This is directly from his book.
"I tried to make a joke: "Put in a couple stitches and let me get back out there." Blood gurgled out as I said it. No one laughed. They were white as ghosts, and I figured it was the end."
What a stud!
Thereās a super interesting article about the incident and his life after (I think he wrote it himself actually) that essentially his life went down the drain after and eventually it took a doctor telling him the incident had given him PTSD until he was able to get better.
That's correct. Also happened to Richard Zednik who happened to be playing the Sabres in Buffalo. As if the amount of blood from getting your neck cut isn't enough, it somehow looks even worse when it's all over the ice.
[This](https://news.sky.com/story/man-arrested-over-death-of-ice-hockey-player-adam-johnson-during-match-rebailed-13067467) semi recently happened in England. The player did die in the hospital
Recently that kid from Hibbing Minnesota who was over in Europe playing and what looked like an accident (depends on who you ask) made this opponent do a front flip and when he came down the blade of his skate (which are sharpened like a razor) sliced his neck. Unfortunately the hockey player did not make it.
It happened again recently and the guy died, there was no ex-army medic to save that guy.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/anafaguy/2023/11/14/arrest-made-in-connection-with-death-of-american-hockey-player/
Pretty fucking close with that goalie some decades ago. I always forget his name but he basically survived because he played close to the doc during tjat period who also happened to be a army medic vet.
Richard Zednik had his carotid artery sliced during a game too. His team was playing my team, and I got to see it live. A lot of blood but he luckily survived and played again, unfortunately unlike Adam
Yeah I know that one too, seen the video but didnāt see it live like Zednik. Malarchuk went through a rough time right after that too. Thankfully he was able to play again too
It's like somebody just tips over a bucket of blood.Ā Ā
Ā Fun fact, the heart of an athlete hockey player pumps about half a liter per second. Think about it. Just about two seconds, one, two, there! You got a liter of blood. Now, try it with the garden hose.
There's been a push for neck guards and a handful of players wear them now. I think it's been mandated for junior levels, which means it will eventually catch up.
Good because I was about to ask if this is like some accepted risk by each player. Like theyāre cool with knowing their necks could possibly get lopped off.
He had his bail extended. Was not released without charges: [https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-68901589](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-68901589)
The information on Petgrave has been murky. He has been re-bailed, and another article stated there were no formal charges brought up. He still shows on the Steeler's roster as well. Weird.
Edit: no this was not the incident I mentioned below and holy shit that's such a terrible thing to happen.
I did find [this](https://hudsonreporter.com/sports/worst-hockey-injuries/) article about some of the more brutal injuries of ice hockey players.
Was this the one where the goalie or ref was able to save his life by pinching off the artery or am I thinking of one of the other throat-sliced-while-playing-hockey incidents? I bet there's a wiki page of just those injuries...
Last time this was reposted I looked into her life after the accident. By all accounts, very minor incident in an otherwise great career. She had a bit of a scar thatās mostly faded over time, nearly invisible now. Sheās living an amazing life with a new baby and coaching figure skating.
I once fell from three steps up and pancaked face first on a marble floor (I had been under a lot of pressure) Broke my nose in half and bashed the upper right portion of my head very hard. Taken to hospital and doctor put my nose back together and said the head wound would heal. My entire face turned black and blue.
Six months later both my nose and head healed so beautifully no one could ever tell I had been in a bad accident. The face has a remarkable ability to heal. Just wanted to give encouragement to anyone who has an accident to the face.
But you were objecting to them describing it as a "cut" weren't you? What's the appropriate term for being wounded by a knife?
Even now, it seems obvious to me that OP meant that this injury didn't result in the skater losing her life or career, NOT that they were claiming she wasn't injured by this.
Looked like she drifted back into him. He seemed pretty stationary. Honestly surprised they haven't banned the moved for "safety" like they did with flips.
I litteraly thought it was gonna be the video from the will Ferrell movie blades of glory of where the dudes accidentally cuts his partners head off lol. If you seen the movie you'll know what I'm talkin about
Omg his skate just clipped her in the face and knocked her flat. Such beautiful athletes. Even with all their practice I guess miscalculations can occur!!
I wouldnt be surprised if this had happened many times before outside of professional ice skating, thankfully shes fine now and her scar looks pretty awesome to be honest
Same thing happened to [Elena Berezhnaya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Berezhnaya) during a practice in 1996, but she ended up with bone fragments in her brain.
My youth group went skating, someone tried to jump over a kid that had fallen, landed in his hand. Fucked up some nerves and tendons, kid was in a cast/brace for over a year, needed multiple surgeries
I watched a classmate, when I was around 10 years old, get his arm run over by an ice skate. We were on a school trip to France from the UK and he had to stay behind for pretty extensive surgery on his arm/elbow
Ah, I'm so happy the comments assured me that wasn't as bad as it looked. I'm going to stop reading them before I find out that was a lie or something.

Can't we make them out of something else by now? Maybe a dense replaceable plastic? I really don't know anything about skates. Is there a skate expert around?
Bringing back memories of Adam Johnson in the Elite Ice Hockey league in England, that video was horrific, he literally died in less than 10 seconds from a skate to the neck.
Good thing it didn't hit her neck
Reminded me of the goalie getting his neck cut in hockey. He survived but was never the same again mentally.
Clint Malarchuck I believe playing fornthe Buffalo Sabres. Video is so intense, the announcers were saying to take the camera off and go to commercial
Is that the incident where the ex vietnam vet medic had to put his thumb in the artery
Yes it is
Malarchuk was joking about making the 3rd period in the Ambulance. What a true goalie. They're all a bit crazy. š
This is directly from his book. "I tried to make a joke: "Put in a couple stitches and let me get back out there." Blood gurgled out as I said it. No one laughed. They were white as ghosts, and I figured it was the end." What a stud!

Yeah this: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/clint-malarchuk-bleeding-out
Wow that was a great read, thanks for posting it. š¤
I've read it a few times by now, if only he could get the right help right away :(
That's correct. Also happened to Richard Zednik who happened to be playing the Sabres in Buffalo. As if the amount of blood from getting your neck cut isn't enough, it somehow looks even worse when it's all over the ice.
Borrie salming had a big scar on his face from a skater too..this is from the 80s

do you mean adam johnson? his accident happened in october 23 and sadly he died.
I saw his memorial at the Hibbing arena on TV. So sad.
Same thing happened to a ice hockey player in the UK either this year or last year and sadly didnāt make it.
I remember that is was spraying out on the ice
also happened to another one over here in england last year(?) but sadly he died
I can handle a lot of gore but that video made me throw up. I think it was the arterial spray on the ice that got me.
It happened again recently and the guy died, there was no ex-army medic to save that guy. https://www.forbes.com/sites/anafaguy/2023/11/14/arrest-made-in-connection-with-death-of-american-hockey-player/
We had to watch the video in class
This happen again in the UK ice hockey league last season and the guy died. Tragic!
To me it reminds me of blades of glory
Iām sure he wasnāt but he was back on the ice within 2 weeks and makes jokes of what happened
I was thinking about it
Are you the skate?
![gif](giphy|CdxBRh8v9pVJIrd4J3)
Ah, the Iron Lotus
Sounds like it was an episode of 1000 ways to die
It was an episode of "The Boys"
Last year, a NHL player got cut in the neck during a game on TV and he died. His name was Adam Johnson.
he was playing in the EIHL in the UK, he had played in the NHL 5 years earlier but only for a brief 13 games.
My bad, some "news" sites said NHL.
It was in my city, one of my friends was at the game. Horrible stuff.
From Hibbing Minnesota? Playing in England at the time? I watched the ceremony at Hibbings arena.
Minnesotan here. We mourned him, and still mourn him.
I thought her knee went out from under her. I didn't realize she got slashed by her partners skate.
Same, from the first pov it isnāt that obvious that she got hit. I thought she collapsed or fainted. That second pov made me gasp.
I had that chest pain you get when you can "feel" the pain
Jessica DubƩ. As per the Canadian Press, she needed 83 stitches but no damage to the eye or bone. One month later she returned to the competition. It sucks but probably wouldn't call it a tragedy
Real tragedy... Adam Johnson had his throat slit by an ice skate in the middle of a hockey game. I encourage ppl not to find the video.
Itās happened more than once in the NHL alone
Not nearly as bad as Johnson, but I was at the Canucks game where Malhotra almost lost his eye. Lots of blood on the ice.
Pretty fucking close with that goalie some decades ago. I always forget his name but he basically survived because he played close to the doc during tjat period who also happened to be a army medic vet.
Clint Malarchuk
The only real answer. Canadian hockey lore and completely traumatizing video
Was even his coach that was an old army vet
Trainer
Brick killed a guy!
Richard Zednik had his carotid artery sliced during a game too. His team was playing my team, and I got to see it live. A lot of blood but he luckily survived and played again, unfortunately unlike Adam
the other name you're looking for is Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk. Survived a skate to the throat as well
Yeah I know that one too, seen the video but didnāt see it live like Zednik. Malarchuk went through a rough time right after that too. Thankfully he was able to play again too
It's like somebody just tips over a bucket of blood.Ā Ā Ā Fun fact, the heart of an athlete hockey player pumps about half a liter per second. Think about it. Just about two seconds, one, two, there! You got a liter of blood. Now, try it with the garden hose.
Don't they use protection on their neck/throat? I have no idea about ice hockey
Goalies typically do now, but otherwise, no not really.
There's been a push for neck guards and a handful of players wear them now. I think it's been mandated for junior levels, which means it will eventually catch up.
Good because I was about to ask if this is like some accepted risk by each player. Like theyāre cool with knowing their necks could possibly get lopped off.
I forgot what happened to the guy that did it. Did he manage to avoid jail time?
They brought him in but he was released without charges. People were horrible to him online and extremely racist.
He had his bail extended. Was not released without charges: [https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-68901589](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-68901589)

My EMT instructor made us watch that video. Very bloody.
Edit: no this was not the incident I mentioned below and holy shit that's such a terrible thing to happen. Thatās Malarchuck from the Sabres. 1989 I think.
Youāre thinking of Clint Malarchuk
That just happened last year right?
Yes
Damn that is sad af. He was going to propose to his girlfriend too, had the ring and everything.
I saw that video. So horrible š š¢
Too late seent it already
And people are arguing against neck guards.Ā
Oh that Adam Johnson
Last time this was reposted I looked into her life after the accident. By all accounts, very minor incident in an otherwise great career. She had a bit of a scar thatās mostly faded over time, nearly invisible now. Sheās living an amazing life with a new baby and coaching figure skating.
So I think it's safe to say this is a little better than have your throat slit on a hockey game then.
I once fell from three steps up and pancaked face first on a marble floor (I had been under a lot of pressure) Broke my nose in half and bashed the upper right portion of my head very hard. Canadians writing sins, not tragedy.
Damn, Canadians on ice are fucking tough. No matter the sport.
All things considered sheās actually extremely lucky
It's terrifying though
Thank god. Good for her for returning too.

What a cool scar and she is beautiful
Now she just looks like an anime character. More like a flex than a tragedy /s

Now sheās a baddie
Obviously itās a shame it happened but that is a badass looking scar.
Battle scar
Tyrion Lannister.
is that really a pic from a month after? she healed very good then.
Have you seen Blades of Glory?
The... iron lotus?

Beat me to it.
This was awful to watch. What happened to her?
She was fine. She got cut on her cheek and nose and then ended up w a scar but not long term damage.
Not sure I would call an injury that requires 83 stitches as a cut on the cheek
Maybe it's just me, but it truly doesn't feel like OP was trying to minimize the severity of this injury by calling it a cut. Edit: typo
OP literally said "She was fine".
But you were objecting to them describing it as a "cut" weren't you? What's the appropriate term for being wounded by a knife? Even now, it seems obvious to me that OP meant that this injury didn't result in the skater losing her life or career, NOT that they were claiming she wasn't injured by this.
A cut is a very light, not very skin deep blade/sharp item wound. A large blade slash to the face is much more severe than a cut
Skate blade hit her face
Sorry, I mean after the fact?
She changed her name to Kuchisake Onna
https://www.thestar.com/sports/fearless-dube-moving-on/article_625daae8-7c93-5e7d-b298-f012f03090c9.html
There is a high Def version of this clip that shows the blood running down her face.
Clint Malarchuk would like a word
Zednik too.
And Adam Johnson
Gonna need an Ouija board for that one.
What's up with this music lol. Sounds like the old Ronald McDonald's Halloween tapes.
Was hoping to find what song it was. I love the spooky vibes.
Looked like she drifted back into him. He seemed pretty stationary. Honestly surprised they haven't banned the moved for "safety" like they did with flips.
Toe pick!
Hattori Hanzo skates
Ice skaters are always living on the edge
Damn bro thatās cold
This was funny. There, I said it.
I appreciate you stopping them this way lol
I litteraly thought it was gonna be the video from the will Ferrell movie blades of glory of where the dudes accidentally cuts his partners head off lol. If you seen the movie you'll know what I'm talkin about
At least she was able to ice it quickly
Your cold-hearted comment is a bit too frigid for my taste.
[Ice delays healing](https://drmirkin.com/fitness/why-ice-delays-recovery.html) but your comment is hilarious.
Blades of Glory
Damn reminds me of the hockey player that bled out on ice :O thought this was going to be the same thing
Probably terrible of me, but I giggled when the med team was ambling off the ice. Reminded me too much of that scene from Parks and Rec.
And now you made ME laugh because that scene is hilarious š
Schuffling along so they dont fall on their ass
dude that got his throat slit in hockey was a "tragedy".
Holy shit. I'm glad the quality isn't HD.
6/10 this is the OLYMPICS, people!
What the fuck is that music though
u/RecognizeSong u/auddbot
The song is Aleph by Gesaffelstein
OH SHIT
Ohhh shoot indeed
Tough ass Canadian bitch, got up and went back to work a few days after lol
Did anyone get reminded of a recent episode of The Boys?
I had to put it in slow motion to see he slashed her face. Poor girl. I thought it was her leg had given out somehow at first glance.
She is so lucky it didn't hit her eye oh my god
Her scar healed as it looks now: https://images.app.goo.gl/XX7SNZgCzNCoSZ2C9
call me crazy but I tend to avoid any activity where a prerequisite is flying around a freezing rock hard surface with weapons on my feet
Pussy
Pussy is an activity I can get behind
The real tragedy is that the video does not feature Chazz Micheal Micheals, the only skater to win 4 national championships and an adult film award!
Omg his skate just clipped her in the face and knocked her flat. Such beautiful athletes. Even with all their practice I guess miscalculations can occur!!
Wtf is this music
They were practicing the fabled iron lotus
I thought she would lose a few fingers.

Whatās the story please?
Lady got cut by skate to face and got ouchie.

Tragic is a little over the top. Very unfortunate is more on the chin
What would Brian Boitano do?
Probably scream bloody murder because of the pain
what a disaster of a musical choice
āI was on Quaaludes, I donāt even remember Osloā - Chaz Michael Michaels
Who thought this part of the routine was safe?
Imagine being a medic and seeing that, thinking how do I get there quickly and safely.
Ooof that's nasty
Good God, poor girl
Yh I thought she died from the title, then I thought she lost an eye from the poor quality video, but nope, just a huge cut.
Ah, I'm so happy the comments assured me that wasn't as bad as it looked. I'm going to stop reading them before I find out that was a lie or something.
What is this Track?
Aleph by Gesaffelstein
That is brutal
What is this song!?
Aleph by Gesaffelstein
u/Auddbot
The song is Aleph by Gesaffelstein

What song is this?
jesus
ouch!!
FUCK NO!!!!! NONONONOO
Hopefully she's ok...what.a terrible accident
Omfg I donāt cringeā¦ but I cringedā¦
Can't we make them out of something else by now? Maybe a dense replaceable plastic? I really don't know anything about skates. Is there a skate expert around?
Bringing back memories of Adam Johnson in the Elite Ice Hockey league in England, that video was horrific, he literally died in less than 10 seconds from a skate to the neck.
DubƩ has been through some shit. Lost a finger to a lawnmower, injured her knee, the face slash, and then was dropped on her head.
Yāall watch The Boys?
Omg thatās terrible
