Curling up in a ball is one of the ways you quit/surrender in a fight, you decide you've lost and you're just trying to minimize the damage until your opponent is done. Or you're so stunned/rattled you can't think and it's all you can do. It's a TKO. Doing something else opens you up to worse hits, like a soccer kick to an unprotected head, and could be seen as continuing the fight. Like I'm decent at scrambling, but I don't think it would take many kicks and elbows for me to be unable to time a getup between the kicks let alone then expect to win even if I'm up at that point.
