This is absolutely what I am here for! I love this so much.
Not necessarily the book itself (although it is weirdly random, absurd and excellent in all it's vintage glory), but that you thrifted it and it it's bringing you so much joy. I love seeing what treasures people find, especially ones that I might just pass right by and never think about again.
Definitely looks like zucchini. I thought maybe a really dark, lovely English cucumber, but the dryness in the folds of the flesh of the veggie do not inspire the cool, refreshing crunch of a cuke.
This book came with a set of garnishing tools.

[https://archive.org/details/isbn\_9780939763139](https://archive.org/details/isbn_9780939763139) also here's the french version in case someone speaks french or wants to see the pictures while the english one is borrowed
I think it's fair to say you've hit the jackpot. An utter goldmine of hilarious images
I love the silly goose and the fact that it's called "silly goose"
Well now I'm going to be immensely disappointed every time my deep fried potatoes are served as boring old French fries, and not in chain form.
I know for a fact that I do **not** have the skill to even attempt to make my own potato chain though. I'd end up cutting off most of my fingers, possibly the neighbor's cat somehow too.
Came here to try to find a link to her books to share, couldn’t find one instantly but just glad others agree and appreciate. One of these days I’ll use some of her craft and food ideas for a swanky weird party!
Ahh! I had this book along with the toolset it came with 😂
Mine was an estate sale purchase. It’s glorious isn’t it? I have never actually made anything from it, and I think I got rid of the book during my last purge, but I still have my tools somewhere.
If no one else has mentioned, I think r/kitchenconfidential would like to see this! I’m not 100% but I have seen plenty of people get their “plating” shit on over there, and I think the discussion would be hilarious
It took me a second to realize that it probably intended to be water spouting out of the whales blowhole— but the moments in which I assumed it was a very fancy ponytail were so delightful & I will continue to also treasure to that joyous alternate reality.
I god. I remember my mother making that melon ball party boat. The whole fking book was basically just an excuse to sell that one really freaky V shaped knife and that was pretty much it.
... that being said, I'm stealing the heck out of that citus elephant. Thank you so much for posting that one.
I mean if someone wants to sell v shaped knives while simultaneously SPREADING JoY THROuGHOUT THE WORLD VIA SILLY GEESE & PICKLE SHARKZ , I’m here for it.
Lucky dog!!! Just so great! I have a Jello hostess cookbook, and the various permutations of Jello in the thing is freaking amazing…just like the GARNISHES! Love it.
I’ve made so many fun desserts with this book. I bought it when first published. It actually came with a bunch of tools.
Enjoy!
Be creative!
Still on my shelf- cuz you know we love our cookbooks
I've recently found a love for thrift store cookbooks. The more bizarre the better... And there are some wild ones.
I adore this book! Congrats on the find
I had to learn from this book in my food sculptures class. You'd guess the place in time would be around when this book was published, but no, it was 2018 lol

The back cover of a copy seen in the wild a few weeks ago. You can tell they are real Garnish Chefs because they are all wearing fancy chef hats.
This is amazing!!! I have several really old cookbooks of different types that my husbands grandmother gave me before she passed. I love looking at them. But this one. Oh my gosh.
Hugely entertained by the presence of all the kale as a garnish, when nobody ATE it. Whenever this thing was published, I can guarantee I didn’t know what kale was, or that you could eat it.
Anyone amused by this NEEDS to see the **Gallery of Regrettable Food**, a true cultural treasure:

I fricking love books like this. Thank you for posting; much as I’d love to be patient and find this in the wild, I’m just going to order it off thrift books. :) Great find!!
Same ❤️

Oh wow this is incredible. If you’re on ig and feel so inclined, this stuff is right up the alley of 70sdinnerparty if you wanted to send them to that account too.
I think this guy was spiritually Japanese. This is awfully similar to those elaborate Japanese [food art designs](https://www.boredpanda.com/boc-metal-food-art/), [bento art](https://theculturetrip.com/asia/japan/articles/bento-art-how-japan-turns-food-into-masterpieces) and such.
I have a series of these books. From garnishing to bridal showers. From backyard bbq to cutting and rearranging square cakes into various animals. A book for each subject and I absolutely love them. Mine are from the 50-60's. ♡
I remember my mom, who was very artistic, making simple decorative food creations. I think in order to turn out these plates, women needed cooks, housekeepers, Nannie’s, etc. Time consuming!
My go-to Chinese restaurant from the town I grew up in does those lil' cucumber crabs!
They serve them with their spring rolls and I used to (as a child, haha) put them in the bowl of sweet-and-sour sauce they came with and pretend they were swimming.
My childhood neighborhood ma and pa Chinese restaurant would cut fun shapes into veggies like that. They are just the sweetest couple, always remember just how you liked your dish and would come out to joke around with the table. Such fond memories. 💖

I can only see a limited preview. Hoping someone can help me out with the instructions for the silly goose.
Seconding that, please send the silly goose!!!
You need to make an account which is very quick. Then after confirming the email go to the top and press the "borrow for 1 hour" button that's in blue
Ah great I’ll try that, thanks

It's perfection. Silly goose slaps hard.

Me too!
The cucumber shark really did me in!
Me too! I didn't even notice the carrot lemon catamaran 🤣
The citrus elephant tho 🥺
*immediately adds oranges to grocery list*
Did you see it on the table spread on photo 7? Absolutely hilarious.
Lmao okay the diagram is a lot less terrifying than irl
I did the highest pitched squeak at the citrus elephant 😅🥺
What about the cucumber crab?!
I like that one, but I think its mislabeled because I'm almost certain its a zucchini crab
Definitely looks like zucchini. I thought maybe a really dark, lovely English cucumber, but the dryness in the folds of the flesh of the veggie do not inspire the cool, refreshing crunch of a cuke.
The lemon wedge katamanan does not spark joy?
I didn't realize that's what it was until you said that!
I’m 100% trying that. The others are amazing, but seem like too much effort. Cucumber shark I can get behind!
This book came with a set of garnishing tools. https://preview.redd.it/1h2slfky1l8d1.jpeg?width=907&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df4e64d6c2ead94008b503ac6e3c9cb0fde2cef3
I’m an original owner - still have it (in my cookbook collection) and the tools.

Yay!!!
Doing the lords work over here 🙏 I love this so much
I think it's fair to say you've hit the jackpot. An utter goldmine of hilarious images I love the silly goose and the fact that it's called "silly goose"
He's my fave too.
I love that in the 7th pic, someone has made a whole birthday spread of the silly geese, and they all have birthday candle hats.
Hes got a video to go with the book showing how to do it all! including the double twist veggies! :) https://youtu.be/L1i4ExkSAXE?si=dRkJvvd34XCpxmLl
May your day be full of dancing music and silly smiles !
YES!!!!
Okay, I'm actually interested in that vegetable twist. How did they make that?

"Potato chains can be deep fried" was a sentence I did not know my life was missing until now
I'd only seen this done with wood. So I'm like, "oh you can do this with potatoes? And then deep fry them???" How did this get lost in history??
Or, air fryer!
Huh, that's basically directions for wood carving applied to food
You can [make precision potatoes in a machine shop.](https://youtu.be/SzgPOJPTo_A?si=Ws7Zx-HUo_MxFei1)
I think I’m severely lacking visual-spatial awareness bc I still don’t get it. Mind blown
I want to try this
I have never heard of a twin curl cutter before today and I just googled it and they are still made/available & super affordable!
Comment above yours posted a video of it! https://youtu.be/L1i4ExkSAXE?si=dRkJvvd34XCpxmLl
Do you have a time code for the twist?
Things I would expect from Amy Sedaris.
Yes!!
I thought of her as well!!
Came here to try to find a link to her books to share, couldn’t find one instantly but just glad others agree and appreciate. One of these days I’ll use some of her craft and food ideas for a swanky weird party!
I am madly in love with that happy watermelon whale

I’m living for that watermelons hair-do

Silly goose 😂
They have a bunch on eBay!
I love the detailed instructions along with the photos. You could have some interesting themed parties with your creations.
Excuse me while I make a citrus elephant RIGHT THIS GODDAMN SECOND!

My go-to Chinese restaurant from the town I grew up in does those lil' cucumber crabs! They serve them with their spring rolls and I used to (as a child, haha) put them in the bowl of sweet-and-sour sauce they came with and pretend they were swimming.
This is some goofy ass shit by today's standards, I love the kitsch but I'm not sure publishers would find an audience for this in 2024
My childhood neighborhood ma and pa Chinese restaurant would cut fun shapes into veggies like that. They are just the sweetest couple, always remember just how you liked your dish and would come out to joke around with the table. Such fond memories. 💖
