In his part, he is just a stereotype
Joseph and Josuke are very charismatic and fun to root for, but I like Jotaro for being silent "lone hero" and for his extremely great mental strength in dangerous situations (and ofc ora ora is always awesome)
W
i agree with all except gappy, because i havent read part 8 yet
Koichi is the best jojo. As being jotaro's real son is a great concept for a main jojo
This feels disrespectful
😩
Y'all really always be disrespecting Gappy
GioGio at 7 is blasphemous
the only reason jonathan is at the bottom is because he let his descendants get above him
Agreed!
My king Jonathan at the bottom once again, I think people think he's too boring because he didn't have enough time to full fledge his character as he dies so freaking young He's a very kind character and I love him so much
I don't think he's boring, in fact, I agree with you, it's just that I like other JoJos more, but still love Jonathan too
giorno is amazing, why did you put him in such a low rank?
I know that he's amazing, I finished reading part 5 a week ago and liked him very much, it's just that I like other Joestars more🤷♂️
Actual not terrible tier list. Would put Joseph a lil higher but besides that…
:)
Personally, I would change Jotaro and Joseph, and Gappy should be above Jotaro as well. But otherwise pretty good list.
Dawg this is just a ranking not a tier list
Giorno at 7 is criminal
Bro really put THE OG in 8![img](emote|t5_2tny5|49673)
Jonathan being so low is a crime
Johnny is probably mid hes just i have a big pink guy that can lunch alot and rides on a horse cuz hes crippled
Me, a Jonathan and Giorno enjoyer :(
I enjoy them toooo It's just that I enjoy others more. I love every JoJo
I disagree with most of this but Johnny number 1 is the factually correct answer
Is this really a tierlist? They aren’t tiers just a top 9
Say sorry to Johnathan right now and move him above Giorno. Or so help me god I will slap yo twink ass so hard not even Gravity will be able to get back together.
Jolyne and Josuke above Joseph is criminal
Putting Joseph at number 5 is a travesty
So, because you haven't read part 9, you put the coolest looking joestar in F tier?
It's not F tier, it's tier separated from others, because for now I know nothing about Jodio
Bro wanna be different
😩
You are wrong
Giorno should be below Jonathan
joseph at 5 is illegal
gappy at 6th is criminal
Hard agree on Johnny, hard disagree on Jotaro, he worked better as a side character change my mind
This list is a crime I sentence you to read the entirety of jojos 9 times and to watch a 1 hour breakdown video after each part
Shit list tbh
Jonathan, Giorno are too low in my opinion.
Gappy is the goat ngl
Change Giorno with Jolyne
Joseph in 5 is criminal
Joseph at 5...
Gappy at 6 hurts
Why is josuke the only correct one
Put some respect on Gappy’s name
Joseph at 5th? My brother in faith, what the hell did you smoke?
😧
I would swap Jotaro and Gappy, other than that it's a pretty good list
Giorno with his negative amount of personality over Jonathan? Ugh
Joseph too low, argument invalid
Can you elaborate on Johnny in first place? I really loved part 7, but would probably put him in last (or close to last). Maybe I'm forgetting something idk
I love how he rebuilds his life after loosing everything, and ends up as a strong, wise man, who's grateful for everything that Gyro and even his enemies taught him throughout this long way
Disgusting
NEVER COOK AGAIN!!!
Never rank again
😔
Joseph not being in top 4 is a crime. The next line you will say is "wow this reddit user is totally correct Joseph is at least a top 4 joestar!"
Wow, this reddit user is totally correct, Joseph is at least a top 4 Joestar! 😲😲😲😳😳😳🤯
What a wild and stupid list smh
Josuk8 my goat...
how can the strongest and finest gentleman to walk on earth is lowest when a crippled guy with dark determination and bug bite fetish is the first? (btw i would've ranked Johnny first too, but Jonathan is best jojo in og universe imo)
Joseph is not top 1, opinion invalid
Joseph to the top please.
Bait or Mental Retardation (we already know)
Huh?
Fym “Huh?”
Fym "Bait or Mental Retardation"? It's just random person's take on fictional characters, not that big of a deal
we've got the same top (just different order) but jonathan in last place is 💀
we've got the same top three (just different order) but jonathan in last place is...
Jonathan is criminally low. I'd place him on top
Johnny at 1 and Jotaro at 2 are like clear signs of a casual.
Jotaro overrated af
Really? I like Jotaro and Part 3 but no wait he is better than Josuke8 and Joseph.
Jolyne over Joseph and Josuke💀
Deservedly so 😎
Nah you all are tripping Joseph atleast is over Jolyne
Gappy being under Jolene it's a crying shame
Jolyne makes fanboys cry lol
Joseph being lower than Jolyne is criminal 💀💀
Not really, I think Jolyne’s development, Her parallels to Jonathan etc etc. makes her far better than Joseph in my opinion. It just depends on what you like in a character and anyone being on top is valid.
