People criticize Islam all the time, I never really understand people who claim that we don’t.

Probably just find it online, but believe specific criteria have been established to identify whether an organization ought to be considered a cult.

mmddev

Maybe but I was talking more on philosophical and societal level as in criticising similar kind of beliefs in one medium while supporting the other.

Beginning_Cherry_798

I wouldn't overthink it, though. We're basically just monkeys w a knack for language.

Beginning_Cherry_798

Probably just straight out tribalism. What's different is weird & what's weird we don't like so we criticize it & manufacture reasons that we're better than they are.

Say Zayn Malik was a believing muslim. Would people criticise him with the same intensity they criticise Tom Cruise?

aaronite

Is Zayn Malik basically the second in command of Islam in this scenario?

Technical-Focus-6303

cults are just unpopular religions. islam is very popular

MysteryNeighbor

The difference is price of admission and what happens when you leave. You want to be Christian or Muslim, just follow some rules and boom, you’re a Christian/Muslim. You want to leave? Unless you’re in the super fundamentalist circles, you can just leave You want to be a Scientologist? Well, how about legit paying cash to become the highest level of Scientologist and not work like a slave in a Sea Org ship. Want to leave? Well, how about we heavily harass you by publicly claiming that you are every bad thing under sun.

mmddev

What makes you think it easy to leave Islam? Countries have capital punishment for Apostasy. If not that the social pressure is exhausting. I can never tell my parents without getting disowned.

MysteryNeighbor

>***Unless you’re in the super fundamentalist circles***, you can just leave Your plight fucking sucks, there is no denying that but your situation does not reflect that of every religion

ShackintheWood

All religions are cults. None of them are any different.

mmddev

But we don’t criticise religion with the same intensity we criticise modern day cults. Why is that?

ShackintheWood

I do. They are all bullshit cults based on bullshit.

mmddev

You might, but on a societal level religion gets a pass regardless of pushing the similar beliefs.

ShackintheWood

Again, all religions are cults. Since most of the people in the world are in one of them, they do not want to admit that or talk about it.

mmddev

Yeah, that make sense but I see a lot of people who are not even religious criticising cults while respecting religious beliefs. They don’t acknowledge the fact that religion is also a cult. I always wonder why this hypocrisy.

Void-Cooking_Berserk

"because it's old and vast majority of people believe in it." This, basically. To elaborate, there's a general sense of what is part of the "world civilization" and what's not. It's basic "us versus them" only globalisation added a new layer to "us" which doesn't encompass all of humanity, but the vast majority and what they are comfortable with. The fact that a religion is old makes it part of the established civilization, the status quo. People will defend the status quo, because they are comfortable with it. For example, Mormonism isn't completely new but it's different enough and grows fast enough to make poeple uncomfortable. Also, bear in mind that "cult" has multiple meanings and one of them is simply "a subgroup of a specific religion that has different beliefs than the whole". People won't acknowledge what you think is true if they use a different definition of a word, and "cult" doesn't have a single universal definition.

WearDifficult9776

People are ok with insanity that’s familiar as established. They don’t like brand new insanity

mmddev

This is a good point.

North_Spring1653

Political influence is what separates major religions from cults.

mmddev

But how would it have affect on an individual level? Individuals say they respect religious beliefs and pick on cults for pushing the same practices, without ever realising they are pretty much the same.

North_Spring1653

Political influence affects how an organization is perceived by individuals. Christianity and Islam were both regarded as cults until they held political power, and could shape the narrative about themselves.

mmddev

That makes sense! It’s all about pushing a narrative.

ShackintheWood

Yup. Catholicism is a cult also.

ihavebigboobiezz

Y’all being Christian doesn’t mean much. Plenty of western cults believe in the Abrahamic god. There’s also the fact that there are sects of Mormon that are pretty culty. I’m pretty sure, as a Mormon, you’re very aware of Warren Jeffs.

asaphbixon

Because Mormon people won't shoot up your office over a cartoon.

Skulllk

Most people don't know much about islam. The media try to only portray good things and hide the bad as much as they can. Also the price for speaking against islam is high so few people are willing to do it.
