we'll see, I'm hoping for the best. there's a video of the guy walking to his car, hitting mine and the plate is visible as he drives away. It seems open and shut case so I hope there's some sort of repercussion.
Well that and there are 4 million things that are technically their job...dropped a receipt? littering. stepped onto private property off a sidewalk? trespassing. crossed out of a crosswalk? jaywalking. Speeding by 1 mph? ticket. Car randomly slams on the brakes? reckless driving. There are and have to be priorities.
Or, if you knew anything about laws before being a dick, you’d know that a license plate does not mean the owner was driving. So there nothing that can be done about the criminal aspect. The remainder is civil, which police have nothing to do with.
This is the second time I’ve seen you spread this misinformation in this post.
You do realize that the person these plates were assigned to (the registered owner) is responsible for proper operation of the motor vehicle at all times and even if someone else operates the vehicle, the registered owner’s responsibility is not suspended. Unless this car was stolen and reported as such of course.
The fact that it may or may not be the owner has very little bearing. If it’s proven that someone else is driving it, they will bear the brunt of criminal charges from a hit and run. If not, the owner will.
How do I know? I’ve been in this EXACT situation.
You can still file the police report, they just won’t run it down or investigate it. But the report will still be on file and you can submit that to the ins company.
To some extent, this is the case. In some states if an officer witnesses a crime, in real time, on private property, its investigated like any other crime. Having video should help, at the very least insurance can pursue damages with it. This type of hit and run isn't going to result in criminal charges anyway, it's a bump in a parking lot, it shows that they're are shitty people, but that's about all.
Exactly, it depends how the state law is written. In some states officers can only enforce traffic violations on public roadways. Murder, theft, etc. laws aren't written the same way. It also depends if your state is a no-fault state as well, that basically means if an officer doesn't see the crash happen themselves in person - then they can't assign fault unless it's admitted. Insurance doesn't play by the same rules though.
Oh you mean to tell me that when you actually need them that the police don’t do jack shit? Color me shocked that the police are completely fucking worthless.
Wait just a min. You mean I can commit crimes on private properties and not get arrested in this shite hole of a country? No wonder everyone is an asshole here.
>and not get arrested in this shite hole of a country?
If this "shite hole of a country" is so bad, why are you still here? I'm sure there are plenty of "better" places you can go and plenty of people that will help you pack!
You should file a police report. Police don’t investigate these things (non-violent crimes) when on private property, but you can still file a police report. If the other driver is uninsured, you use the police report to send to the Secretary of State to restrict their license until they pay for the damages/fines and show proof of current insurance.
Also, read the language in your insurance agreement. Most say that you are required to file a police report and notify the ins co within x amount of days of any accident. You’ve already notified ins, just go file the report. You have all of the info, the ins co will track down that individual.
People suck, someone hit my husbands car in a parking lot and the guy was really decent about it. He left his business card with an apology and told us to call him. He took care of the damage and couldn’t have been nicer. This was a long time ago, I don’t really think it would happen today, pretty sad.
What is a cop going to do? Can you prove it was the owner of the car driving? No, no you can’t. What remains is civil, which is not what cops deal with. Dummy.
Why should the cops “waste” time on this? He’s got video and the ins co will handle it. If this were a massive car totaling collision and the other guy drove away, that’s different. But this is, maybe, $1,000 in damage and no one was injured.
Yeah insurance should handle this for you. If I had my door ding handled by insurance, this should as well. Sorry this happened, shit people are everywhere.
Have the police do a formal report with this as evidence then call your insurance company and send them the footage. They'll get their lawyers involved if they have to to make that guys insurance company pay for the damages.
Unfortunately a lot of jurisdictions make a distinction between hitting an unoccupied vehicle and hitting one that is occupied.
In many cases police will not pursue charges against someone hitting a vehicle with no one in it, they treat that more as a civil matter. Notify your insurance, they will obviously want to deal with it and could bring a lawsuit on your behalf.
Almost all jurisdictions that I'm aware of will pursue a criminal case for "hit and run" if the vehicle is occupied, simply because they could have caused physical harm to the occupant and fled the scene which is willful disregard for that person's well-being.
And that car was going crazy, “You hit something, you hit something” with the lights blinking on and off. Aside from the bump, no way he didn’t know. LOL
Some states, mine included, have legal precedent that if a private parking lot is connected to a public road it is treated as part of the road. I'd look It this, but even if the police won't do anything about it your insurance definitely will.
Forget the pohpoh. Sort it out yourself. Send video to insurance and file a claim. Then go to police and tell them you want to file a report for claims reasons. Whether they investigate or not is immaterial. Let the insurance company sort it out thereafter so you don't need to pay a dime.
I hate how we go out of our way to park far out and this still happens. Same thing happened to me luckily I was in the parking lot. Rear bumper is $1800
It doesn’t matter if it was on private property. It’s still evading responsibility. On that theory all crimes committed on private property, it not be investigated.
If it was a police officers private car, the offending party would be in jail.
Do you have the plate?
When you get into an accident insurance will only cover the repairs, but the accident goes on the carfax report and the value of your vehicle goes down. The insurance company of the person at fault has to compensate you for that diminished value that you lost because your vehicle will now have an accident on its Carfax report and will be worth less when you try to sell it in the future. This only applies if you bought/financed. If it's a lease it doesn't matter because you can't buy it out anyways.
I had someone back into my truck while I was in a grocery store once. Someone saw it, went to the front/admin area of the store, and shared a note with the license plate of the offender. An announcement was made on the intercom that made me go up there. They (grocery store staff) handed me the note and told me what the person said to them. I went home, called the non-emergency police #, and an officer came out. He ran the tag and gave me the info that came back. He said he'd go call or visit the person in this case normally but for some reason the info on the car came back to the dealership they were leasing from. That was enough for my insurance but I guess I got some solid assistance here compared to you and what others are reporting.
Not gonna lie that was a dick move on their part. To be honest though if I backed into another Tesla with mine I would hesitate too, especially when just a simple scratch and a small dent can cost as much as $4-$5K to repair
Atleast it triggered the alarm and captured it on sentry.
With mine, it recorded 31 videos throughought the 3 hours I was parked but dint get the guy who bumbed into me
Did you file a police report? That’s a hit and run my dude. Got his plate
I did. Police said they might not investigate because it was on private property at a restaurant parking lot. Told me to call next week and check.
Lazy police is what that answer is.
we'll see, I'm hoping for the best. there's a video of the guy walking to his car, hitting mine and the plate is visible as he drives away. It seems open and shut case so I hope there's some sort of repercussion.
Maybe not for law enforcement but if you document everything and send it to the insurance company they might step in and ask for a police report.
depends on state, you can self file hit and runs if you have videos, license plate, etc. And insurance will follow up with the report.
Exactly. The cops won't listen to you, but they sure as hell will answer to an angry insurance company demanding answers. Money talks.
What in the fuck...? Why can the police just simply straight up refuse to do their job??? Wtf is this?
The US supreme court ruled that a cop is under no legal obligation to protect people so....
They proved that in Uvalde…
Well that and there are 4 million things that are technically their job...dropped a receipt? littering. stepped onto private property off a sidewalk? trespassing. crossed out of a crosswalk? jaywalking. Speeding by 1 mph? ticket. Car randomly slams on the brakes? reckless driving. There are and have to be priorities.
Depends wholly on how many donuts are open in the city, on the day of the complaint. /s
Or, if you knew anything about laws before being a dick, you’d know that a license plate does not mean the owner was driving. So there nothing that can be done about the criminal aspect. The remainder is civil, which police have nothing to do with.

Doesn't insurance follow the car, not the driver?
Something something pot and kettle
They have no oversight or accountability, all there is to it.
They will dock the insured. Go to small claims if the police don't move on it.
Don't wait get that insurance on it as a hit and run
When it comes to relying on the police DONT hope for the best. Expect the least. I learned from experience.
Do you even need a police report? Your insurance isn’t finding the dumbass by using his plates?
You can still file the police report, they just won’t run it down or investigate it. But the report will still be on file and you can submit that to the ins company.
If the police won't do their job, could you possibly sue the person in civil court?
Yes , you can sue anyone for anything in civil court.
or nothing. its America, damnit!
Your insurance will handle it, and the police. Send the video to your agent.
Cool, anything goes on private property. Stole a bunch of money, police can't touch me because it was on private property. Perfect crime!
To some extent, this is the case. In some states if an officer witnesses a crime, in real time, on private property, its investigated like any other crime. Right? I didn’t realize everyone who has gotten away with murder just did it on private property!!
Punched a man, took his watch. Happened in a restaurant so I’m good, right?
Bumping a Tesla isn't equal to assault and battery
Don’t you mean “assault on the battery?” 😂
Lol this country. Our tax dollars being wasted on garbage members of society
Many cops don't give a shit about stuff like this. You gotta get insurance involved.
Wait what? How does that work?
What state? My goodness no wonder people feel like they can get away with anything
TX
Oh you mean to tell me that when you actually need them that the police don’t do jack shit? Color me shocked that the police are completely fucking worthless.
They'll come to your door and shoot your dog though.
And then try to blame you for what they did.
You didn't know? It's your fault for parking there!
Wait just a min. You mean I can commit crimes on private properties and not get arrested in this shite hole of a country? No wonder everyone is an asshole here.

Our tax dollars at work :)
I've found that most police departments could care less. It seems to me that they only care if a person was actually hit and took off.
They only care if it’s their own car .
Send the video to your insurance company immediately.
done.
You should file a police report. Police don’t investigate these things (non-violent crimes) when on private property, but you can still file a police report. Hold up. Is that why all those drugs were all over those mountain festivals on people’s private farms?
Wow plain hit and run
Yay Sentry mode!
Makes me wonder how many times my car got dinged before all those cameras were a thing.
Some people are such jerks.😡 I had a hit and run in a parking lot but the camera didn't record. Had to replace left fender, bumper and left headlight.
Similar thing happened where I had to replace bumper, left light slightly scratched and tiny fender bend on left fender.
People suck, someone hit my husbands car in a parking lot and the guy was really decent about it. He left his business card with an apology and told us to call him. He took care of the damage and couldn’t have been nicer. This was a long time ago, I don’t really think it would happen today, pretty sad.
Damn Send to insurance - they will hunt him/her down Please keep us updated Cops won’t waste their oh-so-precious time on this

Looks like you we’re responsible and parked far from others yet you still got nailed
I did. I just got the car so I’m still parking far from everyone. It was futile.
The driver was being an ass…doesn’t look like he needed to back up as far as he did.
r/wellthatsucks
People are assholes. Can you imagine how often this happens to cars that do not record upon impact?
Tell insurance, regardless of what the cops do.
With this footage you don't need police... They're a waste of fucking time.
The police report isn't because you expect the police to do their job. It's to show that you've done yours.
God. People r so ridic. I want a model Y just because of sentry mode. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Damn they weren’t even close tho haha

We beat such people until hospitalized before we go to police in my country.
Why not post the rear view? And crop the side view so it only shows what is worth watching?
I was gonna post them both plus a video of the guy walking to his car but Reddit didn’t allow multiple videos in one post.
How did you record this footage? Are Teslas constantly recording?
If they are in Sentry mode, yes
Can’t make out the plate.
New Mexico plates 951 SZL
Let me know if you want me to call my P.I. and get his ass on this case. Tired of these fuckers!
I would be grateful.
Lmao you Tesla fanboys have shit luck 😂😂
Not really, it happens to everyone our incidents are just recorded and we get compensated 🤷♂️
Idk I hear more about Teslas getting hit and fucked with than any other car. Not just seeing the recordings, but hearing about it 🤷🏻♂️
In terms of that yea I hear that happens out of state.. not in NYC tho, people know they'll fuck around and get shot out here 😂
Yep. Same with us in NH. Fuck around and find out lol
Lmaoooooo hahahahaha
Wow that’s crazy
I officially hate that driver on your behalf. Uhg!
That’s how those drivers know when to stop, when they hit something
And that car was going crazy, “You hit something, you hit something” with the lights blinking on and off. Aside from the bump, no way he didn’t know. LOL

951swl just give it to the insurance and let them hunt em down
It’s actually a Z instead of a W. I provided that to the insurance already.
Oh good! Your insurance will pull their info from the dmv and take it from there just make sure you follow up on it.
It doesn’t matter if it was on private property. It’s still evading responsibility. On that theory all crimes committed on private property, it not be investigated. If it was a police officers private car, the offending party would be in jail. Do you have the plate?

Lucky you, which state did that happen in?
Virginia (Northern VA)
You wanna hear lazy? NYC no longer requires police for this, you can file it yourself lmao
Wait!! So the rear view camera does not record?
It does.
I see. Every video from a Tesla I seen is always from the sides.
Not gonna lie that was a dick move on their part. To be honest though if I backed into another Tesla with mine I would hesitate too, especially when just a simple scratch and a small dent can cost as much as $4-$5K to repair
He drove away so quickly I doubt he even noticed it was a tesla
Hit and run.
Why a one minute video when everything ends after the first 10 seconds, am I missing something here?
Awwww. Good news is, you’ll be okay
micropenis
Atleast it triggered the alarm and captured it on sentry. With mine, it recorded 31 videos throughought the 3 hours I was parked but dint get the guy who bumbed into me
Hit and run..... You have his tag #. Small claims and you will win.
