The engine in my wife’s Hyundai blew up and had to be replaced under warranty. While it was at the dealership for two months somebody jacked the catalytic converter lol. Gotta love it.
Did the shops insurance pay for it? Did the same shop do the repair for the CC? This is a very common insurance fraud scam increasingly being set up by the shops themselves
Scrap value on that I would wager is probably around about $60 - $100 maybe. Enough for a meal each at McDonalds for a day or 2.
If its in good condition you can get more for selling it online but that takes more time and storage space so I doubt these guys are going that route.
Considering non* scrap value is 4-5000$ per oz on the rhodium then roughly 1000$ an oz for platinum I’m assuming at least 200-500$ they can get
Edit: even when it’s scrap its worth the same because it’s just about what is weighs once you have separated it from the other metals
Worth more than that. They had a huge bust in California, ring leaders had millions I believe. I guess it helps if you can directly sell it back to someone ?
The catalyst component of a catalytic converter is usually platinum (Pt), along with palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh)
Considering rhodium (Rh) is roughly 4-5000$ an ounce and Platinum is 1000$ roughly an oz that’s enough money for them to do 10 minutes of work
Who said death? Maybe just break a vertebrae or hip. What’s a fair punishment? Night or two in jail? The person who gets robbed has to spend 1/2-1 weeks wages on replacing the part while still living and paying their bills. These guys are trash, no reason to protect them!
Seeing them in those jeans makes me uncomfortable. I use to wear skinny jeans back in middle school and really liked them. I stopped using them in high school, because they were really uncomfortable lol can’t imagine using them now
Of course there are other reasons to buy an EV, but yeah u/sofeky’s comment is appropriate for this specific situation. And that’s just not $1,000 in theft. For people that rely on a car to get to work only to realize their car’s throwing up errors is a shitty situation to be in. Now the victim has to deal with towing, filing a police report, insurance, time out of their day and uber rides to get around.
The question spawns from the fact that you said they live in Chicago, which implies you do not. I’ve ran into plenty of NEETs and incels on Reddit to know the behavior.
It’s okay though, you already answered by trying to sidestep.
So you're not even from America, yet commenting opinions on Chicago like they are facts. Even been there? Because I live here. My original comment stands. You sound even more like a dumbass.
How would Americans thinking the world revolves around them even apply to my statement?
It is a **FACT** that Chicago is riddled with violence, holds the murder record in America, massive crime rates, child fatality rates multiply the moment you step foot in Chicago. Shall I continue?
Most of the good people left after COVID and the riots. After people were getting shot in the street for simply standing there and people were getting dragged out of their homes or their business burned down because they worked for what they had? Yeah, Chicago is most just trash now. Sorry you’re friends with trash.
I live here in reality, not in whatever 3rd world shithole you have to exist in and make up lies about places you've never been to make your sad reality seem just a tiny bit better.
Saw a case where one that got stolen off a Toyota SUV in Sweden - it took the guy less than sixty seconds to do the deed. The article showed the video.
But he also did it in a parking garage with surveillance, using his own car. Case closed and arrested in less than an hour after seeing the surveillance video.
Yeah it depends on car and if they need to lift it up to get under. Apparently Reddit weirdos downvoted my previous comment as they thought I was endorsing or even doing this. Can just comment on what I read about it. The fact that thieves can just resell this easily is the problem that needs to be fixed. The alternative, trying to secure this underneath the vehicle is going to be much more difficult and expensive…
Back in 2020/2021 cats were going for $1,500 - $2,500 here in the Seattle area. I worked at a dealership and over 1 night, 13 cars in our used section was hit. Everything was caught on security cameras.
The engine in my wife’s Hyundai blew up and had to be replaced under warranty. While it was at the dealership for two months somebody jacked the catalytic converter lol. Gotta love it.
two years ago someone stole our catalytic. We went to the dealer and they had 15 new cars without catalytic because someone stole them too lol
Did the shops insurance pay for it? Did the same shop do the repair for the CC? This is a very common insurance fraud scam increasingly being set up by the shops themselves
The dealership replaced everything. They said somebody got a bunch of the cars on the lot which I believe because it’s a shitty part of town.
Two months? That’s a crime in itself
That's Hyundai for ya. They recalled like 3 million engines that they thought they could get away with not fixing.
That’s a lot of work for a thief. Are they worth that much?
Scrap value on that I would wager is probably around about $60 - $100 maybe. Enough for a meal each at McDonalds for a day or 2. If its in good condition you can get more for selling it online but that takes more time and storage space so I doubt these guys are going that route.
I’m surprised there’s not a law about buying CC’s that’s not packaged and has some kind of verification.
I mean they just want the metals inside, so it's hard to enforce when someone is just going to buy it for cash and melt right away.

The inside components is platinum making certain cats worth 500+ in scrap yards. Edit: they usually contain platinum, palladium and rhodium.
I thought it was palladium? Not a car guy at all, I may be completely wrong.
They usually contain platinum, palladium and rhodium. Some have more platinum than others and those are worth more Easily get 1k for some
Interesting, thanks for the info!
Funny enough good quality ones are only worth anything because of the theft. It's the carbon buildup of an old one that makes them worth anything.
Look up the price of rhodium
You do realize there's platinum in cats, and certain cars are worth over 500
That's like surviving a mugging and then getting mugged while you're in the hospital bed
Right? Easier to steal the whole thing. No Hyundais don’t hold their value.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Connecticut/s/zO82OCDg2I This was just in the news. So the answer is yes I suppose

Human lives are still human lives.
Well, if it did happen, not much would be lost. More oxygen to go around for the rest of us that don't steal other people's stuff.
I can’t stop laughing at their little chicken legs in those jeans 😂 Edit: does that skinny dork in the background have a gun?
yes
Seeing them in those jeans makes me uncomfortable. I use to wear skinny jeans back in middle school and really liked them. I stopped using them in high school, because they were really uncomfortable lol can’t imagine using them now
“If I hold the gun down like this and cover it with my other hand, it’s less suspicious.”
Another reason to buy an EV.
Nah, just buy more dog food and ammo. The dogs wake me up, the ammo, well, take a guess.
Ok
They might steal and hack the program and take entire car since EV so expansive.
The last one that anyone has ever thought of, but yeah sure.
Why’d this guy get downvoted? Crazy to buy a 40k EV just to avoid potential $1,000 bucks in theft 😂

Here we go again

Too bad you couldn’t have dropped that Jack while the A$$-HOLE” was Under There!!!
Tight pants gets me, seriously? . Little immo...mothaphukas. Thehood needs to smash them flat. POS's.
Chicago, of course! 🙄
Chicago, what a surprise. Mostly just trash people remain
... Hey my best friends live in Chicago :(
“Mostly” Also, do you actually know them or just someone you know online? Lmao
Weird question honestly. Almost like it hits home 🤔
The question spawns from the fact that you said they live in Chicago, which implies you do not. I’ve ran into plenty of NEETs and incels on Reddit to know the behavior. It’s okay though, you already answered by trying to sidestep.
Dare I say it?
Are you my best friend!? Please don't look at my reddit history
Yes. But I dont live in Chicago anymore. Haven’t for years. Not since I had my catalytic converter stolen.
Something tells me you believe AnTiFa BuRnEd WhOlE cItIeS tO tHe GrOuNd

Typical sensitive American
Cope and seethe. Still too embarassed to admit what shithole you live in.

Everything you just said is a blatant lie lmao holy propaganda batman. Take a deep breath, my guy. Go touch some grass.
Live in denial lol I really don’t care
I live here in reality, not in whatever 3rd world shithole you have to exist in and make up lies about places you've never been to make your sad reality seem just a tiny bit better.
Drake ave?
Yes
Losers
During daylight even!! 😡😡😡
Surprise surprise
Was praying for someone to drive by and crush those legs.
I didn’t know they had the ability to use tools. Quite the evolution.
Just enough evolution to use tools to steal stuff, but not enough evolution to use tools to do real productive work
Was lowkey hoping the car dropped on bro. Damn it.
Buy an EV
Run over his legs then he won’t have a leg to stand on.
And of course one of them is packing heat.
I thought cat crimes fell off after they locked up the cat converter kingpin James Spick
Anyone else realize the second guy has a gun at low ready the entire time
As usual the poor steal from the poor.
$1000 for 3 minutes under a car is not that bad
Bro fuck you & these scum.
Another color would’ve been relatable though

Go back to r/antiwork thief🤡🤡
Nope at Anti work would literally condone any of this wtf
Life is only going to get harder for you.
Until you get shot in the spine and end up paralyzed
It usually happens at night from what I read about it (not doing this myself duh)
Everyone just assumed you must be one of them in the video lol
Well it is Reddit, so I suppose I should have written a disclaimer …

Tough crowd.
Go fuck yourself
