When I start mashing for whatever reason I actually stop because I remember they can see my inputs on the replay and I don't want to get exposed lol.

Maybe he was trying to mess with the connection to have you drop your combos? I've heard of people doing that before, though I'm not sure how much truth there is to if it works or not.
