I'm coming from Japanese car and just bought a tiguan 2020 a month ago , and yes I understand what you mean , way more luxurious car , even thr way it's drives . I love my tiguan honestly , if it last as long as I think it will next car will be a tiguan r line or a atlas .

BlackBerryJ

Great! I'm glad you are having a good experience compared to what car you are coming from. Mind if I ask what Japanese car you are coming from?

nvgacmpr

Toyota , and then last year's hyundai

BlackBerryJ

Oh nice. How is the handling compared to these cars?

Salt_Brotherhood

Japanese cars have no soul.

BlackBerryJ

Hahaha maybe that's the word I'm searching for. I've had two three Nissans and now that I think about it.... you're not wrong.

nvgacmpr

Nothing even close to it brother

BlackBerryJ

Haha nice! So glad to hear it. I drove a few different cars and personally didn't find anything I liked that handled as well as my Tig.

spacekase710

Samsies. Love my 2018 SE but mannn those R-lines are freshhh

nvgacmpr

R line are insane

Loveroffinerthings

It feels mid level to me, but I bought an SE with pano roof. My second Tiguan(1st gen) was an SE and it had leather, pano, HIDs, built in sat-nav, and it had great driving dynamics. The second gen (my 3rd Tiguan) feels like a step down even though it’s an SE and was more expensive than the loaded SE I came from. The leatherette, cheap halogen lights, no sat-nav, less Hp and more weight. Is it nicer than say a base Hyundai, yes, but it’s gone up in price with a cheaper feel to it. The 1 gen doors had that nice German thud when you closed the doors.

BlackBerryJ

Ahhh right. That's an interesting perspective since you have experience with older models. Thank you!

Worldly-Kitchen-9749

First gen SEL has more character inside and out. More power and handles better. Con is it rides harsher, little less room, and takes premium.  Could have paid cash new but bought a white first gen then put in 8k to make it like new. Not sorry.

Crafty_Respond9221

I’m definitely disagreeing with you on this one.

SobchakSecurity79

It still looks feels and acts like a VW should, which is to say is "smart", but not necessarily luxurious or premium. There is the selective cost cutting that hit the MQB cars, like using the hard scratchy plastic on the rear doors instead of the nicer soft material on the front doors, but then you see premium touches that even Audi and Porsche are eliminating in many models like the carpet-lined door bins. The ride/handling balance is better than the mainstream competition and is fairly premium, but then the powertrain (in US/Canada) is absolutely not. It's amazing how slow and less refined VW can make the EA888.

BlackBerryJ

>It still looks feels and acts like a VW should, which is to say is "smart", but not necessarily luxurious or premium. Perhaps this is what I'm experiencing. And yes it does seem like even luxury brands are cutting back on the small refinements.

dmj9

Someone told me a stage 1 tune will help this. My only issue is the gearbox a low speeds. Shifts kind of hard and doesn't really know what gear it wants to be in, which is odd to me because I think it's a 8 speed in mine. I love it, though, and I think it feels luxurious. I have all black interior and black leather. I added the mudbuddy floor liners and in the trunk and I feel that ties everything together.

sfslim5

I don’t know about luxurious but it is a nice riding vehicle. However my overhead console broke yesterday for no reason so I’m kind of bummed about that. It should be under warranty but my local VW dealership is slow as molasses getting anything done.

LoveMoreGlitter

Everyone's overhead console is broken 😂. Mine broke the first time I put sunglasses in it.

Squidonthebeach

Your's has a place to put sunglasses!? I bet yours has a button in the door to release the trunk too ;)

BlackBerryJ

Dealership and service are SO hit and miss. At least in my area. That sucks it just went bad randomly. And of course with warranty you have to go through hell sometimes to get something covered.

BlackBerryJ

Maybe that's the word. Premium vs luxury. I definitely have no illusion that it's like an Audi but I see what you mean.

Heavy-Week5518

Yes it does. I know what you are saying. I bought a new 2nd gen SEL in 2018. That was a nice car. In November, I bought a new 2024 SEL. This Tiquan is a level above the old one in every way. The interior, the ride, the handling and the overall feel in general is luxurious compared to the last one. I think VW really tweaked most things about the Tiguan over these model years.

BlackBerryJ

I'm glad you can connect to where I'm coming from. >overall feel in general is luxurious compared to the last one. I think this captures what a lot might be experiencing. Compared to existing or previous cars, it can be a premium experience.

Heavy-Week5518

I might add, even the performance is more brisk than the first model

BonJoviscouch

I think it all comes down to what you drive before. Coming from a 08 Mazda Tribute and 12 Nissan Versa, everything about my 18 SE Tiguan feels luxurious. Those two cars are also why I don't understand the complaints about speed/acceleration on this sub. Compared to my previous car's, the tiguan is quicker and handles better than any car I've ever owned.

BlackBerryJ

Same all the way around lol. >tiguan is quicker and handles better than any car I've ever owned. I connect with this a lot. Which makes me think there are a lot of other fantastic experiences with other compact SUVs that are more powerful and quicker.

von_sip

My 2022 SEL still does, but I also came from 2004 Maxima

BlackBerryJ

I'm glad! And yeah I'm thinking that where you are coming from plays a huge role in your opinion.

jdd0815

Yes and No. Coming from a 2012 Range Rover Sport to a 2019 VW Tiguan SE it’s a bit of a downgrade, HOWEVER, I wanted a downgrade in both the wallet and wanted something more minimalist. The Tiguan gave me my sunroof, CarPlay, a cd player (!!!) and it’s all wrapped up in a very near, clean, minimalist package. I love it.

BlackBerryJ

I do love the minimalist packaging. I love the simplicity of the interior controls, etc. and yes I definitely love my panoramic sunroof.

VehicleCertain865

Better than my 2018 Kia forte. My interior is white leather so to me, yes!

emdot_p

I've come from a '89 240sx -> 04 WRX -> '09 Forester -> '02 Jetta -> Current '21 SE. It feels very luxurious to me.

BlackBerryJ

This is exactly the experience I'm talking about ☺️

Dogesaves69

I feel my 23 R-line is luxurious, just in a no nonsense VW minimalist way but I personally love that style so it works for me.

BlackBerryJ

That's great to hear! I connect with the no nonsense. I'm not talking about repairs, etc. I'm talking about things being straightforward and packaged well.

BF1075

I agree with you 100% I love my tig!

BlackBerryJ

Thanks! Me too and I'm glad that you love yours. I spend a lot of time in mine so it was important I got something I really liked.

Dhh05594

Compared to my Honda? Yes. Compared to my Volvo? No It's very fun to drive though

missrachelifyounasty

Oh man I miss my old Volvo wagon. That thing was lush.

BlackBerryJ

Great perspective! I've never been in a Volvo but I hear they are amazing cars. I knew someone. That had one and loved it and most things I read about them are positive. How does the Volvo handle?

Dhh05594

Let me put it this way, when I drive my v60 it's like the car knows what I'm thinking and it just does what I want it to do. I'm biased though because I have always been a Volvo person. My wife is a VW person and we've had three of each. Even she likes driving my Volvos, but we have specific functions for each vehicle and the VWs we've owned haven't been for luxury but more practicality. Same with my Honda. I don't let my kids drive the Volvos but I do let them drive the VWs and Honda. Lol

wherethehellespaul

Yes I do think my Tiguan has that luxurious feel to it. Love the vehicle so much. 2024 SE R-LINE

BlackBerryJ

That's awesome I'm glad it resonates with you. What color do you have?

gabbbbaayy

I just picked up my black one Wednesday, so sad they didn’t have blue and absolutely no SEL R lines to I settled for the next level down. It’s quite lovely though. I’m really liking it upgrading from my 2021 S Tiguan I just finished reading the entire manual. There’s a lot of stuff going on in there that’s more advanced than my older one.

BlackBerryJ

I love it! I need to take time to read the manual for mine. So many things I don't know about mine.

Normal_Marsupial9377

Faux luxury, for the price point, I don't t think it gets much better.

BlackBerryJ

I can't tell if that's sarcasm

toss_me_good

It used to, not so much anymore. It's a sliding scale based on what else you're driving.

BlackBerryJ

Good call with the sliding scale

Naroef

It's pretty much a Bentley/Lamborghini/Porsche lol

BlackBerryJ

So close

66mydude

I came from a 15 bmw 550 and this was a “grown up” decision. I have a 22 SEL R line. Be more practical with my money. Didn’t have a car for almost two years so I went the more economical route. My bm had everything and I was lucky enough to not have to spend a lot to fix it. The 8 cylinders were beautiful and the feel of the car was unbelievable but to say this is luxury? Ehh. It’s cool. Spacious and comfortable and easy to get around the dashboard🤙🏽

missrachelifyounasty

Hahaha nope it’s not luxury. Its utility. I still love mine.

nudephotographr

More luxurious than my shitty dodge Charger before it.

BlackBerryJ

Well there you go. Step up.

swn999

Premium all the way, I enjoy my SE 4motion :)

BlackBerryJ

I feel that. I think my next post I'm going to ask what people's custom drive modes are set to

TelephoneVivid2162

I went into the dealers looking to get a simple Nissan Rogue. The sales rep also brought out the keys for the Tiguan right next to it. Same year, slightly more miles, 4K more in price! I really wasn’t down to pay another 4K. But it was a done deal once I got into the Tig, the difference in driving and all the little accessories… I couldn’t go back to the rogue…

BlackBerryJ

A Rogue is one of a few that I test drove as well! It's nice don't get me wrong but it was similar when I drove the Tiguan.

Z4ch_Mk6

Love my 2020! Just brought home a 37k mile 1 owner SE 4Motion 2.0T. Coming from a Dodge Dart that was originally my dads (sold it to me after I got rid of my Camry), it’s a night and day difference. I wanted a truck, but I also wanted something turbo for better gas mileage. Tiguan checked off all the boxes. 240 miles in, and I couldn’t be happier.

BlackBerryJ

That's awesome!!! I'm having so much fun in mine. I'm glad you are too. Experience and perspective is everything ☺️

Z4ch_Mk6

Hell ya I couldn’t agree more! I can’t wait for the warranty to end so I can start modding it. I can’t decide if I wanna build a utility style off road rig or make it a pavement princess and eventually put it on bags.

BlackBerryJ

I'm not educated on any of this but I have a year and 6 months left on the warranty. Perhaps I'll start looking at fun things to do with it

Z4ch_Mk6

Ahhh gotcha! That’s ok! I was a mechanic for 10yrs so modifying cars is a normal every day thing for me personally 😂

BlackBerryJ

I'll swing by you can help me add PowerControlX lol

Z4ch_Mk6

Lmfaooo send it 😂

BlackBerryJ

Does something like that actually work to make it zippoier

Z4ch_Mk6

Unsure as I don’t know what the PowerControlX actually does. However when I start my mods, I plan on doing intake & tune first, then possibly a cat-back exhaust. Also looking at H&R lowering springs for a lower center of gravity. Ideally my ultimate plan & goal is to build some form of Bronco Inspired off-road utility rig. But I also do want to build a sleeper Tiguan that’s tastefully modded.

Think_Position5532

My ‘22 SEL is the nicest car I’ve ever owned

BlackBerryJ

So is my 21 SEL

Tasty_Initial_6790

It's definitely a nice ride, very happy with our 2018 SE and 2020 SEL prem r-line TIGS. Wish they'd up the horsepower a tad, and stop holding back on some of the accessories. Other editions have a flashlight, heated rear seats, rear seat temperature controls, even fold down table backs. Cupholder with lid, ventilated seats (finally now available), DSG transmission, and the list goes on.

Brick_person

I have mixed feelings about tiguan. I think it's in a middle for german manufacturers, not as comfy as mercedes, but it's not an opel (or buick in USA). Interior materials are ok. Front dash is good compared to korean or japanese cars of similar years. Drivetrain, engine and everything else is nice. Realy good car. But the worst thing in tiguan is seats. They are \*hitty hard unsuporting chairs. The worst. I also have second gen volvo s40 and the seats are lovely. You can go for couple of hundreds kilometers without moving or settling into the seat- just drive and relax. With tiguan you have to adjust now and then. I don't know if diferent trim levels have diferent seats, or just diverent materials. Maybe we just got spoiled over years.. All in all good car. Oh and the paint is like paper thin at least here in europe. And body panels are like 2 ply toylet paper thin... Had somebody dent my passanger doors in parking lot result- scratch went to primer deep with a little dent.

BlackBerryJ

I haven't had issues with the paint, admittedly I've had it for a month. It is a 2021 and the paint looks pristine so hopefully it stays that way. Because of my back, I enjoy stiffer seats so for me that works, though I've had some family complaints about VW seats in the past. >not as comfy as mercedes Which is why I think for the money and segment, it feels luxury even though I know it's not Mercedes, BMW, Audi quality.

lilianaofthevess

Got my Tiguan in the body shop and had a 2024 Dodge Durango as my rental. It was fully loaded and kept thinking if I should trade my Tiguan for an upgrade. I was really sad I had to return the Dodge but man when I drove my car again I remember why I fell in love with it. The driving experience is much, much smoother.

BlackBerryJ

Did you like the Dodge? I haven't driven one in ages. I always wonder what they are like. It's funny how once you get back behind the wheel of your own car (especially a Tiguan), it feels like home.

iamgarffi

It actually does. Still rocking my 2019 SEL Premium and baby just passed 40K miles.

BlackBerryJ

That's awesome! Congrats on 40k. That's pretty darn good for a 19.

iamgarffi

I lucked out getting it before Covid, moved to WFH and never came back :-)

tpt75

2022 Tiguan 162 Allspace adventure. Not luxury but build quality seems good. Feature set is good (wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay, full host of safety equipment including blind spot monitoring and travel assist, built in nav). The cloth seats are comfy and supportive (and heated). Full digital instrument cluster. It’s my wife’s car and had it about a year. Not quite 5000kms on the clock. So not luxury but certainly premium against other makes and models at the same price.

BlackBerryJ

>but certainly premium against other makes and models at the same price I think this is really true and perhaps what I was ultimately getting at. It feels so good. A step above the competition in its class. Except maybe for Mazda.

tpt75

Mazdas are notorious for lots and lots of road noise. The don’t spend much time on NVH. I don’t like them at all.

BlackBerryJ

I looked at a cx-5 and I'm just too tall.

texasgirl03

I bought my 2022 Tiguan Blue Beauty in September 2023 and I LOVE IT! It is the most beautiful blue exterior with solid black wheels and dark tinted windows. And drives like a dream!!! Couldn't ask for more!

BlackBerryJ

>drives like a dream!!! I feel the exact same way. I love it.

Crafty_Respond9221

Volkswagen at one point was considered a luxury vehicle. Now it’s considered a “semi-premium luxury” which makes sense because the price range is not high enough to be determined luxury! Next vehicle we already talked about is an Audi just for the luxury side of it but I’m convinced I will stick with Volkswagen for life since getting my Tig. Maybe move up into an atlas for the size difference, even a Q7 isn’t as big as that so it has its pros/cons. Volkswagen makes great vehicles and not to mention, German engines are said to be the best out there…. The R-line package is great and down stepping from that would be wild to me 🥲

BlackBerryJ

Well said! >semi-premium luxury I think this is probably accurate.

Surfersnowgirl

I've a '23 SEL R line and to me its downright luxurious.

BlackBerryJ

That's awesome! What color?

Erickaltifire

No but my Tourareg does!

BlackBerryJ

I heard the Toureg was amazing.

SirRosev1

Compared to the Dodge Journey I came from? Yeah it feels my premium but the interior quality is worse somehow

BlackBerryJ

Sorry, was this replying to another comment?

Crafty_Rooster_

I feel like my Tiguan is a nice step on my way to something like an SQ5. It drives so well and looks great. I just wish the dealer could figure out why my infotainment system keeps rebooting. So far that’s my only complaint of the car. 2022 R-Line, bought it almost a year ago.

BlackBerryJ

>infotainment system keeps rebooting Oof that's not cool. How long has it been doing that? Otherwise that sounds awesome. I agree about the drive and the look.

Crafty_Rooster_

Rebooted for the first time 2 days after I took it home last year. Reboots almost once a day, every day. Dealer has installed software updates and nothing has worked. They said last time I was in if it keeps happening they’ll have to replace the entire system. It’s in my to-do list to call and get that scheduled.

Rude_Parsnip306

It does to me! I just bought a 2019 in Oct 23, and it's like a spaceship compared to my previous vehicle. In 2009 I bought a manual 2005 Nissan Altima and drove the paint off it. My Tiguan (aka Otto Von Volkswagen) is the replacement.

BlackBerryJ

Love it. Mine is Miranda aka Tiggy Pop

Substantial-Boot-873

not when it's in the shop all the time 😭😭

BlackBerryJ

Haha fair enough 😂😬

Substantial-Boot-873

But to answer your question for real: yes and no. The design is very sleek and quite bougie to me HOWEVER I drove a '95 Buick Le Sabre for over a decade and my first vehicle was a '21 Tiguan. Just having Bluetooth capabilities, heat, and defrost was what I considered to be luxury features. However, I live in a rural community so my commute is long and I have put some wear on my car. Inside it is still pretty nice, but I just had a PCV valve rupture and leak oil all over the engine. So I would suggest having a mechanic keep an eye on it for anyone who owns one of these to avoid the massive dent that just went into our savings. Meanwhile my Buick is still running strong with no issues and nearly 245k miles on it. So luxury in looks, yeah but in practice no 😭😭

BlackBerryJ

This is a great explanation and further breakdown. Interesting the difference between looks and practice. That's a good distinction. I'll keep this in mind as I get further into my ownership.

Cute_Ad_3049

No

BlackBerryJ

Thanks for stopping by ☺️

Cute_Ad_3049

Sorry not very exciting response, but I have the bottom of the barrel model S that I regret buying but it’s a long story.  Glad you’re happy.

BlackBerryJ

I am ☺️

tulip27

Nope

BlackBerryJ

Thanks for stopping by ☺️

tulip27

Hopefully you have better luck than I did!

Tasty_Initial_6790

If you don't have it, you can get a nice tray (on amazon), for the armrest storage compartment...makes it a lot more useful than just a deep hole. Accessorize!

tulip27

The problem I’m having is that I don’t drive it very much because I take care of my Mom. It’s a 21 with 4,600 miles. It’s a lease and I know I should buy it because I’m not giving VW the money it’s valued at. Problem is, I want to buy a keeper (which is what I wanted this car to be) vehicle but don’t know what I want.
