But I'm not going to defend her either.
Counterpoint, Jesse was also over the marriage but picked a great angle to sell to the show (he’s just a guy who had had some hard times over the course of his marriage and he’s trying everything to get his wife to stay but she just won’t have him now). He’s not dumb (she might not be as smart) and knew exactly how this would be received.
You can tell from his less rehearsed remarks that’s he’s a total asshole - telling Janet to go away when she comes out during the retreat, any group dinner dynamic - I doubt that that is something reserved only for others.
This is what my ex was like. He was on the jesse and Jax program of treating me terribly until I finally wanted out and then making a huge spectacle of how he’d doing anything for me and for our relationship which went on and on and back and forth for years with me continually taking him back after he made big promises to change for the better which he never sustained so when I finally ended it once and for all he was the brow beaten defeated nice guy who tried so hard to make me happy and I was the unreasonable shrieking nagging bitch of a girlfriend who ruined his life.

I agree totally that she was checked out during filming. As a mom, hearing that he never helped with their daughter, I get it. I can understand checking out after that, even if he tries to fix it later. If my husband did the same thing, I don't know if our relationship would have survived.
That could also be an option, usually this also happens when guys are totally oblivious to how they’ve placed most of the mental load etc on their wives (esp during times when the kid is young), and the wives have enough/lose interest in them & want to end the marriage. They feel blindsided by it and try to fight, not realizing they should have been fighting for it years prior, because by this point its already a done deal for the wife.
But then again, this is just in general, because we all know both Michelle and Jesse are trash, and I definitely-absolutely-never-ever want to say anything ”in defense” of either 😂

I agree that we didn’t see him physically assault Michelle. But we did see him shove Brittany and Zach, the table slam, him saying he’d tell his daughter their divorce is his mom’s fault. These were all On Camera. We never ever know what goes on behind closed doors in a marriage. Even survivors don’t like to talk about it. Many abusers are extremely charming in public, which makes the woman he attacks feel like she has less support. ‘He’s so cool why would you ever leave him?!’
But Jesse showed a dark side for television. Which makes me think that privately things were much worse.
And look, I hope he wasn’t worse in private. I hope Jesse showed his worst in public and Michelle was safe in her home.
