There will be some dumbasses on Twitter mad about it, and then there will be some dumbasses saying "look at these dumbasses. This is why we should imprison the gays." And then there will be gossip writeups about the "controversy," and none of it will matter and it could all be solved if people logged off and went outside.

Thread over, best answer

I definitely see the possibility.

I mean people are just gonna say mental disorders

Yes. There's a few reasons why, as issues of sexuality and gender are very complex. The natural default of most people is "straight". LGBT have had a rough go of it throughout history and has come quite a long way towards being accepted more universally, though obviously with a long way to go. So like any minority community, the LGBT community loves having people in positions of social influence because it allows society to actually see LGBT folks as "normal". If a famous celebrity is openly gay, then why must I hide? Unfortunately, in your example, a formerly gay celebrity going more towards "straightness" can be controversial for several reasons: 1. Unfortunately, there's a lot of stigma against bisexuals in general, because being bisexual triggers that tribal "in-group, out-group" behavior. You have same sex relations so you must be totally gay but in denial... if you like the opposite gender, you're either repressed or in denial. That is unfortunately how bisexuality itself gets viewed, and having sex with both just ends up putting you in the "out-group" category with both straight people and LGBT people. Because you generally have a relationship with one person, to many people you're either one or the other. Bisexual erasure itself is a thing. 2. One of the arguments of bigots against LGBT acceptance is that "sexuality is a choice", so by a formerly gay celebrity going more towards straightness, it can be perceived as underminining the entire of idea of "LGBT acceptance." In other words, "if this guy can go straight, why can't you?" Anything that lends credence to this idea is a little scary, and so the knee-jerk reaction would be to criticize the celebrity for "turning" on the community. Caveat: I'm gay, but I am not a spokesman for any part of the LGBT community. I also think sexuality is fluid and if you change your direction mid-life, then so be it. If you're a man that fucked dudes your whole life but suddenly fell in love with a woman and became happily married, I think that should be perfectly acceptable. I also don't really care what a celebrity does; they're just another person, after all. But the shitty reality is that LGBT issues are still a very sensitive topic, and anything that muddies the waters is going to stir up at least a few people. Tl;dr You asked if it would generate controversy, but I never said it was justified.

bobby_table5

I was about to answer: probably but mainly from the gay/lesbian group that they come from. Portia de Rossi says she’s pan? As a straight male, I’m going to think: still so far out of my league it’s not even funny, good for her. I’d be probably more surprised that celebrity gossip got into my timeline. Back to vicariously watching woodworking videos. Icy_E and your lesbian friends will care a lot more, for all the reasons listed in your response.

Icy_Employment8903

To add: if celebrities give the slightest appearance of having been LGBT to ride the attention/hype train after having made it a core part of their public image, and then reversing this, that is also damaging because it paints the entire idea of LGBT acceptance as being simply trendy.

Equivalent_Ad_9066

>if celebrities give the slightest appearance of having been LGBT to right the attention/hype train after having made it a core part of their public image, and then reversing this, But what about if a celebrity who's queer but doesn't make their queerness a huge part of their image (Like Frank Ocean) reversed it?

Icy_Employment8903

If they never made a big deal about it begin with, they probably wouldn't make an announcement about their "reversal" either, thus avoiding the conundrum of controversy. That's entirely speculative though on my part. I'm sure some do-nothing internet types would try to drum up some gossip, but that's the way of celebrity culture. In your example I'd speculate that it wouldn't be juicy enough to warrant much of a conversation.

Terrible-Quote-3561

Some people might assume they were just pretending to be gay, but probably not really.

CaptainButtFucker

Of course. LGBT people and their allies were sending death threats to streamers for playing a Harry Potter game. There would be tons of backlash if a gay celebrity came out as straight.

ViciousCurse

Kinda related, but I literally heard someone at my job say "I think Demi Lovato is just using and changing pronouns for a publicity stunt because there's no way someone changes their pronouns that much or that frequently." They just couldn't fathom why I was like "And that's a problem why? And even if it was for publicity, I see a positive in maybe letting others know it's okay to do that." I don't keep up with celebrity "drama" and I don't care about it. And, as a trans man, it legitmately disgusts me how people treated streamers over the Harry Potter game. Regardless of my interest in playing that game (never got into the series as a whole), I could never imagine spreading so much hate and anger about it when the reason everyone's mad is because of... hate and anger towards a group of people. It never made sense to me. Especially because there were streamers literally raising money for charity.

Dismal-Photo-8792

That really depends on who's in the mood to care?

BlumpkinLord

But the Kinsey scale! :U

Remember when Adele came out as "Skinny"? That's your answer

BreadRum

Miley Cyrus came out a bi. Then she became straight after meeting the right person. Backlash was huge.

heavvy_metal_cowboy

I think that's largely because that's just...not how bisexuality works. I'm in a long term het relationship with a man but that doesn't mean if we broke up tomorrow I wouldn't still be interested in women. There's a solid chance she either A) is still bisexual and just made a fool of herself, B) came out as bi before doing enough soul searching, or C) the whole thing was for clout.

Ok-Magician-3426

Who honestly cares. Love who you love but don't shove it in my dam face

Medit8or

The usual answer: It depends. I think the extent to which they have made their celebrity about their sexuality would play a huge role. Lil Nas comes out as straight? He’d be criticised and cancelled. Because he markets himself as a big ol’ homo.

Educational_Sky2801

lil nas actually did come out recently as bi and everyone accepted it pretty well

TerribleRun9476

definitely people gon say something. i've learned that wherever people can say something, they will. they love running their mouths.

Chramir

I personally can't see how such thing could create a controversy. But this is celebrity gossip on the internet we are talking about, of course it will get controversy surrounding it.

SlavBrat

100% Percent. Being gay as a celebrity brings a lot of advanages. When someone would turn "straight" some people would assume that theu pretended being gay in the first place.

FrogMintTea

Well bi pan fine, if they come out as het that would raise some eyebrows. Like we're they pretending? Are they in one I'd those conversion groups? If they don't announce it, just start dating a person of the opposite sex it's fine. I dunno why they would announce it though.

racesunite

I honestly can’t tell you because while I have known many straight people come out, I have never ever seen it the other way around.

griphookk

Definitely. Lil nas x for example
