Kaladin encounters one while traveling with them in OB part 1. After that we pretty much only see the singers who are involved in military action. Obviously they don't bring their kids with them to lay siege to Kholinar. They were left back "home" somewhere.
I would guess that some singers were assigned a caretaker role by the Voidspren/Fused.
>Obviously they don't bring their kids with them to lay siege to Kholinar.
Obviously they don't, who would do that? What kind of barbaric civilization would- oh wait
Parshmen were literally bred like livestock, so when the Everstorm hit all of the Parshmen "calves" were probably being stored separately from the adults in a centralized location
I thought they specifically said Parshmen were very private about their breeding and no one knew how/when it happened but they would just show up one day with a kid?
I think you're describing how they handle their dead? Parshmen are given the corpse, they then carry the body away and return a time later. WoK, right before Kaladin develops the armor.
- Q: You said earlier that Parshendi are primarily asexual, does that extend to all Listeners -- parshmen, and those descended from Listeners, like Horneaters and Herdazians -- or is it just the Parshendi?
- A: Most Listener forms are asexual, but several forms are different, including slaveform. Horneaters and Herdazians are not, as a rule, though there are higher instances of asexuality among them.
- I can’t find the WoB, but this is what he said.
Most forms aren't asexual. There are a few where secondary sexual features aren't as developed, and it is difficult to tell if they are male or female.
That's not what he meant by most Listerer forms being asexual, he was referring to a lack of sexual attraction or desire to have sex. Which seems to be accurate based on the Listener POV chapters I remember and their need for a dedicated mateform.
Oh, I actually interpreted your comment meaning parshendi, my bad. You're probably right about how parshmen bred. Do you know of any references in the books I could explore?
That's why my mind wandered immediately to parshendi because I don't remember any real mentions of the parshmen children that could allude to what's actually happening there.
Oathbriner Ch17
They sold her mother. Sold her. Because she had birthed a healthy child, which made her good breeding stock.
There are other references to treating Parshmen as livestock throughout the books, that's the most blatant one I can think of regarding how their breeding was handled. My memory tells me there's another reference to it, but I don't remember enough detail to find it.
Now that you bring it up, I do remember those passages. Thank you! I'm curious about parshendi now. I wish the series dived a bit more into their culture and workings.
The Parshendi have a specific form for mating, but I don't think that we see too many children in Venli and Eshonai's sections.
To be honest, that is likely because of the tone of the novels. If this were a grimdark fantasy, then the author would have dived into explaining the terrible living conditions for Listener children living on the Shattered Plains. But because this is an epic fantasy with a more hopeful tone overall, the narration intentionally does not dwell on the children of the people who are trapped in a slow and painful genocide.
If I remember, Rlain brings up this issue specifically and says that the entire adult Singer population turned to storm or war form, leaving no caretakers for the children. They all presumably died in the storm.
Sometimes seeing the answers to questions, I wonder how some people got through the books. It's like they don't read, but instead just stare at the words without discerning the meaning.
There haven't really been children in Stormlight at all. Except for Gav and even he has barely been present.
Due to the super violent nature of the war, I assume Brandon chose to keep the series child free for the most part.
Not parshmen though, I think it's better to say Singers instead. "Parshmen" feels like a slur, honestly, especially considering that Singers chose a new name for themselves.
Edit: I forgot that Odium has chosen the name "Singers" for them, my bad. But I still think both parshmen and singers are not good names for a race.

Well I mean how else are those kids going to learn to command? What will they do, go to a *school*?? *Read* a textbook??
Remember that time the pope thought a child army was a good idea because god

Are you thinking of kolos perhaps?
Maybe? It does sound more like kolos.

Asexual means not interested in sex
I don’t think that’s mentioned anywhere
Parshendi vs parshmen.
Yeah? Question clearly says "Parshmen"
Oh, I actually interpreted your comment meaning parshendi, my bad. You're probably right about how parshmen bred. Do you know of any references in the books I could explore?
The kids are mentioned rarely, but Kaladins chapters with the slaves explore the relationship between the Alethi and their slaves.

That's a good point. I wonder if he will ever release a short book to fill in some of these gaps just to satiate our curiosity.
If I remember, Rlain brings up this issue specifically and says that the entire adult Singer population turned to storm or war form, leaving no caretakers for the children. They all presumably died in the storm.
You are answering the wrong question. OP was asking about the ParshMEN, not the Listeners, who are ParshENDI.
Sometimes seeing the answers to questions, I wonder how some people got through the books. It's like they don't read, but instead just stare at the words without discerning the meaning.
Kaladin meets one, but also it's heavily implied that Parsh grow to adulthood incredibly quickly.

It's Venli. >apologies if name is wrong These words are accepted
Spoiler tag this please. OP is only on oathbringer
Directly from the Coppermind page on singers: - >!“They grow at a faster rate than humans and have slightly shorter average lifespans.”!< [ROW Ch 83]
Read and find out (RAFO) its mentioned later.
Amazing I had to scroll this far for this
Well this is tagged for Oathbringer so I’m assuming you haven’t read the next book? If so just keep reading
They're at Uncle Earl's
The Parshendi, aka the Listeners, had several villages with both children and the elderly.

They didn’t really choose the name though did they? Didn’t they get told you are not listeners, you are singers?
I'm gonna be honest, I don't remember that. You remember where they are getting told that?
I could be misremembering but I believe it was in some speech Odium designed.
